North, South Clash As Tinubu’s Controversial Tax Bills Polarise Nigeria

Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Amidst the serious controversies stoke by the the Tax Reform Bills sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National assembly recently prominent groups in the southern part of the country has queued behind the president.

The southern groups supporting President include Igbo social cultural orgainsation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, the Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association, YYSA, amongst others which said on Sunday that the country has a lot to benefit from the bill.

Their positions negate those of their northern counterpart which have kicked against the proposed law because they believe the region will be shortchanged in the new arrangement, saying it’s skewed in favour of a particular section of the country.

For distance, the Northern Governors’ Forum, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, including prominent religious bodies and  individuals, have kicked against the bill.

While speaking on the bill on Sunday on Channels Television, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state called on President Tinubu to withdraw the bill to allow for wider consultations.

A prominent northern senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the Senate had last week, during plenary urged his colleagues to throw out the bill citing the controversies that have trailed it.

Also, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar said yesterday that it will be better to address the suspicions that have been raised by some Nigerians over the bill.

However, Ohanaeze while supporting President Tinubu on the bill said the south east stands to gain more from the new tax regime if eventually passed by the NASS, saying it will promote entrepreneurship.

According to  a statement issued yesterday by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Igbo group called on the lawmakers from the region to vote in support of the bill in the NASS, saying it will benefit “the industrious Igbos who plays a pivotal role in driving the Nigerian economy,” adding that it arrived at this conclusion after consulting widely on the issue.

The statement read in part, “In an emphatic affirmation of progress and economic empowerment, Ohanaeze Ndigbo hereby announces its steadfast endorsement of President Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reforms Bills. The Igbo people, renowned for our entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to economic self-determination, stand to gain immensely from these reforms.

“The proposed measures are expected to safeguard the private sector, particularly benefiting the industrious Igbos who plays a pivotal role in driving the Nigerian economy through vibrant SME activities.

“In light of these compelling advantages, Ohanaeze Ndigbo ardently calls upon all Southern Federal lawmakers—both in the Senate and the House of Representatives—to unify their efforts in support of President Tinubu’s transformative restructuring program within Nigeria’s economic and fiscal sectors.”

On his part, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi said the organization is upbeat that all the states in the country will derive huge benefits if the tax bills become law, stressing that the controversies that have trailed the bills is needles, adding that the bill is part of the restructuring that the most Nigerians have been craving for.

Reacting to the concerns raised over the derivation method, Ajayi said “since people consume items and patronize services in every state, there is no reason any state will not benefit from the proceeds of VAT collected in their domains”.

Adding “From experience, where the derivation formula has been applied such as the Niger Delta etc., benefiting states have been the gainers for it.

“Since every state has a population that can engage in activities capable of enhancing VAT, it means that every state has the opportunity of deriving maximum benefits from the new arrangement being propose.”

Expressing its support for the bill YYSA President Olalekan Hammed, urged those against the bill to see the positives rather than the negative, noting that the country will benefit tremendously from it, adding that more resources will be realised as revenue if the new regime is allowed to prevail.

He said the country cannot afford to remain in the same trajectory for years urging the north to prepare for the imminent change because “We cannot continue doing things the same way and expect development.”

He explained that the bills will simplify the tax landscape, reduce the burden on small businesses, and streamline tax collection.

“Moreover, the aspect of the bills that seem unfriendly to Northern people is the proposed shift in VAT revenue distribution, allocating revenues based on states where goods and services are consumed rather than pooling them centrally for redistribution. However, there is nothing panicky about this because only change is constant. We cannot continue doing things the same way and expect development,” he said.

The tax bills described by analysts as very controversial passed the first and second readings in the Senate last week, with strong indications that the House of Representatives will follow suit with the Upper Chamber.

Meanwhile, analysts also insist that fireworks are  expected at the NASS this week as the north moves to block it from passage through their lawmakers. To underscore this position, the Kano state caucus in the NASS yesterday directed it members in NASS to reject the bills when they come up for debate.

“You Are Mocking Thousands Of Victims With Your Pardon Of Bandits”,  Forum Chides Kaduna Gov.

Bandits in the North

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Middle Belt Forum, MBF ,has strongly rejected the amnesty recently granted some “repentant” banditry elements by the Kaduna state authorities.

This is even as they tagged the exercise a grave injustice and a relegation of responsibility to law abiding citizens who have suffered the heinous crime committed by the bandits.

The Source reports that the Kaduna State Governor ,Uba Sani, on Thursday November 28, 2024, accepted the olive branch extended by some repentant bandits and other criminal elements operating in parts of the State.

At a ceremony in Birnin Gwari Local Government, the Governor  granted pardon to several of the erstwhile bandits, insisting that they have shown genuine signs of repentance.

He promised to immediately commence the process of their rehabilitation and full integration into civil society.

But a statement from Binniyat Luka, the MBF Kaduna State Chapter Chairman, on Sunday December 1 2024 in Kaduna, described as sad and unfortunate the Governor’s decision to grant  pardon to the criminal elements.

He described the ceremony at which the bandits were received and granted amnesty on Thursday  by the Governor as not being different from a celebration of crime and criminality.

He debunked the claim by the Governor that the bandits were granted pardon after dropping their arms ,as well as after negotiations with relevant stakeholders.

The MBF expressed huge shock that Governor Sani could embark on such a far reaching decision without carrying major stakeholders along .

” It is with deep concern and consternation that we received the odd news of His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, granting pardon to terrorists a.k.a bandits .

“These are violent criminals that have been accused of serial mass murder, mass kidnappings, rape and arson among other heinous crimes against his citizens in the Birnin Gwari axis of the State and beyond for over a decade.

“The Governor also assured them (repentant bandits) of rehabilitation and reintegration into the society.

“What rehabilitation do criminals who are multi- millionaires from composite criminality need?”, the MBF querried

According to the MBF, information at its disposal indicate that most of the pardoned bandits are the most notorious elements on the wanted list of the military and other security agencies.

It  expressed worry that letting the criminal elements loose under whatever guise remains one of the most dangerous mistakes that can be committed by any descent and law abiding society .

“It is on record that past Governments of Zamfara and Katsina States have tried such an exercise and it ended up escalating the criminality of the bandits who are absolutely not persons of honour and integrity and as such their words cannot be trusted

“We do not know where Nigerian State Governors are drawing powers from to forgive persons accused of Federal crimes such as banditry, capture and occupying Nigerian territories, mass murder and sundry grim crimes.

“No person that carry out the scale of massive heartless cruelty for over a decade – killing thousands, raping and displacing hundreds of thousands into conditions of destitution that these terrorists are accused of ,deserve to go free. Especially, for self-serving crimes. Not in the most lawless country.

“To us in the MBF Kaduna state chapter, the freedom and peace that these evil people are enjoying today is crude lack of empathy and sympathy to their victims dead or alive, to think that Kaduna State will use its tax payers money to rehabilitate these outlaws, feels very insulting to the hundreds of their victims who are living with scars of their wickedness, especially those who can never recover their losses in their life time and those that cannot even feed today.

“We  are at a loss on how these gunmen will return to the same communities that they have terrorized and pillaged and hope to live  peacefully with those who survived their terror

“It is a grave injustice and a relegation of responsibility to law abiding citizens who have suffered the heinous crimes committed by these. bandits ,especially as they have never received any assistance from the Government, but instead, the perpetrators of the crime are now being celebrated and pampered as repentant terrorists”,  the MBF statement further reads .

The group while drawing attention to the several failed attempts to rehabilitate and reintegrate Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, also expressed fear that the Kaduna experiment may be goaded more by the exigences of 2027 general election than any sincere efforts at rehabilitation.

“The MBF hopes  that the repentant bandits would not play prominent role in the 2027 general elections as armed thugs for political parties and politicians”, Luka stated.

Opposition to the four tax bills before the national assembly, has continued to rise despite scaling first and second readings in the Senate as senators and members of the green chamber from Kano State opposed the controversial Tax Reform Bills.

The decision was reached during a state caucus meeting chaired by the State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and attended by most of the state’s representatives.

Idris Dankawu, the member representing Kumbotso Federal Constituency, stated, “To clarify this issue, I want to inform the people of Kano State, especially the residents of Kumbotso Federal Constituency, that based on the outcome of our meeting, we are against the proposed Tax Reform Bill.

“We have agreed to work collectively to ensure that the bill is withdrawn in the overall interest of the people of Kano State.

“Let me reassure the good people of Kumbotso Federal Constituency that your views, opinions, and yearnings will continue to receive my utmost attention and care.”

The lawmakers are actively working to challenge the bill, citing its potential negative impacts on residents of Kano State.

The four bills, transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on September 3, have sparked widespread controversy and strong opposition.

These bills include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

Critics, including the Northern Governors Forum, the Traditional Rulers Council, the National Economic Council, and the Northern Elders Forum, have raised serious concerns about the bills.

The National Economic Council, comprising the vice president and governors, has advised the president to withdraw the bills for further consultations. The governors argue that some clauses in the bills are detrimental to the northern region.

Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State.

By Ayodele Oni

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said that he is the first and only person that will contest election in Nigeria without seeking help for native doctors or prophets.

While reaffirming his trust in God, he stated that he contested the September 21, Governorship election in the state without seeking help from either native doctors or prophets.

Okpebholo, who stated this on Sunday, at the Winner’s Chapel, Akho in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, where he worshipped alongside top members of his administration, said that his faith is in Christ alone.

“I want to thank God for his wonderful deeds in my life, as no one can accomplish this except Him alone. My life is filled with testimonies, and God has consistently granted me victory in all my endeavours.

“This is the first instance where someone has contested an election without seeking help from native doctors or prophets. My faith is in Christ alone. If God does not will it, then let it not be done.

“In Nigeria, and indeed the world, no prophet or native doctor can claim that I visited them for help in winning the election. The only factor I recognize is God. If He cannot accomplish it, then let it not be done.

“This marks the first time in Nigeria that a person has contested an election, and the prevailing sentiment is that God’s grace is upon him or her.

“As a member of Winner’s Church, I am confident that we cannot be losers, especially since both my Deputy and I are part of this community. How can we lose? While others were strategizing and utilizing media outlets, I trusted in the Lord, and He granted me victory.”

In his sermon, the Pastor of Winner’s Chapel Church, Akho, Peter Osawe, while speaking on the topic ‘Wisdom kits for joy and rejoicing,’ emphasized that God is the pivotal factor in human life.

Osawe noted that nothing occurs without God’s knowledge and encouraged the congregation to continue drawing strength from God’s word.

He said; “Nigeria will become a better nation if we work together, as the process of improvement begins with us”.

Governor Okpebholo also attended a service at God’s People World Wide Prayer Ministry in Illeh, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where the General Overseer, Apostle Ehijele Unuayan, urged the Governor to remain focused on his vision for the state’s development and the welfare of its people.

Unuayan expressed gratitude to the Governor for approving automatic employment for First Class graduates of Edo origin from universities in Nigeria and worldwide.

In his remark, Governor Okpebholo said he was in the church to seek prayers for success in governing the state.

“I am here to pray for the strength to move the state forward, to work for the Edo people, to utilize the state’s resources for development, and to promote justice and fairness for the Edo people.”

Tinubu Wants Nigerians To Pay VAT On ‘Maggi’, Northern Cleric Laments Over Controversial Tax Bill

0
President Bola Tinubu

Northern Islamic Prof Mansur Ibrahim said it is sad that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pressing ahead with the controbersial Tax reform Bills despite is rejections by Nigerians.

President Tinubu recently sent four bills – the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024 -SB.583; the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024- SB.584; the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024-SB.585; and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024 – SB.586 – to the NASS for passage.

The cleric who spoke at the weekend in Sokoto state during the Friday Jumaat service said the bill does not bode well for the country, that is why it has been widely rejected by groups and prominent individual.

Prof Ibrahim said it is wrong that President Tinubu has insisted on the passage of the bills by the national assembly despite its rejection by the National Executive Council, NEC, Nigeria’s Governors Forum, NGF, among others that it’s not good for the country.

The magazine reports that serious controversies have trailed the bills since President Tinubu sent it to the National Assembly for passage. The Tax Reform Bill passed the First and second Reading in the Senate, last week amidst apparent divisions among lawmakers.

For instance, Deputy Senate President and  Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the Senate had clashed during plenary, following accusation by Ndume that the bill was being rushed for passage.

Speaking, prof Ibrahim said the president decided to go ahead with the bill, which he said will worsen the plight of many Nigerians. The cleric accused President Tinubu of being insensitive to the feelings of the North which has pointedly rejected the bill, saying that the suffering in the country will get worse if Nigerians are made to pay VAT on basic life’s necessity such as ‘Maggi, used by many in the country to season their food.

While the tax bills favours ‘Lagos’ it will be very detrimental to the interest of the north, he said, adding that there’s more than meets the eye considering the manner in which the bill is being rushed for passage in NASS.

He called for its immediate suspension in line with the agitations of many Nigerians.

Prof Ibrahim said, “Enacting a law is a long process which allows all concerned parties to contribute to its development, and the lawmakers have to deliberate on it; make consultation, debate, and public hearings have to take place before approval, but this particular law, they are using force to actualise it within the shortest period”, the cleric told his congregation on Friday.

“The president’s insistence on the tax reform bill is either he is not aware of the hardship Nigerians are going through, or he lacks empathy by planning to add more tax burden on Nigerians, especially on VAT which is why they are gradually withdrawing cash in circulation. With this, any transaction, including buying Maggie cube, you have to pay tax.

“He is not fair and just to other Nigerian states who voted for him, especially the north, and we are still aware that Lagos was won by the Labour Party, not APC. Despite this, the president is giving them preferential treatment”, the cleric said.

“We are calling on you to fear God and suspend the tax reform bills as suggested by the National Economic Council”, the cleric stated.

The bills sponsored by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele in the Senate, few days ago, has stoked serious divisions among Nigerians, the main opposition to it came from the North which said it will be shortchanged if it is allowed to pass.

Biafra Declaration: IPOB Slams Finland-Based Agitators, Calls  Them Criminals

0
Simon Ekpa

There is no other valid Biafra declaration apart from the one declared by Odumegu Ojukwu, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has said.

The self-determination group made the remark on Sunday in response to the declaration of the Biafra Republic by some elements of the group based in Finland.

According to a statement issued by IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, the group is not part of the declaration, describing the action as a scam and criminal.

The IPOB’s spokesman said the late Biafran strongman had made the declaration over five dcades ago, stressing that what is required now is referendum to validate Biafra Republic.

“Biafra cannot be declared for the second time by anyone,” Powerful said, disassociating “IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the idiocy exhibited in Finland called Biafra second declaration.”

Part of the statement: “The noble family of IPOB led by the leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wishes to disassociate itself from the purported Biafra second declaration by an infamous no-name group. The so-called declaration is a scam. There is no room for another Biafra declaration besides the one our eternal leader, Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu, declared in 1967.

“IPOB wishes to commend responsible media organisations and social media bloggers in Nigeria and in the diaspora that didn’t give attention to the mockery of the Biafra struggle by infiltrators in Finland and elsewhere. However, it is imperative to inform the international community, Biafrans, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafran freedom that Biafra had been declared by our eternal leader late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1967.

“What IPOB is doing is to restore the sovereignty of the declared Biafra Independence that was forced to surrender through genocide by the Nigerian and British governments. IPOB is calling for a United Nations-supervised referendum for Biafrans so that the declared sovereignty can be restored.

“Biafra cannot be declared for the second time by anyone. It is sad that some unscrupulous elements who failed in the mission to infiltrate and destroy IPOB went into the jamboree they claimed was Biafra’s second declaration outside the  Biafra territory. Biafrans and IPOB, in particular, are happy that the fun fare the infiltrators had in Finland this weekend was ignored by all responsible media organisations.”

The group noted that persons involved in the purported second declaration in Finland “were among the sponsors of insecurity in the South-East region. Their agenda is to destabilise the South-East, divide the people, and divert the attention of Biafrans and those sympathetic to the Biafra struggle by making the genuine Biafra struggle unattractive to our people. They failed woefully.”

Powerful said IPOB is an informed movement championing the restoration of Biafra sovereignty and freedom and cannot involve itself in self-deception and scamming people with the Biafra project.

“The ‘Autopilot criminals’ making money from some of their ignorant followers to make an international mockery of the Biafra struggle will all pay a price. IPOB will not come after them, but the blood of the fallen heroes of Biafra will chase and hunt them down.

“Those who have funded infiltrators that gathered for a picnic in Finland have been scammed. Now that the infiltrators and agent of provocateurs have declared their independence in Finland, we hope they will enjoy their freedom stop interfering with IPOB’s peaceful struggle end engagement for the restoration of the Biafra Nation.

The magazine reported that Simon Ekpa the notorious Finland-based “Biafra Prime Minister’ was arrest by the authority of that country ahead his plan o declare the Biafra Republic on December 1. Ekpa now faces international terrorism charges, according to the Finnish police.

Maritime Safety: Africa Needs Int’l Collaboration, Financing- Mobereola

0
Dayo Mobereola - NIMASA DG

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has declared that innovative financing models will serve as a catalyst for achieving sustainable development in the African Maritime industry.

Mobereola, who stated this while speaking at the 7th Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, assured attendees of Nigeria’s commitment to advancing a future where Africa’s maritime sector thrives sustainably.

In his words, “Nigeria is committed to collaborating on technology and innovation to enhance safety, security, decarbonization, and the marine environment for a sustainable future.” He emphasized that this conference presents a pivotal opportunity to address our shared challenges, particularly those related to sustainable energy, regional security, and economic growth.

“We are here to advocate for innovative financing models and international support that will facilitate sustainable growth. As Nigeria pursues infrastructure development and digital transformation within our maritime sector, we call on our regional and international partners to support these efforts through technical and financial backing. Our priorities at the AAMA conference include exploring collaborative avenues to enhance maritime safety and security. By reinforcing our adherence to frameworks like the Djibouti and Yaoundé Codes of Conduct, we aim to solidify Nigeria’s role in combating piracy and maritime crime across West Africa,” he stated.

The Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) was established to lay a firm foundation for regular consultations, enabling African maritime administrations to build joint positions on issues of common concern in the maritime sector. When Nigeria hosted the 3rd AAMA conference in 2017, a master plan was developed outlining the measures necessary to advance the maritime agenda as envisioned in the African Maritime Transport Charter. The Association has also created a platform to strengthen cooperation at the regional, continental, and international levels, harmonizing policies and goals essential for the growth of the African maritime sector.

OPINION: President Tinubu Lays An Egg

Steve Osuji
Steve Osuji

By Steve Osuji

“If an African child is assured of a pint of milk in the classroom, a good sandwich or one egg daily, there will be no fear of learning.” *- President Bola Tinubu in France

Who writes the President’s speeches? Who manages his thoughts and actions? Do we have a strategy team in the presidency? How do we prepare for huge events like the current state visit to France?

EXPRESSO asks these and so many other questions over Tinubu’s current visit to France. It’s obvious that the current presidency is puny in terms of knowledge stock, experience and mental power of the current aides, but it seems to get worse. The intellection in the presidency gets annoyingly bereft and they are getting poorer even on the basics.

It’s elementary that every piece of daily action of a country’s president/leader, is choreographed. Indeed,  rehearsed and mastered.  Much more so an international engagement with no mean a country as France. And we can tell you for free that the meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron was a meeting with the allied nations  of NATO.

Though hosted by Paris,  it is a meeting with  the US,  UK,  Germany,  Italy,  etc. It’s NATO realigning and consolidating territorial interests in Africa in view of the emerging revolt in the sahel. The NATO brigands who have mismanaged their prime opportunities in West and Central Africa are now desperate as Russia snd China are closing in and edging them out.

But who is leading the thought in Aso Rock? Apparently none as everything looks wrong from the outside.

Look at President Tinubu’s dressing. No alive president stands on the world stage looking like a scarecrow. Any president worth the name has a clear public identity even before he ascends the office.

As the photo here shows, Tinubu dons  a knee-length winter coat over his already well-known and fitting danshiki. Now what manner of dressing is this that looks like an afterthought.

Didn’t we know it’s winter in Europe, which means acute cold? If you can’t visit in winter, postpone until It’s conducive. In fact, if there be a think-tank, it would have suggested that Macron visited Abuja. They need this visit more than we do.

If you must visit now, sew your dress (danshiki or agbada, make it cold proof!

Let’s overlook the unpresidential appearance and of course,  the milling crowd of entourage on shopping spree and estacode jamboree… let’s look at the issues.

From where we sit, it seems as if our president  is on an early Christmas holiday instead of the hard-headed diplomatic outreach that the visit is meant to be. Meet and greet. Photo opportunities. Outdoor optics…

And when it came to making a statement, it was puerile as always; incoherent and banal. Look at the quote above, extracted from President Tinubu’s main address. President Tinubu practically lays an egg in France in the guise of a speech.

If an African pupil is assured of a good sandwich, if he could have an egg a day, he would be amenable to learning! One can’t understand the meaning of this talk?

Is Macron supposed to come build poultry for Africans or lay eggs for Nigerian school pupils. In one and half years,  there would have been a glut of eggs and chicken in Nigeria if Tinubu has paid just a bit of attention to the poultry sub-unit of agriculture. The ordered world would be scandalised of course hearing the leader of one of  the largest countries in the world moaning about eggs and sandwiches to her host country. Expresso is shame-faced!

Though it’s noteworthy that Tinubu’s extempore speech has improved a bit. But

one was expecting to hear about grand plans to clear out the last vestiges of bandits in Nigeria’s North East and North West by end of 2025. We expected an aggressive blueprint to return all out of school children back to the classrooms by September as well as legal framework to levy severe sanctions on parents who bar children from being in school.

We look forward to solid roadmaps for pulling at least 10 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2027. We wanted to see a €20b plan to revamp the troublous Nigeria’s livestock sub-sector.

These are some of the concrete bargaining chips to push at France and her allies.

Not telling the world about eggs and sandwiches. Or telling your host no child should go to bed hungry as if it’s the fault of Macron that Nigeria’s children are acutely malnourished.

Food Crisis: Uzodimma Canvasses Special Funds For Agricultural Research

0
Hope Uzodimma - Imo State Governor
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.:

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has canvassed the setting up of a special fund for agricultural research to combat food insecurity in Nigeria and diversify the economy away from oil.

He said since it has been established  that the future of agriculture in Nigeria depends on research, technology, and innovation, there is an urgent need to put in place ,” a dedicated specialised research fund to aid research in universities and other tertiary institutions.”

Uzodimma, who spoke in Umuahia weekend as the guest  lecturer, during the 12th Convocation ceremony of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, suggested that the fund be called Tertiary Agricultural Education Research Fund

( TAETFUND).

The governor who was repented by the Commissioner for tertiary education, Professor  Victor Nwachukwu,  said a law should be made for a mandatory contribution of one per cent of the profit of all agro based corporate bodies,  infrastructure and industries to the fund, while federal and state governments should  contribute an equal amount from the tax to the fund.

He listed other potential contributors to the fund as regional organisations like Ohanaeze Ndigbo,  Afenifere, and Arewa to facilitate research in agriculture to avert food crises.

Uzodimma, who spoke on the topic, “AGRICULTURE AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN A DIVERSIFIED ECONOMY:A VISION OF RENEWED HOPE THROUGH TOWN AND GOWN ENTREPRENEURIAL PARTNERSHIPS,”

noted that the future of agriculture in Nigeria ” depends on our ability to keep innovating, keep researching and keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible.”

He recalled that great countries in the world that  are self-sufficient in agriculture, like America, relied heavily on research and innovation to achieve the feat.

“China and India have seen rapid mechanisation in recent decades leading to huge gains in productivity.  Brazil has emerged as a major agricultural exporter, thanks to its research into tropical farming.  So. Nigeria can not stand still.  We need ways to innovate and push forward,” he declared.

He was of the opinion that any hope of using agriculture to diversify the country’s economy depended on the quality of research and associated funding from both the government and corporate organisations.

Uzodimma, however, contended that universities of agriculture, such as Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, must lead the way through research and innovation for improved agricultural revolution.

According to him ,Nigerian universities ought to collaborate with their foreign counterparts and learn from them the required techniques for improved productivity.

The guest lecturer particularly charged Michael Okpara University of Agriculture to avail itself of the opportunity provided by the Agribusiness Incubation Centre  in the university to teach local farmers  the new method of farming.

He urged them to “enhance the provision of more practical on hand training of students and strengthen ties with international institutions to share knowledge and learn global best practices in agriculture.”

Faith Based Universities Not Established For The Poor – Pastor Olukoya

0
Prof Daniel Olukoya

By Ayodele Oni

The General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracle (MFM), Prof Daniel Olukoya, has observed that faith based universities are not established for the children of the poor.

He maintained that the high school fees being charged by Faith-Based universities in the country was as a result of the high cost of maintaining those universities.

Olukoya, who was conferred with honorary doctoral degrees in Management of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), said the energy cost was responsible for the high school fees being charged by the Universities owned by religious bodies.

There are 13 Faith-Based universities in Nigeria.

Olukoya, who is the proprietor of one of the Faith-based universities, Mountain Top University, Ogun State, said the parents of those that attend the churches of faith-based universities are finding it difficult to send their children to such schools because of high school fees necessitated by the cost of maintaining the schools.

Absolving the proprietors of the institutions, Olukoya said “It is not the fault of those proprietors. I am one of them. I am always at the back of the poor because I know how difficult it was for me to get to the university. My parents didn’t have the money.

“But then the current situation states that if you cannot pay good money to the lecturers or the professors, you won’t get good teachers. And if you run a private university and you are paying less than the federal universities, you will not get good professors.

“So it is the financing and paying the salaries. And that is the situation now. Power to run a university on a generator is a lot of money. In our university, most of the money goes to diesel. It is now we are installing solar.”

Speaking on the situation in the country especially security and economic challenges, Olukoya advocated divine intervention through prayer.

His words “There is only one weapon that can kill any problem, it is prayers. No matter how strong it is, prayer can dismantle any problem.

“And so I keep preaching here that what we need in Nigeria is divine intervention.

“Let God intervene in what we are doing. Divine intervention is greater than your brain, what your brain can do. And from what is happening in the world, you can see that God is showing mankind that they are helpless.”
