The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has backed the retention of the Nigerian Presidency in the south. As part of the efforts that this is ensured, the PDP Professionals said the party must ensure that its presidential ticket for the 2027 election is zoned to the south.
The Professionals took the position barely a week after reports that the leadership of the PDP has decided to zone the position to the region.
The party has yet to make a categorical statement on the issue.
This comes as the ruling APC has zoned its presidential ticket to the south, and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a southerner as its sole candidate.
Obinna Nwachukwu, the Protem National Coordinator, CP-PDP, disclosed on Sunday that the professionals took the position after consultations and carefully observing the political development in the country.
According to the PDP Professionals, by zoning the presidency to south the PDP has a better chance of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All progressives Congress, APC in the next election.
They insist that zoning the position to the south will allow the region to complete its eight years, as part of the power rotation arrangement in the country, after which the position will go back to the north. This will promote stability in the country, they said, adding that the power rotation agreement must not be tampered with.
Nwachukwu: “As an umbrella assembly of dedicated professionals in the PDP, the CP-PDP, after far-reaching consultations and analysis of the electoral fortunes of the party, submits that zoning the Presidential ticket to the south gives the PDP a vantage position to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
“With the benefit of our expertise in the current political demography in the country, it is clear that zoning the ticket to the contrary or throwing it open will be counter-productive to the PDP as it would upstage the already established eight-year power swing between the north and the south.
“Given the failure of the Tinubu administration and the general desire by Nigerians to vote him out in 2027, it is imperative for national stability to democratically replace with a better hand from the South in 2027 to complete the south’s eight years and thereafter return power to the north in 2031.”
Recall that some political analysts have criticised the PDP for the failure to zone its presidential ticket to south during the 2023 election, saying that was the reason why the party lost the election to the APC.
They described the action as a ‘mortal sin’ that must not be committed this time around if the party must remain relevant in the nation’s politics.
