Bamidele Akingboye

By Ayodele Oni

The Social Democratic Party’s Governorship Candidate, Ondo State,  Bamidele Akingboye, has condemned the arrest of some protesters in Akure, the State Capital, in the early hours of Saturday.

He called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to immediately and unconditionally release these citizens who were exercising their fundamental right to peaceful assembly.

According to reports, security forces, including the Army, Civil Defence, Police, and Amotekun, allegedly acting on the directive of Governor Aiyedatiwa, apprehended protesters in the Alagbaka area of Akure South.

The demonstrators were subsequently taken to an undisclosed location.

Akingboye emphasized that peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy and a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

He questioned the governor’s apparent fear of public demonstration and reminded the state government of its obligation to protect citizens’ rights, not suppress them.

The SDP candidate stated that he joined the voices of concerned Ondo State youths in demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all arrested protesters.

He advised  Governor Aiyedatiwa to respect the democratic process and engage in dialogue with citizens rather than resorting to intimidation tactics.

Akingboye reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rights of all Ondo State residents and pledged to foster an environment of open communication and respect for civil liberties if elected governor

60m Northern Youths Rally For Tinubu

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

The National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Movement, AYCM, Kabiru Yusuf says over 60 million youths in the northern parts of Nigeria are rooting for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The youths have also extended their support for senate President Godswill Akpabio, citing the synergy between the Presidency and the National assembly.

Yusuf made the remark at a press conference in Kaduna on Saturday, coming at a time when the critics of the administration warn that the president no longer enjoyed the groundswell of support he hitherto enjoyed in the region.

The recent massive hunger protests in the region, analysts insist, is a pointer that the north is really disenchanted with the Tinubu’s administration.

But speaking today in Kaduna, the youth group said their support for Tinubu and Akpabio is “sacrosanct”, noting that they decided to support the adminsitration the same way they supported President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group sited Tinubu’s milestone achievements, including the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway as reasons for supporting the president.

The administration’s achievements also include the signing of the South East Development Commission, SEDC, law, Students Loans initiative, amongst others, the Arewa youths said. 0

AYCM said, “The Coastal Superhighway Initiative, the South East Development Commission, The NYSC Trust Fund, and the Student Loan Scheme stand as tangible testaments to the forward-thinking leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s Administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Despite facing economic challenges, his administration has adeptly navigated the country’s affairs without accruing excessive debt, a departure from past administrations’ practices.

“According to Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance, the reintroduction of Forex and Petroleum Subsidy would jeopardize the progress Nigeria has made in reducing the percentage of revenue allocated to servicing debts, which has decreased from 98% to 67%. This could compel Nigeria to borrow for essential governmental functions, such as salary payments and infrastructure development.”

“The decision to eliminate the oil subsidy was taken in the interest of the nation’s collective welfare. However, it has inadvertently led to a surge in prices of essential goods and food items, triggering protests and unrest, with some individuals and politicians exploiting the situation to advocate for a change in government, solely based on President Bola Tinubu’s Southern origin. Despite these challenges, we advocate for unity and inclusivity across all regions of the country.”

“We make bold to declare that President Bola Tinubu remains resolute in forging collaboration and engagement with all stakeholders, including the youth, to realize the vision of a prosperous Nigeria. The ongoing refurbishment of three refineries underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring efficient domestic petroleum supply and meeting the nation’s energy needs. Muhammadu Buhari’s administration ( 2015-2023) according to the Al-Jazeera metrics scorecard in 2023 showed an abysmal failure in leadership, leaving the country with a debt profile of over N70 trillion and a failure to tackle the subsidy regime. No northerners came out to protest for an End to bad governance.”

“We implore the youth, women, and men to exercise patience and solidarity with the government as we collectively work towards a better Nigeria.”

“The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been commended for his articulate and proactive leadership in the National Assembly. During his tenure in the 10th Assembly, several people-centric bills and initiatives, such as the Student Loan Bill and the NYSC Trust Fund Bill, were passed, significantly impacting youth empowerment. In one month in office (December 2023) Senator Godswill Akpabio passed the budget for 2024 within record time. Whereas none of his predecessors were able to achieve such a feat. Senator Bukola Saraki (2015-2019 ) passed the budget in 4 months ( march 2016) while Senator Ahmed Lawan( 2019-2023) passed it in 3 months ( Dec 2019). The Senate under Senator Godswill Akpabio rejected a proposed increase in electricity tariff in February 2024, a move that reflects Akpabio’s deep understanding of the financial challenges faced by Nigerians.”

“The collaborative efforts and transparency in engaging stakeholders have been particularly noteworthy, alongside the innovative legislative processes introduced to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Under Senator Godswill Akpabio’s leadership, 25 bills have been passed into law and 115 resolutions aimed at driving Nigeria’s socio-economic development, national cohesion, growth, and security stability.”

“The synergy between the Senate and the executive branch has never been this cordial even during the tenure of Senator David Mark ( 2007-2015) who was the longest-serving Senate president. Senator Godswill Akpabio’s crucial role is facilitating governance and promoting national development, seeing Nigeria as one indivisible nation.

“Looking ahead, leaders must prioritize the welfare of the people and foster unity, peace, and good governance to ensure sustainable progress in Nigeria. The call by the North for Senator Godswill Akpabio to resign despite his legacy impact is cross-prejudice and unhealthy to our polity,” the movement said.

ECOWAS: Tinubu Woos Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso Juntas

Tinubu ECOWAS Leadership

President Tinubu has promised to ensure the return of  Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso to the Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS.

the president made the remark in a meeting with with the ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Nigerian leader is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Recall that the three West African nations had left the bloc after the military took over the reins of government.

The have since refused to rejoin ECOWAS despite efforts by leaders of thought from the region.

But president Tinubu said on Friday that efforts are ongoing to “persuade them to return” promising to give “them reasons to come back to us”.

Tinubu said: ”It is in our hearts to ensure that security is enhanced and that constitutional government is defended and promoted in our region.

”It has been a challenging tenure for me since three members indicated their exit. We will work hard to persuade them to return, whichever way.

”No man is smarter than the group of heads here. We will do everything to offer a hand of friendship to them and give them reasons to come back to us.”

State Of The Nation: Anyaoku-Led Patriots Meet Tinubu, Demand ‘Peoples’ Constitution

0
Tinubu and Anyaoku

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to push for for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

But this will be done after the ongoing economic reform, the president said.

Tinubu made the remark when he met with The Patriots, a group of eminent Nigerians led by a former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku in Aso Rock, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the group had requested that the president send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly, for the amendment of the Constitution, and formation of a Constituent Assembly to draft a new “peoples’ constitution’ for the country, after the draft document has been approved by Nigerians through a referendum.

Speaking President Tinubu said the ongoing reform by his government is necessary to turn the country around, saying as a country ‘we have no other choice” if Nigerians want a better and more prosperous nation to emerge from current economic quagmire.

He said once the administration is through with the reforms he will send a bill to the NASS to change the constitution.

The Patriots demands, the  statement said include, ”The convening of a national constituent assembly with the mandate to produce a draft people’s democratic constitution. On a non-political basis, the constituent assembly should be of directly elected individuals from the 36 states of the federation, possibly three individuals per state and one from the FCT.

”They should be assisted by seven constitutional lawyers, one drawn from each of the six geopolitical zones and the FCT.  The deliberations of the constituent assembly should take into full account the 1960/63 constitutions, as well as the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference and indeed of the various national conferences that considered the Nigerian constitutions.

”The draft constitution, produced by the constituent assembly, should be put to a national referendum, and if approved, should then be signed by the President as the genuine Nigerian people’s constitution.”

.

Responding President Tinubu said, ”I have listened to you carefully, and this is not a group that I can ignore. This is a group of patriots reflecting the heart and aspirations of society. I thank all of you for being here.

”I have faced the challenge of this democracy inherited from your struggles. I must recognise the fact that these challenges are most required for good governance.

”We have no other choice, and I also believe it is most difficult to manage the twists and turns of democratic governance.

”I want to assure all of you that, as I listened to your two major requests on the path to a referendum, that should lead to constitutional measures that will fit our diversity and governance so that we avoid conflicts and break-ups.

”I believe in the unity of this country, and I want to assure you that whatever is necessary to put happiness and good governance in the hands of all Nigerians is what I would do.

”I am currently preoccupied with economic reform. That is my first priority. Once this is in place, as soon as possible, I will look at other options, including constitutional review as you recommended and other options,” Tinubu said.

Kayode Egbetokun - IGP

By Akinwale Kasali

Organizers of the Nationwide protest against Hunger, Sufferings and Bad Governance have called for the immediate sack of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for the killing of some protesters by the Police in some parts of the country.

Hassan Taiwo, National spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, and leader of #EndBadGovernance in Lagos, made the call during the Candle Light Symposium for those who lost their lives in the #EndBadGovernance Nationwide Protest held in Ikeja, Lagos State Capital.

At the event held at the Rights House, Hassan stated that: “We are demanding the immediate sack of the Inspector General of Police over his role in the killing of innocent and unarmed protesters.”

A three-day mourning has, also, been declared by the group at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, for those killed nationwide during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

The hunger strike, which was earlier slated to last for 10 days, entered it’s 10th Saturday, and is expected to end same Saturday.

In the same vein, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, led a Candle Light Procession to the Office of the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide  Sanwo-olu, at Alausa, Ikeja, to show their displeasure over the death of some protesters.

NYSC Calls On Security Agencies, Imo, Anambra Govts, To Help Locate Missing Staff

Okun Christopher and Daniel Effiong Asibong - NYSC Staffers

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Management of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, has called on Security Agencies, as well as the Imo and Anambra State Governments to take steps and locate the whereabouts of their missing staffers.

They have also appealed to public spirited individuals to assist by volunteering relevant intelligence that could lead to the location and rescue of the personnel.

The two NYSC staff members –  Okun Christopher, the Akwa Ibom state Coordinator, and his driver Daniel Effiong Asibong, went missing on Monday, July 29, 2024, along Onitsha-Owerri Road en route Akwa Ibom state .

A statement issued  on Friday August 9, by the Director, Information and Public Relations of the NYSC, Eddy Megwa, said the two missing staff members were  traveling in a white official Hilux SUV, with registration number, 27D31FG, as at the time they went missing.

The Source reports that the date and location coincided with the killing of four policemen and a civilian during an operation by some gunmen.

It will be recalled that on Monday, July 29, some gunmen attacked and killed their victims along the Owerri-Onitsha road in Owerri the Imo state capital.

The Imo state. police Command has since blamed the tragic incident on suspected members of the Indigenous peoples of Biafra IPOB, and its militant wing the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

In a statement after the attack, Henry Okoye, Spokesperson for the Imo Police Command, said the dastardly act was perpetrated by some members of the proscribed group on a sit -at-home enforcement.

He described them as cowards who have decided to adopt a guerilla method in their operations.

The Source further reports that the day ( July,29) also was the beginning  date for a one week long sit-at-home order proclaimed by the Simon Ekpa-led Autopilots militia  South-east region.

The NYSC in its statement urged the two States and individuals to collaborate with Security Agencies in the efforts to locate the missing personnel.

“Anyone with useful information regarding their whereabouts should contact the law enforcement agents in Anambra and Imo states, any of the 37 NYSC state Secretariats, Area Offices and National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, or the nearest Police Station for immediate action,” Megwa stated.

Nigeria Needs Bold, Decisive Action To Tackle Numerous Challenges” – Fmr President Obasanjo

0
Olusegun Obasanjo

By Ayodele Oni

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has  emphasized that it is not the form or system of government that is Nigeria’s problem, but the way things are done.

The former president who said he backed demands of #EndBadGovernance protesters, urged the government to listen to the people’s concerns and stop pretending that everything is fine.

“Our main problem is ourselves. Whether we adopt a single term of six years or two terms of four years, if we maintain the same mentality and approach, nothing will change.

“The real issue is ourselves. Yes, the system needs rethinking, but the character of people in government must change. With all due respect, many in government should currently be behind bars or on the gallows.”

Obasanjo spoke on Friday during a meeting with six members of the House of Representatives at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

The legislators, who are co-sponsoring bills for a single six-year presidential term, a rotational presidency between the North and South, and rotational governorship among the three senatorial districts in each state, included Abdulmalik Danga (Kogi), Dr. Usman Midala (Borno), Matthew Nwogu (Imo), Peter Aniekwe (Anambra), Kama Nkemkanma (Ebonyi), and Ugochinyere Ikenga (Imo).

He pointed out that Nigeria will not advance towards its goals unless both its leaders and citizens adopt what he referred to as “moral rearmament.”

He also cautioned that Nigeria is teetering on the edge of disaster, warning that without bold and decisive action to tackle its numerous challenges, the situation could become explosive.

Obasanjo characterized Nigeria as a nation that makes “two steps forward, one step aside, and four steps backward.”

Obasanjo lamented that subsequent governments have failed to build on the groundwork he laid, leading to considerable setbacks for the country.

“As I have warned earlier, we should recognise that we are all sitting on a powder keg if we fail to begin doing the right thing. For instance, what the youth are demanding is very legitimate and should be listened to. Why should they be denied what rightfully belongs to them?

“They are frustrated, they are hungry, they are angry, they are unemployed, and they deserve to be heard.

“More than anything else, such as changing our system of government or adopting a single term of six or four years, we must change our ways of doing things. We must reform our thinking and character.

“I wish that succeeding governments had built upon the foundation we laid, even if not as quickly as hoped, but sadly, the blocks we put in place are being removed.

“What I know about Nigeria is that if we get it right — both leadership and team — because one tree does not make a forest, you need a good leader but also a good team for a well-done job.

“If we get it right in about two and a half years, we could overcome some challenges, and in about 10 years, we will have a solid foundation. In about 25 years, we could be there.

“But we always take one step forward, two steps aside, and four steps backward, which is why we are where we are.

“For me, it is not just about the system; we may need to rethink our liberal democracy. In Africa, we often talk about loyal opposition, but what we do is reach a consensus, and then there is no opposition; everyone is on the same page and moves together.

“In many African languages, the word for opposition translates to ‘enemies.’ What do you do with loyal enemies? Once you take power, you claim everything, and the opposition is left in the wilderness. This approach is not beneficial. We need everyone to join hands to advance society.”

OPINION: Dangote Refinery: Business Or Tourist Site

0
Dangote-Refinery

With exactly a week to go in his presidency, President Muhammadu Buhari on May 22, 2023, inaugurated the Dangote Refinery, a 650,000 barrels per day facility reputed to be the largest Single-Train petroleum refinery in the world. There was pomp and circumstance as the refinery reportedly came on board, but as it would later turn out, Buhari would appear to have been goaded into inaugurating an uncompleted refinery. It might also be that the former President was just too eager to have his name inscribed on what was perceived as a legacy project.

That action would subsequently set the stage for events that have called to question, Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s readiness to operate as a player in the Nigerian petroleum sector. To begin with, the promise made by Dangote during the inauguration of the refinery to the effect that the plant would commence in August 2023 did not materialize simply because the refinery wasn’t ready contrary to the story put out by the Buhari Presidency and Dangote himself.

Production of diesel and aviation fuel only commenced in the first quarter of 2024 after the refinery had, between December 2023 and January 2024, received six cargo supplies of crude.

Recall that Dangote, while announcing the commencement of production of the two products, thanked President Bola Tinubu and the two regulatory agencies in the Upstream and Midstream and Downstream sectors of the Nigerian petroleum industry as well as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for their support.

Read him: “We thank President Bola Tinubu for his support and for making our dream come true. This production, as witnessed today, would not have been possible without his visionary leadership and prompt attention to details. His intervention at various stages cleared all impediments thereby accelerating the actualisation of the project. We also thank the NNPC, NUPRC and NMDPRA for their support. These organisations have been our dependable partners in this historic journey.”

It is important to note the remarkable comments by Dangote supra because just a few months later, he would turn round to refer to the NNPC Limited and the NMDPRA as unpatriotic entities working against the refinery and Nigeria. Dangote’s histrionics began when he accused the NNPC Ltd and International Oil Companies (IOCs) of refusing to sell crude to him. He said they preferred to sell to companies operating outside Nigeria. When the folly in his allegations was laid bare by the fact that both the NNPC Ltd and the IOCs already had crude supply agreements predating even the setting up of Dangote Refinery, which could not be breached without exposing them to litigation, Dangote changed tactics. He next accused the NNPC Ltd of setting up a blending plant in Malta from where they import poor quality fuel into the country.

Some discerning industry players were knowledgeable enough to know that the accusation amounted to red herring to distract Nigerians from the real issues. One of these was that just before he hurled the allegation against the NNPC Ltd, the NMDPRA had alerted Nigerians to the high sulphur content of diesel produced and sold by Dangote Refinery. The sulphur content in the diesel, which grossly exceeded internationally-acceptable standard, is injurious both to humans and vehicles.

In addition, the NMDPRA said Dangote had lobbied government to ban importation of petroleum products since his refinery was already producing them. According to Engineer Farouk Ahmed, CEO of NMDPRA: “Dangote is requesting that we suspend or stop importation, especially of AGO and DPK, and direct all marketers to his refinery. That is not good for the nation in terms of energy security, and it is not good for the market because of the monopoly.”

Realizing that his gaslighting of the NNPCL and NMDPRA had failed to sway Nigerians to his side, Dangote has devised a new stratagem of whipping up sentiments, using leading public officials in parliament, non-state actors in the civil society organizations, and the media to procure essential validation and association. To achieve this mind-bending objective, he has turned the refinery, which ought to be striving hard to meet up its production target, into a tourist site where these leading public figures visit and eulogise his ingenuity. Top on the list of visitors to the refinery is Godswill Akpabio, President of Nigeria ‘s senate who led a cast of ranking senators to the refinery.

While touring the site, Akpabio sang like a canary: “They told us in Abuja that Dangote Refinery is a farce but we have come here and seen for ourselves that the refinery is alive and running. Dangote has put to shame a lot of people. They are wondering how it will be possible for a single individual to accomplish what a whole nation could not accomplish; what 240 million people could not maintain; what a continent could not do and then one person will build 650,000bpd project.

“They keep wondering how one person can succeed where nations have failed; where continent has failed. But Dangote has done it. It is highly commendable. We came to see the refinery because we in the current senate believe in the Nigerian dream. We didn’t come as a doubting Thomas but we came because we believe the project, we came to rekindle the hope of Nigerians and the Nigerian’s can do spirit.”

Akpabio also reportedly said: “Mr. Dangote, I pity you a lot because even your friends will envy you simply because they will keep wondering how can you succeed when nations, and continents have failed? Now that we have seen for ourselves, we are here to announce our own endorsement of this major project. It is also shocking to see that we produce sufficient fertilisers for Nigeria and enough to be exported.”

Less than a month after Akpabio and company visited, Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, led his colleagues in the House on another junket to the Refinery. Less effusive in his adulation of Dangote, Speaker Abbas nonetheless eulogized the businessman. Read him: “Dangote Refinery symbolizes not only the strength and potential of Nigerian industry but also the dedication and vision of one of our most esteemed business leaders, Mr Aliko Dangote. As we tour this state-of-the-art facility, it is impossible not to appreciate the significant contributions that Dangote Group is making to our economy.”

It was not only our parliamentarians that have been mobilized on excursion, like high school students, to the refinery. A coalition of Civil Society Organizations, many of which had remained silent amid the socio-economic challenges faced by Nigerians, found it a “worthy ” venture to visit the Dangote Refinery on what seemed a pilgrimage to achieve a united voice of validation for the facility. The CSOs, now pushing to outshine other tourists, have arrogated to themselves the power to monitor crude supply compliance from the NNPC to the Dangote Refinery.

Next in line was a team of media executives across print, electronic as well as online media professionals including bloggers and content creators. The facility also hosted interest groups from the Niger Delta under the banner of Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil & Gas. As these leading Nigerians visited the refinery to pay homage, the late playwright, Ola Rotimi’s adage that when the mother cow eats grass, her young ones watch her mouth, proved very accurate as a coalition of youths groups calling themselves the Lagos Advocacy Group, Lekki Empire Advocacy Forum, and Yoruba Youth Advocacy Forum, joined the Dangote admiration community.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, Yakubu Eleto, Convener of the Lagos Advocacy Group called on traditional rulers in the South-West to rally behind the Dangote Refinery because it is located in Yorubaland.

It is instructive to note that while the leadership of the National Assembly, the CSOs, the media and others are falling over one another to sing Dangote’s praise, those with a keen eye for business are taking a different view of things. This week, Fitch, the global rating agency downgraded the Dangote group, the Dangote Industries Limited, due to what it described as the “significant deterioration in the group’s liquidity position and uncertainty related to its ability to refinance maturing debt related to the syndicated loan raised to finance construction of Dangote Oil Refining Company (DORC).”

The agency said further delays by the Dangote group in meeting the funding requirements would significantly increase the likelihood of financial restructuring or default and lead to further rating downgrade.

Read what Fitch said: “The downgrade reflects significant deterioration in the group’s liquidity position following lower than expected disposal proceeds, operational and financial underperformance compared to our prior expectations, also affected by local currency devaluation, and lack of contracted backup funding to repay its significant debt facilities maturing on 31 August 2024.

“We view the lack of DIL’s audited accounts for 2023 as a corporate governance issue. The earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) contribution from DORC has (sic) been far below our previous projection.”

According to Fitch, “DIL has immediate debt servicing requirements related to the syndicated loan raised to finance the construction of Dangote Oil Refining Company (DORC).”

Dangote Refinery has a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) of refined oil products, which will be sold in both the Nigerian domestic and international markets. Reports indicate that during the First Half (1H) 2024 the refinery operated at around 50% capacity and produced between 325,000 bpd to 375,000 bpd.

Significantly, Fitch noted that the gloomy situation the Dangote group had found itself was pushing it to consider selling of 12.5 percent of its stake in the refinery. In 2021, NNPC Ltd acquired a 7.25 percent stake in the Dangote refinery’s project entity for $1.0 billion, with an option to purchase the remaining 12.75 percent stake by June 2024. “Since the option has not been exercised, the group plans to divest a 12.75% stake in DORC in 2024,” Fitch Ratings said.

It is remarkable to see that in one month, the Dangote Refinery had become a Mecca of sorts to top parliamentarians and society watchdogs like the media and CSOs, all of who by the nature of their functions are supposed to be impartial and objective with the protection of the common good as their top priority but who in reality had become blatantly partisan.

In their newfound love for Dangote, none of these individuals or groups addressed the critical issues of Dangote Refinery’s production of adulterated diesel or attempt by Dangote to entrench a monopoly by asking government to freeze out his competitors.

It is disappointing in particular that lawmakers who ought to exhibit impartiality and ensure that a level-play field is provided for all businesses, have so tactlessly taken sides in a matter without due investigation. That partisanship is deplorable and should have no place in a society as ours with its diversity and tendency for recourse to expression of primordial sentiments, which instigate and aggravate existing ethnic and religious fault-lines.

Granted that local businesses like Dangote Refinery, which are of strategic benefit to Nigerians, should be protected from being overrun by foreign business entities, it does not excuse it from complying with provisions of extant by laws regulating its operations. The allegations against Dangote Refinery are weighty and need to be thoroughly investigated. We do not need more dramas at this time.

Tobi Amusan Out, 4×400 Men Relay Team Disqualified – Nigeria’s Woes Continue At Paris 2024 Olympics

Tobi Amusan

By Akinwale Kasali

The hope of Team Nigeria ending the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a Medal seems to have been dashed, finally.

The country’s brightest hope of registering its name on the Medal Table, Hurdler,  Tobi Amusan has failed. She is missing on the line-up fie the 100 meters hurdle race.

She shockingly failed to make the cut.

Amusan finished third in the Heat One of the Semi Finals behind United States of America’s Grace Stark, and Bahamas’ Sprinter, Devynne Charlton.

The World Record holder, clocked 12.55 seconds to finish third after a poor start off the block in lane six of her heat.

She was a couple of meters behind her opponents by the first few hurdles.

She attempted a recovery in the latter stage of the race but had fallen too far behind and came third-place finish.

The upset came in the third and final heat.

Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent and Samba-Mayela Cyrena of France finished fourth and fifth in the heat with times of 12.44 seconds and 12.52 seconds each.

Also, Team Nigeria men’s 4×400 has been disqualified from the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The South Africa men’s 4x400m relay team has been included in the final by the referee.

Nigeria was disqualified for lane infringement.

Team Nigeria men’s 4×400 quartet of Emmanuel Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Dubem Amene, and Chidi Okezie finished 2nd in their semifinal heat.

They ran a season’s best of 2:59.81.

With this development, the possibility of getting any medal looks zero.

Three Nigerians made the finals of the Women Long Jump.  Sadly, the trio of Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro and Ochonogor finished Fifth, 10th and 12th respectively.

Nigeria us about to witness its poorest Olympics outing in recent history.
