Speculations about Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s possible defection to the Peoples Democractic Party, PDP have finally berthed on the shores of reality. The Sokoto State governor this Wednesday announced his returned to his former party, PDP, ending months of suspense about his political future.
However, contrary to the believe that the former Speaker of the House of Reprentatives left the APC in order to vie for PDP’s Presidential ticket for the 2019 presidential election, The Source has exclusively gathered that plans by the APC to deny him second term governorship ticket was the overriding reason for his defection, though there is pressure on him by some PDP and APC governors to vie for the PDP presidential ticket.
Tambuwal and his immediate predecessor and now a serving Senator, Aliyu Wammako, this magazine gathered, are locked in cold war over the soul of Sokoto APC with the latter having the upper hand because of his closeness to an Aso Rock cabal that wields enormous influence in the party. Disillusioned by the turn of event, the governor has of late been critical of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Sokoto State governor became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011 against the wishes of the Dr.Goodluck Jonathan government and the national leadership of the PDP which had zoned the position to the South west and anointed Honourable Mulikat Akande for the job. However, with the active support of the then main opposition in the House, the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Tambuwal and his deputy, Emeka Ihedioha were to emerge victorious in the ensuing contest. On the day of the election, afraid that spurious charges may be hanged on them and security agents sent after them, Tambuwal, decked in full South south attire, and Ihedioha resplendent in a Northern attire, were smuggled into the House chamber, surrounded by their loyalists.
The Sokoto state governor is the third APC governor to have left the party for the PDP in the last one week. The other two are Governors Samuel Ortom of Benue and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara.
