Rivers State was saved a major tragedy when a former Minister for Transportation, Dr Abiye Sekibo, escaped his assassination by a hair’s breath. It was on Thursday evening.
Sekibo was saved by the Land Cruiser bullet proof vehicle he was riding in.
He is the State’s Director General of the Atiku/Okowa Campaign Council.
Not only was Sekibo attacked, the venue of the PDP Presidential Campaign Rally, which was almost 100% ready for the Presidential rally, was set ablaze.
Sekibo quickly pointed accusing fingers at Governor Nyesom Wike.
The Governor, who has been at loggerheads with the National leadership of the Party and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, since he lost both the Presidential ticket and the Vice Presidential ticket, had declared all PDP supporters of the Atiku/Okowa ticket enemies.
He had put all kinds of laws in place in the State to get at them.
A few days ago, he revoked the permit given to the hosting of the PDP Presidential Campaign Rally at the State’s biggest Stadium in Port Harcourt citing an inexplicable excuse. Two days ago, he restored it, but the Rivers PDP PCC, tired of Wike’s antics, rejected the restoration, and called it a Greek gift.
Wike had, also, last week, ordered the arrest and prosecution of alleged PDP Atiku supporters in the State at the venue of their meeting. 20 of them are being prosecuted.
On Wednesday, a Federal High Court restrained the Governor and Security Agencies, from harassing and/or arresting some high profile members of the PDP loyal to the National Leadership of the Party and the Candidate. They include former National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, Sekibo, Senate Lee Maeba, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Honourable Austin Opara, among others.
Accusing Wike of the alleged assassination attempt on him, Sekibo said he went to Rainbow Town, Porthacourt to inspect the level of preparation at the new venue for the Presidential Rally, when political thugs, who wore Police Uniform, at the venue, opened fire on him. He said their vehicles were Police hilux vehicles attached to Government House, PH. He, also, said the venue being prepared for the Rally was set on fire.
Sekibo: “As we approached the site, those Policemen who were watching the fire, opened fire on our vehicle. I looked at tye Hilux vehicles, they were Police Hilux Vehicles attached to the Governor of Rivers State.”
