The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has denied that Yahaya Belloo, a former governor of Kogi state, surrendered to the commission.
Dele Oyewale, the spokesman for the anti-graft agency said in a statement of Wednesday, few hours after the former governor issued a statement that he has surrendered.
The commission said in the statement that the former Kogi helmsman, wanted by the agency for alleged fraud of over N80 billion, is still at large.
Oyewale said, “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.
“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
The magazine reported that the former governor had remained a fugitive for months, allegedly hiding in the state Government House in Lokoja, the capital.
The last that was seen of him publicly was in February this year when he was allegedly spirited away by his successor, Usman Ododo after the EFCC surrounded his Abuja home.
The former governor, had refused to make himself available to the agency for prosecution even after the court ordered him to do so.
