Twitter: FG Threatens Nigerians With Jail Term

A number of Nigerians could be headed to jail for using Twitter. So says the Federal Republic of Nigeria, headed by Muhamma du Buhari, a former Army General, who was a Military Head of State, but now, a Civilian President.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of those still using twitter in the country, after it was banned in Nigeria on Friday.

The Nigerian Government, angry that Twitter took down a post by the President, which it considered hateful, bordering on genocide banned it in Nigeria. Incidentally, Facebook has pulled out the same statement.

Malami said in a statement on Saturday that offenders of the Federal Government’s ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria will be prosecuted.

The statement, signed by Dr Umar Gwandu, the Minister’s Special Assistant, stated that “Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of opetations of Twitter in Nigeria.

“Malami directed the DPPF to liase with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, National Communication Communication (NCC) and other relevant government agencies to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.”

The ban on Twitter has attracted strong condemnation from home and abroad. Mike Ozekhome SAN, advised Buhari to also ban and dissolve Nigeria.

Both the Governments of Britain and Sweden, condemned the action, while Twitter said the ban was inexplicable.
