Port Harcourt Refinery: Reduce Petrol Price To N899 Per Litre, Marketers Charge NNPCL

Petroleum marketers have appealed to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPLC to sell Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol to them at N899 per litre at the Port Harcourt Refinery.

The NNPLC recently disclosed that petrol price from its refineries have been reduced to N899 per litre.

The action also followed the reduction in the price of the product by the Dangote Refinery from N930 to N899.50, citing the need to bring succour to Nigerians during the yuletide.

Making the appeal on Sunday, the Publicity Secretary of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, PPROOAN, Joseph Obele, said the NNPCL has yet to reduce price in Port harcourt, saying marketers are still loading products at the old price.

He explained that marketers are still buying imported products from the refinery, and expect to start loading locally refined products soon.

Recall that the NNPCL disclosed recently that the Port and Warri Harcourt Refineries have bounced back to operations and petroleum products are being loaded from the facilities.

Obele however appealed to the oil company management to sell petrol to marketers in Port Harcourt at the same the product is being sold in Lagos.

According to him, “NNPC is still telling us to buy at a rate different from the rate they are selling to Lagos at the moment because of logistics. So, Port Harcourt retail outlet owners are not really comfortable with that. Hence, the Port Harcourt refinery will start servicing us this week.

“We are also requesting that the same rate NNPC is selling to our members at Lagos should be the rate they will be selling to us over here in Port Harcourt too. We are not really comfortable with that disparity.”

Asked whether or not marketers in Port Harcourt and environs have started buying directly from the NNPC refinery, he replied, “No, but it will commence this week. The trucks loading out are for the NNPC retail outlets only.”

He said the union is in talks with the NNPCL to stop price discrimination between Port Harcourt and Lagos marketers.

“We in Port Harcourt, we plead with the NNPC to sell to us at the same rate they are selling fuel to Lagos marketers. The difference is too much. It is N899 per litre in Lagos but N970 in Port Harcourt. It is far higher than that of Lagos.

“The way they explain it, it is like their own vessel will be bringing it and shipping it over to Port Harcourt depot for us to buy. So, we are now saying that since you will be selling directly to us from the refinery, you now have the stock available. Sell to us at the same rate you are selling to Lagos marketers.

“So, that’s where we are right now. Our request is that the NNPC should sell to us from the Port Harcourt refinery at the same rate they are selling the product to those in Lagos,” Obele said.

On December 21, 2024, the NNPCL announced reduction in its  ex-depot prices of petrol to N899 from N1020 per litre for oil marketers.

In the document released by the NNPC commercial department, the company shows the latest reduction based on the regional pricing scheme as follows: Lagos, N899.; Warri, N970; Oghara, N970; Port Harcourt, N970 and Calabar, N970.

Analysts have pointed out that the NNPCL took the action following Dangote Refinery’s reduction of price of petrol to marketers.

APC Kicks As Opposition Forces Mull Mega Party

0
Ibrahim Shekarau

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, says the party is the best thing to happen to Nigeria, dismissing plans by opposition forces in the country to dislodged it from power in 2027.

Bala Ibrahim, the APC Director of Publicity said opposition forces in the country must do more to kick the party out of power in  2027 because the party has the best agenda for the country.

Ibrahim, in a statement he signed on Sunday, said the party has the ‘best policies and programmes’ for Nigerians’, noting that whatever the opposition is planing will be a hard sell to Nigerians.

The APC reacted following reports that plans are in the offing by some northern political elements to form a mega party alongside their allies from the southern part of the country.

The angry politicians said the two main political parties in the country, APC and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have failed the country, and Nigerians need a break from them because they have no solutions to the country’s myriads of problems.

The politicians led by a former governor of Kano state, Ibrahim Shekarau has disclosed that they are working under the League of Northern Democrats, LND, to dislodged APC from power in 2027.

Made up of predominantly northern political leaders, the group has called on their counterparts from the southern part of the country to work with them to take over power in the next presidential election.

As part of their plans, the LND said efforts are ongoing to form a mega party capable of countering the ruling APC.

Umar Ado, the spokesman of the LND said the ruling party needs to be dislodged from power having failed to tackle the myriads of economic, social and security problems facing the country. It said the ruling party has been lying to Nigerians that they have the capacity to turn the country around.

Ado rued, “The undemocratic practices and mediocrity entrenched within the APC and PDP,” calling on Nigerians to bury the two leading political parties for good.

“This clarion call resonates deeply with the aspirations of many Nigerians yearning for a break from the vicious cycle of ineffectual governance of the PDP and APC, and especially among northerners,” he said.

Reacting, Ibrahim described LND’s plan as a mere ranting, assuring that the party will be returned to power in 2027, adding that the LND poses no threats the ruling party.  A

According to him, “It is not a threat to our party. The people are the final judges. Let them come on board and let’s see. What we want is a level-playing field. They will campaign and sell their manifesto.

“But we have the best agenda for Nigeria. We have the best policies and programmes that will benefit Nigerians. Our policies will yield positive results before 2027 and Nigerians will re-elect our party.”

Meanwhile, the magazine reports that the development is coming on the heels of clarion calls by some Nigerians on the leading opposition leaders in the country such as Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwakwanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, to join forces ahead the next presidential election to dislodge the APC from power.

The three politicians have recently denied such plans.

Alcibiades Reborn: The Sycophantic Journey of Reno Omokri

0
Valentine Obienyem and Reno Omokri

By Valentine Obienyem

I recently read Reno Omokri’s article titled “Why Peter Obi Has No Moral Authority to Criticise President Tinubu.” Predictably, it felt like navigating through a sycophant’s asylum – a place where logic is abandoned, and self-serving rhetoric reigns supreme. The piece, rather than present a balanced or thoughtful critique, was riddled with contradictions, and an almost comical level of bootlicking. It was yet another example of Reno’s ability to contort his narrative to suit his immediate interests, showcasing an astounding capacity for opportunism disguised as commentary. His article seemed less about addressing real issues and more about currying favour with the powers that be, leaving one with the surety that his allegiance lies with personal gain even if the country burns.

Lest we forget, Reno Omokri, who now sings praises of President Bola Tinubu as though he were a paragon of virtue, once unleashed a torrent of scathing invective against the very same man when the political winds seemed to favour his preferred candidate. It is both instructive and ironic to revisit those earlier declarations, for they lay bare the astonishing malleability of Reno’s convictions. With the fervour of a man certain of his position, Reno decried Tinubu as a “known drug lord” who, in his words, belonged not in the corridors of power but behind the bars of justice. He questioned Tinubu’s integrity with the zeal of a prosecutor, urging the collection of hair or urine samples to verify allegations of drug abuse – allegations he presented as irrefutable truths, backed by what he claimed were verified court documents from Chicago.

This was no casual criticism; Reno led protests in London, branding Tinubu a disgrace to leadership and declaring his opposition in terms so unequivocal that they echoed through media channels worldwide. In one memorable diatribe, he accused Tinubu of running away in the face of public condemnation, crowing over the supposed success of his #HarassTinubuOutofLondon campaign. His rhetoric was unyielding, his tone righteous, as he cast Tinubu as a symbol of everything that should be shunned in governance. Yet, today, the very same Reno lavishes praise upon Tinubu with an enthusiasm that borders on sycophantic adoration. Such a volte-face raises profound questions about the authenticity of his moral compass, inviting us to reflect on the nature of loyalty and the ease with which principles can be traded for personal or political expediency.

Reno Omokri’s transformation from fierce critic to ardent admirer of President Tinubu offers a masterclass in the art of political shape-shifting. His earlier invectives against Tinubu were nothing short of incendiary, painting a picture of a man unfit for public office. Take, for instance, Reno’s outright accusation regarding Tinubu’s alleged involvement in a heroin cartel. With dramatic conviction, he dared Tinubu to take him to court, boasting of his readiness to expose Nigeria to what he described as irrefutable documentary evidence. Reno’s rhetorical question – whether being a heroin drug lord was not worse than being a “yahoo boy” – dripped with moral outrage, presenting Tinubu as a figure whose very presence on the political stage was an affront to decency.

When Tinubu articulated his ambition to serve for eight years and handpick his successor, Reno’s response brimmed with indignation. He lambasted Tinubu for what he saw as hubristic presumption, accusing him of treating the Presidency as though it were a hereditary throne. His fury was palpable as he posed a rhetorical question dripping with disdain: “Is Tinubu God?” Reno’s critique extended to Tinubu’s disregard for the democratic process, portraying him as a man who had already anointed himself for re-election without consideration for the will of the electorate or the uncertainties of life.

Yet, perhaps the most startling pivot lies in Reno’s professed loyalty. Once an unwavering supporter of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he pledged himself entirely to Atiku’s victory, portraying this allegiance as absolute and unshakeable. However, once Tinubu assumed the mantle of leadership, Reno’s tone shifted dramatically. He now pledged his vote and vigorous support for Tinubu, invoking God as his witness. The juxtaposition of these two declarations underscores the fluidity of Reno’s convictions, raising profound questions about the motivations behind his rhetoric and the consistency of his principles.

In all honesty, what do you make of such a man? Reno Omokri’s behaviour, for those of us steeped in classical studies, evokes the memory of Alcibiades, the notorious Athenian whose opportunism and sycophantic tendencies made him one of history’s most infamous political chameleons.

Plutarch, in his “Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans”, provides a vivid portrait of Alcibiades, a figure whose charm, ambition, and lack of scruples allowed him to manipulate alliances for his own benefit. Alcibiades was a master of flattery and opportunism, praising and aligning himself with anyone who could further his personal goals. His alliances were never about loyalty to a cause or principle but about leveraging power and influence for his own advancement. He switched allegiances with ease, abandoning old friends and forging new ones whenever circumstances shifted in his favour. Like the reckless Athenian, he also learnt the art of trying to convince be appearing or wearing the clothes of those he is after. Consider what Plutarch wrote about him: “He would often change his manner of life and adapt himself to the habits and customs of those with whom he associated… When he was with the Spartans, he was austere and rigorous and wore their clothes; when he was with the Ionians, he was luxurious and effeminate… He could be whatever he chose to be, and he was never himself, except when he was alone.”

Today, Reno Omokri, like the Alcibiades of old, stands as President Tinubu’s most fervent defender, his zeal for the man surpassing even that of the most dedicated loyalists. His transformation from a sharp critic of Tinubu to one of his most enthusiastic apologists is nothing short of remarkable. However, it would be profoundly naïve to think that this newfound loyalty is driven by genuine ideological conviction or a deep belief in Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria. In reality, Reno’s passionate support is more a tactical manoeuvre than a matter of principle. He wants to secure appointment as if his life depended on that. His frequent publicised trips are also a gimmick to appear as if he were comfortable!

Beneath the surface of his zealous defense of the president lies a calculated strategy. Reno’s constant and often vitriolic attacks on Peter Obi are not motivated by any deep animosity towards Obi as a person. Far from it, these attacks are designed to serve a far more self-serving purpose: to garner favour with the powers that be. Obi, being the most vocal and committed opposition leader in the country, represents the most formidable challenge to the current administration. Reno, ever the opportunist, has identified this and seized upon it. By continuously engaging in attacks on Obi, he draws attention to himself, positioning himself as an ardent ally of Tinubu, someone whose loyalty is unwavering and whose support is indispensable.

His approach is a classic example of political opportunism at its most naked. For instance, on the 3rd of this month, Reno Omokri published another scathing attack on Peter Obi, and the irrationality of his claims raises serious doubts about his motives. How can anyone, with any semblance of reason, fault the President being advised to visit various states and observe the situation firsthand? This suggestion, rooted in common sense, advocates for a leader who is engaged with the reality on the ground, understanding the issues that affect the people. To dismiss such an idea reflects a deeper agenda, one that seems more concerned with undermining a potent voice than offering constructive criticism.

Similarly, Reno takes aim at Obi’s call for poverty alleviation policies that would directly benefit Nigerians, something that is fundamental to any nation’s progress. Instead of championing initiatives that can help uplift the most vulnerable, Reno derides the very notion of policies aimed at alleviating suffering, making it clear that his position is not about the well-being of the people but rather about maintaining a position of favour with the powers that be. In an even more perplexing move, he makes bizarre comparisons involving Tinubu’s and Obi’s children, as though he has no children of his.

Reno’s ability to turn a blind eye to reality becomes even more glaring when he attempts to trumpet fuel availability as an accomplishment, when  many Nigerians are unable to afford fuel due to skyrocketing prices. He ignores the fact that filling stations across the country are shutting down because of low patronage. How can anyone celebrate fuel availability when the majority of the population cannot buy fuel again thus tilting towards availability? Moreover, he celebrates foreign direct investments, turning a blind eye to the fact that existing companies are fleeing the country in droves, unable to operate under the current conditions. Reno’s version of progress seems detached from reality, rooted in platitudes that fail to address the pressing issues on the ground.

The ever-shifting positions and sycophantic behaviour exhibited by Reno Omokri are hard to ignore. His criticisms of Peter Obi are not based on principle or genuine ideological disagreements; they are instead a desperate attempt to secure personal gain and favour. If Reno achieves success in his relentless pursuit of recognition, it will not be because of his intellect or capability but rather because he is willing to trade integrity, honour, and principle for personal advantage. This, in itself, is the true tragedy of modern-day sycophancy. For those who truly value leadership rooted in service and accountability, Reno’s career is a clear case of how far one can fall when principles are sacrificed at the altar of personal ambition.

El Rufai Vows To Remain in APC To ‘Fight’ Tinubu

Malam Nasir El-Rufai

Nasir El Rurai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna state has threatened legal action against those who claimed he has left the All Progressives Congress,APC, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The claim is a wicked lie, the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT said, urging Nigerians to ignore those carrying the rumour.

The former governor made the rebuttal on his verified X handle on Sunday, saying he remains a member of the ruling APC.

“Please disregard the patent lies and rumours about my political affiliation. I have referred the lead peddlers of the fake news for further action by my lawyers,” the former governor said.

The magazine reported that the former governor became disgruntled with the ruling party after his quest to become a minister of the federal republic was dashed, following his failure to scale the Nigerian Senate screening hurdles.

Those close to him, said he blamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his misfortune in the APC, and has vowed to fight back in the next 2027 presidential election.

The disgruntled former FTC minister is planning to join forces with other opposition leaders to scuttle President Tinubu’s return to power, sources close to him informed the magazine.

But now that he has vowed to remain in the party, analysts said they are wondering whether he can figt the president from within.

Governor Umo Eno - Akwa Ibom State

By Ayodele Oni

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has fulfilled his promise to honour a female graduate that has just completed her national youth Corps Service and returned to her village in Cross River State to appreciate her father.

The Governor had promised to build a three bedroom apartment for the father of the lady for his determination to sponsor his daughter to university.

The lady, in a viral video decorated her father with her NYSC uniform and gave him a salute on her return to the village after her service year.

Governor Eno explained that his administration  decided to build a three-bedroom house for the parents of the female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who returned to her parents’ thatch house to thank her dad for sacrificing a lot to send her to school.

Eno pointed out that he was touched by the video clip showing the unidentified NYSC member returning home to praise her dad for choosing to live in a thatch house while spending his money to train her in school.

The NYSC member and her parents are from Cross River State, which shares a boundary with Akwa Ibom State.

A team from the Akwa Ibom State Government had visited the family in Cross River to identify them and begin building a house for them.

According to the Governor, “the moral lesson behind what that young woman did is for her to go back to that (thatch) house and make her father proud.”

The Governor stated that his gesture was also to encourage girl-child education and to encourage people that the man chose well.

”What moved us was that the father decided to sponsor her girl-child to University rather than building a house in the village. That girl today has brought back the house.

“The moral lesson we learnt in what that young woman did is that not all of these young persons will be proud to take the friends to the village. For this girl to be so proud to go back to that house and make the father proud, we thought we should honour her.”

Bandits Kill Miyetti Allah Leader, Kidnap Wives, As Katsina Police Rescues 18 Victims

Katsina State Chapter of Miyetti Amadu Surajo

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Acting Chairman of the Katsina State Chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria MACBAN, Amadu Surajo, has been killed by suspected banditry elements.

This is even as police on  Saturday night, January 4, 2025, announced the rescue of no fewer than 18 persons during a foiled a kidnap attempt.

The Katsina MACBAN leader was killed alongside two others during terrorists attack late on Saturday through the early hours of Sunday January, 5, 2025, in Mai Rana Community, in Kusada Local Council of Katsina State.

Several others were also reportedly injured by the suspected hoodlums who after killing the  MACBAN Chairman, equally abducted two of his wives and a daughter, a student at one of the public universities in the country.

However, one of his kidnapped wives, according to witness accounts has been released by the abductors.

Instructively, Surajo’s  predecessor in office ,Munir Lamido ,had gone missing early June last year in  rather hazy circumstances.

Surago who was then MACBAN Katsina State Chapter Secretary was asked to step in as the Acting Chairman following the sudden disappearance of Lamido.

Curiously, Lamido’s whereabouts were still unknown as at the time  his successor, Surajo, was killed Saturday night .

Since June 23, when he was declared missing by both the Katsina and Kaduna security agencies , only his personal effects, such as vehicle and handset phones have so far been recovered.

The killing of Surajo at a time the fate of his predecessor is yet to be resolved ,expectedly has generated tension and palpable anxiety both within his immediate community and Katsina state .

This is just as security has been enhanced in Mai Rana Village and environs ,within the Kusada Local Government to forstall a possible breakdown of law and order.

As at the time of reporting, the state Police Command and Katsina Government were yet to react to the incident.

But in a separate development, the Police informed that the  rescue of the 18 persons was sequel to a swift response to a distress call on the activities of some suspected hoodlums along the Funtua-Katsina -Gusau high way

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq, ASP, the Katsina State Police Command  noted that the kidnapping attempt involved occupants of four vehicles.

“On January 3rd, 2025, at approximately 2130 hours, the Faskari Divisional Police Headquarters received intelligence regarding armed bandits, armed with AK-47 riffles and firing indiscriminately who had ambushed four vehicles along the Funtua to Gusau high way.

“The vehicles involved included a maroon Toyota Avensis  traveling from Batsari to Yankara Village, a white DAF truck, a Pacars Canter  truck ,and a green DAF vehicle, all making their way to Funtua .

“The suspected kidnappers targeted these vehicles in an effort to abduct the passengers on board .

“Upon receipt of the report, the DPO of Faskari Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly mobilized operatives to the scene where a gunfight ensured.

“The team successfully repelled the armed bandits attack and rescued all 18 victims unharmed”,  the police stated.

The Command has assured that efforts are underway to track down the fleeing hoodlums.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP , Aliyu Abubakar Musa , while lauding the gallantry of the operatives called for more support and  cooperation from the public in the efforts to adequately protect lives and properties of the people.
