0
Tuface and Annie

By Akinwale Kasali

Barely few hours after media personality, Toke Makinwa warned that Innocent Ujah Idibia, popular as Tuface will be held responsible if anything happened to his estranged wife, Annie Idibia, another celebrity has come to the defence of the African Queen crooner.

Following the Sunday’s revelation by Tuface that he and his wife have filed for divorce, Makinwa came to the defence of Annie saying women must come to her defence against what she termed an unfair treatment by her husband.

According to her, Annie has been mentally unstable since the divorce announcement by Tuface.

Defending Tuface, popular social media personality, Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, cautioned Makinwa, criticizing her attacking Tuface.

Toke had taken to the Instagram criticizing Tuface for announcing his divorce from his wife, Annie, on social media.

In her post, she expressed strong disapproval and declared her intention to “fight for Annie.”

VDM however responded with a strong warning to Toke Makinwa, saying, “It seems all the Nigerian women have had a meeting to throw hate on 2Face. First thing first, if anything happens to 2Face, we go pick all of una, especially Toke Makinwa. Make nothing touch 2Face ooo. Yes, because all I see here is double standards.”

He sternly warned Toke Makinwa that if anything happens to Tuface, she would be held responsible.

On her part, songstress Tiwa Savage also took the side of Annie,  describing Tuface to be inhumane and inconsiderate for bring such sensitive issue to the social media.

Savage accused Tuface of abandoning Annie for her and Makinwa to care off, after making her go through this difficult times.

On Sunday, Tuface took to the instagram to state that he and Annie, who he shares two kids with, have been separated for a while and recently filed for divorce.

He wrote “Hello to my beautiful people of all FEDERATIONS.

WELL THIS THING I HAVE TO SAY IS SHORT BUT ALSO LONG…. I AND ANNIE MACAULAY HAVE BEEN SEPARATED FOR A WHILE NOW. AND CURRENTLY FILED DIVORCE… I WOULD GRANT A PRESS RELEASE SOON TO SAY MY STORY..NOT BECAUSE IT IS ANYONE’S RIGHT TO KNOW ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE; BUT BECAUSE I LOVE MY PEOPLE AND I NEED THEM TO KNOW MY INNOCENCE OR OFFENSE. STAY BLESSED MY PEOPLE. I LOVE YOU ALL.”

Not long after,  the post was removed from the Instagram, heightening more speculations about the couple.

Tuface would later post a video on Instagram reinforcing his earlier position that the couple is no longer together.

Annie has yet to speak on the divorce saga.

CSOs Seek Intervention In Alleged Sexual Harassment Against FUOYE VC,  ICPC  To Take Over Case

Prof Abayomi Fasina - FUOYE VC

By Ayodele Oni

Embattled Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof Abayomi Fasina, has been invited by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegation of sexual harassment of a married female staff of the institutiin.

The Commission, which has commenced an investigation of the Vice Chancellor said he would be invited next week for questioning.

The invitation followed a petition written to the commission by a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and received on Monday, January 27, 2025.

The signatories to the petition include Gender Mobile Initiative, Baobab for Women’s Human Rights, Education as a Vaccine, BIGIF, BraveHeart Initiative and Hope Behind Bars.

They underscored the importance of the case, describing it as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and fostering accountability in public institutions.

The CSOs demanded transparency, accountability, and justice in the sexual harassment case involving Fasina and a married subordinate in the University, Engr Folashade Adebayo, the Deputy Director at the Directorate of Works and Services in FUOYE.

The VC was alleged to have pressured and harassed the female staff member for sex. Adebayo had resisted the VC’s sexual advances, leading to her removal from the office she occupied.

Adebayo reportedly wrote a letter to the Governing Board of FUOYE for intervention with setting up of a panel to investigate the matter.

While calling for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Fasina, the CSOs urged the ICPC to ensure that justice is served in the matter.

The petition, submitted on January 27, 2025, was addressed to the ICPC Chairman and copied to key stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Inspector-General of Police, and relevant Senate and House Committees of Representatives Committees.

The petition described the alleged actions of the VC as a “gross abuse of authority, contravention of institutional ethics, and a violation of Nigeria’s legal frameworks on workplace harassment and gender-based violence.”

The CSOs expressed a lack of confidence in the panel constituted by the Governing Council, given the biases running through its terms of reference.

The petitioners demanded a thorough and independent investigation by the ICPC into the allegations, protection, and support for the victim, including legal, psychological, and social assistance.

Other demands include a review of FUOYE’s internal policies on sexual harassment and the implementation of systemic reforms, as well as legislative oversight by relevant Senate and House Committees to address institutional failures in handling sexual harassment cases in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The signatories to the petition expressed confidence in the ICPC’s ability to ensure justice and urged all stakeholders to prioritize transparency and fairness in addressing the case.

They called on the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to strengthen its anti-harassment frameworks and protect victims of workplace abuse.

An official of ICPC confirmed that “We have received the petition, and it’s receiving attention in the relevant quarters in ICPC. The allegations against Professor Abayomi Adesina are weighty, and he will be invited next week for questioning.”

“After Kneeling Down To Collect Campaign Funds, I am Surprised Governor Mohammed Is Calling Wike,  Transactional Politician” – Dogara

Yakubu Dogara

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst the ongoing face off between Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state, and Nyesom Wike,  Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has described Governor Mohammed as a serial betrayer.

Dogara, in a statement on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, noted that the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Governors Forum, has turned against, almost, all the people that stood by  him in trying times.

Dogara expressed shock that Governor Mohammed, after all the invaluable assistance, could call the FCT Minister a transactional politician.

The Source reports that Governor Mohammed and Wike, in the past two weeks have been exchanging hot words over issues concerning the fate of the PDP as a party.

Bala Mohammed and Nyesom Wike

While Governor Mohammed has been unsparing in his accusation of Wike as tye mastermind of the  crisis that has held down PDP, as well as working for the All Progressive Congress, APC, the FCT Minister has insisted that the Bauchi Governor lacks leadership capacity.

The Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is, also, from Bauchi expressed serious surprise that Governor Mohammed could brand Wike a transactional politician ,after  hugely  benefitting from the same person.

According to Dogara, Governor Mohammed was in a very dire financial situation during the count down to the 2019 general elections, but was rescued by Wike who was then Governor of Rivers state.

Besides, Dogara credited the FCT Minister for the 2018 PDP primaries victory of Governor Mohammed, whose opponent, Senator Abdul Ningi, was said to. be  in total control of the PDP structure in the State.

But according to Dogara, Wike played a critical role both in the upstaging of Senator Ningi and the 2019 general elections proper where Mohammed emerged as the Governor.

The former House of Representatives Speaker informed that after seeking assistance, Wike gladly provided both financial and logistical support needed to secure the position of Governor Mohammed.

” Wike bore all costs from providing a private jet to flying Chief Dan Osi Orbih to Bauchi to personally ensure Mohammed’s emergence as the PDP flag bearer

Wike appointed Chief Orbih ,as an ally to head the Bauchi State PDP Primaries panel with the mandate to ensure the victory of Mohammed.” Dogara stated.

The former Speaker noted that the Governor faced a serious financial challenge pre-2019 elections.

According to him, a fundraiser held at the Sheraton Hotels Abuja, could only yield a paltry N48 million, a development that all the more piled financial pressure.

But after once again leading a delegation to solicit for assistance, according to Dogara, Wike not only provided financial support ,but also donated a private jet  for Mohammed’s campaign.

” Wike, despite his grievances with Mohammed from their time as Ministers under former President Goodluck Jonathan, still supported him.

“Mohammed even knelt before Wike to collect the funds and promised to change his ways.

“It is shocking that Bala Mohammed, who had no financial capacity for his campaign, now has the audacity to call Wike  “transactional”, Dogara noted.

Obasa, Impeached Lagos Speaker, Faces Fraud Probe

Mudashiru Obasa

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State House of Assembly, under the Speakership of Hon. Moji Meranda is  set to  probe the just impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Olukayode Ogundipe, LAHA Spokesperson, disclosed in an interview that the House, on resumption, when Obasa is physically present, will begin to  probe of Obasa for alleged fraudulent activities.

Ogundipe said, “On the other allegations against him, when he is on the ground physically, those ones will be taken care of.

“There are other things we’ve also been hearing about different amounts of money being spent by him. We felt we didn’t know how they got the record of those, but the ones we have, when he’s seated with us, actions will be taken.”

As regards the possibility of the Assembly submitting a petition to anti graft agency,  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the ex-Speaker, the Assembly spokesperson, representing Oshodi Constituency I, said, “That will be expatiated when he’s on the ground. Probably a committee will be set up to look into it or probably it will also be looked at by the leadership of the House.

“Those formalities as per procedures will be followed to the letter. So I’m sure you should expect the House to react to that when the time comes.”

Ogundipe in the interview stated  that the former Speaker is still one of them and will continue to remain one of them and the process of his removal was constitutional.

It would be recalled that on Obasa’s arrival from the United States of America while addressing his Mandate Movement, MM, Supporters, he said his removal was unprocedural, insisting that he remained the authentic Speaker.

“If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it.”

However, he seems to have calmed down over his claim to the Speaker’s seat. He has moved out of the Speaker’s official residence to which he returned to after his US trip.

Obasa was impeached as Speaker on January 13th, 2025, following allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriations leveled against him.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has cautioned  hoteliers and others within the hospitality industry in the State against deliberately making their facilities available to criminal elements.

In  a statement issued on Monday January, 27,2025 its spokesperson, Timfon John DSP, the Police warned that any hotels found to be  harbouring criminal elements or playing host to criminal  activities will be subjected to raids and  closure pending the conclusion of investigations.

The State Police Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare who issued the marching order at an interactive session with hotel operators and other critical stakeholders within the industry ,at the state Command headquarters in Uyo, emphasized the urgent need for collaboration to effectively curb the rising trend of criminal elements using hotels as operational base .

He explained that available intelligence has shown that some criminals in the State are either hiding in hotels or operating from them.

CP Azare therefore urged hotel operators ,and mangers to be vigilant and monitor the activities of their guests.

He also called for the maintenance of accurate records of persons lodging in their establishments .

” It is your responsibility to ensure that your premises are not used as safe haven for criminals .Any hotels found to be harbouring or covering criminal elements will leave the Command with no option than to raid the premises and shut them down for investigations” the CP warned .

He stressed the importance of  hoteliers ,and managers reporting suspicious individuals and activities to the Police.

He deplored a situation whereby stakeholders wait until crime is committed before reporting to the police.

State Of The Nation: Nigeria’s Democracy In Danger; Atiku Blames Leaders

0
Atiku Abubakar
Atiku Abubakar, ADC presidential candidate.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has blamed Nigeria’s leaders for the state of democracy in the country. He said the country’s democracy is currently in a sorry state, saying warnings by experts that it will get to this stage were largely  ignored.

The 2023 PDP Presidential candidate said the situation has become worse under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which he accused of capturing the country, saying the country can only be rescued if the opposition parties unite to save the situation.

The former PDP candidate spoke in Abuja, the nation’s capital during a political conference, attended by mostly the opposition leaders in the country.

The magazine reports that apart from Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi also attended the conference.

Obi however said he’s not interested in the formation of a coalition whose aim is to capture power at the centre, saying he’s only interested on how to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

According to Abubakar, the nation’s democracy has ‘deteriorated’ and ‘eroding’ despite warnings  over the years, from his and other lovers of good governance that the situation will get worse.

He explained that he’s one of those that fought for the return of democracy in the country, and he will ensure its entrenchment because he believes that constitutional democracy is the best for country and her people.

Abubakar said, “There’s no doubt that our democracy is at a crossroads. Put simply, it is at the risk of eroding completely. And it is not caused by one single person or one single administration. In fact, a number of us have been warning over the years that we may come to this pass if we lose our vigilance and fail to take corrective actions to protect and deepen our democracy.

“At the risk of sounding modest, I doubt that there are many contemporary senior political leaders who have spoken out and done more to promote democratic governance in our country than me. : Guidelines To A

“In addition to public statements and presentations, I brought some actions to our courts which produced landmark judicial decisions intended to uphold democratic principles and practices.

“Some of that effort was thrust upon me by circumstances of political struggles. But much of my effort was because of two things: my participation among other leaders in the struggles to ease the military out of power; and my deep and enduring belief that democracy is the best route to development and unity for our diverse country and peoples.

“Democracy is characterised by, among other things, people’s freedom to choose their leaders; periodic elections, which partly ensure leaders’ commitment to the welfare of the governed, leaders’ acceptance of guardrails (without restraints leaders tend to accumulate and abuse power); consequences for non-compliance, including rejection at the polls.

‘An independent judiciary to adjudicate disputes, and in a presidential system, checks and balances among the three branches of government,” he said.

In his quest to return to power, having served the country as number two between 1999 and 2006 Abubakar has contested the Nigerian Presidency on a few occasions, the most recent was the 2023 Presidential election he lost to incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

2027: Count Me Out Of Coalition With PDP, Others- Obi

0
Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate has ruled out any plan to join other political parties in the country to take over power in the next election.

““I’m not interested in any coalition for purpose of taking power,” Obi declared on Monday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The former governor of Anambra state made the declaration in Abuja after attending a two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria.

The conference was attended by top opposition leaders in the country.

The conference also comes amidst reports that major opposition parties are planning to form a coalition to dislodged the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The magazine reports that a former governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El- Rufai on Monday, urged opposition parties in the country to come together to save the country’s democracy, saying the ruling party has failed the people.

According to Obi, what matters to him as a top opposition party is how to save the country, and not how to take over ‘power.’

He explained that the welfare of Nigerians is currently in uppermost to him, and not the desperation to ‘grab’ power, saying this is “the most important thing for now.”

He said, “I’m not interested in any coalition for purpose of taking power. It is about discussing Nigeria. “How do we care about securing the Nigerians?

“How do we care about the common person in Nigeria?

“How do we care about our children being in school? That is the most important thing for now.”

Not a few Nigerians insist that it will be very difficult for the ruling APC to be dislodge from power in 2027 except the opposition political parties form a united front.

I No Longer Believe In APC- El Rufai Declares

0
Nasir El-Rufai
Nasir El-Rufai

The immediate past governor of Kaduna state Nasir El Rufai says he has lost confidence in the capability of the ruling All Progressives Party, APC, to change the country.

The former Minister of the FCT said the party has abandoned all the principles of the founding fathers, which formed the bedrock of the party to take over the country few years ago.

El rufai is a member of the ruling APC though the former governor has been distancing himself from the activities of the party for sometimes, particularly after he was denied a ministerial position in the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall that he lost his nomination as a minister by President Tinubu after the Nigerian Senate failed to confirm him. Sources close to him insist that he’s very angry with the party and the president for failing to ensure that his nomination sailed through in the National Assembly.

Speaking during a conference in Abuja, the nation’s capital El Rufai said the ethos of democracy have been lost by the ruling party, urging the opposition in the country to unite to save the country.

He described APC as a party of ‘one man’ show,  lacking in internal democracy and active party structures, adding that the reason is because the ruling party is being managed by ‘illiterates’.

He lamented the deteriorating state of the nation’s democracy, saying the opposition that is supposed to save the situation is currently in disarray, and in a state of ‘emergency’ that needs rescue. .

He said he “no longer recognize the APC. No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show..

“You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. This is why we end up with the poor leadership we have today.

“The problems that led to the creation of the APC remain unresolved, but I no longer believe the APC is interested in addressing them. The distance between me and the party is widening,” he said.

The former governor, according to the rumour mills, is perfecting his plans to leave the APC.

Guardian Publisher, Maiden Ibru, Rates  Thisday Better Than Her Newspaper

Lady Maiden Iibru

By Adesina Soyooye

It was, at once, one of the highlights and surprises of the night. The occasion was the high profile ThisDay/Arise Television award ceremony to mark the 30th and 12th year anniversary of the Media Houses. Venue was the Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

To mark the anniversary celebrations, quite a number of people, carefully chosen by Thisday/Arise Board of Editors, were honoured on Monday, January 27, 2025.

One of them was the beautiful Lady Maiden Ibru, the Publisher/Chief Executive Officer of the Guardian Newspaper. She took over the running of the Newspaper after the passing of her husband, Dr. Alex Ibru.

The Guardian, well-respected, credible,

prides itself as the Flagship of the Nigerian Media.

But on this Monday night, its Publisher ceded that to Thisday. While accepting the award in the category of Lifetime Achievers, she said she was shocked she was chosen. She then expressed  appreciation for the honour done her. Then, she went on  to rate ThisDay above her Newspaper, The Guardian, and every other Newspaper in Nigeria.

She said: “ThisDay is the number one in Nigeria. It is number one. I know I am a Publisher, but ThisDay is number one.”

While many people applauded her for the courage in publicly rating another publication better than her’s, others said what she did amounted to “de-marketing” her publication, almost. Said one Editor who pleaded anonymity, “This is likely to demoralise her Editors.”

Lady Ibru is noted for her free spirit, honesty, straightforward attitude and bluntness when she speaks.
