Nigeria now has 21 registered political parties. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Thursday announced the registration of two new political parties.
The new parties are Democratic Leadership Alliance, (DLA) and National Democratic Congress, (NDC).
INEC chairman, Prof. Joaish Amupitan, announced this in Abuja on Thursday, at the first quarterly meeting with political party leaders.
Prof. Amupitan explained that while only the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all the conditions for the registration of political parties, the National Democratic Congress is being registered in obedience to the judgement of the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
He said certificates of registration will be handed over to the new political parties.
The meeting with the Electoral umpire was attended by members of the National Caretaker Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Abdulrahman Muhammed (Chairman), Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Secretary) and Hon. Umar Bature (National Organizing Secretary) – the PDP faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan Oyo state, had last week, nullified the PDP National Convention held on November 15, 2025, and directed Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and several others to cease parading themselves as national officers of the party.
