Shehu Sani, Yero, former PDP Gov. Of Kaduna State,  Others Defect To APC In Kaduna

“You Are Only Driven By Your Selfish Interests”  Tambuwal Knocks Them

Immediate past  Governor of Sokoto Senator Aminu Tambuwal, has dismissed the gale of high profile defections to the ruling All Progressive Congress APC ,in the North West region as inconsequential.

Tambuwal described the defectors as those who are out of touch with the reality of the suffering of the people, and are only being goaded by selfish interests.

Tambuwal’s comment comes on the heels of the defections of former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Ramalan Yaro, former Senator Shehu Sani, and about 39 other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Labour Party LP ,and other parties to the APC ,on Saturday ,15,2025 in Kaduna.

At a ceremony to receive the defectors, Governor Uba Sani, assured the new APC members ,of equal treatments with others ,who have been with the party since formation

Speaking at the ceremony which took place at the Murtala Square in Kaduna ,the State Capital, the Governor also told the defectors to assure their supporters of the readiness and commitment of the party to fully integrate them into its fold .

Aminu Tambuwal

“Someone who joins APC today and the one who has been a founding member ten years ago, are of the same status.

“They  will enjoy the same fights and privileges. In  2027, due to its  popularity and acceptability of its leadership,at both the states and Federal levels ,the electorate will vote for APC ,in all the elections from top to bottom.

“At the top, our leader President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be re-elected . At the state level, the party will be voted for in the gubernatorial, National and State Assembly elections” he stated .

Also among the defectors were former Senators Shehu, Sani, Suleiman Hunkuyi, Sani Shaaban ,and Abubakar Mustapha, a former National Organizing Secretary of the PDP.

But in an interactive session with the media in Kaduna on Saturday, shortly after the PDP Zonal meeting, Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, insisted that political actors that pitch tent with the APC, going by the abysmal performance of President Tinubu, are simply being insensitive and conscienceless.

Referring specifically to the Kaduna defectors and others in the region of recent, the former Sokoto  State Governor, noted that majority of them are  driven by a desperate search for  rehabilitation, rather  than the interests of the people they are claiming to represent .

According to him, no politicians ,in tune with the ongoing excruciating experience being passed through by the people, will attempt to join the APC, not to talk about celebrating same as being done by some in the North West.

“If you are a politician, with a conscience, you wouldn’t join the APC, given the current economic hardship and the poor performance of the Tinubu’s administration.

“There is nothing appealing in the APC beyond personal benefits. Those of us who believe in this country and in service to the people must come together to ensure that by 2027, we remove this administration that has failed Nigerians”, Senator  Tambuwal stated.

For the records, Tambuwal, who now is criticising defectors, was one of those responsible for the downfall  of PDP in 2015. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, he, Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, and others, inexplicably, dumped PDP for APC. Some of them, including Tambuwal, came back to PDP after APC literally showed them the bitter side of politics.

Former First Lady, Betty Akeredolu-Anyanwu applauds

Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of the late former Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has hailed the return of Mrs Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, wife of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu, described the return of the Ondo State First Lady as a welcome development for the women folk in the state.

She lamented the sidelining of women in governance, noting that the return of Mrs Aiyedatiwa would revive the Office of the First Lady which would refocus attention on women issues.

“Good news! Good for the women of Ondo State. Women of Ondo State had been sidelined in the scheme of things. Nobody was doing the pillow talk for them.

“The Office of the First Lady will come alive again. Happy for them!” Anyanwu-Akeredolu said.

Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, the wife of Ondo state Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa  made a surprise return to the Government House on Saturday, marking a pivotal moment after months of speculation about her absence.

Her reappearance at the government house coincided with a wedding ceremony at the chapel within the government house premises, leaving attendees in shock and excitement.

Efforts by religious leaders and concerned stakeholders across the state seem to have paid off, as sources close to the family confirmed that both Aiyedatiwa and his wife had been making serious moves to reconcile ahead of his February 24 inauguration.

Their prayers were seemingly answered when the First Lady walked into the wedding ceremony of the governor’s niece, drawing applause from the congregation.

The moment she stepped into the hall, excitement filled the air, with many guests celebrating her return.

The governor, who was attending a separate function within the premises, was reportedly taken by surprise upon learning of her presence.

It is believed that her return may have been influenced by increasing public demand for her involvement in state affairs.

Many had voiced concerns that her absence created a vacuum in governance, making her reappearance highly symbolic.

The significance of the moment was further amplified when the officiating priest at the chapel publicly acknowledged her as “Her Excellency,” an address that drew another round of applause from the attendees.

Mrs Aiyedatiwa had traveled abroad about three years ago when the husband was still serving as deputy governor following alleged incesant beating by the husband, an allegation which was denied.

She has not shown up since Aiyedatiwa was sworn in in December, 2023 following the death of former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The Abia State Government and the Leadership of organized Labour have announced the resolution of all grey areas in the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage.

The Source reports that the  commencement of the implementation of the  minimum wage in October 2024 was marked by strong disagreement arising from the computation of the consequential components of the wage  policy.

The leadership of organized Labour had rejected the computation, which it insisted was heavily  characterized by serious discrepancies.

For one, the implementation module applied by the Government had led to a situation whereby workers between grade levels one and seven were earning more than level 10 civil servants.

The resultant loud outcry and even outright threat to down tool by Labour forced the Abia State Government to constitute a joint committee to reconcile the observed areas of disagreements.

At the official signing of the agreement on Friday, February 14, 2025, Dr Caleb Ajagba, the Chief of Staff to the Abia State Governor, appreciated the Labour Leadership in the State for its commitment towards resolving the situation.

Particularly, he acknowledged the seriousness attached to the process by the Labour Leaders, noting that it signposts a high level of patriotism and dedication on their part towards repositioning Abia State.

“I want to thank you for showing commitment to the new Abia. From the beginning to today’s signing ceremony, we have remained focused on our vision and mission for a better Abia state.

We believe that every Abia worker will now see that to whom much is given, much is also expected”, the Chief of staff noted.

The Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, while describing the agreement as the final and acceptable step towards enthroning a regime of fairness in the new minimum wage implementation, also expressed gratitude to the state Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for keeping to his promise of correcting all perceived anomalies.

He specifically lauded the State Government’s sincerity of purpose throughout the period of discussions.

“Since December 6, 2024, when the Governor met with over 115 Labour Leaders in the State, he has demonstrated enough commitment towards ensuring that Abia workers are well placed ,as it concerns the N70,000 new minimum wage.

“Today, I am happy to announce that the needed corrections have been effected, and the new salary structure agreement signed by all parties .

“The Head of Service will now issue a circular directing that all workers from levels 1 to 17 receive commensurate wages.

“The salary structure implemented in October 2024, benefited only workers between levels one and seven”, the NLC chairman stated.

INEC Urges NASS For Laws To Stop Politicians From Carrying Money To Polling Units

Prof Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has urged the National Assembly to enact a stricter law prohibiting politicians from possessing large sums of money within polling areas in order to curb vote-buying and other electoral malpractices during elections.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, INEC, represented by INEC’s Director of Litigation and Prosecution, Tanimu Muhammed SAN, made this call to the National Assembly during a consultative meeting with security operatives and the technical committee on electoral law amendments in Abuja, where it highlighted the growing concern over vote-buying, which has become a major threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.

The meeting, organized by the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, PLAC, and supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, FCDO, provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss electoral security and legal reforms.

The INEC representative noted that politicians often justify carrying large amounts of cash on election day by citing party agent payments and logistics expenses. However, he warned that unrestricted cash circulation at polling units has fueled vote-buying and compromised the integrity of elections.

To address this challenge, Muhammed suggested that individuals should not be allowed to carry more than ?50,000 within polling areas.

“Vote-buying remains one of the biggest threats to credible elections in Nigeria. We need legislation that not only criminalizes this practice but also puts preventive measures in place,” Muhammed stated.

Beyond vote-buying, INEC officials reiterated their long-standing demand for the establishment of an Electoral Offenses Commission, arguing that the electoral body lacks the capacity to effectively prosecute offenders.

According to Muhammed, “INEC is doing its best to handle prosecutions, but we need a dedicated institution with the legal authority and resources to investigate and prosecute electoral crimes comprehensively. The creation of an Electoral Offenses Commission would ensure that vote-buying, ballot snatching, and other crimes are met with swift legal action”.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of election planning and evaluation, Abayomi Shogunle, who represented the Inspector General of Police, pointed out that inadequate resources often hamper law enforcement efforts during elections. “We face major logistical challenges, from deploying officers to remote areas to ensuring real-time communication during elections. These are issues that need to be addressed if we are to effectively enforce electoral laws,” Shogunle said.

Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon. Adebayo Balogun announced plans for a 2025 Electoral Act to replace the current 2022 version, which he said had exposed gaps during the 2023 elections.

Addressing the issues raised, Balogun, assured that all issues discussed would be addressed in future electoral reforms.

“The 2022 Electoral Act was a significant step forward, but its implementation in the last general elections showed areas that need improvement. We are committed to strengthening our electoral laws to reflect the realities of our democracy,” Balogun said.

He emphasized that, apart from legislative reforms, there was a need for increased awareness among political parties, INEC officials, and civil society organizations on the dangers of vote-buying and other electoral malpractices.

LASG Increases BRT Fares By 18 Percent, Commuters Lament

Lagos BRT Bus

By Akinwale Kasali

Lagosians are lamenting the hike in fares on the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, under its Bus Reform Initiative, BRI.

LAMATA announced an 18 percent increase in fares citing rising operational costs.

The new fare structure is set to take effect from February 17, 2025.

In a statement released on its X handle (formerly Twitter), LAMATA explained that the adjustment was necessary to ensure the continued availability of bus services for commuters in Lagos.

“The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos,” the statement read.

“The new fare will take effect from Monday, 17th February, 2025. We seek your understanding and cooperation.”

With the latest fare hike, Lagos commuters will need to brace for higher transportation costs, even as efforts are made to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the city’s public transport system.

It would be recalled that this is not the first time LAMATA has adjusted its transport fares.

On June 30, 2022, the agency announced a N100 increase on all routes within the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, attributing the decision to the high cost of diesel and the growing number of buses that were out of operation due to a lack of spare parts.

The firm had withdrawn its services over losses occasioned by COVID-19 new transport guidelines that mandated it to commute only 20 passengers per trip instead of 70.

Again, in 2022, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved a flat rate increase by N100 in bus fares for all Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, and standard routes as part of measures to sustain operations.

The increase, which commenced on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, was aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the BRT and standard route schemes.

Further reviews of BRT fares occurred during the Naira redesign crisis, and when the removal of subsidy caused inflation.

Following this increment, a commuter said that this will further had more burden to Lagosians who sees the BRT as a succour as against Commercial Buses.

Mudashiru Obasa and Mojisola Meranda

By Akinwale Kasali

Mudashiru Obasa, embattled and impeached former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has filed a Lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court against Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda and other members of the Assembly, demanding for his immediate reinstatement as the Speaker of LAHA.

Obasa prayed that the Court should order the removal of the current Speaker and restore him as Speaker.

In the suit filed by Obasa, he argued that the January 13 plenary session where he was impeached was not properly convened, making the proceedings unconstitutional.

The court filing cites constitutional provisions and Assembly standing orders to argue that the impeachment was conducted outside legal procedures.

Obasa contends that lawmakers met during a recess without formally reconvening, rendering the decision invalid.

It would be recalled that Obasa was unceremoniously impeached by the Lawmakers on January 13th, 2025, for gross misconduct and abuse of office.

He was out of the country when he was impeached. But on returning from United States of America, he queried his Impeachment, vowing to seek justice and reinstated.

The suit is yet to be assigned to a judge and no date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
