The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate closure of all satellite units of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, and Special Tactical Squad across the country, indefinitely.
The Police Chief gave this order following the indictment of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, and former Head of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, Abba Kyari, and others by authorities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, over alleged drug dealings.
Kyari and four others were arrested for questioning by the Police, who handed them over to the NDLEA.
The NDLEA had earlier declared them wanted for involvement with an International Drug Cartel.
Kyari had earlier, too, been suspended and was facing panel and disciplinary committee in connection with cybercrime fraudster, Ramon Abass, popularly known as Hushpuppi.
The NDLEA alleged that Kyari attempted to bribe an official of the NDLEA with $61,000 to facilitate the release of Cocaine seized from Two drug barons.
All serving officers in the satellite units have been asked to report to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for debriefing.
Confirming this development to Channels TV, a Police source said that authorities have directed that serving officers and men in the unit will be demobilized and posted to commands across the country.
The Force Management also directed that the IRT/STS Headquarters in Abuja should be fortified and organised for enhanced operational performance to combat emerging trends.
In July 2020, former -Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu had directed the disbandment of the satellite offices and bases of the IRT and STS, leaving the headquarters of the units under the State Investigation Bureau as a response to the public outcry on human right infringement by some officers of these units.
Kyari is currently in the custody of the NDLEA and will be prosecuted on conclusion of investigations.
