The authorities of the Bayero University Kano, BUK, have arrested two suspected fake lecturers.
The suspects were apprehended for, allegedly, compelling freshers of the Institution to buy text books introduced by them.
They were said to have threatened the new students with failure in their courses should they fail to buy the text books.
A statement from the University’s Special Bulletin Publicity Secretary, Bala Abdullahi, on Saturday, July 27 2024, gave the names of the two suspected fake lecturers as David Iluebe and Chike Eke from Edo and Delta States respectively.
They were said to have entered the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall ,and introduced themselves as lecturers.
They proceeded to also introduce about four text books to the 100 level students, covering the Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematics.
Thereafter, they were said to have threatened that failure to buy the books which they claimed will form part of the continuous assessment, will attract failure in the examination proper.
Not ready to fail any of the examinations, the students were said to have positively responded, leading to the purchase of several copies of the various text books.
But luck ran out on them when University security agents, based on intelligence, rounded them up on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
“The Two persons were, however, arrested on Thursday July 25, 2024 by security operatives for suspected criminal trespass, impersonation ,and cheating.
“During preliminary investigation ,the suspects claimed that they were the authors of the books they were selling to the students and they confessed to all the allegations leveled against them ,revealing that they were hustling to make a living due to lack of job.
“The suspects further disclosed that this was the second time they were coming to the state ,having been to the Kano state Polytechnic earlier this year.
“This is a very disturbing emerging trend in our tertiary institutions which are being invaded by crooks and charlatans masquerading as academics in order to dupe and exploit our unsuspecting students”, part of the statement reads.
While indicating that the suspects will be handed over to the appropriate authorities, the University authorities cautioned students and the public at large to be wary of the activities of criminal elements.
