Tin Can Customs Hands Over N8 Billion Worth Of Seized Hard Drugs To NDLEA

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has reaffirmed its commitment towards safeguarding the country from the unwholesome activities of smugglers and other criminal elements.

The Comptroller of the Tin Can Island Port Command, Frank Onyeka, made this known on Monday March 10, 2025, while officially handing over seized, illicit drugs worth over N8billion to the authorities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA at the port premises in Lagos.

At the handing over ceremony held at the Enforcement Unit of the Command ,Comptroller Onyeka informed that the drugs were intercepted due to the high level of credible intelligence gathered by personnel of the Service ,in collaboration with the men of the NDLEA .

A statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson OE Ivara SC, noted that the seized drugs were laden in two 20 feet containers which were intercepted in different batches .

The containers were falsely declared to be having used vehicles and auto spare parts originating from Canada, the NCS statement indicated.

“1×20 ft Container no TCNU 194586/1 which was intercepted on the 27th of February 2025 was found to contain 128 packets of Cannabis Indica which weighed total of 63 .75 kilograms with an estimated street value of Four Hundred and Fourteen Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Naira only ( 414,375,000.00)

“The second container with no MSMU 838666/3 was intercepted on the 12th of December 2024 and was found to contain 97 packets of Crystal Methamphetamine weighing a total of 78.3 kilograms with an estimated street value of Two Billion Naira only ( N2 ,000,000,000.00) ,and 1,735 packets of Cannabis Indica with a total weight of 867.5 kilograms at with an estimated street value of Five Billion, Six Hundred and Thirty Eight Million ,Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira ( N5,638,750,000.00) which brought the total street value of the seized drugs to Eight Billion ,Fifty Three Million ,One Hundred and Twenty Five Thousand Naira only ( N8,053,125,000.00)”, Comptroller Onyeka noted

According to him, these seizures underscore the Tin Can Island NCS Command’s dedication to safeguarding the nation from the menace of illicit drugs .

He reiterated the Command’s commitment towards facilitating trade while at the same time remaining vigilant against activities that threaten national security and public health.

Comptroller Onyeka reassured that the Command will continue to enhance operational strategies including intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration for effective combating of smuggling and other criminal activities.

He, therefore, appealed for the understanding and support of critical stakeholders in the efforts at protecting the nation’s borders and ports.

The Commander Tin Can Island Strategic Command, Mitchell Ofoyeju, received the seized hard substances on behalf of the NDLEA.
