The Senate has Sacked Danladi Umar, Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT.

The Senate on Wednesday invoked the provisions of Section157 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended for  Umar’s sack.

The sack of the CCT Chairman was upheld following the adoption of a motion on “Invocation of Provision of Section 157(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic as amended during plenary on Wednesday.

Senator Bamidele Opeyemi (APC- Ekiti) Leader of the Senate, moved the motion, saying that the CCT was saddled with sacred statutory responsibilities of maintaining high standard of morality in government business.

This, he said was to ensure that the actions and behaviours of public officers conform to the highest standards of public morality and accountability.

He said a statutory institution of such magnitude was expected to be an epitome of moral rectitude and should been seen to uphold virtues of integrity, probity and accountability .

He, however, said the conduct of Danladi Umar, who is the Chairman of the Tribunal has fallen short of the requisite standard of a public officer to conduct the affairs of such tribunal.

He said it was worrisome that the Senate has been inundated with series of petitions and allegations of corruption, misconduct against the Chairman through the Senate Committee on Ethics Code of Conduct and Public Petition .

This, he said had necessitated the 9th Senate to invite him to series of its investigative hearings in order to unravel circumstances surrounding those allegations.

According to him, Umar appeared before the Committee only once and thereafter avoided subsequent invitations.

He expressed concerned over the alleged Umar’s absenteeism from office for more than one month, without permission and recuse to his position.

Bamidele also expressed worry over the preponderance of corruption allegation , misappropriation and physical street brawl with a security man in the FCT vis-a-vis his current investigation by the EFCC, ICPC and the DSS .

“All these are tantamount to acts of negligence and gross misconduct, unbecoming of a Chairman of such. reputable Tribunal.

“Aware of the series of overwhelming allegations against the Chairman, President, Tinubu forwarded the name of Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello to the Senate for confirmation as the new Chairman of the Tribunal.

“And at the plenary sitting of the Senate on July, 4, his appointment was duly confirmed, hence the need for the erstwhile chairman to vacate the office for the substantive chairman to officially resume officer.

“Recalls that by virtue of the provisions of section 157 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended,

“Mr President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause or for misconduct.”

Bamidele added that the invocation of the afore-mentioned constitutional provision in this circumstance, seems to be the only way out to safeguard the sacred image of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

This , he said was in line with the resolve of the 10th Senate to uphold the rule of law and sustain the ideals of corporate governance structure in Nigeria.

He said the eventual removal of Umar from office would pave the way for the official resumption of Bello as the new substantive Chairman of the Tribunal.

Contributing, Deputy President of Senate,  Sen.Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) said the decision to invoke section 157 (1) to remove the CCT Chairman from office was a unanimous decision of the senate, adding that 84 senators endorsed his removal.

Chief Whip of the Senate,Sen. Mohammed Monguno(APC-Borno) collaborated the Deputy President of Senate, saying that the senate had meet the constitutional requirements to effect the removal of the CCT Chairman.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio in his remarks said the senate had formed the quorum to effect the removal.

He said opportunities had been presented to Umar to defend himself but he naver showed up.

Akpabio said his activities was unbecoming of a Public Servant having fought with a lady at a plaza in Abuja, the nation’s Capital.

Akpabio mandated the Clerk of Senate, Ben Akabueze to communicate to President Bola Tinubu resolution of Senate for necessary action.

Gov. Okpebholo Cracks Down On Market Unions

In a bid to arrest the arbitrary increases in the prices of food and essential commodities, the Edo State Governor,  Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Wednesday, November, 20, suspended the activities of all market unions in the State.

A statement issued by Fred Itua, the Governor’s media aide , also mandated security agencies in the State to crack down on defaulters of the blanket ban.

Governor Okpebholo expressed deep concern that credible intelligence has indicated that the unwholesome activities of the market unions and their leaderships are the major factors driving the astronomical increases in the prices of food items at the various markets in the State.

The Governor noted that the market unions have been in the destructive habits of preventing farmers and other local dealers on food stuffs from freely discharging and selling their produce.

He stated that the market Union authorities arbitrarily act as middle persons inflecting prices far beyond the reach of the ordinary people.

Governor Okpebholo warned that as a responsible Government, it will not sit by idly and watch a few greedy and unscrupulous elements subject innocent residents to untold hardship.

“The attention of the State Government has been drawn to the disturbing activities of market unions in the State.

“Reports abound that the executives of these unions either outrightly prevent farmers from disposing of their wares directly to consumers at the markets or arbitrarily fix prices of these staple foods to the detriment of low income earners and generally the citizens of the State.

“Their actions have ultimately led to an astronomical rise in the prices of staple food in the State, thereby making life unbearable for the common Edo man.

“Edo State Government views this action with serious concern and considers it extortionist in nature, which should not be allowed to thrive.

“While Edo state Government appreciates the role of market traders and their contributions to the economy of our dear State, it will not however ,serve as justification to allow a few individuals, under the guise of market unions executives and for their selfish reasons to continue to hold the entire state to ransom through their selfish and extortionist activities.

“Following from the foregoing, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has approved the suspension of the activities of all market unions in Edo state with immediate effect.

“Security agents have been put on alert and any person or group who decides to flout this directive will be held accountable”, part of the statement reads.

Hours after the death and interment of Ambassador Ibrahim Zakari, a former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, a tragedy worse than the DG’s death hit his family.

His son, Mubarak, 34, gave up on life and also died a few hours after he was buried. Mubarak who took part in his father’s funeral suddenly died hours later and left his family frozen in shock.

Mubarak was the youngest son of the Ambassador who died at the age of 81. Family sources said he was, particularly, close to his father, and may have died of shock and disbelief over his death.

Ambassador Zakari was the DG of the NIA between 1995 and 1998. Before then, he has held positions in Nigeria’s foreign affairs and anti-terrorism efforts.

Funeral rites for Mubarak has been held in Katsina just like that of his late father.

“I Was Not Drunk, Not Barred From Villa” – Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Adesina Soyooye

Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has denied he was drunk on the day he went to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to receive the Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria.

An independent investigative Journalist, Jackson Ude, had alleged that Wike was drunk, and so intoxicated when he received  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the airport. Flowing from that, Ude claimed that Wike was subsequently barred from entering the Villa for the Indian PM’s reception and discussions between the two leaders – Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu and India’s Modi.

Ude said he got his information from a reliable, but anonymous, Security officer attached to the Presidential Villa.

Many people had wondered  why Wike was conspicuously absent at the Villa during the Indian PM’s visit. The Minister withdrew after receiving the PM and escorting him from his Hotel to the Villa Sunday morning.

But in response, Wike has denied all the above. He said he was neither drunk nor intoxicated when he received Modi at the Airport.  And he also denied  that he was barred from entering the Villa over his alleged drunk state as he was the one who escorted Modi to the Villa on Sunday.

Wike who responded through his Media Aide, Lere Olayinka, said he stuck to the roles given to him by the President to play, and withdrew thereafter.

The statement signed by Olayinka reads in part:

“Fact is, the FCT Minister led the Prime Minister to his hotel, from the Airport and it was from the hotel that he (Wike) led the Prime Minister to the Presidential Villa on Sunday morning, where his duty ended.

“Up till now, Jackson Ude is still spinning lies to defend his initial lies. But for us who know his antecedents, we will not dignify him henceforth.

“After all, this same Jackson Ude said in many tweets that the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, had fled Nigeria, through Niger Republic. He even accused the Minister of State of Defense, Bello Matawalle of helping Yahaya Bello to escape to Niger Republic.

“However, the same Yahaya Bello that Jackson Ude said had fled Nigeria showed up at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on September 18, 2024.

“How the same man Jackson Ude claimed ‘Matawalle mobilized eight military personnel to escort to Niger Republic via Kebbi State, through the border town of lllela, in two dark-tinted Hilux pickups and a Land Cruiser’ was at the EFCC office on September 18, he (Ude) has not explained.

“Rather, he has jumped to peddling other lies against high-profile Nigerians, the latest being the FCT Minister.

“As usual, now that we have released pictures of the FCT Minister in his hotel with the Indian Prime Minister on Saturday and on Sunday morning at the Presidential Villa, Jackson Ude, will try to spin more lies to defend his initial lies. But like I have said, we won’t be bothered.”

On a number of occasions, rumours had made the rounds with allegations that Wike has a thing or two going for him with alcohol, an allegation he has consistently denied and dismissed as tissue of lies.

Osun Govt Decries Harassment Of Officials By State Police Command

By Ayodele Oni

Osun State Government has decried persistent harassment of officials of the state government on partisan motivation by men if the state police command.

The condemnation is coming on the heels of  alleged shooting of another appointee of Governor Ademola Adeleke by the police over a civil matter.

The State Government condemned what it described as “the shooting to near death in police custody of the Chairman of Osun Transport Management System, Iyanda Alowonle, over a domestic matter.”

This was contained in a statement by Kolapo Alimi, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment on Tuesday night.

The statement disclosed that “Alowonle is presently on life support at the Intensive Care Unit of the Osun State Teaching Hospital after a gunshot wound in the abdomen while in the custody of the police at Osogbo.”

Reacting to the allegation in a statement, the acting Police Public Relations Officer for the Osun Command, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, claimed that Iyanda was shot while trying to escape from custody.

The commissioner’s statement added that “Video clips of Alowonle in handcuffs and under interrogation circulating in the media space dispelled any excuse that the park chairman was trying to escape. The fact that he was shot in the abdomen as video from his hospital bed confirmed proved that he was shot at close range with intent to eliminate him.

“Interactions between the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the State Governor, Mr Samuel Ojo, and the Head of Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Moses Lohor provided direct proof that the incident was premeditated to murder Mr Alowonle.

“We also note that the issue that generated the purported arrest was a civil matter, not criminally related to have warranted the involvement of Mr Moses Lohor, the head of the Anti-Kidnapping squad except for the repeat of a recent pattern of police harassment of officials of the state government on partisan motivation.

“The programmed attempted murder of Mr Alowonle is just one in the series of shootings and attacks on officials of the state by the head of anti-kidnapping squad who regularly acted with impunity and who has not hidden his vow to eliminate supporters of the state government.

“As we summoned several meetings to calm frayed nerves today, we struggled hard to stop reprisal attacks against police establishments across the state due to what the public now see as police partisan conduct in breach of the law.

“We call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Mr Moses Lohor, the Head of the Anti- Kidnapping Squad, for his wilful act of attempted murder. We demand police impartiality and commitment to rule of law without fixation on partisan considerations.”

Shedding light on the incident, the police dpokesman, Giwa-Alade explained that Iyanda had initially been arrested alongside some associates on Monday over allegations of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and malicious damage.

According to him, the police received a petition against Alowonle, where he was accused of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and malicious damage, adding that the petition was submitted to the Commissioner of Police and referred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for investigation.

Acting on credible intelligence, Giwa-Alade said police operatives moved to Ring Road, Osogbo, where the suspect and his cohorts were reportedly planning to attack the complainant, saying that on sighting the police, the suspects opened fire but were eventually subdued

Nine suspects, including Alowonle, were arrested at the scene. However, as they were being transported, supporters of the suspect ambushed the police, forcibly rescuing him and four others, who all escaped while still in handcuffs,” he said.

Giwa-Alade further disclosed that the police traced the suspects to a hideout in the Suzzy area of Oke Baale, Osogbo, where Iyanda was rearrested.

During a search of his vehicle, a Barrett pistol, six rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and an expanded empty shell were recovered. He made another attempt to escape during the search but was subdued and shot in the process. He is currently receiving treatment and is responding.”

NLC Strike

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Sokoto State Government, on Tuesday, November 19, reassured its commitment to paying the new minimum wage to its workforce.

This is just as the leadership of the organized labour in the State sued for calm and patience on the part of the workers.

The Deputy Governor, Idris Mohammed Gobir, who revealed Government’s position at an interactive session with the Media, however called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour  Congress, NLC, to avail Government its proposal on the templates for the implementation of the minimum wage .

A statement  from Comrade Garba Mohammed, Media aide to the Deputy Governor, said that labour’s position will assist the Government in coming out with a harmonized system of implementation.

The. Deputy Governor, according to the  statement, made the appeal during a meeting with the leadership of the organized labour.

The NLC chairman in the State, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungul, assured workers that all necessary efforts are being made to conclude discussions on the new minimum wage payment.

While lauding the State Government for so far displaying sincerity of purpose in the entire negotiation, also, informed that the NLC will be submitting its proposed templates to the Government very soon.

The Source reports that the national leadership of the Organized labour, penultimate week, issued December 1, 2024, as the dateline for all negotiations regarding the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage to be concluded.

The NLC ultimatum is believed to be a direct response to the alleged unwillingness of some State Governments to implement the wage agreement reached in August this year between the Federal Government and the organized labour.

With many States already paying the minimum wage to its workforce effective October, the remaining ones appear to be under intense pressure to avoid any confrontation with the organized labour.

Tinubu’s Reforms Are Working; Obi, Atiku Have No Good Plans For Nigeria

0
Doyin Okupe

Doyin Okupe, former Director General of the Labour Party has disclosed that the party and its presidential candidate in the 2023 election had no clear direction on how to govern Nigeria.

Okupe, who stepped down in 2022 as the Director General of Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation insist that Obi had no policy document on how to run the affairs of the country if he was elected.

The former Presidential spokesman made this known on Monday, according to the news agency of Nigeria, NAN, which quoted him as saying that President Bola Ahmed  Tinubu’s reforms policy is working for the country.

According to him, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, plans on how to run the country cannot be appropriate considering the current situation,  Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda “ is the most credible,” he said.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda he (Tinubu) brought is one that can address, and is addressing, the country’s current challenges,” he stated.

Adding,“Tinubu has a better policy document than any of his two rivals during the 2023 presidential election,” said Mr Okupe, who acknowledged that Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is an “experienced, knowledgeable and thorough-bred politician.”

“I know that for a fact that he also came with a testament that would have been binding on him and Nigerians. But when you put the testament side-by-side with the current reality on ground, it is not applicable.

He said further, “So the premise Atiku placed his testament on was sinking, and it can’t work,” he said. “As for Peter Obi of the Labour Party, he did not give any document to Nigerians that he was going to work on.”

“In the Labour Party, we didn’t have a document that we could adopt as a policy document for what was going on. All we were saying was that we wanted to take Nigeria from consumption to production; good rhetorics, but it was not grounded either in policy development or principle application.”

Upon his ascendance to power in May 29, 2023 President Tinubu announced as one of his cardinal policies the removal of fuel subsidy.

The administration also floated the naira as part of his reform agenda to transform the country.

Tinubu’s critics, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo however slammed the policies for being too hasty and unilateral, because according to them, the president did not consult widely before taking the very critical decisions.

Also, the International Monetary Fund, IMF, has criticized the administration’s major policy thrusts.

They insist that the not-well-thought-out policies have plunged the country into a serious economic crisis with the attendant hardship being currently faced by not a few Nigerians.
