Ahead of the forthcoming Local Council Polls, the Rivers State Police Command, on Tuesday August 26 , 2025, cautioned against any attempts to foment troubles, or disruption of the exercise.
The Police Command has, also, imposed restriction of movement in all parts of the State during the exercise.
The Source reports that the Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC is billed to conduct elections in all the 23 Local Government Areas of the State on Saturday August 30, to select chairmen and Councilors after the Supreme Court’s nullification of earlier exercise on October 5, 2024,
Addressing the media on its preparedness for the exercise, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, informed that the Service is ready to play its role of escorting and securing all election materials round the State.
He expressed the readiness of the Police to deal decisively with would-be trouble makers including cultists who may be planning to disrupt the polls.
According to Adepoju, there will be restriction on vehicular and human movements from midnight of Friday August 29 to 6.00 pm on the election day, August 30, 2025.
However, those on essential services have been exempted from the movement restrictions.
“You are all aware that on the 30th of this month (August), we are going to have the Local Government election.
“We have done all due diligence to ensure that it is going to be peaceful.
“We have been holding meetings with stakeholders and we have equally gone to local Governments and every other place to sensitize our people.
“We have, also, directed the Local Government Sole Administrators to equally talk to people and hold stakeholders meetings which have been done with positive responses.
“All arrangements have been made to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. All the Security Agencies will be involved in the exercise with the Police as the lead agency”, the CP noted
Adepoju warned that much as efforts have been made to check the activities of cultists, thugs,
and other criminal elements, security personnel will not hesitate to wield the big stick against those who may want to create chaos and disrupt the exercise.
He, therefore, called on parents , guardians and other stakeholders to advise their wards against involvement in any acts capable of breaching the peace of the state before, during and after the election.
“We have, also, done the needful to ensure that all cult activities and those that may want to disrupt the peace during the election have been checked.
“Every security agency will take part in this election because it is a state of emergency. Definitely, we are going to have Police Mobile Force Operatives from Abuja to come and complement our efforts of our men here.
“We have enough manpower on the ground for this election. I assure you there won’t be problems. If there are people trying to foment trouble, we have all it takes to keep them in check” Adepoju assured.
