The security structures put in place to tackle terrorism and insurgency has all but collapsed as there has been increased onslaught on Nigerians in recent times amid accusations by the international community of genocide against Christians.
Within the last seven days, there has been abductions of people; buses have been hijacked; Boko Haram gained more grounds in the north east, and terrorists opening fire at train station in Kaduna. With all these happening, the presidency reacted with the age long blame game: Bombs were no longer exploding as it were during the era of former president Goodluck Jonathan; hence the country is safe.
Reports indicate that Ezenwata, GUO and the Young shall grow Luxury buses were hijacked along Lokoja road in Kogi state by unknown gunmen. The buses and passengers were taken to unknown destinations. According to unconfirmed reports, Northerners were told to disembark and others taken away.
Reports also indicated that passengers traveling from Abuja to Maiduguri were kidnapped and killed by unknown gunmen, their bodies littered on the roads.Only recently, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, lost one of their regional president to Boko Haram. He was beheaded after the terrorist organization rejected the ransom that they initially demanded. The same week, a student was also beheaded by Boko Haram. And a train station in Kaduna was attacked in broad daylight with intending passengers killed.
In all these, no arrests have been made.
Recently, President Buhari announced that the Army will be withdrawn from the troubled area of Borno and replaced by the police. But reports indicates that the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, which was deployed to Maiduguri, complained that the military fired at them in their efforts to chase the Boko Haram insurgents. The military has not officially responded to that allegation.
Despite withdrawing the army, President Buhari is said to have ordered military bombardment of terrorist enclaves.
He told the foreign media that he will use his civil war experience to defeat Boko Haram. He has been president for more than four years.
