Thin Line Between Life And Death: A Personal Ordeal

Babafemi Ojudu

By Babafemi Ojudu

I recently traveled to Lagos to visit a former staff member who had suffered a stroke. He was very dear to me during his time as our Chief Photographer, and he once risked his life to protect me. When Abacha’s regime was hunting down media critics, charging them with “accessory after the fact of treason,” this man shielded me from arrest, putting himself at great personal risk.

After leaving his home near Gberigbe on the outskirts of Ikorodu, I received a call from the Chief Imam of my town, inviting me to be his guest at this year’s Maulud Nabiyi. Early the next morning, I set off for Ado Ekiti to attend the event. By evening, I returned home, eager to rest after the long day.

Exhausted and famished, I boiled water in my bedroom with an electric kettle to make tea before bed. Unbeknownst to me, there had been a spill. Unaware of the hazard, I went to sleep. At 3 a.m., I woke to use the bathroom. As I stepped out of bed, my foot slipped on the wet floor. In those few terrifying seconds, I struggled to avoid hitting my head on the hard surface. Instead, my body twisted, and I landed heavily on my left ankle, with all my weight crashing down.

That marked the beginning of an ordeal that would last almost five weeks.

Writhing in pain, I lay on the floor, gathering my strength and composure. The next morning, unable to walk, I called a physician. He bandaged my leg and urged me to get an X-ray. The results confirmed my fear: I had suffered a fracture, and my left foot was soon encased in a cast.

The days that followed were a battle with pain, boredom, and isolation. The house felt emptier than ever. I hired a carer who bathed me with wet towels, as I couldn’t manage on my own. The cast felt like a heavy burden tied to my leg, and every night was a struggle for comfort. Moving from the living room to the bedroom with a walker became an exhausting ordeal.

Yet, amid the physical discomfort, I found solace in work. I immersed myself in writing, reading, and editing, keeping my health challenges private from most of my collaborators. Ironically, this period of immobility turned into one of my most productive. I used the time to plan future projects, finalize events, and began outlining new book titles, even putting the finishing touches on a manuscript headed to the press.

This experience, however, opened my eyes to a greater danger. I learned that many others—far too many—have suffered worse fates from similar domestic accidents. As word of my injury spread, I heard countless stories of people, especially seniors, who had slipped in their homes—often in the bathroom—hit their heads on hard surfaces, and either lost their lives or been left paralyzed.

I feel compelled to share these thoughts in the hope of preventing more tragedies. There are simple precautions we can all take to avoid these accidents, particularly as we age or if we care for older family members:

  1. Keep floors dry – Whether in the kitchen, bathroom, or living areas, always ensure that floors are free from spills and moisture.
  2. Install non-slip mats – Use these in bathrooms, kitchens, and other potentially wet areas to prevent slipping.
  3. Choose rough-surface tiles – Consider installing tiles with more traction in bathrooms and other high-risk areas.
  4. Ensure proper lighting – Keep pathways well-lit, especially at night. A small nightlight in the bathroom or hallway can make a big difference.
  5. Sit before standing – When waking in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, take a few moments to sit at the edge of the bed before standing. This helps regain balance and avoid dizziness.
  6. Install grab bars and railings – In bathrooms or along stairways, sturdy support can prevent serious falls.
  7. Wear non-slip footwear – Shoes or slippers with good grip can prevent slipping on smooth surfaces.
  8. The eighth point is to focus 100 percent on your immediate environment when you are in the bathroom. Set aside any thoughts or concerns that may be bothering you, and ignore distractions like a ringing phone. Be fully aware of yourself and your surroundings.

I was fortunate—very fortunate—to survive this accident. But many are not so lucky. The difference between life and death can be just a few seconds of carelessness, a fleeting moment of oversight that changes everything. We must be vigilant and take every precaution to avoid becoming victims of these preventable accidents.

My heartfelt appreciation goes to everyone who lightened my burden during this period: doctors, physiotherapists , friends, my wife who, though far away at work, gave instructions for my comfort until she could visit—and my children, who called constantly to check on me. Many local friends came by with bottled water, fruits, balms, and painkillers, all hoping to ease my discomfort.

Thankfully, the cast was removed just two days before Afe Babalola Day, an event I had spent much of this time planning as co-chair of the central committee. Appearing spritely at the event, albeit with a slight limp, surprised those who knew of my ordeal and puzzled those who didn’t. Wearing a knee-length outfit, many stole glances at my swollen foot, wondering what had happened. But despite the lingering pain, I did what I had to do, ensuring the event honoring our icon, Aare Afe Babalola, was a success. From that day forward, I will fondly refer to him as Afe The Great.

Fani Kayode Heartbroken As His SA Slumps In Hotel Room, Dies

0
Ndifreke Saviour Mark and Femi Fani-Kayode

By Adesina Soyooye

The soft and compassionate side of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister for Aviation, were in full display when he announced, on his X account, the sudden and painful passing of his Personal Assistant, Mr Ndifreke Saviour Mark.

His post dripped of palpable pains and helplessness. Not for nothing. This particular Special Assistant was family. He had been his loyal and trustee aide for over three decades. The former Minister had a lot of respect for Mark, so much so that in death, to keep Mark’s dignity, he found it difficult to let on that Mark checked into a hotel with a woman right after attending a Church Service on Sunday.

He was in the room with the woman when he slumped and died. Fani-Kayode kept referring to the woman as “an individual.”

However, the ill-fated woman and about three of the Hotel’s staff, including the owner, manager and receptionist are in Police custody while investigations go on.

Mr Mark was married and he and his wife  had two children.

Fani-Kayode:

“He (Mr Mark) left home at 5.40am on the morning of Sunday 13th October for morning Mass as he was a devoted Catholic and member of the Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro after which he went to a hotel by the name of Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, Abuja.

“According to the police he took a room at the hotel and spent some time there with an individual after which he apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence.

“He was taken to Asokoro District Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival and has since been put in the hospital morgue.

“The individual he was with at the time of his death in the hotel is now in police custody and I have insisted on a full criminal investigation of the matter and an autopsy.

“The hotel receptionist has also been detained by the police whilst both the manager and the owner of the hotel were invited for questioning earlier this week.

“The entire hotel was also sealed up by the police for two days and the room in which he lodged remains sealed till today.

“I have broken the sad news to his family, I have met with his wife Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark and his Uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias, (who represented his family) and I have also told them of my intention to ensure that, if indeed there is any foul play, justice is done and those behind it are brought to book.

“We shared many dreams and aspirations and fought many battles together shoulder to shoulder. Now he has gone it has left much pain but I give thanks to God for his life and for the 52 years that he spent on earth.

“Ihave assured his wife and family of my intention to stand by them at this difficult time and to ensure that they do not lack or want for anything.

“I have absolute confidence in the FCT Police Command to get to the bottom of this matter after which we can proceed to bury a man that was my most loyal staff and most trusted aide.

“Most important of all is the fact that he was a kind, reliable and compassionate soul who brought joy to many and who was incapable of hurting a fly. I will never forget him and though he has passed he lives on in our hearts.

“I thank all those that have found the time to come and mourn with us at this difficult time. May Ndifreke’s precious soul rest in peace and may the Lord comfort his wife and two beautiful young children.”

Gowon’s Birthday: “Civil War Indisputably Darkest Part Of Nigeria’s Journey” – Peter Obi

0
Peter Obi

The Labour Party leader and the Presidential Candidate of the party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi has given a subtle response to the barrage of attacks he received at the weekend for Congratulating the former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon on his 90th birthday anniversary.

Writing a long response in his X handle on Sunday titled, ‘Why I Congratulated Gen. Gowon at 90’ Obi said “My felicitation with Nigeria’s former military Head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, on his 90th birthday anniversary, which was celebrated by a cross-section of Nigerians, has been received with mixed feelings by some Nigerians, and some have expressed their sentiments publicly, and privately to me.

“I share in some of them, and I feel that as a leader in the vanguard of providing direction for our country to shift base away from all our shortcomings, including the issues that caused our avoidable cruel civil war, I needed to show to the World that the ultimate heroism is forgiving the enemy and moving forward.

“Indisputably, the darkest part of our 64-year journey as a nation is the 30 months of civil war from 1967 to 1970 and God almighty whose way is not our way must have a reason why he kept the Chief Prosecutor of the war who is General Gowon alive to be 90 years today and the man who saw the end of the war, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to be there at 87 years super-heading all the moves to see a reconciled and just Nigeria.

Yakubu Gowon
Gen Yakubu Gowon

“There was also a developing new spirit why the same country, Nigeria, gave the Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a heroic national burial on 2 March 2012, when he joined his ancestors, coincidentally under my tenure as Governor of Anambra state. The status of the burial given to Dim Ojukwu remains the boldest indication to the World that Nigeria as a country is disposed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation.

“There are various ways human beings can respond to acts of evil, especially one that claimed millions of lives; one is the tragedy of revenge, and another offers the hope of forgiveness in an attempt to forget. The latter conforms neatly with the template I adopted in greeting Gen Gowon at 90 years old.

“In all my dealings with human beings, I tried to be guided by my faith as a Christian in a strong message preached by Jesus Christ himself and underscored in reflections in St Paul’s letter to the Colossians 3:13: “Bear with each other and forgive one another: if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” And to Ephesians 4: 31-32 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice”

“Whatever reason I will give for joining the rest of Nigerians to greet General Gowon, may never truly conform with some persons, especially direct victims of the war, but anger, hurt, and bitterness are the commonest responses to cruelty. It fuels sectarianism, it leads to resistance and avoidable blood feuds that we are witnessing across the globe, and even in our country and it does not abate.

“There is something about forgiveness, it sets the person doing it free. Forgiveness is more a process than an instinct. It’s hate that has put our society, blessed by God to be the greatest land in the black World, down, but this hate has to stop.

“I was under ten years old when the Nigeria/Biafra war started in 1967. Most of my supporters across the country joining me get a new Nigeria were born after the war, and I didn’t feel I should drag them back to the dark side of our history by being unforgiving. I feel such an act will derail the message of a New Nigeria that we insist is POssible.

“‘Must you greet him? Why didn’t you keep quiet?’ some angrily say to me, but that will still be injurious to our journey to a new Nigeria where all political vices, including but not limited to ethnic, religious, bitterness, and regional segregation, are eliminated.

“Various personal experiences of victims of injustice across the globe who have chosen to put ugly things behind them visibly demonstrate the transformative power of forgiveness in healing personal and collective wounds.

“With these explanations, I like to admonish all those angered by my greetings to the elder statesman to bear with me and join me in this mission to create a country where hate, unforgiving spirit, and other vices will give way for justice.

What Nigeria needs badly and urgently to survive going forward is good governance, which can only germinate and grow in true peace and the presence of justice. Thanks and God bless.”

NDLEA Raids Senator’s Two Residences, Recovers Drugs

NDLEA officers

By Gideon Njoku

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Monday, October 21, made a startling disclosure. The Agency said it discovered Drugs in two residences of a serving Senator, Oyeyola Ashiru, Kwara South. It also revealed that two Aides of the Senator are in its custody.

The NDLEA made this announcement on Monday when it tried to rationalise the reason behind the Senator’s vicious attack on the Agency a few days ago.

Not a few Nigerians were shocked when Senator Ashiru, on the floor of the Senate, during plenary, ran down the NDLEA. He dismissed the Agency as incompetent and very corrupt. To him, the NDLEA should be scrapped. And he gave example of the corruption in the Agency which is headed by one of Nigeria’s best, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa.

But on Monday, the NDLEA give us an inkling why Senator Ashiru dragged the it in the mud.

At a press conference addressed by the Agency’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi in the company of NDLEA’s Area Commander, Kwara State, Ayodeji Olaoluwa, the NDLEA revealed that the Senator ran it down in such a manner, because it raided the Senator’s personal residences in Ilorin and Offa, and  recovered illicit drugs. In the process, based  on thorough intelligence gathering, Aides of the Senator were arrested, and are in custody.

The Agency said it waited fir the Senator for a whole week to recant his wild allegation or provide evidence. But since none was coming, it decided to let Nigerians know the reason behind Senator Ashiru’s attack on the Agency.

Said the NDLEA in part:

“While acknowledging the great work of the Senate towards the upliftment of Nigeria and Nigerians especially their support for the ongoing concerted efforts towards the amendment of the NDLEA Act, the Agency however is duty-bound to respond to the unprovoked attack against it by Senator Ashiru during his contribution to the debate on a new bill for an Act to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.”

“The Agency has no option than to come out and set the record straight for the benefit of other distinguished members of the Senate, our local and international partners as well as the general public.

“There is no doubt that setting up another agency is within the power of the Senate and if we are invited to contribute to the debate we will be willing to offer our opinion.

“While we cannot fault the power of the senate on that, yet for a member of the upper chamber to have made such an unfounded and unwarranted categorical statement against the agency led us to look inward to see what could have been responsible for such a carpeting general statement.

“What we found was shocking, and we concluded that his statement came from a place of vendetta and certainly not out of public interest or any altruistic motive.

“The personal house of the senator in GRA Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, had been raided in the recent past, where drugs and illicit substances were recovered while two of his aides: Ibrahim Mohammed and Muhammed Yahaya were arrested.

”Based on credible intelligence and surveillance which confirmed that the senator’s house was being used as a drug joint for drug dealers and users, the house was raided by our operatives at 1:30pm on February 4, 2024 during which the two aides were arrested, while a third suspect escaped arrest.

“In another encounter with the senator, the Agency also received intelligence that some of his boys popularly known as ‘Omo Senator’ operating from his hometown, Offa, were equally dealing in illicit drugs. A raid was subsequently carried out on their joint in Offa where one of them, Oluwatosin Odepidan was arrested and illicit drugs such as methamphetamine and cannabis recovered from him on June 11, 2023.

“The bid to get the Agency drop the case against Odepidan including a visit to the Kwara State Command headquarters of the Agency in Ilorin by the Personal Assistant to the senator, one Omoluabi, was rebuffed as Odepidan was promptly charged to court and prosecuted.

“Though the culprit jumped court bail in 2023, he was rearrested in 2024 after the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest. He was eventually convicted and sentenced in June 2024.

“So, going by this backstory, it is deductible that these encounters that the Agency has had with the senator, must have been responsible for his outburst, and unfortunately, false allegation, the type that nobody within and outside of government has ever levelled against NDLEA before.

Expressing surprise that Ashiru dared say the Agency is corrupt, compromised and corrupt, the NDLEA reeled out a couple of its accomplishments even recently.

NDLEA: “Incidentally, the next day after Senator Ashiru made the statement, NDLEA in Lagos commissioned a new Marine Command Headquarters building donated by the Government of the UK.

“A similar facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport was donated last year by the same British government. We have had other facilities donated by United States INL and executed by UNODC in the past 12 months. We have been receiving various support from the governments of France, Germany and the US, among others.

“Suffice it to say that in the past three years, NDLEA has emerged as a regional leader among national drug law enforcement agencies. So, come to think about it, an agency so badmouthed by Senator Ashiru couldn’t have been attracting such international goodwill and commendation for being the ‘most corrupt government agency’ in Nigeria.

“Against the background of our encounter with people linked to him, we are wont to believe that Senator Ashiru’s invectives against NDLEA were borne out of vendetta and not any opinion made in the public interest.

“As an agency, we have been professional in our activities and interactions with citizens as we carry out arrests daily. In the past three years, we have made over 52, 000 arrests and got more than 9, 000 convictions, including three life sentences this year.

“And, as part of our mandate, we have engaged in over 7,000 awareness and sensitisation activities in schools, workplaces, worship centres and communities; treatment and rehabilitation of more than 33,000 drug users including the last two persons arrested in the senator’s house; supported by governments, organisations and other stakeholders in the country and around the world.

“Outside this country, NDLEA has become a reference for drug law enforcement. Therefore, the statement by Senator Ashiru, made in the country’s hallowed chamber in the course of a legislative debate, and made to justify the creation of another agency is motivated by malice; it is a gross misrepresentation of fact; and it is defamatory to the image of NDLEA. We believe the well-meaning public; our stakeholders and our partners can see through such calculated mendacity.

“We remain undeterred by Senator Ashiru’s attack but will be relentless in ongoing effort to dismantle all illicit drug networks across the country including the one operating in the lawmaker’s house.

“So, if Senator Ashiru has a personal grudge against NDLEA, it shouldn’t be cloaked as a matter of public concern. His statement of October 15, 2024, uttered in the hallowed chamber of the Nigerian Senate, is a gross abuse of his position as a legislator of the Federal Republic to undermine an agency of government by wrong accusation calculated to erode public confidence in NDLEA and detract from its integrity. And we dare say that such will not deter us from our ongoing effort to dismantle all illicit drug networks including the one operating from the senator’s residence.

“NDLEA since January 2021 has been on a journey of reforms, and so far, we are glad with the progress we are making. We are grateful to the federal and state governments for the support we have been enjoying. We are equally grateful to the National Assembly for the huge support they give that has made possible the turnaround of NDLEA from a dormant agency to a vibrant government organ.

“We equally acknowledge the unprecedented collaboration with our partners, which has made our work easier. We have concrete results to show for our efforts, and those results cannot be wished away by anyone’s careless remarks,” the statement noted.

By Ayodele Oni

Conference of National Ex-Officio members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suggested that only convocation of an emergency National Executive Council, (NEC), meeting will avert the looming implosion in the party.

The NEC meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

The ex-officio members spoke against rising discord within the leadership of Nigeria’s main opposition political party, in a statement made available to journalists.

The statement was signed by Dr. Yunana Ilya (North-Central), Dr. Nicholas Msheliza (North-East), Chief Madumere Chinemerem (South-East), Chief Patrick Agbe (South-South), Chief Faboyede Clement (South-West) and Alhaji Ibrahim Alhaji (North-West).

The group members, who are mostly former state chairmen, stated threw their support for the peace effort of the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed.

“As an integral part of NEC of our great party, and one of its last bastions with the grassroots, who believe in the resurgence of our party’s popularity, we have critically brainstormed and dispassionately resolved, as a matter of urgency, to call on the leadership of the party to ensure that the NEC meeting scheduled for October 24, 2024, holds.

“This will afford members, who are aggrieved, the opportunity to be heard and their issues addressed.

“We have viewed with utter dismay and concern the dangerous turn of events within the top echelon of our party in recent times. Such events had the tendency to shake the very foundation of our party.

On the imperatives of a NEC meeting to resolve the issues afflicting the party, the group, said it would afford aggrieved members the opportunity to be heard and for their grievances to be addressed.

According to them, the constitution of the party mandated the NEC to meet at least once every quarter, but added that this had not been so.

“Through the firm and sterling leadership qualities of His Excellency, Senator Bala Mohammed, the PDP Governors’ Forum has not only provided the needed direction but has indeed lived up to expectations.

“Nigerians still believe that PDP is the only viable alternative to the failed Tinubu-led APC administration,” the ex-officio members declared.

Ondo State Police Command has upbraided residents of the State on the evils of peddling fake News ahead of the November Governorship Election.

The Command pointed out that unsubstantiated report is capable of disrupting the peace of the state as it could lead to negative reactions from the people.

Reacting to series of fake News now circulating in the state, the Command’s spokesperson,

Funmilayo Odunlami, stated that videos of old event are being circulated as if they are recent happenings.

The Command’s statement reads “The Ondo State Police Command is issuing a critical warning regarding the alarming rise of false information circulating on social media, particularly as we approach the Gubernatorial Election.

“The Command has observed a troubling trend of old videos and misleading content being shared with the intent to incite unrest within the community.

“Recently, a video depicting flooding in Ore from August 2013 was irresponsibly circulated by individuals whose motives remain unclear.

“Such actions are not only misleading, but pose significant risks, especially during this crucial electoral period, as the spread of misinformation can undermine public trust, incite violence, jeopardize public safety, and threaten the integrity of our democracy.

“It will ultimately deprive the people of a level playing field for the exercise of their civic rights and responsibilities.

“In a similar event, a story alleging the amputation of fingers from a corpse at a mortuary in Ajowa-Akoko was found to be false, as confirmed by the Divisional Police Officer who visited the morgue.

“The Police Command emphasizes the importance of verifying information before sharing or reposting, as constructive engagement is essential for fostering a peaceful environment during this pivotal time in the history of the State.

“The good people of Ondo State are urged to remain critical of the information they encounter, stay vigilant, and distance themselves from those who seek to exploit the current situation for personal gain. Instead, they should practice responsible sharing and fact-checking.

“Finally, while assuring the citizens of the Force’s readiness, in collaboration with sister security and safety agencies, to ensure free, fair, and safe elections, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Oladipo Peter, wishes to state that the Command under his watch will not stand idly by while agents of calumny operate.

Bobrisky’s Investigative Panels Says Bobrisky Served Jail Term In Prison, Enjoyed Certain Privileges

Contrary to allegation peddled by Blogger and Social Media Influencer, Vincent Martin Otse, popularly known as TheVeryDarkMan, that Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye also known as Bobrisky spent his Six Month Jail Term at an Apartment close to the Correctional Facility in Lagos has been debunked by the investigative panel tasked with probing allegations that convicted cross-dresser was kept out of the custodial center.

The panel, however, confirmed that Bobrisky received certain privileges during his time behind bars.

Uju Agomoh, Executive Director and founder of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action, PRAWA, who is a member of the panel, stated that there was no evidence to support the accusation that Bobrisky stayed outside the prison during his sentence, which lasted from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024.

“The panel did not find any evidence thus far that suggested Mr. Okuneye slept outside the custodial center during the period of his imprisonment,” Agomoh said.

She clarified that Bobrisky served his six-month correctional sentence with the usual remission applicable to such cases.

It would be recalled that anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, charged Bobrisky  to Court for Abusing the Naira and was  sentenced to Six-Month Jail Term By the Court.

Following his release after serving his Jail Term, a voice note surfaced where  Bobrisky, allegedly, admitted he bribed Officers at the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, in order to enjoy certain privileges, including staying at an Apartment close to the Correctional Facility courtesy of his godfather and the Controller General of prisons.

The leaked audio also saw Bobrisky claiming he bribed Officers of the EFCC with the sum of N15 million to drop the money laundering charges against him.

The allegations generated controversy, prompting the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to call for a thorough investigation into the case. Two officers of the NCoS were also suspended.

Ola Olukayode, EFCC Chairman also called for an immediate investigation into the matter.

Parents Call Out Private Schools Over Wasteful Textbooks Amidst Hardship

Textbooks

By Akinwale Kasali

Time was when Textbooks usage in Nigeria Schools was passed from one generation to another, but this has suddenly become a thing of the past.

Despite the increasing expenditure and low purchasing power of Nigerians occasioned by high inflation rate and the economic misfortunes bedeviling the nation, Private Schools have further inflicted more economic pains on Nigerian Parents over wasteful textbooks imposed on pupils and students by the management of Private Primary and Secondary Schools Nationwide.

Before now, questions in textbooks were solved inside note books, irrespective of the subjects, but this has  become a thing of the past, as students now solve and answer questions inside the textbooks.

The longevity and usefulness of the textbooks are now narrowed to a year and for the particular student who is using it, with no future relevance and usefulness for the upcoming generation.

Speaking on this development, aggrieved and concerned Parents have called for an end to a wasteful system adopted by private schools and textbook publishers, which has left them with piles of unused textbooks, at a time it’s difficult to meet many financial obligations.

Aderonke Akinnugba, a Parent, who has Three Children in a Private Primary School said that purchasing textbooks every session are not always necessary when older siblings’ books could be reused by the younger ones, but, the inclusion of homework and class works in textbooks nowadays has totally rendered such textbooks useless for reuse by younger siblings.

It would be recalled that an On-Air Personality, OAP, Joy Bassey Ekpenyong, known as ‘Oyoyo Baby’, took to the Social Media, calling out Private Schools for indulging in such practices, at a time when the economic situation is unbearable.

She alleged the connivance of Publishers and Proprietors of Private Schools on milking Parents of their hard earned money with such practice,  which wasn’t the norm over a decade ago

Oyoyo Baby lamented that it is becoming unbearable for parents to shoulder the textbook burden amid current economic challenges in the country.

“Look at the textbooks my children used in the last academic session. Just look at these textbooks, they are all written in. The mathematics textbook is all written in and will render it useless for other children to use.

“We are spending money on these books, and now I’m planning to give them to Akara Seller because the textbooks are many and my house is not a library, and I can’t give them out to others because it is not useful for them as well,” she said.

The OAP, who recalled her days in school said, text books are passed to younger siblings.

“If you buy a textbook then, you could use it for years and pass it on to another family if your children no longer need it. But now, what are we seeing?

“It’s because school owners and publishers are exploiting parents, especially in private schools. If a parent has five children in private school, a child who just graduated from primary school cannot pass on the books to their younger sibling starting in primary school. Why is it like this?

“We shouldn’t keep buying books only to throw them away or give them to Akara sellers. Just look at these textbooks, especially the computer textbooks—is the concept of a computer changing every year? Yet, we are forced to buy new ones every year. These textbooks are of no use now, and I can’t even pass them on to someone else,” she pointed out.

In the same vein, Justina Osuala, another concerned parent, expressed her frustration about the costly and wasteful textbook system.

Osuala, a Mother of Two, who attends the same said: “I use to buy textbooks, but now I struggle to afford them. The problem is, the schools have adopted a system where you buy textbooks and do all the work in the textbooks, which won’t allow younger ones to use the textbooks their older siblings used, even though the curriculum remains the same.”

Another concerned parent, moshood Ijagbemi, complained bitterly about the exploitative strategies been used by private schools on Parents, by requiring New Textbooks every Term, despite minimal changes.

“They just asked the publishers to change the cover and add some unnecessary content, making it impossible for others to use the same book. As a result, we are forced to buy new textbooks every session, which are often barely used,” she stressed.

She recalled instances where her children’s textbook didn’t even reach halfway by the end of the session.

“It’s pointless, putting into consideration that the textbook becomes useless after one child finishes the class, and another child can’t use it. Yet, some teachers expect we, the parents, to be buying new textbooks, even when parent can’t afford it. In the olden days, textbooks are passed for younger ones for reuse and this cut down expenses on textbook”.

This practice has however become a norm among the Private Schools, prompting Abdulazeez Daisi, another aggrieved Parent to describe the situation as damaging to the income of parents, who have continue to grumble about the high cost of textbooks while rhe recommended books for pupils in Nursery and Primary Schools have become unaffordable.

Daisies said, hence, there is a need to review the policy of having workbooks in textbooks, which has made it impossible to pass over to other wards in a family.

It was gathered by this Magazine that this practice has sparked up controversies in most Schools during the Parents-Teachers Association,  PTA, Meetings, as Parents continue to complain bitterly about this practice, yet, these, Schools remain defiant to this practice.

Nse Faith, another concerned Mother narrated her ordeal in the School her Wards attends. She said the private school her children attends is worse, noting that, everything they do there is to generate money’.

Recalling a time she paid for textbooks, and some of the textbooks did not come, and the session finished.

“I informed the school that another of my daughters will use the textbooks since the other child did not use them; they said sorry, it is not possible. I am a New principal. You can settle that with the old one because I have to make my account balance so I can tender to the school owner.

“Schools and publishers are using parents to make money. Because the more textbooks we are buying, the more they publish and get their money.

“The more we are buying, the more they are selling. And the funny thing is that when you buy for the new session, the younger one will still buy theirs if it is still the same curriculum or syllabus. But if you buy and the Junior ones can still make use of it, then they won’t be selling more and will reduce the burden on parents to look for money to buy textbooks.”

Adeolu Ogunbanjo, Deputy National President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, repressed hat if students must learn, then they must learn well.

“Buying textbooks with workbooks is fine because that is the order of the day. Elsewhere, not just in the state, not just in Nigeria, but everywhere in the world, is the practice. Education is education. We need to also ensure that we move up to speed as parents,” she stated.

As regards working in major textbooks, Ogunbanjo said: “There should always be a provision for workbooks alongside major textbooks. Where that is not possible, then the second option will be to buy exercise books so students can do work in them.

“If you cannot buy a workbook, then buy exercise books so that teacher will give you one from the textbook where you will work”.

Enitan Alaba Adewunmi, Spokesperson, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, exonerated Public Schools from such practice, saying that, “For pupils in Lagos public schools, they don’t buy books as the books they are using are supplied by the Universal Basic Education.

“So, if you are  about parents complaining about books that can’t be transferred to other Wards, those are Private schools, not in Government Schools because they don’t buy books; the Government usually take care of that.”
