As part of measures to stem the resurgence of terrorist attacks on some parts of Borno State, Governor Babagana Zulum on Saturday, May 10, 2025, imposed a comprehensive ban on sale of petroleum products in Bama, Banki, and other adjourning parts of Bama local Councils.
The Source reports that the relative normalcy that returned to most parts of the State has been severely shattered of late. Terrorist elements have almost taken back their lost territories.
Resettlement centres in liberated areas, particularly Gwoza town and others in the Borno North Districts, have been subjected to heavy terrorist attacks in the past few months.
The attacks, mostly targeted at military formations and civilian resettlement enclaves have also resulted in some high and low profile military casualties and a large number of civilian deaths.
The situation forced the Borno State authorities to raise the alarm bell on several occasions, drawing attention to the renewed threat posed by the insurgents.
A statement on Saturday from Dauda Iliya, the Governor’s Media Aide, informed that the ban was sequel to wide consultations with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
According to him, the measure is part of the State Government’s efforts at halting the prevailing security challenges in the state.
The Source further reports that Bama ,the famous prison town, has been perceived as a flourishing supply corridor for terrorist groups, especially, Boko Haram and ISWAP.
“Most of the weapons, ammunition, and essential items being used by the insurgents are believed to be passing through Bama and adjourning towns.
“Some, if not most of the filling stations and other dealers in Bama Local Councils are strongly believed to be making brisk businesses supplying petroleum products to terrorists and other criminal elements.
“They are also said to be serving as informal but reliable couriers of trans border weapon and ammunition to the terrorists.
“I have directed the immediate ban on the sale of petrol in Bama town ,Banki ,and other parts of Bama Local Government Area.
“Let me make it clear: there will be no sacred cows in the enforcement of this ban. Security agencies have been given strict orders to clamp down on any filling station or individuals contravening this directive.
“Anyone found culpable will be dealt with accordingly”, the statement quoted Governor Zulum as warning.
