Air Peace Indicted By FCCPC For Allegedly Blocking Ticket Pricing Abuse Probe

By Akinwale Kasali

Air Peace, one of the Nation’s Local and International Airline has been indicted by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, for allegedly blocking Ticket Abuse Probe.

In expressing its dismay over the Airline’s attitude, FCCPC described its attempts to derail the ongoing inquiry into allegations of exploitative ticket pricing and other potential violations of consumer rights.

In a statement posted on its X account, the FCCPC said, “Last Thursday, the Commission had to refute a report syndicated in a section of the media which grossly misrepresented the proceedings at a meeting between its officials and the Air Peace team earlier on December 3 at the Commission’s Abuja headquarters. The meeting was a follow-up to an avalanche of petitions received from passengers in recent times.”

The statement clarified that the meeting was held in private, consistent with Section 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which allows the Commission discretion to conduct inquiries in public or in camera.

The FCCPC added that “Although the Commission chose to conduct the December 3 session in camera as a gesture of good faith to preserve confidentiality, no sooner had the session ended than leaks appeared in the media attributing unfounded but prejudicial statements to the Commission’s officials, categorically declaring that ‘Air Peace was not under investigation’.

“These leaks also quoted the Air Peace Chairman, Mr. Allen Onyema, engaging in ostentation of self-adulation. Curiously, the same media leaks omitted a boastful statement by Mr. Onyema at the same December 3 engagement that he could decide to shut down the airline, ostensibly to show he was doing the nation a favour by flying.”

The FCCPC reiterated in a December 5 statement that its inquiry was still ongoing, urging the public to disregard unverified media reports.

The Commission also took issue with claims made during a December 6 press conference by Air Peace in Lagos. It described the airline’s remarks as “outlandish claims and innuendos obviously intended to whip up sentiments” while failing to address the core issues.

“By asserting that only the aviation regulatory agency could inquire into its affairs, Air Peace betrays a terribly poor understanding of both the legal and moral pillars of its operating environment. Passengers are consumers of its services. Their rights are inalienable and guaranteed under the FCCPA. It is the basis of FCCPC’s intervention,” the agency noted.

The FCCPC cited its legal mandate, under Section 17(e) of the FCCPA 2018, to conduct necessary inquiries into any matter under the Act’s purview, and Section 127(1)(a), which prohibits unfair, unreasonable, or unjust pricing practices.

The inquiry into Air Peace focuses on allegations of unjustified fare hikes for advance bookings on certain domestic routes and a lack of transparency in pricing structures, which may violate consumer rights and fair competition principles.

“Pursuant to Section 148(3)(c) of the FCCPA 2018, the FCCPC, upon receipt of a consumer complaint, can direct an inspector to institute an inquiry and investigate the matter as quickly as practicable to determine whether the undertaking has acted inconsistently with the provisions of the Act,” the statement concluded.

Ondo Gov Election: Ad Hoc Staff Urges INEC To Pay Them, Commission Blames Banking Error

Prof Mahmood Yakubu Commissions BVAS Facility in Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

Adhoc staff hired by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for the conduct of Ondo state November 16 governorship election, are aggrieved due to non payment of their allowances and have threatened to stage a protest.

The non payment is however not deliberate on the part of the commission which has blamed the delay on banking errors.

Over 17,000 ad hoc staff, who undergone the technical training before the governorship election, were deployed by the electoral body for the recently concluded exercise.

The aggrieved ad hoc staff, who spoke on Sunday in Akure, the state capital, lamented that they are yet to receive their allowance almost three weeks after the governorship election.

Some of them alleged that INEC had earlier promised to pay them on the day of the exercise, disclosing that it was “a promise yet to be fulfilled.”

They explained that the electoral body had promised to pay them less than N20,000 for the work done on the election day.

One of the ad hoc staff, who served as a Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO), explained that they never expected the electoral body would owe them till present.

“They are yet to pay us our allowance. As I speak with you now. INEC is not speaking with us. They are not giving us listening ears at all. Many of us are affected, and they are yet to pay. It is sad that INEC is yet to fulfil its promise of paying us.

“Those attending to us at the commission’s office are refusing to listen to our plight. We are demanding the payment of our allowance, or we storm the INEC office massively starting from this week.”

Another ad hoc staff, who accused the commission of “using and dumping” them after the election, however, pleaded with the state Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other stakeholders to prevail on INEC in the state to pay them their allowance.

He also revealed that other ad hoc staff who are aggrieved by the non-payment of their allowances are planning to stage a peaceful protest to the INEC office.

“I’m also ready to join the protest if we don’t receive the money before Tuesday because it’s getting late. It’s over two weeks that the election was conducted. They use and dump us. I feel INEC had no reason not to pay us.”

When contacted, Dr Temitope Akanmu, the spokesman for INEC in Ondo state, however, denied the allegation of the ad hoc staff.

Akanmu stated that the commission had commenced payment of allowance to the ad hoc staff that took part in the governorship election.

He noted that those who are experiencing delayed payment was as a result of the problem associated with their financial institution.

“We have paid the ad hoc staff who worked during the election. But we understand that there are some who have issues with their banks, and we are working with them to resolve whatever problem they might be experiencing.

“So, what we have is just pocket of challenges that is common with banking errors. The few ones who are yet to receive will get them soon I can assure them.

“Even the REC, Oluwatoyin Babalola, is mostly concerned about the problem, which has to do with banking errors. She has instructed that it should be fixed.”

Biodun Oyebanji - Ekiti State Governor

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has presented cheques to the tune of N146 million as compensation to 46 indigenes of Oke Ako, whose land were acquired for commercial agriculture.

A total 4,000 hectares of land were allocated to young farmers in the “Bring Back the Youth in Agriculture” scheme which is in partnership with an investor, in Oke Ako.

The project is aimed at boosting agribusiness, engage youths in commercial agriculture and open up the community and its environs for wealth creation.

Also, different range of tractors and processing equipment were  inaugurated by the Governor for use by the young farmers.

The event coincided with the dry season harvest by the participants in the “Bring Back Youths in Agriculture” programme of the state government.

Speaking shortly before distributing the cheques, the Governor expressed satisfaction with the takeoff of the agribusiness project despite the initial delay witnessed in a bid to resolve some issues around land acquisition.

He explained that the compensation could not be paid earlier to allow for the conclusion of enumeration of economic trees which were affected by the acquisition, noting that the second round of the enumeration exercise would soon commence to pay compensation to more landowners.

The Governor lauded the Oke Ako community led by the Regent, Princess Tinuade Ogunbiyi for cooperation with his administration, adding that commercial agricultural activities would attract rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, provision of health facilities and establishment of cottage industries capable of turning around the economy of the axis.

The Governor also noted that kidnapping and other criminal activities have reduced remarkably in the area as most of the forests that served as hideouts have been cultivated under the agribusiness scheme involving the youths.

“What we are doing here today is another promise we have kept in ensuring that compensation is paid to our citizens whose land were acquired for commercial agricultural purposes.

“We are paying them the compensation for the economic trees lost to the acquisition process and for them to use the money to get another land for the continuation of their farming so that they will not be denied of their means of livelihood.

“For development to get to any place, it will be accompanied with some pains. It’s just like a woman who is giving birth to a baby, she will have to endure  pain after which the pain will be overshadowed by the joy of the birth of a new baby.

“Before we remove the remaining economic trees, we will pay compensation to the owners and the presence of large scale commercial farming will bring many positive things.

“Factories, schools and hospitals will spring up here while we can also have tractor assembling and engineering hub.”

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, said the commitment of the Governor made the payment of compensation possible.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands, Survey and e-GIS, Prof. James Olaleye, said the sacrifices of the landowners would go a long way in turning Ekiti into a leading agricultural centre in Nigeria.

He pointed out that the Bureau of Lands under his watch has been working tirelessly to ensure that land administration practices align with the vision of economic growth and food security.

Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

By Adesina Soyooye

In continuation of his snub of Senator Ireti Kingibe, the Senator who represents the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister, has said that the only Senator he knows is the immediate past FCT Minister, Philip Aduda.

Kingibe, one of the few Female Senators in Nigeria’s National Assembly, defeated Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 General Elections. Kingibe ran under the banner of the Labour Party, LP. But she and Wike have never seen eye to eye with Wike snubbing her existence as the Senator representing the FCT.

In an indirect dig at Senator Kingibe and her performance at the Senate so far, Wike said “Politics no be grammar.” According to him, there is the need the need for politicians to prioritize purposeful engagement with their constituents and not listen to  empty rhetoric. He advised people against listening to people who speak eloquently as against  those who produce tangible results. “Politics no be grammer”, he emphasized.

He praised Senator Philip Aduda as a good example of a leader who truly connects with the people. “He’s the only senator I know.” And in slight hint that Senator Kingibe may not represent the FCT in 2027, Wike said: Future political leaders must prioritize the voices and needs of the people. This time around, we will send people who will listen to people. We will send people who will come back to you and say: This is what you sent me to go and do, and this is what I have brought.”

This is, however, not the first time Wike has hinted that Kingibe would likely not go back to the Senate in 2027 to represent the FCT.

Confusion, apprehension and anxiety have gripped the body of Christ, especially, the Anglican Communion, Anambra State, over the fate of His Grace, the Most Rev’d Professor Godwin Okpala.

Okpala, the retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi Diocese and his driver were last seen on Friday. His Grace was on his way to Umuchu, but he and his driver never arrived their destination, and nobody has heard anything from them.

There are fears that the Archbishop and his driver have fallen into the hands of bad people and have become victims of abductors.

His Lordship, the Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, has issued a prayer alert appealing to the faithful to intercede for the safety and swift return of the retired Archbishop.

Wrote a very worried Bishop Obi:

“With a deeply burdened heart, we inform you of the distressing news that our revered Father in God, the Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala, has been missing since Friday morning. He embarked on a journey to Umuchu with his driver but never reached his destination.

“Since then, there has been no communication, and neither he, his driver, nor the vehicle has been found. We plead for fervent prayers, trusting in God’s divine intervention to bring them back safely.”

Indications are that the Police has been alerted of the Archbishop’s fate.

But the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, Toochukwu Ikenga, said he was ignorant of the incident.

The South-east, and especially, Anambra State, recently, has become a hot bed for abductions of innocent people for ransom money.

For former Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, victory couldn’t have been more sweet than it already is for him and his Party, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a dramatic turn of events, Mahama who had been dubbed a perennial Presidential Election loser, having served only one term as President, and lost in two subsequent trials, beat the incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party, NPP.

The NPP and its Leadership, including the President, have conceeded victory to Mahama in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

The election was hotly contested. But Mahama prevailed when milions  Ghanaians headed to the polls on December 7.

Mahama secured a majority of the votes, securing more than 56 per cent of votes cast.

Celebrating the historic victory in a speech, Mahama thanked and appreciated Ghanaians for investing their confidence in him.

His words: “This victory belongs to every Ghanaian who believes in the power of democracy and the promise of a better future.

“Together, we will rebuild trust in our institutions, revive the economy, and ensure that no one is left behind.”

Mahama won the hearts of Ghanaians, especially, the youths by his strong, well articulated assurances during debates to tackle the economic down turn of the country,  create jobs, and fight corruption. He promised  reforms and a revival of key sectors –  as agriculture and manufacturing.

Mahama was President from 2012 to 2017.  He lost a re-election bid in 2016. And lost again on a second trial.

Yoruba Youth Group Tackles Organizers Of Protest Against INEC Chairman

By Akinwale Kasali

A youth group, the Yoruba Youth Council, YYC, has condemned the planned protest against the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmod Yakubu.

The Group described the plan as an unnecessary diversion and a misguided move.

This protest, being organized by the #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement is scheduled to take place in Abuja. But the Yoruba Youth Group has slammed its organizers.

The YYC, in a statement signed by its National President, Eric Oluwole, said the protest is orchestrated by “disgruntled individuals seeking to destabilize our nation for selfish interests.”

Oluwole said: “The Yoruba Youth Council strongly condemns the planned protest against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

“This protest, organized by a group identified as the #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement, is a misguided and unnecessary diversion from the nation’s path toward peace and progress. Their claims of demanding electoral reform and calling for Prof Yakubu’s resignation are insincere, unfounded, and appear to be orchestrated by disgruntled individuals seeking to destabilize our nation for selfish interests.

“It is regrettable that these agitators aim to exploit perceived public dissatisfaction to undermine the significant strides made in our electoral system under Prof Yakubu’s leadership. We firmly believe that these actions are an attempt to tarnish the image of a hardworking and patriotic Nigerian who has introduced critical reforms to enhance electoral credibility and transparency.

“Let it be known that the Yoruba Youth Council stands against this ill-advised and ill-motivated protest. It is evident that this movement seeks to discredit the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has been unwavering in his efforts to transform Nigeria into an economic powerhouse for the benefit of all citizens.

“We call on security agencies across the country to remain vigilant and thwart any attempts to disrupt national peace. Such baseless and provocative actions are a threat to the stability of our nation and must not be tolerated.

“The Yoruba Youth Council proudly supports Prof Mahmood Yakubu and his commendable efforts in reforming Nigeria’s electoral system. His reforms have garnered global recognition, and it is crucial that we collectively reject attempts to derail these advancements through spurious and divisive protests.

“We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant against unpatriotic elements who seek to exploit our democracy for personal gains. Together, we must protect our nation’s peace, stability, and progress.”
