The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday November 16, 2025, rejected the outcome of the Ibadan, November 15 National Convention of the Party.
The Source reports that the PDP had, at the Convention, among other things, elected Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as its new National Chairman. It also elected other National officers, and dissolved the party executive committees in five States including Abia, Imo and Enugu.
The party also voted to expel Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, and his.political soulmate Ayo Fayose, the former Ekiti State Governor National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, factional Board of Trustees Chairman, among others over alleged anti-party activities.
But in a statement from its spokesperson , Kenneth Yowika ,the Rivers State PDP described the Convention as a sham, noting that the event held against numerous court orders that had declared it illegal.
According to the party, two Federal High Courts, among others, had barred the national Organizing Committee and the National Working Committee, NWC from proceeding with the Convention.
This is as it expressed the optimism that the outcome will be invalidated by a competent court very soon.
“The ill-advised Convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already subjudiced at the Court of Appeal. We rest our faith solely on the Judiciary and urge all members to do the same”, the party stated .
It would be recalled that the State Chapter of the PDP had, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, announced its decision to boycott the November 15 and 16 Convention, citing alleged break down in communication between it and the national body/the organizing committee as a major reason.
In a letter jointly issued by the state executive committee members, several Local Government officials and major stakeholders, the chapter expressed serious regret and concern over the decision of the National Executive Committee NEC, and the Organizing Committee to shut out both the Rivers State Governor and the entire party leadership from the preparations for the Convention.
According to the party, the National body and the Organizing Committee failed and neglected to establish any formal channel of communication with both the leader of the party in the State – Governor Siminalayi Fubara – and the state executives concerning the conduct of the Convention.
“That there was no proper communication channel between the National leadership of the party and our leader, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers state which has consequently left us incommunicado.
“We were neither consulted nor was approval sought or obtained before our names and photographs appeared in the brochure of the proposed Ibadan National Convention of the party.
“In view of the above, we, therefore, unanimously resolved not to participate in the forthcoming National Convention scheduled to be held on the 15th and 16th of November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo state”, the party stated.
