The League of Northern Democrats, LND, has called on the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, constitute an independent panel to investigate the allegation of subversion being leveled against the Federal Government Nigeria by its neighbours, Niger Republic.
In a statement issued on Thursday December 26, 2024 by its spokesperson, Dr Ladan Salihu, the LND, noted that the issue at stake transcends mere diplomatic relations as it touches on the country ‘s national security
The Source reports that the Niger Republic recently accused Nigeria of working with some Western powers, particularly, France, to distablize the country.
The Republic insisted that the Nigerian Government, with generous funding from France, its estranged former Colonial Master, has been promoting instability in Niger through the instrumentality of Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.
Although, the Nigerian Government has since refuted the allegations as false and baseless, the LND has emphasized the need for an independent enquiry.
The group noted that going by the unusual cosy relationship between President Tinubu and France, it will be difficult to discountenance the allegations by Niger.
“The League of Northern Democrats LND, expresses grave concern over the allegations made by the President of Niger Republic in a Hausa video clip that has gone viral, accusing France of complicity in funding and equipping Boko Haram and implicating prominent Nigerian officials including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former NIA DG Ahmed Rufai ,and the NSA Nuhu Ribadu.
“Notwithstanding, the poor diplomatic relations between Niger on the one hand and France ,and Nigeria on the other, these allegations made by a sitting President with access to sensitive intelligence and specific information are too significant to be ignored as mere international politics.
“Considering the severe impact of Boko Haram’s insurgency on Northern Nigeria, these claims demand a transparent and immediate response from the Nigerian Government to uphold national security and restore public trust .
“More so with the current unusual close and intense personal and Governmental relationship between President Tinubu and France, including the signing of bilateral agreements, there are reasons to believe these allegations.
“We, therefore, respectfully call on the Federal Government and Ahmed Rufai and Nuhu Ribadu as esteem Northerners and Public Servants to provide the Nation, especially the North that is bearing the brunt of the insurgency, with concrete, cogent and verifiable evidence refuting and denying these allegations.
“Their silence risks further eroding the confidence of the people, most especially Northerners .The Government must clearly articulate its position, ensuring that no Nigerian official is unfairly implicated in activities undermining our nation’s sovereignty and stability”, LND’s statement reads in part.
