National Secretary Divides PDP, 14 NWC Members Back Okoye

Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Rt Hon Ude Okoye

The declaration by Senator Samuel Anyanwu penultimate week that he’s back to the position of the National Secretary appears not to have the support of the National Working Committee of the opposition party.

At least, no fewer than 14 NWC members have declared their support for Sunday Okoye, the former National Youth Leader of the PDP for the position. There are 17 members of the PDP NWC, the management organ of the party.

The party’s National Treasurer, Ahmed Mohammed made the position of the party known on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The party Mohammed said was in the state on a courtesy visit to Governor Simi Fubara as part of its reconciliation process to bring all the members together ahead the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the controversy that has trailed the National Secretary position, Mohammed said Amyanwu is on his own as the party is fully in support of Okoye based on a recent court judgment.

The Court of Appeal had recently affirmed Okoye as the Party’s Scribe, thereby dismissing Anyanwu claim to the position.

Surprisingly, Anyanwu who contested the last Imo state governorship election had stormed the PDP National Secretariat two weeks ago insisting that he remained in the position. He said, he has appealed the Court of Appeal judgment, and until the appellate court made a final ruling he remains the occupier of the office.

“As you can see, I’m in the office. As a matter of fact, the ruling of the Appeal Court judgment has been appealed at the Supreme Court, and there is a stay of execution. So, the position remains the way it is until determined by the Supreme Court,” Anyanwu said.

According to Mohammed, the former Imo governorship candidate has seized being a member of the NWC following the Appeal Court ruling.

He said there was no contrary judgement or ruling from a higher court to invalidate the appeal court’s decision.

Mohammed said, “the NWC are with Okoye as the national secretary of the party and would continue to work with him, and we equally request the support and backing of the governors to accept this Court of Appeal judgement.

“As you are aware, up to this moment, there is no court that set aside the ruling of the appeal court, and this is a case that they don’t have any stay or whatever.

“Fourteen of us, members of the NWC are in agreement to work along with the present National Secretary of the party.”

2027: PDP Plots Return To Power, Meet Govs

Umar Damagun - PDP Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says it’s poised to return to power in the country having lost the election at the centre on three occasions.

The National Treasurer of PDP, Ahmed Mohammed, made this declaration on Thursday when some members of the party NWC made a courtesy call on Rivers state governor Siminalaye Fubara in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital.

As part of the plan to sweep back to power, Mohammed said the leaders of the party have been meeting with major stakeholders in the party, particularly PDP state governors. The party must be united to be able to achieve the feat, Mohammed said.

Recall that the party lost power at the federal level to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, during the 2015 and 2019 and 2023 presidential elections. The major opposition party has also lost grounds in many states in the country, as it trails behind APC which has consolidated its position as the party of choice for Nigerians for three consecutive elections.

The PDP is trying to turn the situation around, Mohammed said noting that the party is trying to bring all the PDP governors and other stakeholders together.

As part of the reconciliation process, the PDP National Treasurer said the NWC has met with some PDP state governors including, Seyi Maknide of Oyo state; Douye Diri of Bayelsa; Bala Mohammed of Bauchi; adding that other governors will be consulted.

Plateau State Governor, Mutfwang Mourns General Useni

By Ayodele Oni

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has bemoaned the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Useni on Thursday  January 23, 2025, in a Paris Hospital.

In a statement  signed on his behalf by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the governor described the demise of General Useni as a tremendous loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation.

According to Mutfwang, General Useni’s exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to service were remarkable.

He said Useni’s death has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape noting that the General’s  tireless efforts to promote peace and security, especially in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, would forever be remembered.

Mutfwang recounted the career of the late General, whom he said served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.

“After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued his service to the nation. He served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).”

Mutfwang hailed General Useni’s life of selfless service, noting his profound contributions to the military, politics, and his community.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.

Useni suffered a personal tragedy when he lost his loyal wife, Julie, and their last son, in the ill-fated defunct EAS Airline plane crash in Jos.

The Military has lost one of its most popular retired Army Generals.

Lt General Jeremiah Useni, rtd, passed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

For long, especially, since after the 2023 Presidential Election, many had wondered about the loud silence and conspicuous absence of the retired General, who was also a politician, from public discourse. It turns out he had been down with ill-health known to only family and close friends and associates.

On Thursday, the fun-loving General, known by many as a jolly good fellow, and fondly called “Jerry Boy”, succumbed to ill-health and so, embarked on the lonely journey all human beings will eventually embark on.

A native of Plateau State, Lt General Useni enlisted into the Nigeria Army at the age of 14. He gradually, but steadily, climbed the ranks and eventually retired as a Lt. General.

His career in the Army was rewarding as he held a number of high profile positions.

He was the Military Governor of defunct Bendel State, Quarter-Master General of the Army, Minister of Transportation, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, all as an Army Officer.

Indeed, he almost became Nigeria’s Head of State on the death of maximum Military Ruler, General Sani Abacha, being the most senior Army Officer at the time. But that privilege was conceded to then Chief of Defence Staff, General Abdulsalmi Abubakar who was on the brink of being retired by Abacha, if Abacha had not died suddenly. At the time, Useni, a bosom friend of Abacha, was Minister of the FCT.

It was not all rosy for him in the Army. Useni while in service, lost his beloved wife, Julie, and his last son in the ill-fated defunct EAS plane crash in Jos, Plateau State.

Away from that personal tragedy, he also came under the very false suspicion of being in the know of how/why Abacha died because both of them were allegedly together in the couple of hours leading to Abacha’s death.

But he overcame the personal tragedy and false allegation, and on retirement, plunged head-on into Politics.

He was the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, and later, became a Senator and represented Plateau South Senatorial Zone. He also, surprisingly, ran for the office of the Governor of Plateau State, and lost to now Senator Simon Lalong.

Announcing Useni’s passing Thursday night, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutsfwang, described Useni’s passing  as a  tremendous loss to Nigeria, the Army and Plateau State.

“If We Allow State Police Many People Will No Longer Go Back Home” – Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Adesina Soyooye

Out of office as a Governor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has made an about-turn on his support for the establishment of State Police.

When the Minister was the Governor of Rivers State, he was in favour of the establishment of State Police to help stem insecurity. But, now, out of the Governor’s seat, and would no longer be in a position to have the State Police under his charge, the Minister seems to have changed his mind.

He sees nothing but danger if, and when, it is established.

His reason: He says it would be a weapon of witchhunt in the hands of State Governors, and any opponent of a State Governor would be charged of kinds of crimes, including armed robbery and murder, and could be killed innocently.

The Minister who spoke at a recent media chat emphasized that Nigeria was not ripe for State Police as it had no strong institutions to accommodate such.

Wike: “In Nigeria, what system do we run? Is Abuja different from Nigeria when you talk about State Police? People have been recommending State Police and Community Policing.

“Knowing where we are and where we are from, if you allow that (State Police), so many people will not come out of their houses. So, I said, let’s try it first and see how it works.

“But so many people said there’s no need to try, that we have seen it all; that if we allow State policing today, nobody would oppose any State Governor. It is either you would die for murder or armed robbery. Our institutions are not independent from manipulations. It would lead to autocracy in States”

Since the clamor for State Police began, ostensibly to help fight insecurity, almost all the State Governors are in support. But not a few people believe the clamor  is for selfish reasons. They say the Governors would use it to persecute their political opponents.

Wike Thrives On Drama, Divisiveness” – Mohammed Bauchi Gov, Tackles FCT Minister

0
Bala Mohammed and Nyesom Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of biting the fingers that fed him.

An angry Mohammed held this opinion in reaction to the recent Press interview held by Wike in Abuja.

Wike had, last Sunday, during a media chat spoke  condescendingly of the Chairman of Board of Trustees, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Adolphus Wabara. The Minister said that if Wabara was his father, he would have since disowned him. He, also accused Wabara of corruption. Proof: Wike alleged that Wabara was removed as  Senate President by then President Olusegun Obasanjo over issues which bordered on corruption. Wike, also, as has been his usual since the run-up to the 2023 Presidential Election, ran down the PDP, a party under which he was a two-term Governor of Rivers State, and before then, a Minister of State.

In response, a calm Wabara said he wouldn’t descend to Wike’s level. As for being corrupt, Wabara said Nigerians know who that cap fits.

But reacting to Wike in a statement he issued, Governor Mohammed said Wike simply holds “bombastic media chats.” He accused the Minister of turning round to always denigrate the PDP, a platform, Bala reminded him, on which back he climbed to become a star in politics. The Governor expressed shock that Wike offered himself as a vessel to be used against the PDP instead of appreciating the Party.

He dismissed Wike as a erratic, a fair-weather friend, and one whose “personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles, and collective interests.” He also dismissed Wike as one who thrives “on drama and divisiveness.”

Mohammed: “His (Wike’s) recent media outburst was yet another reminder of his transactional approach to politics where personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles and collective interests.”

Distancing himself from Wike’s behavior, the statement compared the two Mohammed and Wike. “Unlike Wike who thrives on drama and divisiveness, Sen. Bala Mohammed has always understood that politics is not a game of self-serving theatrics but a platform to serve the public good.”

The Governor, also, described Wike as erratic and unreliable. He said: “Wike’s erratic behavior and opportunistic alliances expose him as an unreliable and fair-weather friend  – traits that alienate even those who once stood by him.”

Governor Mohammed doubles as the Chairman of PDP Governors Forum.

Reno And The Art Of Bootlicking: A Study In Political Sycophancy

0
Valentine Obienyem and Reno Omokri

By Valentine Obienyem

Anyone interested in observing the various shades of sycophancy should take the time to examine Reno Omokri’s antics. Simply because of the prospect of an appointment, he has shamelessly resorted to bootlicking President Tinubu and his wife, Remi.

As if that were not enough, Reno has now turned his attention to licking Seyi Tinubu’s boots. Seyi, who is young enough to be his son! At this rate, it is only a matter of time before Reno begins bootlicking Seyi’s own son.

Recently, he cited Trump as an example of presidents working with their children to justify his sycophantic position that Seyi Tinubu should even become the number two man to his father. However, just because Trump did something does not make it a universal standard. What about the numerous Western leaders who avoided nepotism? If Reno truly wanted to make his argument meaningful, he should have drawn examples from Africa. Leaders like Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo, Idriss Déby of Chad, and Omar Bongo of Gabon worked closely with their children, who eventually succeeded them in office. If these African leaders did it, why wouldn’t Reno support such a practice?

I also hear Reno is lobbying to write a biography of President Tinubu. If that is true, he may soon find himself at odds with individuals like Bayo Onanuga, who are already well-positioned for such tasks. Reno hasn’t even joined Tinubu’s inner circle, yet he is attempting to outshine and outsmart those who are already there. One can only imagine the extent of his sycophancy if he manages to secure a spot within Tinubu’s camp. In fact, Tinubu’s loyalists are reportedly deliberating on this audacious behaviour with growing concern.

I have said it before: many Nigerians are capable of what Reno is doing. The difference, however, lies in integrity. If Reno eventually secures an appointment through his shameless bootlicking, it will not be due to any exceptional talent or potential. It will simply be because he lacks integrity and is willing to do anything for the sake of an appointment.

Desperation is a dangerous trait. When someone carries such desperation into government, it creates divisions and friction among colleagues. Mark my words: this kind of behaviour will only lead to chaos, and Reno’s actions will be no exception.

Steve Osuji’s Jibber-jabber On Uzodimma’s Wedding Anniversary Ball

0
Oguwike Nwachuku and Steve Osuji

By Oguwike Nwachuku

On January 20, the day the 47th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump was sworn in, I deliberately made out time to watch his Inauguration Ball the way many others did. Don’t ask me what I was looking out for because you will soon know.

Trump and the wife, Melania, who is the First Lady of the US were looking splendid in their outfits. In fact, while Melania made a bold fashion statement with her attire, looking glamorous in her accessorised matching black satin choker necklace adorned with a silver pendant, Trump looked dapper in his black tuxedo with a matching bowtie and white buttondown shirt.

Even the Vice President, JD Vance and his wife, the Second Lady of the US, Usha Vance, as well as other relatives of the First and Second families such as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump (Jnr) and Kai Trump, among others actually turned up in resplendent outfits.

Nothing was spared to make the Trump Inauguration Ball worth the while and that is what it should be in a celebration mood that involves First families, whether they are Presidents or Governors.

Planning an event where the President or the Governor is expected to celebrate must be done with the intention of making it the best. No excuses must be entertained, whether in terms of fashion, food, music, quality of guests, the ambience and more.

Suffice it to say that events of that magnitude provide an avenue for a take away in the area of marketing, fashion designing, interior decoration, food business, music and generally, entertainment.

Fashionistas will always have their day in the sun after attending or watching such occasions if the opportunity provides itself.

Yours sincerely has taken time to lay the above foundation so that readers of this piece will appreciate the gobbledygook that my brother and senior professional colleague, Mr. Steve Osuji, wrote in his recent column, Espresso.

Captioned the “grandmother of all parties” by the author, the claptrap, nay highly folderol essay, has as usual exposed the underbelly of my good friend, brother and colleague as an unrepentant mischief maker who knows the truth but hides behind his finger to deceive his readers. I shall explain shortly.

Not many people have forgotten that sometime in 2023, July to be precise, I had cause to chide my senior colleague, Steve, for using this same column to defend and support the unbecoming demeanor of a notorious unprofessional broadcaster in Imo State whose stock in trade is the resort to false alarm over government activities just to attract attention and deceive the people.

To the greatest surprise of many, including yours sincerely, when the fellow had an issue with the law enforcement agents, and the source and cause of his arrest and subsequent detention made known to all, Steve, as an unconscionable sympathiser, set out to change the narrative in his Espresso column, all in an attempt to demonise the government of Sen. Hope Uzodimma.

Let me come back to his recent write up on “grandmother of all parties” since we already have an idea of the character of the person who is the author.  But before I proceed let us get certain facts right regarding mortals and celebrations.

Most human beings like to celebrate three major things in life – birth of a child (birthdays), marriage (weddings) and achievements (may be promotions, house warming, graduation, survival from ugly incident, etc).

Therefore, that Hope Uzodimma and his beautiful wife, Chioma as the First Lady of Imo State celebrated their 10th year wedding anniversary falls within the realm of an occasion worth celebrating. After all, a decade in a marriage is not a joke.

They owe no one any excuse for doing so, including Steve, who tried to hide under their joyous moment to act true to type, which is to see nothing good in what the Governor does. Sheer hatred.

Even if we are to interrogate the wedding anniversary party, is there any petition written by anyone that suggests Imo State resources were used for it? Does Hope Uzodimma, a man of class and known for good living, look to Steve like someone who would deploy Imo State resources for his personal event given the array of persons he has remained their benefactors both as a private sector person and a politician?

Did Steve want the First Lady of Imo State to attend her own event looking tattered and shabby simply because of what people with the same mindset like him would say? Or, is Steve saying that because Hope Uzodimma is Governor he should be immune from celebrating landmark events in his life like his birthday, his wedding anniversary or any other occasion of joy, or even associating with such joyous moments as they affect his immediate family members?

Can Steve swear that since five years Hope Uzodimma mounted the saddle as Governor this is the first time he would be seeing Flavour perform at Government functions in Imo?

I think it smacks of mischief, wickedness and even hatred, for Steve to disrespect the Office of the Governor and by a extension, his personality and the personality of guests from Imo and outside, including the Governor’s colleagues and associates, who happily joined the First Family to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Did I hear Steve allude to Imo as a captured State? Did he also claim that Imo has fallen behind amongst the South East States? Is it not possible that Steve was hallucinating or in deep slumber when he thoughtlessly compared the government of Uzodimma with that of former Governor Rochas Okorocha?

I cannot believe that my friend and brother Steve has degenerated to this level of writing his column from information he picks from ill informed characters in beer parlours and “food is ready” eateries in the suburbs. Who did this to Steve?

Let’s face it, how is Imo a captured State? And captured by who? I do hope Steve, by now, must have known that the train had departed from the Station with out his knowledge. Can someone, please, remind him that the Imo State he was used to has, since the past five years of Hope Uzodimma’s Shared Prosperity 3-R Government, charted a new course of irreversible socio-economic and even political developmental trajectory.

He may be seeing the indices all over the State, including reading about them, but because he remains fixated on the old ways, and harbours a genre of hatred for the Captain of the Ship he does not even have reasons for doing so, he appears confused, hence helplessly churning out inexplicable gibberish, sorry jibber-jabber.

By now, Steve must have learnt something from my often remark that, “we did not come to Imo to joke.”

Even if he pretends to be blind, deaf and dumb, people around him are aware that the Owerri-Okigwe road that takes Steve to his home, and which the two administrations he was part of were not able to fix, is now one of the best roads around, courtesy of the Hope Uzodimma reconstruction, rehabilitation and recovery government he loathes so much to hear.

But Steve is not in any way challenged  health-wise. And I know he knows that the Owerri-Orlu road, Owerri-Umuahia road, the MCC-Uratta-Toronto road, the Naze-Nekede-Ihiagwa road, Mgbidi-Omuma-Akata-Okporo are part of the more than 190 kilometres of roads initiated and already completed by this administration, with ongoing work progressing speedily on other roads across the State totalling 380 kilometres.

Steve knows that the Hope Uzodimma administration he is scandalising for no reason has made a lot of impact in the health of Imolites, building Health Centres across the 305 Electoral Wards and three brand new General Hospitals at Omuma, Egbema and Oguta. He knows that the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu has been enhanced to carter to the health needs of the people, and complementing activities at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri Teaching Hospital which Hope Uzodimma single-handedly made possible. If Steve is not benefitting from the State’s health insurance scheme by choice his relatives are, and he knows.

I do not know the yardstick Steve was using to place Imo behind other States in the South East other than recourse to dangerous politics of seeking the attention of the leadership of those States as a way of furthering his mischief against his own governor. What the Igbo would call oka nma na ama ( literarily meaning, one who feels that outside is better than his home).

Is his comparison of Uzodimma with Okorocha not funny? I am sure he may not know that those who read his line on that would be laughing at him. They will be wondering if Steve actually lives in the country.

Regardless, I challenge Steve to visit just one of the signature projects of his new mentor, Okorocha, like their famed Imo International Conference Centre (IICC), now undergoing proper rebuilding, rehabilitation, recovery and renamed Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre ( EIICC) and see if he will not ask God to forgive him for such careless comparison, and for deliberately undermining the person and office of his Governor.

Truth is that Steve thinks he is undoing the government of the day without knowing that he is hurting his own integrity by churning out falsehood and raising the bar of fiction writing above factual reportage, the latter being the hallmark of the profession we both belong.

But is Hope Uzodimma against criticism? The answer is no. If anything, he welcomes them with open arms and mind so long as they are constructive and could be relied upon to make amends.

Not long ago, a Skill Acquisition Centre, at the National Open University of Nigeria Ezeoke Nsu, Mbano was completely raised by hoodlums. I cannot remember if Steve, the word Smith statesman who happens to come from that political zone deployed his writing skill to roundly condemn the dastard act. My intuition tells me that if he did, he would have also blamed it on Hope Uzodimma’s administration or the often usual imaginary Fulani herdsmen.

I do not know how often Steve uses his Espresso to kick against the activities of none state actors and their sponsors who, for years now, have remained hell bent on putting our State on the edge by fueling insecurity.

I cannot also remember if Steve has devoted any of his pieces about the properly reconstructed Imo State House of Assembly Complex which one of the governments he was part of abandoned as if it didn’t matter. Please, can anyone draw my attention to any of his write ups commending the Urban renewal projects in Owerri, whether roads, traffic signs (junction improvements projects), modern markets, the erosion control mechanism, the completely rebuilt Government House premises, et al?

To him, they don’t count as what he ought to focus on to educate his audience, and as long as they are in the interest of the people and can bring accolades to Hope Uzodimma’s administration. What matters to him, really, are the things that promote fear, hatred, distrust, disharmony, insecurity and generally, the things that cast the leadership of the State Government in bad light before outsiders and a miniscule Imolites who think exactly like him.

Steve, take it from me, I repeat that “we didn’t come to Imo to joke.” If you keep an open mind, you will soon thank God that Hope Uzodimma was your Governor for eight years. You may not like his face, you may not like his courage, but one thing you can be sure of, and which we are confident about, is that Imo will never be the same again after Hope Uzodimma’s intentional efforts to reset it for the good of all, including you after eight years in the saddle. Never!

Suspended Edo Council Chairmen Caution Banks

0
Monday-Okpebholo

By Suleiman’ Anyalewechi

The 18 suspended Edo State Local Council Chairmen, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, warned against any attempt by individuals and groups to fiddle with funds belonging to the Local Government Areas.

The Source reports that the All Progressive Congress, APC, led administration in the State, had, on December 15, 2024, controversially suspended the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Council Officials.

The State authorities had cited the refusal of the Council Officials, to make available their financial books to the State’s constituted “Asset Verification Committee as a major reason for the action

The suspension order has since been challenged by the Council Chairmen and the PDP at the Courts.

In a notice issued by their lead counsel, Oluwole Uzzi, the embattled Council Chairmen cautioned banks in the country against dealing with unauthorized persons or groups, apart from the legitimately elected officials of the Local Councils.

The notice warned of serious legal consequences for any defaulting financial institutions.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court of Nigeria had, in a landmark verdict in 2024, established the financial autonomy of the Third Tier of Government.

The Country’s apex court had, among other things, ordered the direct remittance of Federal Allocations to the Councils, as well as the withholding of funds accruing to the ones which leaderships were not democratically elected.

Instructively too, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had faulted the suspension order on the grounds that it is against the grains of the Supreme Court’s pronouncement on the autonomy of Local Government Area.

The Suspended Council Chairmen noted that any banks ignoring the notice will be seen to be violating the Supreme Court ruling, as well as subsisting Court injunctions by Edo State High Court.

The Chairmen urged  banks to resist attempts by unauthorized persons to operate existing accounts of the Councils or to open new ones without the expressed approvals of the democratically elected Officials.

“The implications of ignoring this warning are severe because you will not only risk facing legal actions, but would damage your reputation and compromise your relationship with the Local Government Councils.

“In the light of this development, it is essential for you to exercise extreme caution when dealing with the accounts of the 18 LGAs”, the Chairmen stated.
