No Restriction Of Movement During Environmental Sanitation In Edo – Court Rules

An Edo State High Court has restrained the Edo State Government, its agents, officers and privies from restricting or interfering with the movement of persons or vehicles within the state on account of any environmental sanitation exercise or related regulation.

The court declared as unlawful the restriction of human and vehicular movement during the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

In a judgment delivered on Thursday,

Justice Isoken Urhomwen Erameh ruled that the enforcement of a stay-at-home order between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on sanitation days violates citizens’ constitutional rights.

The case was instituted by Curtis Ogbebor, Executive Director of the Incorporated Trustees of Freedom Ambassadors Organization, supported by Rural Development, Information and Legal Advocacy Centre/FOI Counsel.

In its decision, the court held that such restrictions are inconsistent with Section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which guarantees freedom of movement.

It further found the measures to be in breach of Articles 12 and 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Justice Erameh consequently issued a declaration that the prohibition of movement during the sanitation period is unlawful and unconstitutional.

In addition, the court awarded ₦200,000 to the applicants as costs for instituting and prosecuting the action.

The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications for environmental sanitation enforcement in Edo State, particularly in how authorities balance public health initiatives with constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.

Reacting to the judgment, Counsel to the applicants, President Aigbokhan, also praised the court, emphasizing that while public health remains a legitimate government concern, it must be pursued within the bounds of the law and supported by clear statutory authority and proportionate safeguards.

He criticized the state government for failing to provide basic logistics, such as waste collection trucks and supervisory personnel, for the monthly sanitation exercise.

According to him, enforcement has been reduced largely to movement restrictions carried out by law enforcement agencies relying on broad directives that undermine constitutional guarantees.

On his part, Robinson Ayodele Otuakhena Esq, Senior Legal Officer of Rural Development, Information and Legal Advocacy Centre/FOI Counsel, clarified that the judgment does not abolish sanitation exercises, but rather invalidates the restriction of movement.

“The court’s decision reorientate the state government to its primary responsibility of supporting and supervising sanitation activities, instead of pursuing and arresting citizens for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of movement.”

Apprehension and anxiety are the order of the day among the people of Ikole in Ekiti state following the absence of the community’s Monarch, Oba Adewunmi Fasiku, for the past four years.

Various stakeholders, especially youth groups, have through written petitions and protests demanded for the whereabouts of Oba Fasiku without answer.

The Elekole-in-Council has insisted that the Traditional Ruler, sought and obtained necessary permission before traveling on a medical vacation abroad.

The Council spoke in reaction to reports that the Royal Father’s whereabouts were unknown and that he was incommunicado.

The Elekole-in-Council, in a statement signed by the Second-in-Command to the Elekole and Olotin of Ikole-Ekiti, Chief Oluwasayo Okunola, made available to Journalists in Ado Ekiti stated that “The people in Ikole Ekiti are aware of the king’s whereabouts. He is indisposed like any other human being can be, and he is receiving treatment abroad.”

The Save Ikole Group, one of the associations had, in the report, claimed  that it has prevailed on its members, who are mainly youths in the town from attacking Chiefs of the community over the Royal Fathers’ State of health and whereabouts.

But the council stated, “The good thing is that he (the Elekole) is recuperating, and that was apparent when he addressed the chiefs and a large number of the town people via virtual means. Where the group got it from that the King is incommunicado is what we do not know.

“When the king was travelling, he took all necessary steps and procedures by seeking approval from the state government, which is the constitutional requirement, and he duly informed members of Elekole-in-Council and other Chiefs.

“It is laughable how the Save Ikole Group claimed they prevented the youths from protesting and beating up the chiefs; how on earth would Ikole youths resort to these unknown persons for advice?

“We have challenged them, and we are doing so for the umpteenth time to mention the names of the youths they met with, but they have been unable.

“The only youth body in Ikole-Ekiti, the Ikole Youth Forum, has denied ever planning a protest, let alone meeting them.

“For us, the good sons and daughters of Ikole are still full of joy over the State Specialist Hospital in the town that has just been upgraded to a Federal Medical Centre and other developments happening in the town in spite the absence of the king.”

All Progressive Congress, APC Governorship aspirant in Ogun state, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has pulled her weight behind the ruling party’s decision to chose its candidates for next year’s election through consensus arrangement.

Senator Obasanjo, a governorship aspirant in the state spoke on Thursday, on Channels Television, saying it’s the best way for the party to chose popular candidates who will represent it during next year’s election.

The former Commissioner of Health in the state spoke amid ongoing APC Congresses across the country, which has been mostly controversial because some aspirants have kicked against the arrangement, saying many aspirants will be blocked from testing their popularity .

APC spokesman, Feli Morka, while reacting to the furore generated over the consensus arrangement said, on Thursday that angry aspirants should seek internal resolution to the issue, adding that the party is prepared to listen to the complain by some aspirants that they have been shut out from contesting.

Reacting, Senator Obasanjo said the party made a wise decision to have agreed on consensus arrangement to pick its candidates fro next year’s election, noting that it enabled the party to chose the most popular candidates who can deliver victory for the party during election.

She said: “I do believe that consensus can bring the right candidates because consensus does not mean that leadership ignores the will of the people; consensus means that they look at what the people are saying. No party wants to lose, so the party will not choose people who open them for a loss; does that make sense?

“So, the consensus is going to come towards people that can actually win on the ground, if that makes sense, because at the end of the day, the party wants to win. So, they do not want to put the least popular person as the consensus candidate in a way that is going to aggravate the other participants and in a way that is going to discourage people that are popular from participating. So, I have full belief that consensus is the way to go.”

In Ogun state where Senator Obasanjo is one of the aspirants seeking the APC governorship ticket to contest the 2027 election, the leadership of the party is reported to  have agreed on Senator Solomon Olamilekan aka Yayi, represnting Ogun West in the Nigerian Senate as its consensus candidate.

APC leaders in the south west were said to have chosen Senator Olamilekan, the current Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier in the week, in his Ikoyi, Lagos residence.

The incumbent, Governor Dapo Abiodun is also believed to be supporting Yayi to succeed him.

Electricity Blackout: It’s Not Adelabu’s Fault

0

Barey 24 hours after the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu apolosgised to Nigerians over persistent power outage in the country, his aide, Adebayo Olowoniyi has claimed that the minister cannot be blamed for the problem, saying the electricity blackout in the country is more of a systemic rather than a personal failure of the minister.

Adelabu had apologised to Nigerians earlier in the week, saying the government is trying to resolve the epileptic power supply which has crippled businesses and living conditions of not a few Nigerians. The minister later said the problem will be tackled within two weeks, pleading to Nigerians to bear with the administration.

Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday, the Olowoniyi who’s the Chief Technical Adviser to the minister defended him saying his principal cannot be totally blamed for the problem, adding that Adelabu only took responsibility because he’s the minister.

“Not necessarily directly his fault for the challenges that we have, but as the Minister of Power, he just took it was the right leadership step to say, okay, I take ownership of this issue, and I’m going to proffer a solution that would ensure power supply comes back in the shortest available time,” the minister’s aide said.

According to him, the epileptic power supply in the country was largely because of ongoing maintenance work of power and gas infrastructure across the country, which has led to shortage of gas supply to power plants. Once the repair works are concluded, he said, the situation will return to normal.

Olowoniyi: “We’re sure that within the next two weeks, full gas pressure will be back on the gas pipelines, and the power plants will be able to get enough gas at least to go back to their level of generation that they had in the last two to three months.

“I would already say that from yesterday, we would have gradually started to see some improvement as the pressure on the pipeline gradually starts to build up, and we will see continuous improvement over the next couple of weeks.”

Adelabu, the magazine recalls, recently drew the anger of not a few Nigerians after he said electricity consumers in the country leave their air conditions on  when they are not at home, saying electricity supply has been largely misused.

2027: Umahi-Linked Igbo Group Promises Tinubu 13m Votes From South East

Kwankwaso and Obi

A group Ndigbo For Tinubu 2027, NDI-ABAT, has declared that the any joint presidential ticket between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwakwanso poses no threat to the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

The group said on Tuesday, in a statement that Obi/ Kwankwaso ticket, which is being considered by some opposition political leaders in the country will not be able to stop President Tinubu from returning to office.

According to the statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator and Secretary-General , Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Dr Ugwuoke Ugwuoke respectively, there are indications that the two opposition leaders in the country may have decieded to run on a joint ticket in one of the nation’s political parties.

The magazine reporst that Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP has recenlty joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and is one of the top aspirants guning for the party’s ticket.

Also, Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the NNPP is eyeing the presidency in 2027, and may actually be targeting the position of a running mate to Obi considering the contention by some Nigerians, to the effect that the Presidency should remain in the South for now.

An indication that the two politicians are planing something, came on Monday when Obi participated in the yearly celebration of the Kwankwansiyya Movement in Kano. The Movement is the brain child of Kwankwaso, a former governor of the state, and former Minister of Defence under the Obasanjo’s administration.

But reacting to the possibility of Obi/ Kwankwaso ticket in the next year’s presidential election, NDI-ABAT said this will not pose a threat to the return of President Tinubu to office, for the second time in 2027.

The group said it will join other Nigerians to mobilise massive votes to ensure that the second term ambition of Tinubu is not truncated, saying 13 million votes will come from the south east alone for the president.

“We are targeting 13 million Igbo votes for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

“We are confident that Tinubu will defeat both the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket and a possible Atiku/Amaechi ticket in the 2027 presidential election,” the group said.

NDI-ABAT is believed to be working for the Minister of Work, Dave Umahi, a staunch ally of the president, and immediate past governor of Ebonyi state..

“Where Was NBA When I Was Abducted Inside A Court Room?” -Sowore Asks, Denies Press Conference In Court

By Adesina Soyooye

African Action Congress Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, Omoyele Sowore, has denied that he held a press conference inside the Chambers of a Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

He denied this in response to the Nigerian Bar Association following NBA’s criticism of his conduct at the Federal High Court.

In denying the allegation, Sowore accused the NBA of what he called “selective outrage, falsehood, and shielding powerful actors while targeting victims of state abuse.”

In a statement he issued on Wednesday, Sowore lamented against the NBA’s characterisation of his actions as a breach of courtroom etiquette, and described its statement as an assault on truth.

He wrote, in part: “I have read the statement issued by the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, and I must say this is yet another sad day for democracy in Nigeria.

“While I understand that the NBA may feel compelled to defend one of its own, such defence must not be built on falsehoods.”

The incident to which the NBA reacted happened on Tuesday, March 24, when Sowore  had a verbal clash with Musibau Adetunbi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,  after he attempted to speak with journalists inside the courtroom.

The Senior Lawyer objected to Sowore’s alleged move, and  insisted that the court was not an appropriate place for a media briefing.

However, Sowore said the NBA’s account of events is a lie and denied he  organised a press conference inside the court.

According to him, he had visited the Federal High Court to obtain a Certified True Copy of a ruling striking out a cybercrime charge filed against him in January 2025. On arrival, he said he was told that the presiding judge, Justice M.S. Liman, had refused to sign the order citing a secret ex parte motion filed by the Nigeria Police Force.

He said: “We protested this irregularity and were asked to wait for the Judge to resume sitting. While waiting, media personnel attached to the Federal High Court approached me as they routinely do and requested comments. I obliged. This is standard practice.”

He clarified that the journalists were a regular part of the court environment who usually interacted freely with lawyers, litigants, and observers.

He gave the NBA a low mark, for according to him, the association’s “troubling pattern of selective engagement, questioning why the association had remained silent on far graver violations of courtroom sanctity involving state actors.

“The NBA’s selective outrage is troubling. Where was this energy when DSS operatives invaded a courtroom to abduct me before a sitting judge? Where was the defence of the sanctity of the court when state actors repeatedly violated court orders and trampled on the rights of citizens?”

Sowore, also, alleged that  Adetunbi acted with impunity during the confrontation, issued threats, attempted  to destroy equipment, and summoned the police, a  conduct, he pointed out,  the NBA shockingly failed to address.

He said: “The attempt by some lawyers, including Senior Advocate Musbau, to intimidate and harass us in court, issuing threats, attempting to destroy equipment, and even calling the police, only underscores the growing culture of impunity.”

The Judge, he said, finally, reaffirmed his decision and struck out the case and ordered the release of his international passport, which he said had been “unjustly seized.”

Sowore challenged the NBA to live up to its stated values by applying the same standard of scrutiny to powerful state actors as it did to their victims.

Sowore: “The NBA cannot claim to defend the rule of law while ignoring abuses by powerful state actors and amplifying misleading narratives against victims of those abuses.

“This is not just disappointing, it is dangerous. If the NBA truly seeks to protect the integrity of the legal profession and the courts, it must begin with honesty, consistency, and courage — not selective outrage. Indeed, this is another sad day for democracy in Nigeria.”
