AMCON

The managing director/chief executive of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON Gbenga Alade has disclosed that efforts are underway to recover close to N5 trillion outstanding debt from recalcitrant debtors.

The debt will be recovered from the assets hidden abroad by the debtors including those secretly kept under the Special Purpose Vehicles, SPV.

The debts recovery drive spans all the sector of the economy, AMCON said yesterday, adding that the agency is poised to “resolving non-performing loans” in the banking and financial sector of the economy for the purpose of stabilising the sector.

The AMCON chief executive made the remark while speaking with journalists in Lagos, on Monday.

According to him, the agency has received support from the federal government in its quests to recover debts transferred by banks to AMCON during the different phases of Eligible Bank Asset, EBA acquisition.

He explained that so far the organisation has received the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Assembly, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in the ongoing efforts to recover debts from recalcitrant debtors, noting that debtors who refused to pay will be named and shamed soon.

Alade, stated that since the new management took over about five months ago, they have successfully collected approximately N100 billion from several high-profile debtors and revised the sale of some assets.

He emphasised that the organisation has been receiving support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Central Bank Governor, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the National Assembly in their efforts to recover debts transferred by banks to AMCON during the different phases of Eligible Bank Asset (EBA) acquisition.

Furthermore, the CEO mentioned that the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance has pledged to name and shame obligors who have yet to repay their debts at a major stakeholders’ conference that would hold before the end of the year.

He revealed plans to organise a conference where senior officials from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), relevant ministries, banks, and the judiciary would be invited to discuss the challenges posed by non-performing loans in the country.

Alade, highlighted four key sectors that the new management has chosen to focus on.

They included oil and gas, power, telecommunications, and aviation.

He expressed confidence that resolving issues surrounding assets in the oil and gas sector would boost production, generate more foreign exchange, and create employment opportunities for citizens. The CEO noted that they have achieved remarkable results in two of these assets in less than five months.

“By engaging international asset tracers and focusing on key sectors, AMCON aims to recover outstanding debts and contribute to the overall economic growth and development of the country,” he said.

32 Medical Doctors In Kidnappers Den- NARD

Kidnapped Dr Ganiyat Popoola

32 medical doctors are currently in the captivity of kidnappers, the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has revealed.

Doctor Abah Innocent, Chairman, Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, UATH, made this known on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television.

Abah said there’s no information on what has happened to the kidnapped doctors, whether they are dead or alive, saying the hope of re-uniting them with their families is becoming dimmer everyday.

He said “posterity will not be fair” to medical doctors if they failed to take any action to ensure their release, saying medical doctors have been targeted by kidnappers across the country for ransome.

For instance, bandits who kidnapped Dr Popoola are demanding N40 million ransombefore she can be set free.

Abah’s remark comes on the heels of a seven-day warning strike declared by NARD in view of the abduction of one of their colleagues, Dr Kudirat Popoola who has been in the den of her abductors for eight months.

NARD had had last week embarked on a nationwide protests to press home their demand for Dr Popoola to be released.

Dr Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna State, was abducted alongside her husband on December 27, 2023.

While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in the custody of the kidnappers, a situation that has sparked widespread concern and outrage within the health sector in the country.

On Monday 26, 2024, the angry medical doctors put the federal government on notice of an indefinite strike if Dr Popoola is not released withing seven days.

Declaring the seven -day strike on August 25, NARD President Dr Dele Abdullahi said the strike will be total, with no emergency care services available for one week.

He said doctors could no longer stand by idly while one of  our own “remains in danger”.

“The continuous captivity of Dr Popoola is unacceptable, and we can no longer stand by idly while one of our own remains in danger,” Dr Abdullahi stated.

Meanwhile, checks by the magazine indicate that the strike action has severely impacted healthcare services nationwide, as many Nigerians who need urgent medical care groan under the abandonment of the doctors.

Zamfara: APC Accuses Gov Lawal Of Awarding N38 Billion Fertilizer Contract To Himself, Invites EFCC

0
Dauda Lawal - Zamfra State Governor

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Zamfara State All Progressive Congress, APC, has accused the State Governor, Dauda Lawal, of awarding to himself a whopping N38 billion fertilizer supply contract.

The Party also alleged that the contract, which was awarded to Zam-Agro Chemicals, an outfit in which the Governor owns a major stake, was highly inflated .

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris Gusau, the APC expressed outrage over the spending of over N38 billion by the Zamfara State Government to procure 75 trucks of fertilizer.

According to the APC, going by the contract sum, the fertilizer was purchased at the staggering sum of N855 per bag, representing a whopping differential with  the market value of the products.

The Party insisted that the highly inflated supply contract was awarded to benefit Governor Lawal and other top Government functionaries in the State.

The Party, also, noted that this is not the first time the contracting firm is associated with high wired fleecing of the State through highly inflated contract.

According to the statement, Zam-Agro Chemicals had similarly, in 2022, refused to supply the essential farming input to the State, after fully collecting the contract sum.

The APC said that it is all the more worried about the conflicting signals emanating from Government circles on the actual quantity of the products ordered for.

According to Idris Gusau, while Governor Lawal announced the purchase of 135 trucks of fertilizer, the PDP leadership has insisted that 145 trucks were ordered.

The cacophonic tones, the party maintained, is disturbing and  raises serious doubt concerning the level of sincerity surrounding the entire transaction.

“We calculated that at N38.5 billion the Government purchased the fertilizer at an astonishing N855 per bag.

“This is a clear case of contract inflation. Even if we use the figures provided by the PDP, it would still result in an outrageous price per bag” the party insisted.

However, the APC stated that it is not at all surprised at the antics of the PDP-led State Government which it accused of trying to appropriate the credit for the Federal Government’s. earlier intervention .

According to the party’s statement, the Federal Government had initially provided 70 trucks of the products to the state.

But for the timely intervention of the APC, the PDP-led administration had wanted to join the Federal Government efforts with the 75 trucks it ordered.

The party has, therefore, called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, and other relevant authorities to institute a probe into the fertilizer supply contract awarded by the state Government .

This is even as it has demanded that  all established inflated sum of the contract be refunded.

By Ayodele Oni

As Enugu state Government moves to clear backlog of salaries and pensions inherited from previous administration, it has uncovered nothing less than 2,640 ghost and deceased pensioners on its payroll.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia who disclosed this, said the administration was making effort to reform pension payment in the state.

He said; “Recall that the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, had earlier promised that his administration was poised to eradicate poverty in the state by clearing the inherited backlog of pensions and other liabilities, and also keep up with its current fiscal responsibility to the citizens, among other measures.

“This will improve our people’s standard of living, raise purchasing power and promote strong and sustainable economic growth in the state.

“A total of 7109 local government pensioners received monthly payments of close to half a billion naira in July, including 989 newly captured entrants who retired between April 2022 and April 2024 but were not accommodated in the pension scheme.

“The record provided by the Local Government Pensions Board indicate that the state has been paying over 8,760 local government retirees as of April 2024, against the 7109 verified pensioners.

“The payment mode adopted by the state will guarantee that backlogs are phased out within the timeline set out by the government.

“This administration will continue to support our citizens, particularly our senior citizens, who dedicated their time and energy serving the state.

“We will soon phase out all arrears inherited by the administration. We are reforming the pensions system through strong institutional policies that would make it difficult for corrupt elements to find their way into the scheme.

“We have been able to digitalize the institution with measures that would make every transaction and payment transparent, accountable and traceable.”
