By Ayodele Oni

As all hands are on the deck to reposition the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the coming General Elections, some members of the party have lost hope in the Party’s survival.

PDP is doing everything possible to have a good outing at the forthcoming Governorship Elections in Edo and Ondo states, going by the popularity of their candidates in the two States.

But, one of the Party’s chieftains, who at various times enjoyed patronage  and even got the Party’s ticket to contest in the 2023 Governorship Poll in Kogi State seems to see a different thing about the party.

Former Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, and Governorship candidate of the PDP in 2023 governorship election in Kogi state, Dino Melaye declared that “it’s over for the PDP.”

Melaye posted on his official x.com Page on Saturday, that it’s the end of the road for the PDP. He did not elaborate on what made him conclude that

Dino declared “End of the road for PDP” with the allegations that the Acting Chairman of the Party, Damaging Bature and Anyawu have “irredeemably destroyed the party and the “Party is now once upon a time.”

Reactions have been trailing the comment on the social media with some claiming that the X account was an illegal site while others blamed Melaye for being part of those that destroyed the PDP.

One commentator wrote “I have checked the X account where Dino was said to have made the pronouncement. And I found out that it is a fake account.

“So pls, everyone, ignore the information.

And by the way if the fabricated story was truly made by Dino, then, does that mean that it was said by everyone in PDP? No.

Dino is not the owner of the PDP.”

Emir’s Murder: MURIC Demands Explanation From Sokoto Government

Professor Ishaq Akintola - MURIC

By Akinwale Kasali

The Sokoto State Government has been silent over the murder of Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isah Bawa in the hands of bandits who had abducted him. It’s silence has attracted the attention of the Prof. Ishaq Akintola led –  Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC. MURIC has, therefore,  demandedan explanation from the Government of Sokoto State.

The Group Executive Director of the Islamic Human Rights Organization in a statement said, “The Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isah Bawa, was reportedly killed by bandits on Tuesday, 20th August, 2024 while still in captivity. The late Emir was seen in a viral video begging ‘Brothers and sisters, friends and the State government’ to help him pay the ransom of N1 billion demanded by his abductors.

“MURIC is bewildered by the sudden turn of events but we do not wish to be judgemental. We will rather demand an explanation for the tragic incident. Nigerians, particularly, the good people of Sokoto State, deserve to know the steps taken by the State Government from the day Emir Isah Bawa of Gobir was kidnapped.

“The death of Emir Bawa raises more questions than answers. We are talking of a whole Emir for crying out loud. He was in captivity for three long weeks

“Why did it take so long? What were the Security Agents in the zone doing? Who was assigned to coordinate the operation? Why was nothing done for a whole three weeks? What went wrong? How safe is the ordinary Sokoto citizen if a whole Emir can die in this manner? How safe are the Emirs of Damaturu, Argungu, etc.

“In fact, how safe is Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar? We are constrained to ask the Security Agencies in the geopolitical zone to up their game in the task of protecting the Sultan, in particular, and the remaining Traditional Rulers now that it is clear that the bandits have suddenly developed long throat. Doubling or quadrupling their guards will not be a bad idea.”

The Group appealed to the Federal Government, the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police to pay special attention to Sokoto State at this point in time. The handwriting on the wall appears to indicate a shift in the modus operandi of bandits in the State”, the statement reads.

Ajaka Says Supreme Court Judgement On Kogi Poll Unexpected, Wants IGP To Investigate Attack On Him, Supporters

Murtala Ajaka - Kogi SDP Guber Candidate

By Ayodele Oni

The Social Democratic Party, (SDP) Governorship Candidate for the November 11, 2023 election in Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka, has reacted to assault on him and his supporters in Abuja on Friday after the Supreme Court dismissed appeal filed over Kogi state governorship election results.

He appealed to the  Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and other relevant security agencies to investigate a brutal attack on him and his supporters.

Ajaka also rejected the judgement of the Supreme Court which dismissed his appeal on the Kogi governorship election result.

The incident occurred on Friday at the Supreme Court in Abuja, where Ajaka and his supporters were assaulted after  five justices panel dismissed his appeal challenging the election victory of Usman Ododo from the All Progressives Congress, citing lack of merit.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Ajaka  condemned the attack, describing it as “an assault on democracy itself.”

He added, “I urge the Inspector General of Police and relevant security agencies to investigate this matter thoroughly, ensuring that culprits are brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.

“In a democratic society, attacks on a governorship candidate, because he explored a legal means to reclaim his stolen mandate are inexcusable and will not be tolerated.”

Commenting on the Supreme Court’s ruling that confirmed Ododo as the winner of the gubernatorial election, Ajaka expressed respect for the court’s role in upholding the rule of law but rejected the judgment’s outcome.

“The world has witnessed the miscarriage of justice in our nation’s judiciary system, and we cannot help but feel a deep sense of disappointment and disillusionment.

“The judgement has left many questions unanswered and has further eroded the trust of the Nigerian people in the judiciary.

“We reject the outcome even though we have no other options available we will abide by the decision of the apex court.”

Bode George, A “Shame To Military”, His Remarks Smell Of Tribalism – Atiku

Bode George and Atiku Abubakar

By Ayodele Oni

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has fired back at Bode George, a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for claiming that Nigeria would have collapsed if he won the presidency in 2023, describing him as a “shame to the military.”

Atiku pointed out that George’s remarks amounted to tribalism and disservice to the military he had served.

In a statement on social media, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, described George’s comments as “imprudent talk” and highlighted the benefits of an Atiku presidency.

Ibe stated that Atiku’s leadership would have brought prosperity, merit-based appointments, and safeguarded Nigeria’s interests, unlike the current administration’s “bigotry and nepotism.”

Ibe also criticized George for his silence on the present administration’s performance, suggesting that his reticence might be due to Atiku’s non-southern origin.

“Contrary to Chief Bode George’s imprudent talk, an @atiku presidency would have heralded an era of prosperity, driven by a cabinet brimming with seasoned and adept individuals, chosen solely on merit regardless of their background or beliefs.

“Such leadership would have safeguarded Nigeria’s interests, steering clear of the bigotry and nepotism and brigandage that characterizes this administration.

“Instead of the current state of disarray, driven by haphazard policies, Nigeria would have thrived under Atiku’s guidance.

“In contrast, we see Bode George, who once threatened exile, should Tinubu ascend to power, now oddly silent about the present administration. Is Bode’s reticence because Atiku is not from his region? It is prudent to consider Bode’s opinions with caution.

“Furthermore, Bode’s conduct is a disservice to the military, an institution esteemed for its unity. Here is a Commodore who, paradoxically, embraces tribalism and undermines the very principles of the military. It is a source of shame for the armed forces to have such a figure in their ranks.”

State Of The Nation: “Atiku Would Not Have Done Better Than President Tinubu” – Bode George

Bode George and Atiku Abubakar

By Akinwale Kasali

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olabode George, has stated that if Atiku Abubakar had emerged as President, he would not have done better than President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku, was the PDP Presidential flag bearer in the 2023 election, but, George described  him not competent to rule Nigeria.

The former Nigeria Port Authority, NPA, Chairnan said Atiku’s emergence as President in 2023 would have spelt doom for the country and  created many problems  including unstable polity.

Speaking on Arise Television, George said the PDP is crisis-ridden today because of the choice of Atiku as its Presidential Candidate at a time the Party, also, had its Chairman (Iyorchia Ayu) from the North.

“By the time Ayu left, he should have left long before the election. There was an agreement. It was the emergence of Atiku from the North as a Presidential candidate that completely disorganised the norm of the party,” he said.

Continuing, George said: “The moment we interfered with it, manipulating the whole process to satisfy Atiku, that’s where the problem started. For us to pretend as if there was not a problem, we are just wasting time.

“Let us stand by the truth because it is only the truth that would liberate you. When we had that election, we divided the party (PDP) into two.”

He did not see Atiku succeeding as president under the circumstances.

His words: “If Atiku had won, I would have stayed in my house because I know for real that in future, he would collapse. This country would never accept.

“If he had won that election, you think this country would have been stable? Because somebody from the North had just finished eight years and our own norm is that after the eight years, the Presidential Candidate must come to the South. Those who are running around for appointments, we wish them best of luck.”

He said the PDP has no moral right to query the “nuisances and nuances going on in this country by the people in government.”

The PDP, according to him, “got some deeper problems”, with three factions battling for the soul of the party “and it’s not working.”

He declined his appointment as a member of the Disciplinary Committee set up to sanction members alleged to have worked against the party in the 2023 general elections.

He said he could not work under Chief Tom Ikimi who is the Chairman of the Committee.

His words: “I know Tom very well, he met me in this party. The founding fathers handed over to us. So the culture of the party, the do’s and don’ts are with us. So you don’t make me be a member under somebody that I know in terms of hierarchy of the party, I am senior, and say I should go and serve under him. I made that observation to them. And they said are you going to come?, I said no, I’m not.

“I will not serve under Ikimi. I’m being very frank with myself. How much information or depth does he have concerning our party? You don’t do things like that. It’s an observation and I’ve told the Chairman. At this age, I’m ready to stay home.

“Just setting up a Committee, where will it lead you?”

Recall, however, that Bode George had threatened to leave the country on self exile in Tinubu wins the 2023 Presidential Election. Tinubu won, and has been the President for one year and counting. But Bode George is, still, very much in Nigeria.

Unviable States, LGA’s, Should Be Scrapped Or Merged – Wogu, Aba Mayor

0
Chief Uche Wogu

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

With many Nigerians still basking in the euphoria heralded by the far reaching pronouncements by the Supreme Court on the independence of the third tier of Government, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Aba South Council of Abia State, Chief Uche Wogu, has insisted that Local Councils should not just be merely autonomous, but be demonstrably self-reliant and self-sustaining.

The Supreme Court had, on June 20, 2024, ruled to affirm the financial autonomy of Local Governments in the Country and further ordered that they be credited with their monthly accruals from the Federation Account directly.

But in an interview with The Source on Friday, August 23, Wogu who is also the Aba Zonal Coordinator of the Abia state Harmonized Taskforce, said States and Local Governments which  are not viable should be scrapped and merged to ensure sustainability.

“I have been a strong advocate for the merging of unviable states and Local Governments to make for self reliance and sustenance.

“States should not be solely dependent on monthly hand outs from the centre. The practice, has engendered laziness in the system.

“Instead of being innovative and creative, Local Councils and States now sit back and wait for Federal allocations.

“I recall that in the second republic, the then Governor of old Imo State, late Chief Sam Mbakwe on some occasions came to borrow money from the Aba province.

“It is good that the Supreme Court has now clearly defined the autonomous status of Local Governments. But we have to go further to affirm the situation by putting in place the needed structural  foundations that will truly promote the financial autonomy to a self reliant and sustaining level”, Chief Wogu stated.

According to him, Local Government should not be confined to the anachronistic idea of merely chasing people about to collect taxes and rents, and there after grade some roads, and be satisfied .

” Local Governments should be innovative, and intentional in creating an enabling environment for business activities to thrive, and for sustainable revenue generation..

” Our intention in Aba South is to create the right atmosphere for economic growth, encourage the existing industrial clusters, and  SMEs ,as well as exportations.

There are many things we can produce and export from Aba and environs ,to bolster the revenue profile .Not chasing people around in the name of collecting taxes and rents.

That is not my idea of local Government administration. The idea is that Local councils should not just be autonomous, but manifestly impactful to the the lives of the people.” Mayor Wogu. noted

Further speaking, he informed that the target is for the Aba South Council to rake in about N500 million quarterly from business activities .

” Our intention is to run the system without  recourse and or over dependence on the so-called Federal allocations .

Here, we have the potentials to be one of the most viable local councils in the country. Aba South is at the heart of Aba famed business status.

There is no reason for it to be waiting for stipends from the Federation account, when there are countless opportunities to be self reliant and sustaining” he said

Chief Wogu asserted that part of the problems besetting the system is the idea of perceiving public resources as instruments for political settlement and patronage .

“We have made  it clear that ,there will be no room for the sharing of money to people. My boss ,Governor Alex Otti, is the promoter of that philosophy.

Part of the serious challenges, the system is facing is how to re orientate  the people. In the past ,people just stay in their houses and wait for bank alerts from the Government, without doing any jobs

The Governor, from the state level and we at the  other end are saying no…It can not be business as usual .You can’t be using the commonwealth to service a few privileged people.

So we have made it clear that ,the people’s money will be use to provide infrastructural facilities and other variables that will be beneficial to the majority of the people.

The ideal situation is for an enabling environment to be created, with people able to earn a decent living. Although, some  people are resisting the change in philosophy, but we are not deterred .

Even the workforce ,the emphasis is how to create a conducive atmosphere for them to acquire useful skills that will serve them even in retirement.” Wogu stated.

Why Governor Ododo Was In Taraba With PDP Governors – Kogi Government

By Ayodele Oni

Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo has explained why Governor Usman Ododo was spotted with opposition governors.

In a post via X, Fanwo said Governor Ododo was in Taraba to attend the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Governor Kefas

The appearance of Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State with 11 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set tongues wagging.

In a picture, which is trending online, Ododo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor, was seen dressed in the same attire with his counterparts in the opposition party.

Among the PDP governors spotted with Ododo were Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

The fact that the picture was taken in Taraba State where PDP governors met and issued a communique on the crisis rocking their party fueled speculations on the involvement of Ododo with his counterparts at this point in time.

Some social media users even concluded that Ododo, who just won his gubernatorial dispute case at the Supreme Court, was planning to defect to the PDP.

But Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, explained why Ododo was spotted with opposition governors.

In a post via X, Fanwo said Governor Ododo was in Taraba to attend the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Governor Kefas.

He wrote: “The Chief Servant of Kogi State, His Excellency Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo jet out hours after his Supreme Court victory to attend the wedding of the daughter of the Taraba State Governor, His Excellency Agbu Kefas in Taraba.

Endorsement Of Gov Oyebanji For Second Term: Fayose Exercising Own Right – Ekiti PDP Secretary

0
Biodun Oyebanji

By Ayodele Oni

The Ekiti Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has dismissed former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s endorsement of Governor Biodun Oyebanji as inconsequential and worthless.

PDP Secretary, Funmi Oguns stated that the party remains untroubled by this endorsement and is determined to defeat Oyebanji in the 2026 Governorship election.

Former Governor Fayose who won election twice on the ticket of the  PDP, had in several fora openly endorsed incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji for second term of office.

He had said that as a sitting governor, Oyebanji has visited him at his Lagos home more than 14 times, a feat which no other governor has achieved.

But, Oguns, who is nursing a Governorship ambition, and a former Commissioner under Fayose, asserted that the outcome of the election would surprise Fayose and his supporters, noting that Ekiti residents are in a challenging situation and are seeking solutions through effective leadership, which the PDP is ready to provide.

She emphasized that the 2026 election will serve as a time for voters to closely examine Oyebanji’s governance, especially in light of the substantial revenue Ekiti State has received from the federation account.

The former Commissioner said: “The best way to get our democracy right is for us to allow all our people to demonstrate their democratic rights.

“So, former Governor Ayodele Fayose as a leader is free to display his fundamental right and support for whoever he likes, but this won’t change what Ekiti people were determined to do.

“In the last one year, Ekiti state had been consistently receiving an average of  N6.5bn monthly from the Federation Account. The wage bill stands at N2.3 billion. Where has the rest of the money gone?

“But by my own opinion, he is free to exercise his fundamental right to support whoever he likes. He remains my boss and someone I respect very much. I will never cast aspersion on him as my leader.”

Supreme Court Verdicts: PDP Kicks, Demands Electoral Reforms

0
Supreme Court of Nigeria

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP has condemned the decision of the Supreme Court to validate the outcomes of the two off- season gubernatorial elections in Kogi and Imo States held in 2023.

The All Progressive Congress, APC, won the two elections.

The Apex Court in in two separate judgements delivered on Friday, August 23, 2024, affirmed the results of the elections as earlier announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC. It also affirmed the election of the PDP Governor of Bayelsa State.

But in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagbo, the PDP expressed dismay that the  Supreme Court  could affirm the outcomes of the elections, despite overwhelming evidence that they were mired by malpractices and manipulations

Besides, the PDP said that the two elections, were also characterized by high incidents of violence, over voting and manipulations by the ruling APC.

In the perpetration of the alleged electoral heists, some INEC officials, according to the PDP, made themselves willing tools.

The PDP is of the view that the alleged air of disappointment and disillusion which pervaded the two states on Friday, were clear testimonies that the majority of the people were not happy with the court’s rulings.

The Party further noted that the upholding of  the Governorship elections in Imo and Kogi states underscores a stark challenge created by the operation and violation of the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act and Electoral Guidelines of the INEC.

“The general melancholic disposition in Imo and Kogi States at the news of the judgments validated the concerns and views of our party and majority of Nigerians that the results of the elections declared in the two states did not reflect the true aspirations of the people as expressed in their votes.

“The Judgement also underlines the clamour and demand by our Party and Nigerians for a comprehensive review of the Electoral Law, particularly with respect to the declaration of results of elections without due regard to issues and complaints arising from obvious violation of the provisions of the law and electoral processes.

“This, again, highlights the need to strengthen the electoral law and processes to ensure that elections are determined by votes cast, and not by violence and manipulations as were prevalent in the Imo and Kogi states governorship elections.” the PDP noted

The PDP has, therefore, demanded that, in future, candidates should not be declared winners, until all processes, including legal options are concluded.

However, the party noted that despite the obvious flaws inherent the  verdicts, as a law abiding entity,  it has accepted the Supreme court judgments.

The Source reports that in Imo State, the apex Court, while dismissing the two separate appeals filed by Senators Athan Achonu and Samuel Anyanwu of the Labour Party and PDP, respectively as lacking in merit, had  also resolved all issues raised in favour of Governor Hope Uzodima of the APC.

Similarly ,the Supreme Court, in validating the election  of Governor Usman Ododo, dismissed petitions filed by the PDP and Social Democratic party SDP candidates.

Instructively, the PDD did not condemn the outcome of the Supreme Court verdict where the election of PDP’s Governor Diri Douye was upheld.

Monarch’s Murder: Sokoto Govt Still Mum, As Police Arrests Protesters

District Head of Gatawa in Sokoto State - Alhaji Isah Muhammad

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed that it has rounded up some individuals suspected to be involved in the violent protest that trailed the abduction and subsequent death of the District Head of Gatawa in Sabon Birnin Local council of the State.

The Source reports that a spate of violent protests greeted the announcement of the murder of Alhaji Isah Muhammed, the District Head, in the kidnapers den on Wednesday August 21.

The Traditional Ruler was in July, abducted alongside his son Kabiru Isah, by some suspected bandits on their way to Gatawa from Sokoto town.

But while his son bought his freedom with a whopping sum of N60 million, the heavy ransom placed on his father’s could not be  met before he was killed by his kidnapers.

The subsequent protest by angry youths of the domain led to the destruction of many public properties, including the All Progressive Congress APC Sabon Birnin Local Government Headquarters.

A dusk to dawn curfew was on Thursday, August 22, imposed by the Sokoto State Government to contain the situation.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 24, by the Deputy Spokesperson for the Command, Mohammed Isah,  ASP, the police  warned that it will not sit idly and watch some hoodlums disrupt the peace of the state under any guise.

According to the statement, the protesters set ablaze a 25 unit Housing Estate sited in the area for the purpose of accommodating  Government officials posted to the Local Council for service .

He insisted that the police authorities in the State are ever ready to visit the full weight of the law on persons or groups found to be culpable in the violent protest.

He stated that the State Police Command will carry out a comprehensive investigation to fish out those behind the destruction of public properties in the area.

The Police anti-riot squad, according to the statement, has been deployed to the troubled area to maintain peace and order.

The police spokesman urged law abiding residents of the area to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation or intimidation.

Curiously, as at the time of reporting, the Sokoto State Government was yet to react, officially, to the fate that befell   the District Head .

Barau Isah, son of the late Monarch  has  been pointing accusing fingers at a member of the State Legislative Body for his father’s abduction.

Despite wide spread indignation and condemnation provoked by the gruesome murder of the Royal Father, not a few are  surprised that the State Government is  yet to respond, beyond the imposition of curfew in the affected area.
