The ongoing security crisis in the country has reached an alarming proportion prompting the National assembly to propose a security summit to discuss the issue.
Since after the Benue massacre, more killings have gone on in Benue and Nassarawa state, according to reports. Only recently, the Security agencies invaded and allegedly killed the native doctor that has been involved in the preparation of protective fetish for the Benue Vigilante youths that are being trained to defend themselves against Fulani herdsmen. There are rumors that the military-particularly the Nigerian Air force-were given a standing order not to use force on the herdsmen.
The seeming pampering of the herdsmen by the presidency was said to have irked some legislators. The security issue was moved from the plenary to committee rooms because lawmakers insists that the security meeting, on the instance of the National Assembly, should be held at the Nigerian Institute of International affairs. But the Presidency insisted it must be held in Aso Rock, and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has been placed squarely in the middle of the crisis. Having agreed with the presidency that the meeting will be held in Aso Rock, he had an uphill task trying to convince the Senators, majority of who has flatly refused. “The position of Oga is that if Buhari must address them during the security summit, he should come to institute of international affairs to do it,” Said an aid to a senator. The grandstanding has resulted in an indefinite postponement of the summit to allow tempers to cool down.
