Nigeria’s Federal High Court: A scandalized Court

On 7 June 1911, the High Court of Australia decided a very interesting case. It arose from a publication issued two months earlier, on 7 April 1911, by a newspaper called The Mercury, published from Hobart, in Tasmania. Under the title “A Modest Judge”, the newspaper took aim at Mr. Justice Higgins, a senior judge of the High Court of Australia who was also the first President of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration.

According to the records, in a case presided over by Justice Higgins in the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration, a lawyer, Mr. Starke, accused a labour union of impunity, alleging that “they are encouraged…. by the Government of this country.”

On hearing this, Justice Higgins prohibited the lawyer from uttering such words. When counsel protested his right to vigorously advance the case of his client, the judge retorted “[Y]ou are not entitled to speak disrespectfully of those above us.”

Here was the jurisprudence of Kabiyesi articulated with forceful clarity more than three quarters of a century before it arrived in Ligali Ayorinde’s High Court of Lagos in 1989.

This was the factual background to the article that was to become the centrepiece of the proceedings in the High Court of Australia in which the newspaper said of Mr. Justice Higgins that  he was “we believe, what is called a political Judge, that is, he was appointed because he had well served a political party. He, moreover, seems to know his position, and does not mean to allow any reflections on those to whom he may be said to be indebted for his judgeship.”

The Attorney-General of Australia charged the newspaper with the crime of “scandalizing the judiciary.” Dismissing the charge, Samuel Walker Griffith, Australia’s inaugural Chief Justice, who presided over the proceedings had this to say:

“I am not prepared to accede to the proposition that an imputation of want of impartiality to a Judge is necessarily a contempt of Court. On the contrary, I think that, if any Judge of this Court or of any other Court were to make a public utterance of such character as to be likely to impair the confidence of the public, or of suitors or any class of suitors in the impartiality of the Court in any matter likely to be brought before it, any public comment on such an utterance, if it were a fair comment, would, so far from being a contempt of Court, be for the public benefit, and would be entitled to similar protection to that which comment upon matters of public interest is entitled under the law of libel.”

The crime of “scandalizing the judiciary” has largely fallen into disuse. It assumed that the people who scandalize courts were always others rather than judicial staff, or even judges themselves. In Nigeria, the people most likely to scandalize the judiciary these days sit in most cases as judges and magistrates.

In her first official act as the 18th indigenous occupant of the office on Monday, 30 September, at a special session of the Supreme Court to conduct the annual ritual of inducting the latest set of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, warned that under her watch, obedience to court orders will be “non-negotiable.

No individual or institution, irrespective of their standing, will be permitted to treat the judgements of our courts with levity or disregard. The Judiciary stands resolute in ensuring that the sanctity of our legal decisions is upheld.”

Regrettably, Madam CJN labours under the misapprehension that it is always possible or easy to know what the order is that is to be obeyed. The joke is that court orders these days are so lucrative that many judges make them – in good old Nigeria-speak – double-double.

Responsibility for this sorry state lies mostly with the Federal High Court.

The ancient city of Kano now has two Emirs, one state and the other federal after a rogue Federal High Court judge decided to take chieftaincy into the federal realm.

Edo State has two Deputy Governors too.

By dint of the judicial labours of Peter Lifu, a judge, the Federal High Court also attempted to impose two separate dates on Rivers State for the conduct of Local Government elections after Chigozi Igwe, a judge of the High Court of Rivers State, had issued a considered decision setting 5 October as the date for the election. Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, acknowledged Peter Lifu’s hardwork by handing him the moniker of “that justice that gave that fraudulent judgment.”

This is not the first time the Federal High Court will gratuitously constitute itself into an appellate forum to review without benefit of the records of proceedings and with the practised ill-will of a political hit-job dressed up in judicial robes, decisions of State High Courts. Nor is it the first time that the Federal High Court will convert itself into a court of unlimited jurisdiction that it is not at the expense of a State High Court which, under the Constitution, is indeed the only court of unlimited jurisdiction.

This Federal High Court has become the place where the law falls into disrepute and Lady Justice suffers repeat rape.

This has become the routine of the Federal High Court under the leadership of its current Chief Judge who enables a notorious line up of judges of the court who clearly seem to be able to habitually scandalize the judiciary without consequence. This Chief Judge of the Federal High Court favours them with the species of cases that lend themselves to pay-as-you-go judicial dispositions that can only originate in the bedrooms of their favorite politicians.

Not even the Inspector-General of Police who must provide the steel behind the orders of courts in Nigeria, has much regard for them.

The most charitable that can be said of Kayode Egbetokun is that he is a political IGP. For most of his professional life, Mr. Egbetokun has been the Aide-de-camp to the man who now occupies the presidency. Even as IGP, the habits of a lifetime as ADC die hard. In his current office, he now heads the uniformed, armed wing of the ruling party. In that role, his brief is to make his principal happy. If a court order gets in the way of that, it is for CJN Kekere-Ekun to worry about that.

The people who have the gumption to call out such conspiracy of conceit become the butt of a line-up of professional hirelings defending the habitual malefaction of those who supervise judicial malpractice as standard procedure.

One example of such faceless hirelings is the fly-by-night entity that calls itself “Global Network for Justice and Equity.” There’s the even more risible “Centre for Reform and Advocacy”. Others are plainly disreputable. One of the more enthusiastic among that species, a lawyer, has a quite shameful rapsheet with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee. It reflects the sad state of the judiciary whose orders CJN Kekere-Ekun swears by, that such are the only specimens these days who can now be counted upon to speak up in defence of the authority of the branch of government that she must lead.

Some lawyers, Judges and politicians would like to see the new CJN shut down all criticism of judicial malfeasance, requiring them all to go to the National Judicial Council. Regrettably, she cannot do that without bringing manifest disrepute upon herself. As David Pannick KC reminds us: “where criticism [of judges] is wrong or misguided, one should have the confidence in the strength of the institution to demonstrate by its conduct that it serves a valuable function and does its job well.”

Above all, that is very much like insisting that Martin Luther, instead of posting his 95 Theses on the gate of that church in Wittenberg as he did, must hand them to the Pope. Surely, there would have been no Reformation to speak of. Meanwhile, we await the next judicial scandal of a pre-destined order on Rivers State to be issued by the Federal High Court.

Dismiss Emefiele’s Bid To Stop Properties Forfeiture Suit, $2.4m – EFCC Tells Court

Godwin Emefiele and His Wife

By Akinwale Kasali

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has urged the Federal High Court, Lagos, to dismiss a motion by the embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, governor,  Godwin Emefiele, seeking to stop the forfeiture of properties and monies linked to him.

The court had, on August 25, 2024, authorised the EFCC to temporarily take custody of the cash sum of $2.045million, seven choice landed properties and shares linked to Emefiele.

At the resumption of proceedings on Friday, Emefiele’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), urged Justice Deinde Isaac Dipeolu to stay further proceedings in the case pending the determination of the banker’s appeal.

“We’re urging your lordship to stay proceedings pending the hearing and determination of the appeal court in order to avoid judicial rascality,” Ojo said.

But EFCC’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), who appeared with Bilkisu Buhari-Bala and C.C Okezie, opposed him, saying Emefiele had not filed any appeal.

According to him, no motion from Emefiele was taken and ruled on that crystallised to an appeal.

Oyedepo said: “My lord, how can the defendant in this case rush to the Court of Appeal because the (Federal High) Court returned the (case) file to the administrative Judge for assignment, owing to the fact that the annual vacation of the court ends on the next adjourned date?

“I submit, with due respect, that the defendant just went to dump mere documents in registry of the Appeal Court. Therefore, I urge the court to hold that there is no appeal.

“Let us even assume there is an appeal, the question will be ‘has the leave of my lord been sought?’ the answer is no.

“My lord I submit with respect that this appeal cannot stop the proceedings in this matter because the leave of the court was not sought, as the rule of court has made it mandatory when it is an appeal filed on the ground of mixed fact and law.

“I submit that there is no appeal against the decision of your lordship. In an interlocutory appeal, the application of the appellant must first be taken first by the lower court before going to the higher court.

“This party has not shown any exceptional circumstances that will warrant ant stay of proceedings.

“The purported appeal has no bearing in the final determination of this case.”

“Therefore, I urged the court to hold that there is no appeal and proceed with the hearing of pending applications.”

Justices Dipeolu adjourned ruling on the issue till Monday, 11 October.

APC Clears LG Election In Benue, Rubbishes Rivers Poll

Richard Tombowua

By Ayodele Oni

The Chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, Richard Tombowua, on Sunday, declared the All Progressives Congress, (APC) Chairmanship and Councillorship Candidates as winners of the Saturday Local Government Election.

Announcing the results of the election at the Headquarters of the Commission, Tombowua said that the APC won all 23 chairmanships and 276 councillorship positions contested in the state.

He said, “The election held yesterday across the state went off without a hitch; it was free and fair, and the returning officers have submitted all the results from the field.

“From the results, the All Progressives Congress won all 23 chairmanship and 276 councillorship positions.”

He added that five of the eight political parties that submitted lists of candidates participated in the Saturday election.

The SIEC chairman listed the parties that participated in the Saturday election as follows: All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party, and All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Responding to the declaration of the results, the state chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, (IPAC) and the Labour Party, Ibrahim Idoko, commended the commission for its commitment towards a hitch-free election.

In another development, the APC in Rivers state rubished the conduct and outcome of Saturday’s local government election in the state, insisting that no election was held.

The local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has apparently triggered more crises in the state.

Despite opposition from the loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, the election was conducted on Saturday as directed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Announcing the results, RSIEC said Action Peoples Party (APP) secured 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions in the October 5 poll.

However, the APC publicity secretary in Rivers State, Ikenga Chibike, said that the judgment of the Federal High Court stands, describing the election as a mirage and a “cooked-up result”.

He stated that the party decided to boycott the election to “obey the judgement from the Federal High Court, which barred the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, (RSIEC), the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services, (DSS), and the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), from going ahead with the election.

“As far as APC is concerned in Rivers State, there was no election on Saturday, so if anybody is announcing anything, it is a cooked-up result.

“The law remains the law. It says that if RSIEC must conduct a proper election, it must follow the due process.

“The court had also declared that every action taken prior to this time is null and void. We are standing with that judgement so we did not participate.”

The All Progressive Congress, APC, has rubbished the Rivers State local government election and its outcome, insisting that no election was held in the state.

Rivers: We Will Provide New Style Of Leadership At LG Level – Chairman APP

Action Peoples Party - APP

By Ayodele Oni

The Action Peoples Party, (APP), in Rivers State has reacted to the outcome of Saturday’s Local Government Election describing it as product of selflessness on the part of members of the party.

The party commended Governor Siminialayi Fubara for his leadership, generosity, and fairness before, during, and after the council elections.

The party also praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, headed by Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, for conducting the election with transparency and fairness.

The state chairman of the party, Sunny Wokekoro, spoke shortly after the party’s 23 chairmanship candidates were declared winners in the local government council election in the state.

A statement on Sunday by the media office of the party noted that Governor Fubara has set a leadership precedent in the state by ensuring a smooth election process, even though his political party was not on the ballot.

The statement, quoting the chairman added “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate RSIEC, under the leadership of Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, for their timeliness and efficiency in organizing the elections. This is a stark contrast to previous elections organized by INEC.

“RSIEC was precise and timely, with election materials arriving at the voting centers early. Voters were able to cast their votes without any issues.”

“I also want to thank the governor of the state, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, for providing a level playing field for the election to proceed smoothly, despite his party not contesting.”

Hon. Wokekoro further expressed gratitude to the people of the state for coming out in large numbers to vote overwhelmingly for the party’s candidates, assuring that the party will not let down the people who have placed their trust in it.

While acknowledging the efforts put into reaching out to people at the grassroots as the reason behind the party’s victory in the local government election, Wokekoro also assured that the Action Peoples Party is bringing in a leadership style that will cater to the needs and well-being of people at the grassroots.

“This victory did not come easily; we worked very hard for it. We traveled throughout the state to campaign for votes. I promise the people of Rivers that the Action Peoples Party will not disappoint them.

“We have always believed in a new Nigeria and a new Rivers state. We are bringing in leadership that is proactive and responsive to the needs of the people. We are bringing in leadership that prioritizes the people above all else.

“I am confident that once the people of Rivers see our new grassroots leadership style, it will be easy to convince Governor Fubara to join our party.”

Asari Dokubo To Wike: “I Have The Capacity To Contain You”

Asari Dokubo and Nyesom Wike

By Akinwale Kasali

“I will shoot down your Military and Police helicopters”

Asari Dokubo, a well-known Rivers State-born warlord has sent a strong message to Nyesom Wike, immediate past Governor of Rivers State, and now, President Bola Tinubu’s Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Dokubo is warning Wike to get out of Rivers State, to be careful, to stop the crisis he is allegedly stoking, and stop “monitoring” his (Dokubo’s house).

Dokubo’s warning yesterday followed the Rivers State Local Government election which held in the state same yesterday, Saturday, October 5, 2024.

While Wike and his loyalists –  factions of both the PDP and APC –  insisted that the election should not hold, the Rivers State Government, headed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and other Political Parties, insisted it must hold.

It did, in spite of the many obstacles against it, including the inexplicable withdrawal of the Police from the exercise.

In insisting on no-election, the Wike group flaunted a judgement from a Federal High Court, Abuja, while the State Government flaunted one from the State High Court which said it should go on.

Dokubo is one of the majority of Rivers State indigenes and residents who insisted on the election, and trooped out to vote. But he raised an alert that helicopters, allegedly, carrying Soldiers and Policemen were over-flying his house. He alleged they were sent by Wike, and he threatened to shoot them down. He, also, said he has the capacity to contain the threat against him, which he said were instigated by Wike. Even the Government, he claimed, knows he has the capacity. He emphasized that nobody can subdue Rivers people or make them Wike’s slaves.

Following is part of Dokubo’s statement which he video- recorded and released on 5th October 2024.

“Good morning, good afternoon,  good evening. As I am talking to you, Wike’s Soldiers, Wike’s Police have been flying over my house and the compound in the last 30 minutes with two helicopters.

“I have the capacity to contain them. Nigeria cannot surrender to Wike. Rivers people will not surrender to Wike, Ijaw people will not succumb to Wike.

“I have the capacity to contain them, and the Government knows that I have the capacity to contain them because I have been containing other people.

“I am 60 years old and I have never been afraid of death, I have always embraced death, so am not afraid.

“So all those that are there, when their helicopter is shot down, let no one blame me. I will shoot down the helicopter.  I will shoot down the helicopter and I swear to Allah, I will shoot it down.

“Whoever is commanding them should be warned. I will shoot down the helicopter. Enough is enough, that Tinubu will hand over Rivers State into slavery to Wike.

“Wike is a nobody without the paraphenalia of office, let them remove his fame.

“Let them remove his paraphernalia from him. I think he has billions, he knows the market and he has bought convoy. Let them remove this thing from him and let us see.

“Go and vote. I will vote and nothing will happen. We will vote and the vote will be counted. Local Government Chairmen will be sworn in. Chairmen will be sworn in and we will see. I dont want to talk too much.

“There is a Military formation in this community and we did not look for their trouble.

“Do you think I am a coward like you.

“You will see our capacity.”

The results of the election have been declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.

The Governor’s proxy party, Action Peoples Party, APP, swept the polls. It won 22 out of 23 Loca Government Areas.

Ogwuaniocha Crisis: Ogene Hails Soludo For Setting Up Commission Of Enquiry

0
Charles Soludo - Governor of Anambra State

Member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state, for the recent constitution of a Commission of Enquiry to address the Ogwuaniocha crisis, in Ogbaru local government area.

Over 5,000 residents of  Ogwuaniocha community were displaced from both their homes and farmlands by criminal gangs who have taken over the community and its environs since the communal crisis started some years back, leading to untold hardship and increased criminality in the LGA.

Ogene who has consistently called on the Anambra state government to make deliberate efforts to end the communal conflict in Ogwuaniocha community which had led to the abduction of the traditional ruler – who is yet to be accounted for since November 15, 2021 – made this commendation in a statement in Awka, the Anambra state capital on Sunday.

The lawmaker said that this move has the potential of reducing the incidents of violent crimes and other criminality in Ogbaru and Anambra state in general. He also called on all concerned to embrace this development and seek sustainable reconciliation for the overall peace and development of Ogwuaniocha and Ogbaruland.

The panel which was inaugurated on Friday October 4, 2024, is made up of 13 members and has Hon. Justice C. E. K Anigbogu, Rtd as Chairman and Professor Felicia Anyogu as Secretary.

Other members include, Patricia Igwebuike Esq, Gen. Laz Iloh, Rtd,Monsignor Theo Odukween. Dr. Chinedu Nnatunya,

Prof. Ikenna Alumona, Mr. Benjamin Uzoka, Chief Emma Obi,

HRH Victor Awogu, Prof. Ikem Ivite Nwadigwe,  Comrade Emeka Okoye-Ozo and Prof. Charles Ofoegbu.

According to a document released by the office of the Secretary to the State Government and signed by Justice Anigbogu, the Commission has requested for memoranda from intrested parties, informing the panel what they know about the crisis in the community, to assist the panel in facilitating reconciliation in Ogwuaniocha community.

The document also revealed that oral evidence would be entertained when the panel commences sitting after the collation of memoranda.

Ogene, who is also the leader of the Anambra state Caucus in the House of Representatives, had earlier this year in February and April appealed to the Anambra state government to set up a panel of inquiry to address the violent conflict and bring an end to the years of lawlessness, fear, reprisal killings and criminality in the community.

He had noted that since 2021, there has been no progressive social or economic activities in the community as a result of the intractable crisis.

At one time, Ogene had in a viral video lamented that the Anambra state government, since the last administration of Chief Willie Obiano,  treated the crisis in the oil rich community with unexplainable disdain, in spite of the fact that the community produces the mass of oil revenue that the state is currently enjoying as an oil producing state.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman of House Committee on Renewable Energy, also, in the video, disclosed that he had earlier in February, written to the state governor, drawing his attention to the lingering crisis which has led to the sacking of the over 5,000 residents of the community from both their homes and farmlands, by criminal gangs who have now taken over Ogwuaniocha and its environs, leading to untold hardship and increased criminality in the local government area.

Ogene’s earlier letter to Soludo, which he accused the governor of ignoring at the time was entitled: “Urgent need for government intervention in the lingering crisis in Ogwuaniocha community in Ogbaru LGA: A request for panel of inquiry.

Anambra 2025 Guber: “I Will Spend Only One Term”, LP Hopeful Moghalu Vows

0
Chief George Muoghalu

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Former National Auditor of the All Progressive Congress APC , George .Moghalu, has finally thrown his hat into the gubernatorial ring of Anambra State.

The Source reports that early next year ,the job of  Governor Charles Soludo will be at stake for either him to renew and/or make way for another, according to the whim and caprices of the electorate.

Moghalu,  the Chief Executive made his intentions known on Saturday October 5, 2024 while interacting with the media at his residence in Nnewi .

He informed that Governor Soludo, having disappointed the good people of Anambra has to be replaced, hence his  decision  to offer himself as a viable alternative.

For the records, before his sudden death ,Senator Ifeanyi Uba from the same Nnewi axis was set to slug it out with Governor Soludo.

In fact, he had told any one that cared to listen that he was as good as the next Governor of Anambra State .

He, however, died in London about two months ago .

Before, his declaration, speculations had been rife that Moghalu will be stepping into the shoes of the late Senator Uba by contesting the vacant  Anambra South. Senatorial seat .

However, Moghalu one of the founding scions and chieftains of the now defunct All Peoples Party APP, at the onset of the current democratic experience in 1999, has rejected harbouring any Senatorial ambition at any point .

He informed that he will be jostling for the Anambra gubernatorial seat on the platform of the Labour Party, LP.

The Source reports that Moghalu had, on October 1, formally joined forces with the LP, having earlier exited the APC.

He noted that his decision to join the 2025 Anambra state Governorship race was arrived at after extensive consultations with all relevant organs ,including his immediate family members.

“Before I did so ( joined LP ,and the Governorship race ) ,I consulted my wife ,and children ,my followers and friends ,and I was convinced that Labour Party is the party that aligns with my person and the best suited platform to realize my ambition .

“We need to redeem Anambra fast because Soludo has failed the people .There is dearth of infrastructure in the state and security has collapsed.

“We will not tolerate him.( Governor Soludo)  any further. What he could not do in four years ,he will never be able to do in eight years .You don’t need eight years to develop Anambra” Moghalu stated .

But the former APC top shot, will  contend first with the likes of Valentine Ozoigbo within the LP fold before facing Governor Soludo ,who baring any last minute development will be flying the ticket of the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA .

For one, apart from joining the  rank of LP and declaring to contest before Moghalu, Ozoigbo is considered as a veteran when it comes to the jostle for the Anambra seat of power .

He flew the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP last term and lost to Governor Soludo.  He is set to try once again, but this time on the platform of LP, having earlier left the PDP.

However, Moghalu is optimistic that the zoning arrangement which presently domiciles the Governorship seat in the Anambra South where he hails from together with Suludo tilts the scale in his favour.

He promised to spend only one term since Governor Soludo has already used the first four years of the available two terms.

Peter Obi Hails New Asagba of Asaba

0
Peter Obi and Asagba of Asaba

The ancient city of Asaba came alive Thursday, as notable dignitaries and citizens gathered to witness the historic coronation of Professor Epiphany Chibuogu Azinge, SAN, as the 14th Asagba of Asaba. Among those in attendance was Mr. Peter Obi, who expressed his joy at being part of the occasion, describing it as “momentous, not only for the people of Asaba but for all who appreciate the value of tradition and leadership.”

Professor Azinge, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and distinguished academic, ascended to the throne after decades of remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s legal and academic sectors. His coronation represents a new era for the Asaba Kingdom, as he takes on the mantle of leadership in a community steeped in history and cultural significance.

The ceremony was a grand celebration, attracting well-wishers from across Nigeria, including traditional rulers, government officials, and members of the legal fraternity. In his remarks, Mr. Obi highlighted Prof. Azinge’s outstanding service in law and education, stating, “His elevation to this revered position reflects his lifetime of service, both in academia and in law, where his contributions have been exceptional. His coronation marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Asaba Kingdom.”

In keeping with tradition, Mr. Obi humbly paid his respects to the newly crowned Asagba by kneeling before him. Reflecting on the gesture, he noted, “This act of reverence speaks to our age-long shared cultural heritage and the honour we accord to our traditional values and leadership. Moments like these highlight the importance of preserving our rich cultural heritage, which is vital for building the productive society we aspire to, one necessary for a new Nigeria.”

As the 14th Asagba, Prof. Azinge’s reign is anticipated to bring peace, progress, and prosperity to the people of Asaba, reinforcing the values that have long sustained the kingdom. Many attendees, including Mr. Obi, voiced their confidence in Prof. Azinge’s ability to lead Asaba into a brighter future, commending his proven leadership skills.

In closing, Mr. Obi added, “It was a privilege to witness such a historic event and to join in the festivities that celebrated both the rich heritage of Asaba and the outstanding leadership qualities of Prof. Azinge. I wish him many fruitful years as the Asagba, and may his reign bring peace, progress, and prosperity to his people.”

Appointments: “You Are Not Fair To Christians”, CAN Tells Tinubu

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The umbrella body of Nigerian Christians, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, North West Zone, has faulted the lopsided nature of the composition of the Board of the newly created Northwest Development Commission.

The North West CAN, said the non inclusion of even a single Christian on the entire board is totally unacceptable .

It has, therefore, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent steps towards rectifying the anomaly.

The Source reports that President Tinubu,  had, last week, named seven Directors to serve on the Board of the Commission.

However, the CAN North West, in a statement issued Saturday by its Chairman, Elder Sunday Oibe insisted that the appointment did not reflect the diversity of religion as no single Christian was deemed fit to be selected from the seven states of the geo-political region.

The CAN ,said that the President and others within the corridors of power should be conscious of the fact that there are indigenous Christians in all the States that make up the North West region of the country.

” We are deeply concerned about the recent appointments to the Board of Directors of the North West Development Commission by President Tinubu .

“Unfortunately, these appointments do not reflect the diversity of the region as no Christian from the seven states was selected to the Board of the Commission.

“We are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the appointment of a Board of Directors for the Commission by President Tinubu shows that the intention behind the Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 Presidential election has started manifesting, otherwise how come there is no single Christian on the Board of Directors of the Commission as if there are no Christian faithful in the region?

“Mr President, take note that there are indigenous Christians in all the States that make up the North West – Kaduna, Kano Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States – and as such it should not be assumed that all the people are Muslims.

“For this reason, we want to remind President Tinubu that North West is made up of both Christians and Muslims, Hausa, Fulani and other tribes as such this lopsided appointments with no consideration for the feelings of this other bloc is, to say the least, unbecoming of the Government of President Tinubu and we are disenchanted by this action.

“For the sake of inclusiveness and fair representation, it is imperative that Christians are appointed to the Commission.

“The current situation is unacceptable because it perpetuates marginalization. We urge President Tinubu to reassess these appointments and make necessary adjustments to ensure balanced representation”, part of the statement reads.
