A founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Tanko Yakasai, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not done anything against the north to warrant the region moving against his re-election in 2027.
The statesman said President Tinubu still remains the candidate to beat among those jostling for the nation’s highest office in the next presidential election.
He spoke to journalists on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital, saying he’s not aware of a serious opposition against the president’s return to office.
Yakassai spoke amidst suggestions that the North is already done with President Tinubu, and is ready to vote him out in 2027. Some key political and religious leaders from the region have openly spoke against the president, saying he has not done well for the north, citing the security and economic problems facing the region since he came to power.
According to Yakassai, Tinubu’s chances of re-election is brighter than other candidates, which he said, posed no serious threat to the incumbent, adding that the north has yet to take a united position on whether to support Tinubu or not, adding that a handful of people from the region speaking on the issue have only been expressing their personal opinions.
He explained that Tinubu currently has everything working for him, in his quest to return to office, because, according to him other potential aspirants have not shown such seriousness, adding that Tinubu has the ‘stamina and strength” to win the election.
Apart from having a solid support form his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Yakassai said Tinubu has the support of opposition “governors” and leaders to contest the election, adding that the problems facing the opposition in the country is that they have not been able to put their house in order.
“I haven’t heard anybody making any proposition about the 2027 presidential election from Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF),” Yakasai said.
“What is tagged the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) or Northern Elders Forum’s position is mere individual opinions, because all sections of the north have not taken a stand on this.
”In Nigeria today, Bola Tinubu is the president. He has his ministers and governors who are backing him.
“Who else has all what it takes to move into the contest with the kind of stamina and strength to be more successful comparatively with Tinubu.
“We should all wait and see if the picture will change drastically, otherwise for now, the odds are in his (Tinubu’s) favour because I have not seen anything that will prevent him from winning the next election.
“He hasn’t done anything against the North in my understanding and the North alone cannot decide who becomes the president of the country,” he said.
Last week, the north west APC leaders endorsed Tinubu for the next election, in what political pundits insist is a plus for him, even though he has yet to declare his intention to run.
Tinubu, the magazine recalls receives block votes from the region, to win the 2023 presidential election.
