As Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is set to name a 25-man team that will jet out of Abuja to London, England today after the team’s meeting president Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa later today before traveling to London to face the three lions of England, insinuations is rife that the Super Eagles gaffer is likely to drop Elderson Echiejile, Chidozie Awaziem, Stephen Eze, Uche Agbo and Daniel Akpeyi.
The magazine can authoritatively disclose that the French-German tactician, Rohr, was visibly annoyed with his left backs, the duo of Echiejile and Ola Aina for their abysmal performance against DR Congo in the international friendly played last Monday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
With this development, the Rohr has said that he will be taking only two players each for the right back and left back positions. Abdullahi Shehu and Tyronne Ebuehi are the only two players jostling for the right back positions, which basically means that the two are going to be on the plane to Russia.
In the left back position, Echiejile, Aina and Brian Idowu will be competing for the two available slot. Idowu is certain to make the team to Russia having impressed Rohr in the three friendly matches he played against the Albacieleste of Argentina, Poland and Serbia. But he was rested against DR Congo.
So, Echiejile and Aina are the two players jostling to join Idowu for the left back role.
Rohr has been impressed with the performance of Dele Ajiboye in training, giving him an edge over Chippa United goalie, Daniel Akpeyi. Akpeyi has been castigated by fans over his abysmal performance against Argentina and South Africa in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers in Uyo, and the school boy error he made against Argentina.
Feelers reaching the magazine by close source to the Rohr disclosed that Akpeyi maybe dropped with Francis Uzoho who is the present number goalie of the team alongside Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Ajiboye could make the cut.
A close source to Rohr told the magazine that Stephen Eze who shone like a star at the African Championship for the Super Eagles Team B will be omitted from the final 23-man list, likewise Uche Agbo who plays in Belgium and Chiedozie Awaziem who is still struggling with an injury he copped while playing for his club, Nantes FC in France.
The magazine exclusively gathered that the trio of Uche Agbo, Junior Lokosa and Stephen Eze will surely be axed by the Rohr.
