Drama As Yahaya Bello Controls Crowd In Court, Pleads Not Guilty

Yahaya Bello in Court

By Adesina Soyooye

The arraignment of the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, at an Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday, November 27, had all the trappings of the drama which, for months, followed his final surrender.

In Court, he was not only the accused, he was the “traffic controller”. What the scores of security personnel  who stacked out inside and outside the Court could not accomplish, he did.

Bello, after a cat and mouse game with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was finally arraigned before the Honourable Justice Maryam Anenih on about a 20-count charge bordering on corruption, fraud, money laundering and more.

He, allegedly, committed the offences during his two-term tenure as the Governor of Kogi State.

For months, Bello, had snubbed all invitations extended to him by the EFCC, as well as Court summons. He disappeared into thin air, to the embarrassment of the EFCC.

But on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Bello drove himself to the EFCC Headquarters accompanied by his Lawyers. His appearance this time was different from that of weeks ago when he was accompanied by the Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, in a convoy of SUVs. But to the shock of Nigerians, the EFCC authorities allowed the man they had declared wanted to leave without as much as talking to him, not to talk of arresting him.

They gave as reason that he breached protocol by coming in a convoy of SUVs with Governor Ododo in tow. Yet, that same day, in the night, they went to the Governor’s Lodge in Abuja in search of Bello. There was, allegedly, a shoot-out. They retreated.

But all that came to an end when Bello was arrested as he arrived the EFCC Headquarters on Thursday by the Commission’s Chief Security Officer. He was promptly taken into custody, kept overnight and arraigned in Court.

However, Drama accompanied the arraignment. Dressed in an immaculate white flowing babariga and beaming with smiles, he was continously hailed by his hundreds of supporters who took over the Court. The crowd was much, the noise too, that the Honourable Justice Anenih walked out of the Court. That was when Bello took over.

Like the Commander of his troops, he ordered his supporters to leave the Court. One by one, they quietly left. And to make sure none of them entered again, he took a chair and sat by the door. That restored calm, and thereafter, the Honourable Judge  re-entered the Court.

Expectedly, Bello pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him-worth a whopping N110 billion.

Kano Anti Corruption Agency Bursts Warehouse Hoarding Palliatives

By Ayodele Oni

For hoarding goods meant for distribution to people, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Agency has sealed a warehouse where palliatives rice worth more than N1 billion was being hoarded.

The facility, which is located on Ring Road in Nasarawa Local Government Area, was sealed on Tuesday during an operation led by the Executive Chairman of the agency, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado.

The bags carrying the rice inscribed with President Bola Tinubu’s picture with and written:”Ramadan Kareem” believed to be meant for distribution as palliatives during last year’s Ramadan fast.

Rimin-Gado explained after the operation that the warehouse was stockpiled with 28 trucks of the rice allegedly diverted by some individuals found re-bagging the commodity.

According to him, the rice was re-bagged into different brands meant to be diverted and sold in different markets in the state.

He said one person had been arrested in connection with the matter, while investigation would commence to fish out those behind the scam.

The executive chairman pointed out that diversion of the commodity is an illegal and corrupt act which would not be condoned by the anti-graft agency.

“In a nutshell, this is a clear form of corruption because this is a property meant for the public. Considering the hardship we have today, somebody has the liver to come and start rebagging it.

“We recovered a re bagging machine for repacking and re bagging rice meant for the public.

“So, we are here based on investigation activities. We are armed with our search warrant, arrest warrant and court order.

“Thorough investigation will continue to uncover those behind it. For now, we have arrested one and we will make sure we uncover those behind it and forestall these kinds of activities.”

Customs Saves Embarrassed Nigeria,   Hands Over Stolen Vehicles To Canada

Nigerian Customs Hands Over Stolen Vehicles To Canada

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS,  on Tuesday November 26,2024, saved Nigeria an embarrassment. By that, the NSC showed the International Community that the country does not condone evil.

On Thursday, the NCS officially  handed over about 21 imported, but stolen vehicles, to the Canadian authorities.

This is just the Comptroller General CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, regretted that the West African sub region has assumed the notorious status of the destination of choice for stolen vehicles from across the world.

The CGC, while addressing the media at the event which held in Lagos, also informed that the vehicles, most of which are exotic , were confirmed stolen by relevant international and partner security agencies such as the Interpol.

According to the him, West Africa has remained the hub for a thriving network that specializes in receiving stolen vehicles from Europe, North  America, Australia and other parts of the globe.

“Over the past months, we have intensified our operations against vehicle smuggling and trafficking syndicates operating within our borders.

“West Africa has emerged as a notable destination hub in the global stolen vehicle trade network which extends from Europe and North America to as far as South America and Australia, according to INTERPOL reports.

“This challenge is particularly acute in Nigeria. National Bureau of Statistics data shows that between 2013 to 2015, only 54% of stolen vehicles were recovered, highlighting the scale and sophistication of this criminal enterprise.

“The growing incidence of stolen vehicles finding their way into our region has become a matter for serious concern, as it not only undermines our legitimate automotive market ,but also strains our security infrastructure.

“Recent intelligence from international law enforcement agencies further confirms that our region has become a preferred destination for internationally stolen vehicles ,a trend that not only tarnishes Nigeria international image ,but also impacts our economy through substantial revenue losses and increased security spending .

“The economic implications of this criminal enterprise are far-reaching and deeply concerning .

“Beyond damaging our legitimate automotive trade sector, and international business relationships, it undermines President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms agenda that aims to position Nigeria as a trusted hub for international commerce”,  the CGC noted .

Further speaking he informed that the Service has been forced to divert substantial resources towards enhanced border management, as well as rigorous verification processes to combat the menace of smuggling and other criminal activities on Nigeria’s borders.

These scarce resources, he insisted, would have been channelled into such necessary projects such as trade facilitation initiatives and economic growth programmes.

“The criminal activities not, he noted, not only strains the Service operational capacity ,but also threatens Government’s efforts towards attracting foreign investment, and establishing Nigeria as reliable partner in global trade .

” In response to the these challenges , CGC Adeniyi , stated that the NCS has initiated Operation Hot Wheels which is primarily aimed at stridently enforcing some initiatives targeted  at disrupting the operations of criminal networks involved in smuggling stolen vehicles into the country.

“The operations primary objectives include identifying and intercepting stolen vehicles ,dismantling trafficking networks and strengthening international cooperation in combating transnational vehicle theft .

“This multi-agency approach was designed to leverage the unique capabilities and jurisdictional advantages of each participating organization.

“Through enhanced intelligence gathering ,and strategic deployment of resources ,our officers at various Commands have successfully intensified surveillance operations while ensuring minimal disruption to legitimate trade flows”, CGC Adeniyi noted .

According to him ,the vehicles handed over to Canadian authorities were duely intercepted as smuggling items ,and certified by INTERPOL and other international agencies as being stolen from Canada .

“Through collaboration with Operation Screen West Africa OSWA and INTERPOL,two of these vehicles were confirmed stolen from Canada .

“The exotic vehicles such as Lamborghini Huracan ,Rolls Royce ,Mercedes AMT GT ,Range Rover Spot with a combined value of over N5 billion, were seized from various seaports across the country.”

My People, You Are My Rock, With You, I Have Excelled – Governor Ademola Adeleke

Governor Ademola Adeleke

“TEXT OF STATE BROADCAST BY OSUN STATE GOVERNOR, SENATOR ADEMOLA ADELEKE TO MARK THE SECOND YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ADMINISTRATION ON NOVEMBER, 27TH, 2024”

I convey my deep appreciation for your strong support and prayers. From November 27th, 2022 to date, Osun residents have demonstrated unshaken faith in our government. Your prayers for me and my team have strengthened us significantly. Your regular counseling have enhanced our intentional drive to deliver on good governance.

My people, you are well aware of what Osun was on and before we took over two years ago. We all recall the pains and sufferings of the public servants and pensioners. We remember the huge infrastructure and policy deficit in transportation, health, education, water, ICT, environment, agriculture and commerce and industry. We cannot forget in a hurry the deep gap between the state leadership and the people.

To revive the state and deliver on good governance, my administration launched out with a five-point agenda. We targeted specific areas of needs of the people which form the major components of the clearly defined agenda. The goal principally was to address the aspirations and immediate needs of our people.

In line with norms of accountability and responsibility to the electorate, I am obligated to render my stewardship midway into the life of our administration. It is, therefore, with praises to God Almighty and the universe that I address you on major advances our admnistration has already recorded across the sectors.

We pursue a preventive health care policy which places emphasis on access to health care. By today, our administration has upgraded 200 primary health care centers out of almost 400 with solar power, boreholes and medical materials. We are now shifting attention to the six general hospitals for upgrade and refurbishing.

In the same vein, we conducted two major Imole medical outreach with over 100, O00 beneficiaries. The third edition is upcoming, even as we have enrolled 29,000 pensioners in the health insurance scheme to bankroll their Healthcare.

On water supply, we developed three structure plans of immediate, short and long term template to resolve the acute water shortage inherited in 2022. Immediately, we delivered 332 boreholes across the 332 political wards in the state. Another 332 is ongoing. Simultaneously, we commenced the rehabilitation of the water works in major towns by relaying the rusted pipes laid in early 70s. Additionally, the abandoned 10 mini-water works are being revived while the project for Ora water scheme is also under implementation.

In the agricultural sector, we started the farm mechanization plan by purchasing 31 tractors in the first phase. Farm inputs were regularly distributed and I am launching the youth agropreneur programme across the 30 local governments and the area councils. We are reviving the farm settlements. We are implementing the new Cocoa and Cashew expansion initiatives.

For the education sector, the University of Ilesa has become a reality with take off grants and accredited courses. Rehabilitation of its internal roads are now ongoing. For the Osun State University, four abandoned projects were completed and a new anatomy laboratory was started and completed by our administration. We rehabilitated 99 secondary schools, restarted the upgrade of the six technical colleges and are about to issue letters of appointment to new teachers.

For the public service sector, our government has paid about 12 billion pension debt in two years compared with 11 billion paid by the opposition for its 12 years in the government of the state. We restored normalcy within the public service with permanent secretaries and regular promotion exercises. Half salary debt is being paid in phases, and a new minimum wage has just been approved for the state workers. Ours is an openly pro-workers government.

In Science and Technology, we gave Osun its first ICT policy, innovations policy and Startup legal framework. We introduced the first digital economy agenda for the state. Implementation of these policies and programmes are ongoing.

For the power sector, our government is finalizing a policy and legal frameworks for the electricity market system. With the devolution of the power sector, the passage of the electricity bill into law in Osun state will enable us to regulate stakeholders in the sector. An electricity regulatory commission will be set up to license generators of powers among others.

My dear people of Osun state, our administration has constructed over 120 kilometers of roads across the state. Several inter- state and intra-city roads completed are to be commissioned during this 16 days anniversary. Two major flyovers are also progressing to completion at Osogbo while works are progressing at the Ile Ife Flyover and Ilesa dualization.

I have redirected our efforts and plan at the completion of Iwo-Osogbo road. We have added the dualisation of Odoori – Adeeke road inside Iwo to be executed in two phases. The first phase will reach Post -Office and Oluwo Palace while the second phase will take off from Post Office to Adeeke Junction.

Our government has enhanced the local economy, not just through its local content policy, we have also expanded access to financing for artisans and small businesses through the cooperative societies. Several millions of naira have been advanced to the state cooperative movement as revolving loans, the first time since the First Republic. We encouraged creation of ward-based artisans cooperative societies across the 332 political wards. Another millions of naira have been advanced to the 332 business groups as revolving loans. During this anniversary, another set of small businesses will get microcredit cheques. Osun money is truly revolving within Osun State economy.

I want our people to note for the record that for all our projects and programmes, we did not obtain any loan. We only block leakages in the state finance and employ local content to moderate project cost and enforce high standards. We never discriminate on inherited projects and we never sack any contractors engaged by our predecessor. We run an open transparent government.

For the second half of our government, I reassure all sons and daughters of Osun State that the government under my leadership will complete all ongoing projects. We will continue to address the infra and social needs of our people. We will strike a balance between hard and soft infrastructure.

Going forward, we will deepen our consultation and interactive mechanism with the citizenry. As we have acted only in public interest in the last two years, we will sustain our responsiveness and respect for the wills and aspirations of our people.

Therefore, I invite you to join me as we commence the anniversary with town hall meetings and commissioning of projects and programmes.

Once again, I thank Osun elders, sons and daughters for your support and prayers. I remain your Governor who is ever committed to service to the high and the low, to the poor and the rich, and to all our citizens and residents.

I thank you for listening.

Two Years After, Gov Adeleke Says He Has Reconnected With Osun People

Ademola Adeleke - Osun State Governor
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.

By Ayodele Oni

Today, the blind can see, the deaf can hear, and the crippled is jumping up joy over Adeleke’s steller performance

Exactly this day, in 2022, Senator Ademola Adeleke was sworn in as the sixth executive Governor of Osun state after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) Goyega Oyetola who was seeking a second term.

At start, it was a rough path for Governor Adeleke who had earlier, controversially, lost the Governorship to Oyetola during the first contest. As expected in a democracy, the opposition gave him sleepless nights as virtually all programmes and policies he embarked upon were faulted, making the people to be doubting whether they’ve not entered a one chance vehicle.

Not deterred by the mirage of criticisms from opposition, the Ede-born politician from the popular Adeleke family, whose father, uncle had earlier played similar role in the past forged ahead.

Today, the blind can see in Osun, the deaf do hear while the lame is jumping up for joy. From the provision of infrastructure, to regular payment of salaries, gratuity to pensioners and respect for the traditional institution, Governor Adeleke has cut an image of an achiever who is in politics to make the people happy.

As part of activities to commemorate his administration’s mid term, Adeleke distributed cheques worth N1.9 Billion to retired Civil Servants in Osun State.

Elated Adeleke declared at the ceremony that “Today, we are gathered here for the distribution of bond cheques to our contributory pensioners.

“As part of our determination to settle pension indebtedness, today we are paying out a total sum of One Billion, Nine Hundred and Ninety Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Eight Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eight Seven Naira (N1,999, 908,887.33). This is a combination for both state and local governments.

“I am happy to inform our senior citizens and the general public about what each administration from former Governor Rauf Aregbesola to date has paid in the pension sector.

“Former Governor Aregbesola’s payment as at 2018 was a total sum of Seventeen Billion, One Hundred and Fifty Two Million, Six Hundred and Sixty Two Thousand,  Three Hundred and Fifty One Naira (N17,152,662,351.26).

“Former Governor Oyetola’s payment as at 2022 was a total sum of Seventeen Billion, Two Hundred and Fifty Five Million, Four Hundred and Twenty Four Thousand, Seven Hundred and Eight Naira (N17,255,424,708.51).

“The total for the two previous administrations under a 12 year period was Thirty Four Billion, Four Hundred and Eight Million, Eighty Seven Thousand and Fifty Naira Naira ( N34,408,087,059.77)

“For our administration in the last two years plus what we are paying out today,  the total payment is the sum of Twenty Two Billion, Six  Hundred Seventy One Million, Two Hundred and Seventeen Thousand, Eight Hundred and Ninety Three Naira (N22,671,217,893.24). While for local government pension stand at N25 billion. Making out payment in two years to over N47 billion.

“Our administration paid almost 70 percent within two years of what the former APC administration paid in 12 years.

“We added a life changing policy, the enrolment of pensioners in the health insurance scheme. This has eased access to  health care for our senior citizens. Our love, care and support for pensioners is therefore not a political gimmick. It is about doing the right thing.

It was celebration galore for the physically challenged persons in the state that thronged venue of the commissioning of the roundabout in Osogbo as they came to display wheel chairs distributed for them to enhance their mobility.

Various groups were at the ceremony to praise Governor Adeleke for the two years feat of his administration. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who commissioned the project promised to continue to give support for the administration as long as it continues to meet People’s expectations.

Obasanjo pointed out that “Despite that he is dancing, he concentrates on his duties as Governor, which has made him to perform more than his predecessors within two years. I will continue to support you.”

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues at the sixth Senate that graced the occasion, Dino Melaye who sang praises in honour of the governor, noted with satisfaction the development strides in Osun state since assumption of Adeleke as Governor.

The administration has also moved to approved the new minimum wage for civil servants in the state with a promise to them to always be a workers’ friendly governor.

In a broadcast to mark the second year anniversary on Wednesday, Governor Adeleke stated that ” I am aware of what Osun was before I took over. Bad roads, dilapidated structure, flaw education, agriculture and commerce. There was a deep gap between the leadership and people.”

In the area of health, the administration has been able to make people have access to health with the provision of bore holes and solar powered lights to 212 health Centres, while emphasis is now on the six general hospitals.

To encourage mechanized farming in the state, 31 tractors have been purchased by the administration in addition to provision of farm inputs for farmers. The administration plans to bring back the farm settlements while youth agro preneur will soon come up.

The new University in Ilesa has been assisted to fully take off while the one in Osogbo is enjoying work on four new projects ongoing.

The governor disclosed that not less than 120 kilometers of road have been completed. He made a revelation that since the administration started, it has not borrowed any form of loan. “What we do is that we block leakages, and explore local content in executing projects. All contractors inherited from previous administration are still in site.”

On plans for the remaining two years, Governor Adeleke stated that “we plan to complete all ongoing projects, address needs of our people by reopening consultations with them.”

OPINION: Reuben Abati Was In Error

By Steve Osuji

The bully in the house: Dr. Reuben Abati is a public intellectual of no mean repute. A brilliant mind, a well-read fellow, a columnist,  editorialist and lately, a news talk show host on Arise Television. For full disclosure, we were both denizens of the famous Rutam House, home to The Guardian newspapers stable.

In the early 1990s, he was on the editorial board while yours truly was Assistant Editor with the weekly journal,  The African Guardian. This was over 30 years ago.

Reuben is in the news again.  Yes, he trended not quite long ago when he openly  (on live show) upbraided a younger correspondent filing a report,  for calling him by his first name, Reuben. He insisted that he was Dr Reuben Abati to the reporter and not simply Reuben.

All entreaties to Abati that the universal convention in broadcasting is that nigh everyone is on first name basis, never sank in. He insisted that it must be his way: that he must be addressed with the full complements of his honorifics, including his first and surname. He bullied his colleagues to play by his rule. And so it has been till now.

NEGATIVE STEREOTYPE OF NDIGBO: Reuben has been trending again since last weekend.  He had what may be described as a faux pas or a Freudian slip, even. But he won’t admit it, not to mention apologise.

During the Arise Tv Morning Show last Friday Reuben had started off about Ndigbo of the southeast of Nigeria being industrious; including the jaded and patronising fable about Igbo being at every corner of the  earth and that wherever there’s not an Igbo person, people are to flee because such a place may not be habitable.

Then Reuben went on to present what he calls the flipside of the Igbo tale: which is that free as Igbo are to live in other people’s land, especially  Lagos, they don’t sell land to non-Igbo people in the southeast.

Reuben supported his assertion by recounting what’s obviously an anecdotal tale told at a public function in Lagos by late Chief TOS Benson, First Republic Minister of Information. Benson,  according to Reuben,  told an audience how in his old age, he wanted to build a house for his wife (and daughter) who was an Igbo woman but her people refused claiming they don’t sell their ancestral land to outsiders. To  Reuben, this is enough proof that Igbo don’t sell land to outsiders and he went on to flippantly draw negative conclusions about  Ndigbo and their relationship with other Nigerians.

Abati’s single-story position and negative stereotyping of Igbo race of course caused much ruckus on the internet. And Reuben trended wildly, with many of his critics actually going overboard and detailing his voracious appetite for wives among other unrelated matters.

On the show the following morning, Reuben’s younger co-host Ojinika Okpe had called attention to Reuben’s trending, asking if he had anything to say. This innocuous request, which is normal in the practice seemed to have brought out the beast in Reuben. He yelled, he raved, he quaked, trying to shutdown the young lady for daring to review a trending story emanating from yesterday’s programme.

“If people are suffering from selective hearing, that’s  their problem. .. Nobody should tell me any nonsense,”  Reuben growled, unable to manage his anger on live television.

“It’s our duty to present the other side, a whole tribe cannot be judged by one man’s experience,”  Ojinika managed to quip to a now raving Reuben.  But Reuben was adamant, and arrogant in his own supposed infallibility, insisting he has “no nonsense duty”  to any one. His colleagues and co-host watched the drama, seemingly petrified. Even the quick-witted Rufai Oseni couldn’t find his voice.

One is shocked that Reuben seems to lack some of the basic ethos and etiquette of journalism. Just like the first name convention mentioned above,  journalism thrives on some basic tenets.  The right of reply code and the need to allow readers and listeners some space is one.

Young Ojinika seems to know these basics. She gave Reuben an opportunity to ‘redeem’ himself, so to speak, and address the obvious questions of profiling and generalisation at issue here which raised the ire of a large segment of Reuben’s viewers. No educated person, how much more an intellectual would make such sweeping statement in the public space. It’s an open assault on the sensibilities of a whole race. It’s like asserting in public that Yoruba  are tribalistic on account of one or two experiences. That would amount stereotyping that borders on hate.

That Igbo don’t sell land to outsiders has no basis in truth or fact as many commentators have revealed. Reuben has no personal experience of the matter and he probably has done no checks of his own.

TOS Benson’s tale that Reuben based his opinion upon sounds queer because no man returns to build a house  for his wife in her father’s house. You may build a house for your in-laws, but not for your wife. She’s   never going to return to his father’s house to live. That’s an anomaly in Igbo land.

Besides, in Igbo villages and rustic communities,  daughters are not entitled to inherit landed properties. A wife inherits from her husband and not her father; especially in family land matters. This probably explains why TOS Benson was denied a land by his in-laws to build for his wife. It’s unheard of in Igboland. Perhaps TOS was tired of marrying his wife and tried to return her back to her father by stealth!

LAND IS ECONOMICS/BUSINESS: It’s shocking that Reuben would parrot what’s obviously motor part talk on a global platform such as Arise Tv. It is even more troubling that he can’t discern that land anywhere is governed by economics and not tribal sentiments.  And economics and business are blind to race or tribe. No man calls a meeting of umunna before he sells his land – even his ancestral land. You need money and the price is right,  you close the deal. Most men would sell even their so-called ancestral burial grounds if approached with offers they can’t refuse.

Today, land agents like PWAN have acres of land across the southeast they desperately seek to sell.

REUBEN’S FREUDIAN SLIP: Therefore, to insist that Igbo don’t sell land to outsiders is not only  negative stereotyping, it’s  a form hate speech apparently emanating from an inherent envy for the Igbo. If there wasn’t a deep seated angst about Igbo in Reuben, he wouldn’t be quaking and raving about a simple matter he could have made a joke of the following day. Surely, not many are comfortable with Igbo buying and developing swathes of Lagos.  But again, how would Lagos look and what would a Reuben say if Ndigbo decide not to invest in Lagos and rather invest only in the southeast? That too is economic decision, it can’t be decreed.

There was a time Japan was buying up American businesses.  China is on now taking up chunks of America. India almost controls British economy. Nigerians have heavy property investments in Dubai, UK and South Africa. It goes round and round.

EVEN GOLD WILL RUST: where are the likes of Ojukwu Transport in the  Lagos of yore? Where’s MKO Abiola of recent memory? Money has no ancestry, as Yoruba say. They also say that it’s God who gives wealth (to whosoever he wishes).

Therefore, let’s stop fretting about bricks and mortar; or about who owns what. Let’s not get weary about gold and silver, they too will rust. Eventually, everything will come to naught. What will matter in the end is the life you lived, the imprint you left and the health of your soul…

IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS: Reuben is clearly in error here. And it’s not too late to take back his unreflective outburst and nigh insult on his numerous viewers. There’s more strength in humility.

Bello: The Politics Behind Bello’s Surrender

0
Yahaya Bello Surrenders

For eight months Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi state eluded the arrest of the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC which wants him tried on corruption-related issue.

Surprisingly, Bello on Tuesday handed himself to the EFCC and he’s currently being detained by the commission, which said he’s being drilled ahead his trial at a Federal High court in Abuja on November 28.

Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, while confirming the development on Tuesday night said  the former governor is currently being interrogated by investigators.

The former governor allegedly stole a whopping N110 billion while he presided over the affairs of the Nigeria North central state, for eight years the EFCC claimed amidst serious agitation among not a few Nigerians that he be brought to book.

Since April this year, when he was first declared wanted by the commission, the former governor played hide and seek with the EFCC, the last one being in September when he reported to the commission’s office in Abuja, but later went underground, amidst suggestions that he’s being aided by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo to dodge arrest.

Governor Ododo, who rode on Bello’s wings to office last year has allegedly been hiding his predecessor in the state Government House, Lokoja using his immunity status as a state governor, political analysts said.

Recall that Governor Ododo’s security clashed with the EFCC at the Kogi state Liaison Office in Abuja, two months ago, when detectives from the commission tried to arrest the former governor.

Ododo, had same day of the incident accompanied Bello to the EFCC office.

Now that the former governor has surrendered himself, close watchers of the matter said the chicken may have finally come home to roost for him, as the EFCC has charged him for over N100 billion fraud.

Other analysts are saying that his surrender may indicate a crack in his relationship with his successor who may have decided to allow “him to run his race’ one person familiar with the state politics said on Wednesday.

The incumbent may have also been warned by the “Presidency” to stop blocking Bello’s trial, another person close to the Nigerian seat of power, Aso Rock said.

According to the source, Governor Ododo “has been warned to allow the court to do their job by allowing Bello to face trial”.

In September an FCT  High court in Abuja reiterated an earlier order on Bello to surrender himself to EFCC for trial.

The court, in a ruling by Justice Maryanne Anenih, had also fixed November 27 for the arraignment of the former governor, who is expected to take his plea tomorrow when he appears in court.

Meanwhile, close watchers of the issue insist that the former governor should expect a long trial after his months of ding dong with the Nigerian authority.

Bianca Ojukwu  Condemns Sit-at- Home Order, Urges President Tinubu To Free Nnamdi Kanu

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu

“I will do whatever it takes to ensure the President releases Nnamdi Kanu” – Bianca

Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, has expressed optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be magnanimous enough to release incarcerated Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Ojukwu stated that the release of Kanu is essential in addressing the issues bedeviling the South East.

The Minister spoke at the 13th memorial anniversary of her husband, Late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu in Owerri, Imo State.

She further emphasized that President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release.

She argued that freeing Kanu would expose criminal elements who have used his detention as a cover to perpetrate heinous crimes in the South-east.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu is paramount to separating genuine freedom fighters from criminals causing mayhem in the South-east. Our people face existential threats, and we must act to restore peace.

“President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release. It will expose the masqueraders behind the violence and help restore order. I will do whatever it takes to ensure His Excellency grants this request,” she stated.

She, however, decried the imposition of violent “sit-at-home” orders in the South East, which she said contradicts the ideals of self-determination and have stifled economic activities in the region.

“Ndigbo are enterprising and their brother’s keepers. We must reclaim our land and continue to propagate the ideals for which Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu stood.

“Communities are empty. Our illustrious sons and daughters have fled. Kidnappers now abduct their brothers for ransom. This is not what Dim Ojukwu fought for,” she said.

She called for an end to the violence plaguing the South-east, emphasizing that the Igbo people are not known for harming their own.

The Minister stressed the need for collective action to reclaim the region from criminality and insecurity.

Ekpa’s Arrest Huge Relief For South East- Ohanaeze; Calls For Dialogue With Afenifere, ACF

0
Dr Alex Ogbonnia - Ohanaeze Ogbonnai

Dr Alex Ogbonnia, the Public Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra, IPOB to shun violence and dialogue with groups in other parts of the country to end the alleged marginalisation of the south east.

He explained that Ndigbo cannot achieve what they want through arm insurrection.

Ogbonnai spoke following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, the Finland based ‘Prime Minister” of Biafran Government by the Finnish authority, which is now trying him for international terrorism.

The arrest of Ekpa, the magazine reports, has brought a huge relief to the region, which have been bedeviled by serious insecurity in recent months, due to the activities of the Seccessionist IPOB.

The Ohanaeze leader made the remark on Wednesday on Channels Television Morning Brief Programme, saying the region can not win the battle of marginalisation alone.
