LEADERSHIP: A Story Still Telling 20 Years After

Several good things happen in the bedroom, often the place of rest and renewal. Sometime in 2004, Sam Nda-Isaiah and his wife Zainab conceived the idea of a newspaper there.

She told the story before of how her husband got up in the wee hours, scribbled a few things in a jotter, and asked what she thought of the names and the sketch. That was not the day the newspaper started, of course. But it was only a matter of time.

That idea, which later became LEADERSHIP, has evolved from the feisty flimsy of decades ago into a news content company with a stable comprising some of Nigeria’s most fearless and authoritative news brands. Let’s walk back through the years that fostered this growth.

The pharma’s lab

Sam, as the founder was fondly called, was a journalist who happened to be a pharmacist. His father, Clement, was one of Northern Nigeria’s most durable newspaper deskmen with a strong interest in sports. He worked in New Nigerian Kaduna, but his influence and reputation went far and wide.

His son, Sam, branched off into journalism after studying Pharmacy at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ife and working briefly at Pfizer. The transition might have been a vocational accident. I think, more appropriately, it was a triumph of the genes. He first joined Daily Trust, then in its infancy, as one of the newspaper’s columnists.

After years of column-writing, he compiled his selected works into a book, Nigeria: Full Disclosure, before launching a newspaper. It took a lot of work, though. Before the newspaper, he started a newsletter, LEADERSHIP Confidential, a highly-prized window on life, politics and powerplay among Abuja’s high and mighty, patronised by embassies and the political glitterati.

Confidential mafia

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Malam Abba Kyari, Adamu Adamu, Mamman Daura, Abba Mahmood, and Adamu Suleiman, people who knew the dark secrets of government, were among the most valuable anonymous contributors. But the newsletter wasn’t enough for Sam, the man of big ideas. He wanted to do more.

He gathered the money from the launch of Full Disclosure, which was about N20m then. With a small team comprising Nnamdi Samuel, Abraham Nda-Isaiah, Uche Ezechukwu, DemolaAbimboye, Winifred Ogbebo, Douglas Ejembi, Audee Giwa, Kingsley Chukwu, among his earliest staff, he released a preview towards the end of September 2004, before the maiden edition on October 4, dedicated to God and country.

God and newspapers

I’m not sure God reads newspapers. But countries pay attention. A few notable newspapers have significantly affected the course of their countries for ill or for good. When Rudolph Hearst started the New York Journal, his motive was clear: how to run Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World out of town.

That rivalry inflamed one of the most hysterical eras in American journalism, including Hearst’s use of his press to instigate deadly conflicts with Spain.

However, the US press also had its unlikely heroes, one of the most remarkable being Katherine Graham, daughter of the founder of The Washington Post.

Whatever Jeff Bezos may have unmade of the brand today, ThePost, on Katherine Graham’s watch, was the newspaper that defied the US government to publish the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate story, two of the most consequential scoops of the 21st century.

Loaded gun

I’m not saying LEADERSHIP is The Post. Not yet. I’m saying that newspapers can affect their countries’ trajectory one way or the other. Lord Beaverbrook eloquently said, “[Press power] is a flaming sword, which will cut through any political armour…that is not to say that any great newspaper or group of newspapers can enforce policies or make or unmake governments at will, just because it is a great newspaper.

“Many such newspapers are harmless because they do not know how or when to strike. They are in themselves unloaded guns. But teach the man behind them how to load and what to shoot at; they become deadly.”

The youngest and longest-serving Former British Labour Party Prime Minister, Tony Blair, knew this. For most of his years in Number 10, whenever the media mogul Rupert Murdoch called once, Blair answered twice.

But again, LEADERSHIP is not SUN or Times of London. Nor is Olusegun Obasanjo, Blair. Yet, Nigeria’s President Obasanjo would not forget LEADERSHIP in a hurry. In Too Good to Die: Third Term and the Myth of the Indispensable Man, the epic catalogue by Chidi Odinkalu and Aisha Osori, we read about the daring ambition of the former president to wrest an illegal third term.

Beacon, always

Even in its infancy, LEADERSHIP was perhaps the most consequential newspaper that frustrated Obasanjo’s ambition. It has remained just as much a scourge of crooked leaders as a champion of Nigeria’s unity.

For example, Imam Abubakar Abdullahi came to the limelight after the company’s awards and conference subsidiary recognised the cleric for sheltering Christians in his mosque at the height of the deadly sectarian violence of 2018 in Jos.

Again, this year, Auwalu Salisu, a Kano-based tricycle rider awarded by the newspaper for returning N15m to the owner, received an avalanche of praise, including a cash award of N250m by the Niger State government, which Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has redeemed and kept in the care of the Sam Nda-Isaiah Foundation.

The newspaper remains fervent in its fight for press freedom, regardless of which Witchfinder General wants to undermine the press. Its dogged pursuit of the “unidentified” persons who murdered Nigerian journalist James BagaudaKaltho in 1996, for example, led it through a labyrinth of minefields from Durbar Hotel, Kaduna, where he was bombed, through the trail of one Russell Hanks believed to have been a US envoy in Nigeria, and back to the US Embassy. The murder is still unresolved.

Neighbour-to-neighbour

There is another moment that bears retelling. In the heady days after the 2015 general elections, when the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, GodsdayOrubebe, besieged INEC Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega and threatened hell as the final results were being announced, the rogue economic wing of the PDP under the auspices of Neighbour-to-Neighbour, offered publishers vast sums of money to publish an advert that President Goodluck Jonathan had won the election.

An unsuspecting LEADERSHIP staff collected the money and gleefully called the publisher to inform him that the newspaper’s bread had been buttered. Sam, whose fury, even at the best of times, was like a raging storm, was on another level of fury. He ordered that the bag of cash be returned immediately. Not long after the money was returned, Muhammadu Buhari was announced the winner, and Jonathan conceded defeat within the hour.

Ghana-Must-Go!

In these 20 eventful years, LEADERSHIP readers have had an unfailing companion – Ghana-Must-Go, the irreverent cartoon strip on the back page. In my time here, I can only remember once when GMG was stricken and bereft of wit: December 11, 2020, when Sam passed. The cartoon character was, understandably, devastated: Its life, the life of the newspaper and many who depended on it, was suddenly hanging by a thread!

The last twenty years have been quite an odyssey, with the fast-changing media ecosystem, the increasing adoption of generative Artificial Intelligence, Big Tech’s abuse and misuse of content, rising costs, and changing audience demographics forcing the industry to recalibrate.

Overall, though, the journey that started in the bedroom over twenty years ago has made significant strides for God and country!

And long may it live!

“You Are Disgrace To Yoruba Nation” – AOKOYA Tells Senator Bamidele

0
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele

By Akinwale Kasali

Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate Leader, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District has come under strong criticism from Pan Yoruba Group,  Apapo Oodua Koya, AOKOYA. It has labeled the Senator a disgrace to Yoruba Nation.

The Group said that since Bamidele was voted into the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, he has never promoted the interest of the Yoruba People.

In a statement released on Thursday by Apapo Oodua Koya, AOKOYA, signed by Ahmed Korede, Publicity Secretary, the Group said Senator Bamidele has not only betrayed his constituency but, like many of his counterparts, betrayed the Yoruba Nation.

AOKOYA said since 1999, Bamidele has done nothing to promote Yoruba interest even though he rode on the crest of Yoruba agitation to climb the political ladder since 1999.

The statement reads, “His office located at Mushin was one of the places used by many Yoruba self determination groups, including the O’odua Peoples Congress, OPC, to hold meetings in the 1990s. He was a former President of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and a sympathiser of the Campaign for Democracy, AD. All these traditions, this history, Bamidele has shamelessly betrayed in deed, in speech and in action”, Korede stated on behalf of the Pan Yoruba coalition.

AOKOYA, a coalition of several Pan Yoruba groups stated that inspite of the armed attacks on Yoruba people since 2011, not for once has Bamidele made a comment to defend the Yoruba Race.

It added that Bamidele so neglected his People to the extent that even when four Yoruba traditional rulers were gunned down by armed bandits, and  hundreds of Yoruba people killed in the North East by Fulani armed men in the North West, he did nothing.

AOKOYA described Bamidele as ‘extremely opportunistic, cunning, deceitful, unreliable and above all distrustful.’

The group added that the Ekiti born Senator is an outstanding enemy of restructuring in Nigeria, and a saboteur of freedom for ethnic minorities.

“These traits he has consistently demonstrated in his political career since 1999. That was why he jumped from one party to the other, back and forth, driven by desperation and personal ego”.

The Group.also, alleged that the Senator is known for not picking calls when it has to do with Yoruba issues.

It said that when he gives you his number, he might give you up to 10 numbers showing his deceitful  character.

AOKOYA described Bamidele’s response to allegations that he opposed regional government as ‘weightless and meaningless.’

The group said all his actions since 1999 put him in the class of the worst political class in Yoruba history, someone who disdains his own people but promotes false impression about his vain glory through offering crumbs to his army of ignorant poor made to promote his  image.

“In his characteristic manner, he was evasive on what he said and did not say on regionalism. He has found it difficult to stand on any Yoruba issue. He said he did not speak on Yoruba regionalism but at the same time he has refused to make his stand known on the debate regarding regionalism, being the minimum request of the Yoruba people”, the group stated.

It also alleged that at critical moments in Yoruba history, Bamidele has been a traitor, a conscious one and agent provocateur in the midst of the long suffering Yoruba people.

AOKOYA: ‘We assure you, Bamidele that at the fullness of time, you will not have a dignified place in Yorubaland. You are a big disgrace to the Yoruba people, a threat to the collective aspiration of Yoruba people. Today, you are a ‘hero’ as defined by the rogue Nigerian state that feeds on the blood of mankind. You are a rich man that has made his money from the misery, pain and anguish of the multitude. You are comfortable, at the discomfort of the multitude. This is the tradition in every society ruled by tyranny and vicious leaders, but the fact is that your status is temporary and will inevitably be crushed and swept away by the whirlwind of revolution that is inevitable in Nigeria and in Yorubaland.

“The sky and the moon, the stars, the comets and the scurrying cloud will sing the praises of the new Yoruba nation that will emerge from the ruins of the present to the glory of God, the creator of heaven and earth.

“At that moment of history, you will be a pauper, at the mercy of those who have spent the greater part of your life to oppress, intimidate and impoverish”, the statement reads.

AOKOYA however urged the Yoruba people to be patient and resilience in the face of provocation and onslaught of policies since 1960 that have reduced Yoruba people to beggars and scavengers in their motherland and even across the world.

“We are a great and decent people, a people with glorious past and future that have been chained with the fetters of iron by greedy criminals that dominate the economic and political spaces. We Yoruba should take solace in historical truth in the words of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo that sunrise is bound to succeed nightfall and every darkness will inevitably be defeated by the glow of light”.

Kano Emirship: Confusion As NSA Addresses Bayero As Emir Of Kano

0
Ado Bayero

By Gideon Njoku

Inside him, the Kano State Government-deposed 15th Emir of Kano must be celebrating. He was, on Thursday, October 3, 2024, referred to as the Emir of Kano by no less a person than the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu.

The dethroned Emir has been in a tussle for the revered ancient throne with the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Lamido Sanusi Lamido, the 14th Emir of Kano who was deposed by the immediate past Kano State Government headed by Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, now the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in 2020. He was first appointed the Emir in 2021.

Ganduje, just before he deposed Sanusi, created three more Emirates from the Ancient Kano Emirate and appointed three new Emirs while Sanusi remained the Emir of a much diminished Kano Emirate.

Nuhu Ribadu - NSA
National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu.

But on 9th March, 2020, Ganduje deposed Sanusi, sent him on exile to a remote area of Nasarawa State, and appointed Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano. It took a Court ruling for Sanusi to be freed from the demeaning Nasarawa environment.

But with the defeat of the APC by the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Governor Idris woke up one morning and, apparently, in connivance with the  House of Assembly, repealed the law which created three other Emirates out of the old Kano Emirate, sacked the Emirs, including Bayero, and reinstated Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano on 23rd May, 2024.

Since then, Kano has not been the same. The ancient City has two Emirs – Sanusi, Government recognised, and Bayero waiting for his fate to be decided by the Courts. Both are operating from different Palaces  – Sanusi occupying the main Palace, and Bayero, a mini Palace in the Nasarawa quarters of the City.

Bayero was out of the State when Sanusi moved into Kano and the Palace. The expectation was that he would stay put where he was, but no. He flew back to Kano, accompanied by quite a number of security personnel, and drove straight to the mini Palace where he holds Court.

Worried by his presence in Kano, the Governor ordered him to live Kano. But Bayero ignored the order, and more security personnel were sent to him. While not a few people are waiting with bated breath for the final decision by the Courts, Bayero had a  breather from no less a person than

Ribadu.

At an event in Abuja on Thursday, the NSA  acknowledged the presence of Bayero, and referred to him as the Emir of Kano.

This happened at the 1st Annual International Lecture with the theme: “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024), organised by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

According to  reports, NSA Ribadu, while recognizing dignitaries present at the occasion,  acknowledged Bayero thus: “Of course, the Emir of Kano.” The ovation which greeted the acknowledgement showed it was well received.

The Kano State Government had, at the beginning of the crisis, alleged that Ribadu was behind Bayero. The Government later apologized to the NSA for the mis-speak.

He described the new minimum wage as proper and appropriate hence his government is committed to its implementation.

He further noted that the current cost of living and situation of things globally, necessitate the need to create better incentives for the working community.

Apart from using the minimum wage to stimulate the economy, the Governor emphasised that the Federal Government also considered cushioning the effects of the hardship the workers are facing to approve the new national minimum wage.

While promising to start the payment soon, the Governor urged the workers in Imo State to “show more commitment and be more productive.”

The Governor said that since the new minimum wage figure of N70,000 is already known to everyone, “what is needed is to work out the modalities on the consequential adjustments to trickle it down to the senior staff cadre because it is not for the junior workers alone, and by so doing the incentives, no matter the ration, will go round.”

Governor Uzodimma said but for the challenge of limited resources at the disposal of government, he was committed to immediate minimum wage implementation, but promised that “between now and the next two months,” everything will be sorted out.

“As government is determined to pay more, there is need for better and quality services to the people of Imo State,” Governor Uzodimma added and called on the workers  to “join hands to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people of the State.”

Reacting to the Governor’s assurance and the meeting with him, the Chairman of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Imo State Chapter, Comrade Uche Chigaemezue Nwigwe said that Governor Uzodimma has remained “workers-friendly and has shown willingness to implement the National Minimum wage for Imo workers.”

Nwigwe who assured that they will fast track discussions in one or two additional meetings of their committee on the implementation, promised that as soon as that is done “Imo workers will get what is due to them.”

Wike’s PDP, APC In Last Minute Protest March To Halt Rivers Council Election

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst the Rivers State Government’s insistence on going ahead with the local council polls billed for Saturday October 5, 2024, the All Progressive Congress APC on Thursday, October 3, joined forces with its otherwise bitter rival the Peoples Democratic Party PDP to protest against the move.

Siminalayi Fubara
Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Despite encumbrances, including legal rulings, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a state-wide broadcast Wednesday, October 2, said there is no going back on the conduct of the election.

He noted that the exercise is in keeping with the demands of the Supreme Court judgement reaffirming the autonomy of the third tier of Government.

The Governor stated that having observed all the prerequisite conditions and extant laws precedent to the election, the State Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC is rearing to go ahead with the exercise despite the antics of some forces .

According to him, failure to conduct the polls will place the fate of the State 23 Local Governments in jeopardy in the face of the October 31, 2024 dateline for the enforcement of the June 20 rulings of the country’s apex court on local council autonomy.

To ensure a hitch free exercise, and also for people to meaningfully participate, he declared Thursday and Friday October 3 and 4 as work free days.

He called on workers to use the opportunity to travel to their various  places of registration to observe their civic responsibility.

Earlier, the RSIEC had insisted that the Abuja Court order on Tuesday barring the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC from availing it of the national voters register will not have any effect, as the document had long been obtained before the court order.

Besides, a Rivers State High court sitting in PortHarcout the capital had on Monday, ruled to mandate the RSIEC and the State Government to hold the polls using the INEC voters register.

The Rivers High Court 14 had also directed the security agencies to provide all the needed security for the exercise .

Protesters drawn from the two hitherto bitter rivals as early as 8.00 am  began to amass at the PDP state secretariat close to the Leventist Junction.

Before their decision to hit the street, Leaders of the two parties in the State, Tony Okocha and Chukwuemeka Aaron of the APC and PDP respectively, had separately, at different fora, condemned the planned local council election.

They had insisted that the processes of the polls do no not conform with laid down rules and such, unacceptable to them as parties and stakeholders.

Under heavy security guide, the protesting parties are calling for a halt of the process pending when a level playing ground for all is assured by the RSIEC

Not a few are perceiving the protest as a last minute  desperate effort by the embattled Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to avoid the political bruises the successful conduct of the Local Council polls will inflict on his  ego.
