Insecurity: Atiku Slams Reported Arrest Of NBS Statistician General By DSS

0
Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned the federal government to stop politicise the data form the National Bureau of Statistic, NBS following the reported arrest of the Statistician General of the Federation by the Department of State Services, DSS, over its recent reports on the security situation in the country.

The former number two citizen spoke few days after a report released by the NBS to the effect that kidnappers raked  in over N2.2 trillion from their victims within 12 months.

The NBS report also revealed 51.89 million crime incidents occurred across Nigerian households during the said period.

Following the reports, critics of the government said the revelations is a pointer to the worsening state of insecurity in the country.

The attacks on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu became more intensified, following reports that the Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeniran Adeyemi, had been  summoned for questioning by the Department of State Services, DSS over the issue. The NBS has denied the report.

The controversy was further exacerbated after claims that the NBS site has been hacked.

Responding Atiku, in a statement released by his office yesterday said the timing of the attack on NBS is suspicious considering its recent damning reports on the state of insecurity in the country. He said the development posed credibility problems of the NBS because Nigerians will begin to suspect any report form the agency, describing the hack as ‘unprecedented’ adding that the development is typical of the Tinubu administration.

The statement in part, “The development, which is coming on the heels of the recent data published on the website of the NBS on Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, underscores the credibility crisis of the current administration.

“These are strange times in Nigeria, and it is hoped that the situation at hand is not an underhand attempt to pigeonhole the integrity of data majorly used for planning and development and research purposes.

“Subjecting data and statistics such as those harvested, analysed, and released by the NBS to sexing up or political considerations is counterproductive.

“That is why the claim that the website of the National Bureau of Statistics was hacked into, the very first time in its history, should be of concern to the fidelity of the stats it releases to the public.

“Moreover, the coincidence of this so-called hack, coming only shortly after the release of damning stats on security, is suspicious.

“We may be tempted to assume that every stats released by the Bureau is an outcome of a hack.”

Meanwhile, critics said the administration is obviously not happy with the NBS over the security report. The Tinubu administration has further worsened the situation by trying to do damage-control according to them.

AGF To Edo Govt: You Have No Power To Suspend LG Chairmen

0

Lateef Fagemi, the Minister of Justice Attorney General of the Federation has described the suspension of 18 local government chairmen in Edo state as illegal and unconstitutional.

The nation’s number one law officer said on Thursday, that the state House of Assembly has no longer  power to suspend LG chairmen, citing the July 2024 Supreme Court judgment.

The AGF response comes on the heels of the suspension of chairmen by the state Assembly based on a petition by the state governor, Monday Okpebholo that they disobeyed him.

The governor had four days ago written a letter to the Assembly complaining that his directive to the 18 LG chairmen to submit their financial positions to the state government , were not obeyed.

Governor Okpebholo, who accused the chairmen of subordination urged the Assembly to look into the matter, to determine the way forward on the issue. The Assembly followed up by suspending the chairmen for two months.

Reacting to the suspension, the AGF said the state government no longer have powers to suspend LG chief executives following the July 2024 landmark judgment of the supreme court which granted autonomy to the 776 LGAs in the country.

According to Fagbemi, the legislative arm of the LGAs are the ones empowered to remove the chairmen if any infraction is committed.

He explained that neither the the state governors nor State Houses of Assembly have powers to remove the chairmen based on the ruling of the nation’s apex court.

Fagbemi said,“I am aware that since July 11 when the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment, local government administration has taken a new turn, different from the old order.

“At any rate, we are still studying the situation but before final reaction, it must be stated categorically and emphatically that for now, local government chairmen can only be removed through the legislative arm of the local government itself and not the State House of Assembly.“

The magazine reported that the apex court had in a landmark judgment in July this year ruled that the positions of the 776 LGAs in the country are constitutionally guaranteed, following a suit filed by the AGF at the Supreme Court challenging the overbearing influence of state governments on the third tier of government.

Lagos Speaker, Obasa, Denies   N17b Was Spent On Assembly Gate

Mudashiru Obasa

By Akinwale Kasali

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the House Assembly has denied the  allegation that a whopping N17 billion was spent to fix a gate at the House of Assembly.

The allegation was made by a group under the aegis of Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition.

Obasa, on Thursday, described the allegatio as spurious and funny.

The said Group had accused the Assembly of spending the amount to construct a gate, and  called  for an investigation.

Speaking at plenary, Obasa said the allegation stemmed from the fear of some people over 2027 which is still more than two years away.

Obasa further debunked the claim that the House spent N200 million on its recently organised 22nd thanksgiving service for staff.

“It is so funny. How much is the allocation of the Assembly in the whole year that we will decide to spend N17 billion on a gate? They even claimed that we expended 200 million on thanksgiving that did not hold.

“We are aware that at a period like this when we are approaching elections in 2027, we should expect such things. I think some people are scared, and I don’t know why.

“This House did not, and has not embarked on any such project. We are not that reckless. We had our thanksgiving last Friday and dignitaries from various parts of the State attended it,” the Speaker said.

Addressing further claims by the group about the alleged relationship between him and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, the Speaker denied attending the latter’s screening and confirmation by the National Assembly.

“They said that I was at the National Assembly when they were confirming the EFCC Chairman. I want to believe that there are CCTV cameras at the National Assembly to identify those who attended the event. The press must have written about it too. So the group should do more to confirm if I was there.

“This is just to deny the allegations in the interest of the public and not the writers because the writers are not those we should be joining words with,” the Speaker said.

The House, through its spokesperson, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, had addressed the allegations too, noting that the Assembly bases its activities on integrity, transparency and accountability.

“It is ludicrous the claim about constituency intervention funds and constituency project funds and their handling by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko as claimed by the group.

“One would have expected a self-acclaimed anti-corruption crusading group to do its groundwork before jumping across the fence with conviction that it hit a jackpot to malign an institution of repute in the name of politics.

“Simply put, the Lagos State House of Assembly does not have any such funds. The Assembly does not embark on constituency projects. Instead, once every year, the House holds stakeholders’ meetings simultaneously across the state where constituents have the opportunity to tell the lawmakers their expectations and make requests for the betterment of the state.

“These requests and expectations are compiled and sent to the executive arm of government for consideration as inputs in subsequent budgets. If this is what the group takes as constituency intervention or project funds, we are sure this explanation has given the required education, moreover, it is common knowledge that it is the responsibility of the Executive arm to execute such projects,” the earlier statement by Ogundipe read.

Lady Cleared Bank Account Of Blind Widow

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Anambra State Police authorities have assured that concerted efforts are underway to track down a middle aged woman who allegedly capitalized on the physical challenges of an elderly woman to clear her bank account.

In a viral video clip released Thursday  December, 19, 2024, the lady was captured by a bank CCTV, swapping an ATM Card of an  elderly, visually-impaired customer, at a transaction point in Nnewi Anambra State.

According to reports, the elderly visually- impaired widow had gone to the ATM point to carry out some transactions, but as usual was experiencing difficulties owing to her eye condition.

It was at this point that a middle aged lady offered to help her. Innocently, the elderly widow gave out her ATM card and the pin number.

But ,as it turned out ,the young lady had some other funny ideas ,as she was seen in the video clip swapping the elderly woman’s card with another.

Minutes after, the  “good Samaritan act”,  the blind woman began to receive a torrent of bank debit  transaction alerts  on her mobile phone.

The bubble was said to have burst, on Tuesday December 17, when the elderly widow stormed her bank, to lodge a complaint about the multiple alerts that she received.

It was at that  point, that a CCTV footage released by her bankers showed the devilish swapping of her ATM card by the young lady the offered to assist her.

The avalanche of alerts, received ,were later confirmed to be the withdrawal of about N2 million by the young lady from the account of her elderly victim.

In the video clip, the swindling lady is captured spotting red top and black trousers and, was clearly seen exchanging the blind woman’s original ATM card.

While narrating her ordeal on Thursday, the victim  said she was approached by the young lady with an offer to help her carry out her transactions.

” I went to the ATM to withdraw some cash ,but  couldn’t operate the machine properly because of my condition.

“A lady standing nearby offered to help me .She took my card ,got my pin and swapped it with an expired one.

“I was unaware of what had happened until I started receiving debit alerts on my phone. Within minutes, she had withdrawn over N2 million from my account.

“This is such a devastating experience, especially at a time when I desperately need funds to make some transactions”,the victim stated.

Although at the time of reporting her bankers had not officially reacted to the development, a source in the bank, however, informed that the bank’s CCTV clearly captured the young lady swapping the woman’s ATM card .

“The CCTV clearly shows the suspect swapping the victim’s ATM card and proceeding to another ATM to withdraw the money. This transaction is extremely wicked.”

The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, also, stated that investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the act.

He informed that the Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye has directed that nothing should be spared in the efforts to hunt down the person involved.

However, a few people have expressed surprise that as much as the sum of two million Naira was allegedly stolen as ATMs do not dispense more than N40, 000 per daily in a transaction.

OPINION: An Accidental Christmas Story

Azu Ishiekwene
Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

If I’ve learned anything these past 35 years of journalism, it’s looking for a story in every situation. It wasn’t different when I left home for the airport on December 14, except that this time, the story found me. My Uber driver started the conversation: “Are you Mr. Azu of LEADERSHIP?” he asked.

I confirmed I was but didn’t make much of his question since he could have gotten the information from Truecaller. I also found from my Truecaller that he was identified as “Doc. Jibrin.”However, in a country where people love big titles that mean nothing, anyone can call themselves anything.

Somehow, I tested my prejudice by asking him if he was a medical doctor. “I’m a paediatrician,” Jibrin replied. I paused in confusion. I have read many stories of graduate drivers or professionals doing odd jobs. Working odd jobs is hardly news in a country with 33percent unemployment, mainly among young graduates. However, being a paediatrician Uber driver in a country with a paediatrician-patient ratio of roughly 1:525 was new for me.

We got talking. I asked him how he became an Uber driver, and he told me it was something he did as a pastime when he was not on duty twice a week at a government hospital. He told me how being an Uber driver has allowed him to meet people and how many of his passengers responded in shock whenever he told them he was a paediatrician.

He told the story of one passenger, a wealthy businessman, who offered to use his license to open a medical facility, promising him heaven on earth, but he refused.

“He gave me his number and other contact details and asked me to think about it and get back to him. He said he was running a pharmacy using a nurse’s certificate and was thinking of something bigger. I declined politely,” Jibrin said. “Something about him just didn’t connect with me.”

I asked a bit more. Where did Jibrin go to school, and why did he become a paediatrician? He flipped the roles gently and charmingly, smiling and laughing as he did so. Based on my questions, he figured I must be a senior journalist and wanted to know more about me. Did I go to school in Nigeria? Were my parents well-to-do?

I told him that I grew up in Ajegunle, one of Nigeria’s most famous ghettos, and all the schools I’ve attended – from primary to university – have been in Nigeria. One thing journalism has done for me is that it has allowed me to travel, learn, expand my network, and sharpen my curiosity whenever I meet people like him.

He smiled again, and immediately, I retook my role as interlocutor. Why did he study paediatrics, and where?

“I love babies,” the young man, likely in his late thirties, said. “I’ve always been fascinated by their tenderness, innocence, and vulnerability. If you want to know about babies, watch parents when their babies are ill. Sometimes, you don’t know who is suffering more – the babies or their parents!”

He told me he attended Medical School at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife and returned to specialise in Paediatrics. At OAU, he had an encounter that would significantly impact his life. His best friend at medical school was Chima, a bright young Igbo man with whom he immediately struck a kindred spirit. As Jibrin told me the story of Chima, I watched his countenance change and his smile disappear.

Even though the incident happened nearly 10 years ago, the pain seemed fresh in his memory.

“When Chima told me he was travelling to the East, there was no way I could have guessed that would be the last time I would see him,” Jibrin said. “On his way, the bus in which they were travelling was ambushed by armed robbers. All the passengers, including Chima, were forced to lie face down on the road and shot many times. When I saw my friend’s body, I couldn’t recognise it. That picture of his bullet-ridden body is etched in my mind!”

Chima’s medical career was not the only unfinished business when he was killed. Apart from his career and traumatised friends, Chima also left behind a girlfriend who was pregnant at the time of his death.

“I decided,” Jibrin said, “that I would be responsible for his pregnant girlfriend and the baby.”

He was as good as his word. For the next several months and in a country where religion often divides, Jibrin, a Muslim from Gombe State in the North East, took upon himself the responsibility of looking after the pregnant girlfriend of his dead friend, a Christian from the South East.

When the baby was born, her mother named her Joy. “You should have seen the baby,” Jibrin said. “She looked so much like her father. In a way, her birth brought some closure to the wound that Chima’s death inflicted.”

Jibrin struggled after medical school but kept his commitment to his friend’s girlfriend and the new baby. “Chima’s younger brother knew about this,” Jibrin said. “But he is an apprentice somewhere and can’t stand on his own feet yet.”

Three years after Joy’s birth, something dramatic happened. Her mom came over to see Jibrin with Baby Joy and asked if she could leave her with him for that weekend because she wanted to travel.

“I couldn’t say no,” Jibrin recalled. “My girlfriend was staying with me, and even though she was reluctant initially, we both agreed that looking after Joy for one weekend wasn’t too much.”

And so, off Joy’s mother went. One weekend led to another and another. And she wasn’t coming back. Jibrin’s girlfriend started asking questions. At this time, Joy’s mother had become unreachable, and nothing he told his confused and angry girlfriend seemed to make sense. “She kept asking me to come clean, to level with her,” Jibrin said. “It soon became obvious she wanted me to confess what I had not done.”

The relationship broke up. Jibrin, unable to look after Joy and still find his footing as a young doctor, decided to take Joy to his elder sister in Jos. There, she asked all the difficult questions his girlfriend had asked and more. She begged Jibrin to tell her the truth: Was Joy his child?

He couldn’t convince her but managed to suspend her doubts. One or two years later, he got married after a problematic negotiation during which he told his new wife that she must accept and treat Joy as her daughter as a precondition for the marriage.

Fast-forward. Jibrin has three children—all girls—two younger ones aged six and three and his adopted daughter, Joy, who is now nine and in junior secondary school. “She tops her class,” he told me proudly as we drove into the airport.

And then he told me something else. He’s been wrestling with the question of how to raise Joy – as a Muslim, which he is, or as a Christian, which his friend Joy’s father was? “The matter has troubled me so much I had to seek advice from a cleric who said I should bring her up in my religion.”

As Jibrin dropped me off at the car park attached to the terminal building, I thought to myself: I think the cleric is right but for a different reason. Once you have formally adopted the child, how you raise her is entirely up to you. Most parents might agree, however, that once the child reaches a certain age, often young adulthood, what they do with their lives is entirely up to them.

And don’t be surprised if that includes creating new idols in a networked shrine with limitless potential for good and evil. It’s enough to know that you did your best by them while you could.

Ibadan Children party stampede

By Ayodele Oni

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has advised government to address poverty in the country to forestall occurrence of Ibadan Christmas party tragedy.

Obi described the tragic death of children from the incident as evidence of a systemic failure in Nigeria.

According to him, the fatal outcome of the event exposed the harsh realities in the country where children out of inequalities are exposed to such danger scrambling for mere Christmas gifts.

The LP Presidential Candidate said who said the news was devastating, maintained that leaders at all level must prioritize policies that address poverty to forestall any such outcome in the future.

Obi in a statement on Wednesday night on his X handle lamented that: “The devastating news of innocent children reportedly trampled to death during a Christmas celebration in Ibadan is both heart-wrenching and a stark reflection of the systemic failures that plague our nation today.

Peter Obi
Peter Obi: Advised government to address poverty in the country.

“This tragedy, which occurred during what should have been a moment of joy, highlights the harsh realities of our society—a country where the scramble for basics such as food, drinks, and small gifts often leads to unimaginable sorrow.

“How did we, as a people, reach a point where children—the very symbols of hope and the future—lose their lives in the pursuit of something as simple as Christmas gifts?

“This calamity exposes the deep inequalities, pervasive poverty, and desperation afflicting our nation.

“It also reveals a broader failure in event planning, crowd control, and the fundamental duty to safeguard human lives.

“This tragedy calls for deep reflection and decisive action from leaders at all levels. We must prioritize policies that address poverty, inequality, and equitable resource access while ensuring the highest safety standards for public events, especially those involving children.

“As we mourn these young lives, let us commit to building a society where such incidents are unthinkable.

“The measure of a nation’s greatness lies in its care for the vulnerable, and this moment should inspire us to create a safer, more inclusive Nigeria. We owe it to these children to ensure their deaths inspire lasting change.”
