Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has finally revealed why he decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
He spoke on Monday at an event in Asaba, the state capital to formally welcome him and other defectors into the ruling party.
The event was attended by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, APC Governors and other top echelon of the APC.
According to him, he defected from his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ‘has shown us love.’
He said the president’s support for his people must be reciprocated, and that’s why he joined Tinubu in the ruling party, adding that he and other defectors are resolved to work for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Recall that Governor Oborevwori defected to the APC last week amidst mixed reactions from not a few Nigerians, some of who said the country is fast becoming a one party state.
Apart from the governor, his deputy, and the immediate past Governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa, the Chirman of the PDP in the state also abandoned the PDP for the party at the centre.
Oborevwori: “Mr President has supported us, he has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. That love that he has shown us in Delta, we need to reciprocate it. We cannot do it in our old party. we have to be inside to do it and to do it well.
“This is a movement. This is not a defection. We have agreed we’ll move together, and when we move together, what is in national, we’re able to grab it.”
In the aftermath of Governor Oborevwori’s defection, suggestions in some quarters indicate that he and Okowa may have been forced to join the ruling party to provide soft landing for themselves.
Okowa, on whose crest the governor rode to officein 2023 has been accused of corruption to the tune of over N1.3 trillion.
