Malaysia Stops CNG-powered Vehicles Citing Safety Reasons

0

As  Nigeria vehicle owners are transiting from petrol aka PMS to the Compressed natural Gas, CNG, the government of Malaysia has a different approach to the issue.

The Malaysia government, announced few days ago that CNG will be phased our soon in the country, citing safety reasons.

The magazine reports that a CNG-powered vehicle exploded at the NIPCO filling station in Aduwawa, Benin, Edo State, on Wednesday leaving three people severely injured, including a motorist who suffered eye injuries.

The incident has further raised salient posers on the safety of CNG powered vehicles, even though the Nigerian government insists that it’s very safe to use the product, so long motorists adhere to safety measures.

Vehicle owners in Nigeria have been embracing CNG as the veritable alternative to petrol, to fuel their vehicles, due to the high cost of the latter.

Amidst the debate in Nigeria, the Asian country has fixed the first half of next year as deadline to phase out CNG also known as NGV.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had recently urged petrol consumers in the country to switch to CNG because of the daily rising cost of petrol following the removal of subsidy.

Since it came to office last year, the administration has increased the pump price of petrol by over 500 percent, to at least N1,200 per litre.

The development has forced many vehicle owners in the country to search for other energy alternatives such as CNG to power their vehicles.

Amidst the upbeat among car owners in Nigeria, Malaysia said the decision to phase CNG out is in the interest of the country and motorists.

According to Anthony Loke, the country’s Transport Minister steps are being taken to end  NGV-powered vehicles in few months.

He explained that the government took the action to ensure the safety of vehicle owners, stressing that the efforts have so far paid off because only a few vehicles in the country are being powered by CNG.

Loke said, “This measure prioritises the safety of road users and the public,” he said, adding that only about 44,383 NGV vehicles remain on the road, representing just 0.2 per cent of the nation’s motor vehicles, excluding motorcycles.

Loke noted that many NGV vehicles are dual-fuel operated, with kits installed between 1995 and 2014, and noted that the NGV tanks of these vehicles are reaching the end of their service life, typically set at 15 years.

President Tinubu had last month told motorists in the country to embrace the use of CNG because of its low price.

“Nigeria’s motorists can buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or equivalent gas per Standard Cubic Meter at N200. We have also introduced incentives for commercial motorists to convert from petrol to gas” free of cost,” Tinubu said during a meeting with stakeholders in the oil and gas sector In Aso Rock, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

We Saw Hell In Prison; No Food, Treated Like Hardened Criminals- Minor Protesters Reveal

0
Underaged or Minors Protesters

There are more revelations on the recently released minors who allegedly took part in the August #endbadgovernance protests in the country.

The magazine reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, ordered the release of over 100 minors after the backlash that trailed their arraignment in court last week.

The trial gained global attention after four teenage protesters collapsed in a federal high court in Abuja, where they were being tried for taking part in the last hunger protest in August this year.

Recall that many Nigerians were arrested by the security agencies for allegedly taking part in the nationwide protest, to press home their demands on the federal government to do something about the economic situation in the country.

Some of them, minors were arraigned in Abuja, the nation’s capital last week thus sparking global outrage against the government, which later ordered their release.

They were later handed over to their various state governors, who have promised to rehabilitate them and reunite them with their families.

Following their release, the protesters have started narrating their experience in the police cells where they were detained for over 90 days before they were brought to court last week

According to The Punch, the protesters were treated shabbily while in police custody, including denying them food for several days.

Those who spoke to the newspaper at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, where they are being checked and treated by a team of medical personnel, said they were starved for many days by the government officials.

“We saw hell; we suffered a lot,” one of the minors, Umar Ali, 15, said. “We sometimes stayed for three days without food. And even when we were given food, it was always not enough.”

Ali denied involvement in the protest saying he was arrested on his way to the market at Kwana Hudu in Ungoggo Local Government Area of the state, where he usually does menial jobs to sustain himself.

He added that they were kept in the dark while under custody, which he said affected some of them when they went for trial.

“We hardly saw sunlight in the place where we were kept, hence the reason why some of us could not see very well when we were brought to the court,” he said.

Another minor, Ibrahim Aliyu Musa, who was transferred from Kano to Abuja a day after his arrest, said he and others were kept in the same place with hardened criminals.

“I was among those that were kept in the same place with hardened criminals and we sometimes spent a number of days without food.

“The food was nothing to write home about, they were inadequate and tasteless. They served us beans in the morning, rice at lunch time and Gabza for dinner. Gabza is normally prepared for inmates due to their large number. So, we had to eat Gabza so as to keep body and soul moving,” Musa added.

Also narrating his ordeal, a 13-year-old boy, who said he was arrested at Gadon Kaya in Gwale Local Government Area, said he was accused of flying the Russian flag, which he denied doing.

“I was arrested on the August 15 and moved to Abuja the following day. We were kept at Abattoir SARS in Abuja. We were kept with hardened criminals for the number of days we were there,” he said.

Also, one of the released minors, Hassan Mohammed, a graduate of Economics from the Kampala University, described his experience in Kuje Prison as “not good at all”.

Mohammed said, “I was arrested on August 5 along Ahmadu Bello Way here in Kaduna. When they took us to the State Criminal Investigation Department, they asked why we were protesting and we explained.

“They took our statements and from there they took us to Abuja FCID, where we spent 18 days before they took us to Kuje Prison.

On how they were feeding while at the Kuje Prison, he added, “Honestly, it was terribly bad, not good at all. They gave us small portions of  garri and beans. It was a bad experience being in that place.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police has denied maltreating the protesters.

“We never maltreated or dehumanised the suspects. That’s not true. In fact, they were not kept with hardened criminals at all. There are many wrong narratives out there to undermine the credibility of the police,” Muyiwa Adejobi, the Froce spokesman said.

After meeting with the freed protesters in Aso Rcok, Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima said President Tinubu released them purely on compassionate ground, and not because the president was pressured to do so.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered their release on humanitarian grounds, giving them another chance to become responsible citizens,” Shettima said in a statement by his media aide  , Stanley Nkwocha.

Dangote Monopoly Recipe For Disaster, Petrol Marketers Tell Court As Battle Rages Between Them

0
Aliko Dangote

Top three petroleum marketers in the country have explained  that it would be wrong for the federal government to allow Dangote Refinery become a monopoly in the sector.

The marketers,  AYM Shafa Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited told a federal high court in Abuja, on Tuesday that it’s an anomaly for the government to allow Dangote Refinery become the sole distributor of petroleum products in the country.

According to the marketers, in a joint counter affidavit, they filed at the court, the development is a “recipe for disaster’ for the sector and the country at large.

Their response comes on the heels of a law suit filed by Dangote Refinery on September 6, 2024, against the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, and the three marketers.

Dangote, in the suit had prayed the court to stop NNPLC and the NMDPRA from issuing import licence to the marketers to import petroleum products into the country, saying such action would negate the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA.

According to Dangote, what NMDPRA should be doing is encouraging local refineries to grow in line with its mandate.

Reacting, the marketers said there is no proof that Dangote could produce enough fuel for the country, stressing that there would always be a shortfall for the marketers to fill.

The marketers said they need to augment what Dangote produce locally with import, anything contrary, they said portends serious danger for the country in terms of availability of petroleum products.

They argued that nothing in their business violates Section 317(9) of the PIA, adding that they are entitled to be issued an import licence by NMDPR having met .all the legal requirements for the issuance of such import licences.

They said further that the supply of petrol and determination of its price should not be solely determined by Dangote, noting that Nigerians and consumers will suffer if this is allowed to happen.

They insist that Dangote does not have enough products to last the country for 30 days contrary to its claim, stressing that the onus on the company is to show proof of this.

Part of what the marketers told the court: “The import licences lawfully and validly issued to the defendants did not in any way whatsoever, cripple the plaintiff’s business or its refinery.

“The import licenses issued to the defendants by the 1st defendant are in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, and other relevant laws,

“That in the event of any breakdown in or obstruction to the production chain of the plaintiff which stops it from producing Nigeria will be thrown into energy crises because it does not have the reserves that would last it for at least 30 days that it would need to order, pay for, freight and import refined products into tanks in Nigeria.

“That amidst the glaring absence of any credible and demonstrable proof that the plaintiff refines and supplies adequate petroleum products for the daily use/consumption of Nigerians, is a recipe for disaster in Nigeria’s energy sector.”

The magazine reported that the Chairman of Dangote refinery, and Africa’s Richest Man had during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu disclosed that the refinery had in its reserves over 500 million litres of petrol.

Dangote had earlier informed the president that the marketers had refused to purchase petrol from his company.

We Will Take Over Abia State In 2027, APC Chieftains Vow

Hon Chris Nkwonta

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Chieftains of the All Progressive Congress APC, in Abia State have reinstated the party’s resolve to wrestle power from the Labour Party come 2027.

Hon Chris Nkwonta, Member representing Ukwa West/East Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, High Chief Sylvanus Nwaji four time chairman of Ukwa West Council, Federal Commissioner representing Abia State on the NNDC Board, Eroba Dimgba and Chief Don Ubani, former Deputy Chief of Staff to the immediate past Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, spoke separately at a formal reception for over one thousand Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members who defected to the APC in the Obuzor mega Ward of Ukwa West on Tuesday November 5.

The Source reports that since the beginning of the second half of the year, the PDP in Abia State has been hit by several high profile defections, with the rival APC being the major beneficiary.

Some erstwhile Commissioners, top Government and party functionaries who played key roles in the immediate past PDP administration in the state, including the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chinedu Orji, have since  signed on for the APC from the PDP.

The coalition of such numerous former PDP lords into the APC was part of the reason why Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives audaciously, but controversially, declared two months ago that the APC is condemned to take over power in the State in 2027.

Only last month, Hon Nkwonta, the only House of Representatives member from the state elected on the platform of the PDP, alongside Chief Ubani, erstwhile Deputy chief of Staff to former Governor Ikpeazu, decamped to the rival APC.

Speaking while receiving the PDP decampees from the only oil producing Local Government of Abia State, leader of the APC in Obuzor and Ukwa West High Chief Nwaji, expressed happiness with the decision of the PDP members to join forces with APC.

Nwaji, a House of Representatives candidate in the 2023 general elections noted that the APC is poised to reclaim the top spot in the political equation of Abia state.

“Let me appreciate the decampees for their wise decision to join forces with the APC.

“My interaction with them before this public declaration has shown that they (decampees ) are ready and committed to supporting and growing APC not just in Abia State, but, also, in the entire South East Zone.

“As they are joining us today, I want to appeal to the party hierarchy at all levels to carry them along so that they will contribute their quota towards the APC controlling Abia State and the South-east in 2027.

“Our focus now is to build a formidable structure that ,will enable the APC  take over Abia state ,and consolidate its preeminent position at the centre .

“I want to warn the new members that there will be no room for divided loyalty, betrayal, and insincerity of purpose.

“If you know you are not going to give your all to the party, then you still have time to ship out now. We don’t want anything to distract us from wresting power in Abia in 2027.

“The Labour Party Government in the State has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that it can not be trusted to lift Abia and Abians up from the very low level that the PDP left them.

“APC is set on a redemption mission and by the grace of God, nothing is going to stop us in 2027” Nwaji stated.

On his own, Hon Nkwonta who was appointed Chairman, House Committee on the South East Development Commission as an immediate reward for joining APC from PDP, urged party members ,particularly the decampees to be focused and dedicated.

He assured that the APC will take its rightful position in Abia State come 2027.

“I call on every party member to remain focused and committed. In politics, there are bound to be distractions and disagreements.

“But the most important thing is for the people  not to be distracted. On my part, my decision to leave PDP and  join APC is for the public interest.

“My concern is about how to  collectively retrieve Abia State. Iam very optimistic that with the calibre of people ,in the party and their commitment ,APC will no doubt take over the state in 2027.

“Let me assure you that more dedicated people will be joining the Abia APC train any moment from now. The party will surely occupy its rightful position in Abia State.

Earlier, the NNDC Commissioner, Chief Dimgba, while expressing joy over the large number of those that decamped to the Party from the rival PDP, assured the new members of enough space in the APC to accommodate all.

He also enjoined  party  faithful to be focused on the task of taking over Abia State come 2027.
