Trial Of Officers Caught Extorting Owerri Residents Begins – Police

The Imo State Police Command said it has commenced disciplinary  actions against some of its personnel recently involved in alleged extortionist tendencies.

The Source reports that a few days ago, the social media space was saturated with a video clip of four operatives attached to the State Command mounting illegal checkpoints and extorting motorists particularly, commercial vehicle and tricycle operators, as well as and motorcyclists in Owerri the Imo State capital.

Reports say their operations, mostly undertaken at odd hours, especially, early morning and late evenings, were more often than not illegal .

Many motorists and other road users were said to have, in the last few weeks, presented a plethora of complaints, both oral and written against the unprofessional conducts of the Police officers before the video recording of their escapades surfaced.

The viral video forced the Imo Police Authorities to order their arrest and detention on Sunday October 13 .

In a statement on Thursday, October 17, 2024, spokesperson for the Command, Henry Okoye, informed that an in-house (orderly room) trial of the four suspected operatives has commenced.

“The Imo State Police Command has commenced an orderly room trial of officers caught in a viral video extorting motorists in Owerri.

“These officers who have been in detention are Inspector Ibrahim Nainna, Unaka Maxvirgin, Inspector Miller Ibanitta and Sergeant Alozie .Anthony.

“The results of the proceedings will be communicated in due course”, the police statement noted.
