Professor Humphrey Nwosu, will, finally, go back to mother-earth on Friday, March 28, 2025. On that day, he will finally find peace and satisfaction which his country, Nigeria, denied him while alive. And that,  inspite of his selfless sacrifices for it.

On that day, Nwosu will, finally, find that peace, denied him by his country when his body embraces the bosom of his beloved Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area Anambra State, to  meet his Ancestors who must be proud of his sojourn on Earth. They will tell him: “Great son of ours, you have done well. You did well for your country. And we are proud of you”.

It was the erudite and urbane and calm and unassuming Nwosu, a Professor of Political Science who oversaw the June 12, 1993, Presidential Election adjudged by Nigerians and the International Community as the freest and fairest election ever conducted in Nigeria, a Country which every of its election is covered by corruption as water covers the sea. Nwosu was the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission  1989 – 1993 when he was unceremoniously kicked out for conducting a free Presidential Election.

That election, held after years of  Military Rule was meant to usher Nigeria into the circle of decent Nations, governed by civilians, law and order. It was between Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention, NRC. The two political parties were created by the Military Regime of President Ibrahim Babangida. He had dubbed one a little to the right, and the other, a little to the left.

When Nwosu was appointed the Chairman of the Electoral Body to birth Nigeria into the world of democracy by Babangida, it was a job he took seriously. It was a job he gave his all, and inspite of all the dribbles and obstacles, did a good job.

The SDP Candidate, Chief Abiola, was clearly, undisputably, in the lead. There was nothing to stop his victory lap, and that of Professor Nwosu – Abiola’s for his overwhelming victory, and Nwosu’s for delivering a perfect baby.

But just when Nwosu, all smiles, was ready to name the baby he had just delivered, the smile was brutally wiped off his face. The baby was snatched from him and killed. It was camouflaged like a still birth. But no. The baby had already been seen alive by most Nigerians. They were celebrating, already, a new dawn. But, the Military Regime, led by Babangida, inexplicably, annulled the election. Nwosu was left empty and broken.

It is not known whether Professor Nwosu ever recovered from that brutal smack on his face and reputation. An undeserved question mark had been put on his credibility. And capacity. He withdrew into his shell. He never granted any major interview to discuss June 12; the pressure he underwent; the trauma he went through; the threats he endured. He never let on.

In those very fluid days, between June 12 and the day the Election was, finally, annulled, he never discussed where he was. Was he under house arrest? Was he surrounded by trigger-happy soldiers? Was a gun, or guns, pointed at him with a threat not to make “pim” or …? Anything could have happened. What was going on inside his head? Was he afraid? Did he fear for his life, that perhaps, he could be wasted just like that by an unappreciative Country and people? What were his regrets? Did he feel betrayed by Babangida, the man who appointed him? Did he feel abandoned? Did Babangida call him to apologize or explain what happened? Was he thinking of his time, years, now wasted, and the trillions of Naira gone down the drain.?

Professor Humphrey Nwosu
Professor Humphrey Nwosu

With Professor Nwosu’s passing on 24th October, 2024,  in the United States of America, a good chunk, indeed, what could have been the most authentic June 12 story is gone. For, the Professor never wrote a book to tell his story. Nigerians have been denied of all that by his passing. Now, who will tell his story?

The only time Nwosu told his story, briefly was in an interview he granted in the US. He revealed how he was summoned by the National Security and Defence Council to talk about June 12. Those present –  Sani Abacha, David Mark, Aliyu Gusau, Clement Akpamgbo and more. He told there was nothing much they could as all the results had been collated except that of Taraba State which just arrived; how he told them to allow him announce the Winner, Abiola; how he asked them to call Abiola and Tofa together and discuss with them; and how Abacha shut him up and asked him:  “Who are you to tell us what to do?”

Not much. He didn’t tell the story of his trauma, his humiliation.

The question one has been asking since February 20 when Babangida presented his own side of June 12 story in his autobiography – A Journey In Service – is: What could have been Nwosu’s response to Babangida’s tale?  Babangida’s book was sadly presented behind Nwosu, as it was behind a whole number of those who played prominent roles in that very dark phase of Nigeria’s history. Most of them are gone. They left the world  in silence as if their mouths were celotaped. The only real main character remaining is Babangida. That irks.

But perhaps, what irks most is that  Professor Nwosu was not alive to hear Babangida validate the June 12 Election. He was not alive to hear Babangida say “Yes, Professor Nwosu was right, I was wrong; that the election was clean; that Nwosu did a good job, and I was the one, along with my colleagues, especially, the goggled one, who rubbished it, and took Nigerians on an endless journey. Sad.

Yet, the worst is that Professor Nwosu is going home unsung, unappreciated, uncelebrated by a Country he gave his all. Nobody has recognized him. Nobody is even remembering him. No National Honour has been bestowed on him. No National monument has been named after him. None. Why?

On the day Babangida presented his book, I never heard any speaker pay glowing tributes to Professor Nwosu. I never heard any talk about Nwosu’s pains and sacrifices. And resilience. Just as I never heard any of them pay tributes to the hundreds of Nigerians who lost their lives over that scandalous incident.

And, unless I missed it, when he died, I never read any letter of condolence to his family from the Federal Government. In the preparation for his final send- off from mother-earth, I have not heard of any contributions made by the Federal Government of Nigeria. What role is the FG playing for a man who offered us the democracy we are enjoying today? Is he being given a state burial? Will the Nigerian flag adorn his casket?

From the programme of events released by the Family, not by the Federal Government, or in conjunction with the Federal Government, the closest I saw of Nigeria’s involvement is a Service of Songs for him which will be held at the Nigerian Embassy,  Washington on March 1. Will the Federal Government be represented? There is no Ambassador at the Nigerian Embassy yet. So, who? There will, also, be a Night of Tributes at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Abuja on March 28. Who is organizing that? The Federal Government or friends and family?

Yet, as the saying goes, it is better late than the late. Any time one wakes up, it is, also said,  is one’s morning. The Federal Government still has a chance to redeem itself. Nigeria still has a chance to celebrate its son who is the architect, the hero of the democracy we are enjoying today, no matter how weak, and disjointed and corrupted it is. It is still better than a Military Regime.

On  March 28, the day Professor Nwosu will be interred, the FG should honour him by naming a National Monument after him.

Professor Nwosu died at the age of 83 years.

May his great and patriotic soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

Unity Bank On ‘Steady Growth’ Across Nigeria- MD; Lender Posts N59.3b GE

0
Unity Bank

The Managing Director/ Chief Executive of Unity Bank Plc Oluwatomi Somefun has assured key stakeholders in the nation’s financial and business sectors that the commercial bank is in the right direction following strategic steps taken by her management.

The commercial bank’s chief executive made the remark after releasing the lender’s full year 2023 Financial statement, to the Nigerian Exchange Group, NGX,  which showed positive trajectory.

According to the bank, Gross earnings stood at N59.3 billion for the full year ended December 31, 2023, representing a growth of 3.84 percent year-on-year.

The audited financial report indicates improvements across key performance indicators, including a significant appreciation of customer deposits by 23 percent to N402.9 billion from N327.4 billion within the period under review – an indication of sustained retail growth and customer confidence.

Other key highlights of the full-year results include the total assets which stood at N472.5 billion; net fee and income commission, N5.2 billion and an increase in interest income by 9.6 percent to 53.7 billion from N48.8 billion within the period.

Commenting on the result, Somefun said the Bank had issued a profit alert to reflect revaluation loss arising from Naira devaluation which was due to acute shortage of Forex that created an inclement business environment and, on the aggregate, set in an economic headwind.

She noted, however, that in the full-year statement, this has bottomed out and the key performance indicators are rebounding from the low level of growth and negative trends that characterized the year.

Somefun: “As we begin to see the margins being closed, it is an indication that the measures being taken to revamp all aspects of the business is being well received by the market: be it workable recapitalization plan, aggressive drive for asset creation, product innovation, or digital banking.

“We will need to covet the improvements and further build upon it. As a corporate brand, we have a lot that is keeping us going: the positive sentiments and optimism, the growing franchise of the business and steady growth in different segments of the retail market across all the geo-political zones of Nigeria.”

She added, “We have the right indicators to reclaim lost grounds – innovating with the development and soon to be launched omnichannel digital app to improve reliability, customer experience, support diverse products functionality which will impact earnings, income and profitability.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has recently approved Unity Bank’s business combination with another innovative Bank in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the Bank’s growth strategy as it advances its recapitalization plans, according to key stakeholders in the sector familiar with mergers and acquisitions.

Tinubu To El Rufai On Ministerial Loss: Stop Behaving Like A Child, Move On With Your Life

Bola Tinubu and Nasir El Rufai

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no apology for the angry former Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El Rufai  over his failure to make it to his cabinet as a minister.

El Rufai may have been seriously hurt over his big loss to make the president’s ministerial list, but Tinubu has no apology for him: move on with your life and stop crying over ‘split milk’ the former governor has been told by the nation’s Commander-in-Chief.

Tinubu’s message to the former governor was delivered by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga while speaking on the Arise Television programme on Tuesday.

El Rufai, the magazine reports has left no one in doubt that he’s very angry with President Tinubu following his failure to scale the Senate Ministerial screening hurdle in 2023. the former governor blamed the president for his predicament, and recently said Tinubu changed his mind after he promised to make him the ‘Minister of Power’ so that he could help the country to fight the ‘mafia’ in that sector.

For the betrayal, El Rufai has been punching Tinubu, left right and centre, and in fact has been hobnobbing with the opposition in his quest to stop the president’s re-election in 2027.

During  his interview with Arise Television on Monday, El Rufai urged the southern part of Nigeria to vote out Tinubu to stop his humiliation in the next presidential election.

Tinubu however has one word for the former Kaduna helsman; he cannot bring down the ‘roof’ because he as was not made a minister.

According to the president “It’s natural’ for El Rufai “to feel hurt’ because he was not made a minisiter , the former governor should stop crying over split milk and move on with his life. cannot continue

Onanuga: “You cannot continue to behave like a child as if somebody stole your bread and things like that and then you’re crying over spilt milk?

He added, “It’s natural for him to feel hurt, excluded and I think that as the president acknowledged in a recent birthday tribute to him Nasiru actually helped a lot in installing President Tinubu and if he’s not there it doesn’t mean that he must bring down the roof.”

El Rufai was instrumental to the success of Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential election, but not long after the former political allies parted ways after the Senate refused to clear the former governor over security concerns.

I’m Too Busy To Fight El Rufai, He Should Leave Me Alone – Ribadu

Nasir El-Rufai and Nuhu Ribadu

By Nuhu Ribadu

My attention has been drawn to the interview granted by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State Monday evening,” the statement reads.

If my silence wouldn’t risk being construed as consent, I would have ignored him. I am too preoccupied with my current assignment to get into a media fight with Nasir El-Rufai or anyone else.

Despite the incessant baiting and attacks I have never spoken ill of Nasir on record anywhere. This is out of respect for our past association and our respective families. I will not start today.

I however urge the public to disregard El-rufai’s statements against me.

For the avoidance of doubt, I want to put it on record that I have never discussed running for president in 2031 with anybody. All my focus and energy are geared completely towards the advancement of Nigeria and the success of President Tinubu’s administration.

I therefore ask Nasir El-Rufai to allow me to face my onerous national assignment just as I do not bother myself with his own affairs.

“In 2027, the South  Has An Option: Vote Tinubu Out” –  El-Rufai

“Please don’t punish the Yoruba over Tinubu’s lopsided appointments” – El-Rufai

In continuation of  his new political views which have not only embarrassed his political party members, but also put them on edge, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir El-Rufai, has asked the Southern Zone of Nigeria to vote President Bola Tinubu out in 2027.

President Tinubu is a Southerner of Yoruba origin.

El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, and the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, has had an untidy relationship with his Party, and by extention, President Bola Tinubu, since the Senate rejected to clear him for a Ministerial appointment after he was nominated  by Tinubu.

But in an interview on Monday with Arise Television’s Charles Aniagolu, El-Rufai said he was not rejected by the Senate. He said what happened was that Tinubu, who, allegedly, publicly begged him to join his Government, and told him he (El-Rufai), would man the Ministry of Power, suddenly changed his mind and ordered the Senate not to clear him during screening.

In a view that is most likely to anger his Party El-Rufai chided the South for the choice it made  during the 2023 Presidential Election.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

In 2023 the South insisted that it was its turn to occupy the Presidential seat after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner.

El-Rufai was one of those who, in his Party’s choice of a Candidate, insisted on a Southern Candidate for what he called justice and equity.

According to El-Rufai, the Southerners were given an opportunity in 2023, but they chose Tinubu.

What to do in 2027: vote him out, El-Rufai advised if he has not done well for you and the country. He clearly  asked the South to deny President Tinubu a second term in office.

El-Rufai: “As a private citizen, I can afford to reckless and say:  you know what?  We gave the Southerners their chance. They gave us Tinubu. Has he done well? If he hasn’t done well, by 2027, let’s vote him out.”

El-Rufai, also, spoke on what many see as Tinubu’s lopsided appointments.

Said he: “President Tinubu is appointing his own boys, not because they’re Yoruba. Most of his appointments do not reasonably cover the  South-west. People should stop confusing the two. The appointments are not balanced. But it’s not a Yoruba thing. Please, don’t punish the Yoruba.”

For the records, El-Rufai was a former Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, under the President Olusegun Obasanjo PDP Government. He later, under tye President Goodluck Jonathan’s Government, defected to the APC which foundation member he is. But now, things seem to have fallen apart between him and the APC.

Why Sam Amadi Will Never Be Hope Uzodimma

0
Sam Amadi and Declan Emelumba

By Declan Emelumba

Dr Sam Amadi’s recent deprecatory tirade against Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State, was a new low for a man who had made two attempts at the governorship of Imo state in 2019 and 2023. For a man who has consistently dropped the name of Uzodimma to gain a mileage in his futile political ambition, this open attack dripping with venom of jealousy, desperation and frustration, might have been a last ditch attempt at attracting the attention of the governor for the sole purpose of making him the preferred successor in 2027. But his strategy totally backfired as he exposed himself as an empty vessel whose hubris prevents him from embracing the fundamental political principle of ‘stooping to conquer.’

Since February 20, 2025 when he published an article titled: ‘If I am Governor Hope Uzodimma’, I have waited to see if he would disown any part of his condescending treatise, in which he portrayed Uzodimma as lacking the ideas necessary to govern Imo State. Since none of such had happened, I take it that Sam Amadi is, as usual, unapologetic and not remorseful of his ill-advised and ill-motivated article aimed at not only diminishing the person and office of the Governor but the entire electorate who chose him as their leader first in 2019 and again in 2023.

The moment Sam Amadi made reference to the Supreme Court making Uzodimma governor, it became obvious where he was coming from and where he was headed. I expected him to further repudiate the overwhelming mandate of the November 11th, 2023 governorship election where Uzodimma won in every of the 27 local government areas of the state. Somehow,  he restrained himself. His sense of entitlement, his vacuous assertion that he possesses the magic wand to rewrite Uzodimma’s performance history and act as his redeemer, reek of a drunken sailor bent on spending his last coin at the shore, hoping in vain to sleep away his hallucinations and troubles once aboard ship. Unfortunately for him, this is real life, and Amadi needs to wake up to that reality.

Senator Hope Uzodimma
Governor Hope Uzodimma

This is the summary of Sam Amadi’s submission in his own words: ‘If I am in Governor Hope’s situation, I will do two things. First, I will focus on achieving one landmark development project that will really resound in the months and years to come. Second, I will work hard to give Imo  a transformative leader as a successor so I can claim credit for the future greatness that such a leader will bring to Imo.’ Again, he declared with magisterial finality, ‘I know his strengths and weaknesses. He is a very smart politician, but not that strong with development ideas’. And without leaving anything in doubt, he named himself that transformative leader thus: ‘So, Gov. Hope can become legendary, despite his not too good record if he works hard to have as a successor a transformative leader from Owerri Zone (preferably Ngor Okpala that has not produced a Governor, a Minister, or an Ambassador or a Senator).’

The loose interpretation of Sam Amadi’s submission is that Governor Hope Uzodimma has not achieved anything to warrant a legacy, which is the reason he wants him to achieve just one that he would be remembered for. The second is that he requires a successor under whose achievements he will hide under to claim credit. The third is that the governor is not deep in ideas and, therefore, would always be incapacitated by that disability. And finally, he MUST APPOINT A GOVERNOR FROM NGOR OKPALA.

Let us first of all examine what an idea is. The dictionary defines an idea as a thought, visualisation, or suggestion for a possible course of action. Amadi claims Uzodimma “lacks ideas,” yet this same Uzodimma successfully ran for Senate twice and won, representing Imo West Senatorial District. He also ran for governor twice and won, first in 2019 (even if the Supreme Court had to restore his stolen mandate) and again, overwhelmingly, in 2023. A fool could not have mustered the tenacity to fight his case up to the Supreme Court.

Conversely, the self-proclaimed ‘man of ideas,’ Sam Amadi, has failed in two gubernatorial attempts. As Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), his tenure was marred by ineptitude, corruption, and an inability to regulate anything effectively. Under his watch, despite existing regulations, there was a free-for-all importation of generators into the country. He lacked the initiative to enforce rules against the perpetrators. It is telling that NERC workers celebrated his exit from the Commission. Yet, this same man now wants to pontificate about ideas and governance.

Beyond Amadi’s laughable claims, his sweeping generalization that Uzodimma has achieved nothing is empirically false. As a native of Ngor Okpala, has he not seen the dual carriageway leading to Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport? Has he not witnessed the installation of night-landing facilities, the first in 30 years, at the airport, a project facilitated by Governor Uzodimma? He must have traveled through Orlu or Okigwe and seen the ultra-modern roads built under Uzodimma’s leadership. Ideas drove the formulation and execution of these projects; over 120 roads completed in just five years.

Currently, Uzodimma is spearheading one of the most ambitious economic projects since the creation of Imo: the dredging of Oguta Lake to the Atlantic Ocean. The Orashi Free Trade Zone is also in the works, promising immense economic benefits. When completed, this project will transform the economy of Imo State and the entire Southeast. Was this Amadi’s idea? In a few months, all the communities in Imo State will have uninterrupted power supply, courtesy of Uzodimma’s Light Up Imo Project geared towards the total industrialization of the state. Whose idea was that? Is this not a single transformative project, more than enough to define Uzodimma’s legacy?

It was Uzodimma who conceptualized and implemented the SkillUp Imo project, through which over 40,000 youths have been trained in digital skills, either establishing their own businesses or securing employment overseas. The revamping of health and education institutions in the state point to a deliberate effort by a man who is not just determined to make a difference in governance but has gone ahead to ensure that civil servants and pensioners receive their salaries and pensions in time. UZODIMMA actually prioritises the welfare of the people and the overall development of the state. That is his covenant with the people. That is the real essence of governance.

Beyond that, Gov. Hope Uzodimma, contrary to the insinuations by Amadi and his band of cynics, came prepared to be the governor of the state. He was the first and only aspirant to address stakeholders from different spheres in the state on his manifesto that is anchored on his shared prosperity agenda built on reconstruction, rehabilitation, and recovery. He itemised his developmental initiatives and the framework for their realisation. Ever since his election and reelection, Uzodimma has been faithful to those ideals. Sam Amadi is perhaps angry that his proposal for a policy forum to ‘guide’ the administration was not given due consideration by the governor. Since he could not be the consultant of the government and since, according to him, he had been humoured by Uzodimma as a governorship material, now is the ripe time for the realisation of that malaria-induced dream.

The only problem is that he missed the point that power is never given but taken.  I thank God that at least he credited Uzodimma with the brilliant idea of  implementation of the Imo Charter of Equity ahead of the 2027 general election. The illusion that power should be ceded to not only Owerri zone but Ngor Okpala in particular will soon burst in the faces of Sam Amadi and his co-travellers in this bizarre blackmail tactic they are employing. I am aware that a few serious persons from the Owerri zone are working zealously to sell their candidature to the people who will be involved both in the primaries and the main elections. They have since moved away from the dreaming stage of chasing power.

When Sam Amadi glibly wrote about a transformative leader that Imo needs, it appeared that he could not recognise such a leadership already before him in Imo State. The Igbo ask: how many lions must a man kill before he is called a Lion Killer? The future he talked about is already before him, but he is politically blind to acknowledge Senator Hope Uzodimma as that transformative leader.

In leadership studies, several established theories define effective leadership. Trait Theory (certain innate qualities make a leader), Behavioral Theory (leadership is shaped by environment), Transformational Leadership (leaders inspire followers to exceed expectations), Contingency Theory (leadership style depends on the situation), Great Man Theory (leaders are born, not made), Transactional Leadership (leaders motivate through rewards and structure), Servant Leadership (leaders prioritise others’ needs), and Authentic Leadership (leaders demonstrate genuineness, integrity, and self-awareness).

Uzodimma epitomizes authentic leadership, a leader whose transparency and vision have earned him the people’s trust.

Therefore, the resignations of a few inconsequential APC members do not make Uzodimma a ‘lame-duck’ governor. On the contrary, more prominent figures are defecting from other parties to join the APC due to Uzodimma’s charismatic leadership. As Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, his influence extends beyond Imo State and the Southeast; it is national. That influence is not about to vanish, despite Sam Amadi’s delusional thinking.

The truth is simple: Sam Amadi can never be Hope Uzodimma, because Uzodimma is not synonymous with failure.

Imo: Hon. Osuoha Brings Joy To Indigent Students

0
Hon Uzoma Francis Osuoha

Just as he had been doing long before he became a Member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Uzoma Francis Osuoha, has again brought joy to his Constituency.

The Honourable Member  who represents Ohaji/ Egbema State Constituency in the Imo House of Assembly has wiped the tears of 120 indigent Students in his Constituency by purchasing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Examination forms for them.

This means that none of them who really wants to further his/her education will use “I am poor, my parents are poor, I cannot afford the forms” as an excuse as Osuoha has made it easy for them. All they need to do now is to read and write the examination.

This heart-warming was disclosed by the Lawmaker during a Press Conference on Monday, 24th February in  his office at the Imo State House Of Assembly complex.

The gesture, which has been an annual event in the last seven years, under his EZE-BUGUMA FOUNDATION, is meant for students of his constituency who cannot afford the present high cost of JAMB forms, which most of them complained have gone beyond the reach of their families, considering the socioeconomic challenges in the country.

Hon Osuoha, who is also the House Committee Chairman On ISOPADEC, Oil And Gas, urged the beneficiaries to study well in order to come out in flying colours and secure higher University admission.

According to him, the beneficiaries were drawn from the 12 Wards in Ohaji/Egbema State Constituency, at 10 students per Ward.

The unassuming Lawmaker, known for his vast humanitarian empowerment activities, especially for  youths and widows, promised to keep intervening and providing various initiatives to support students and education in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, an initiative he started several years ago.

The 12 Wards in Ohaji/Egbema, said a release from his Media Office are as follows:

  • Egbema Ward A.
  • Egbema Ward B.
  • Egbema Ward C.
  • Egbema Ward D.
  • Egbema Ward E.
  • Ohuba Ward.
  • Ekwuato Ward.
  • Obitti/Mgbeisii Ward.
  • Assa/Obile Ward.
  • Awarra/Ikwerede Ward.
  • Umuagwo Ward.
  • Umuapu Ward.

Oyetola Seeks Maritime Collaboration With The Gambia, Assures Safety In Gulf Of Guinea

Gboyega Oyetola - NIMASA Piracy

Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has expressed Nigeria’s desire to strengthen maritime collaboration with The Gambia to enhance regional security and economic growth. The Minister made this declaration at the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul, The Gambia.

Delivering the Minister’s speech at the event, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to expanding its maritime security infrastructure beyond its territorial waters. He revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential extension of the Deep Blue Project’s operations to cover a wider area within the Gulf of Guinea.

“Nigeria remains committed to being a stabilizing force, fostering cooperation, and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy. We are dedicated to ensuring safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea region. Given the recent disruption in global trade caused by the crisis in the Suez Canal, there has been a surge in shipping traffic around Africa. To address this, Nigeria is working towards extending the operational coverage of its Deep Blue assets to further enhance maritime security,” Dr. Mobereola stated.

In addition to advancing regional cooperation, Dr. Mobereola called on delegates at the conference to support Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council (Category ‘C’) for the 2026-2027 biennium.

“Let me take this opportunity to inform this esteemed gathering that Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for the IMO Council election under Category ‘C’ for the 2026-2027 term. We seek the kind support and vote of member states of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) in the forthcoming election at the 34th IMO Assembly Session. Nigeria’s representation in the IMO Council will strengthen Africa’s voice in global maritime decision-making, particularly in areas related to the blue economy, maritime safety and security, and environmental sustainability, given the volume of trade conducted in our region,” he said.

Dr. Mobereola also highlighted that Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security have received global recognition. Both the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the IMO have commended the country for its effective deployment of the Deep Blue Project, which has sustained zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters for the past three years.

Nigeria remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships, strengthening maritime security, and advancing the shared economic interests of West and Central African nations through sustainable blue economy initiatives.

Buhari Punished Niger State, Still Angry With IBB For Planning A Coup Against Him

0
Muhammadu Buhari and Ibrahim Babangida

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has not forgiven General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) for throwing him out of office in August 1985, it will take a divine intervention for the feud between the duo to be settled, according to Jonathan Vatsa, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Vatsa made the revelation following the absence of Buhari during the launch of Gen Babangida book  ‘A Journey in Service’ last week in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Buhari’s conspicuous absence at the elaborate ceremony attended by Nigeria’s former leaders including Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, and incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has kept many tongues wagging on why Buhari shunned the event.

According to Vatsa, Buhari is still very angry that Babangida ousted him from power 40 years ago, in a bloodless coup that saw Babangida swept to power, while Buhari and his then Deputy, Tunde Idiagbon were immediately retired from the Armed Forces.

Recall that Babangida claimed in his book that Buhari military regime was ousted from power because it had become unpopular within the military hierarchy and Nigerians at large.

Babandida also claimed that his position as the Chief of Army Staff under the Buhari regime was  threatened after he disagreed with many unfriendly policies of the regime, including some obnoxious decrees passed by it.

It was based on these and others problems associated with the regime that some top military generals decided that time was up for Buhari , these officers planned the coup and installed Babangida as military head of state.

Vatsa said Buhari is still nursing that grudge that he was pushed out of power, and has decided not to have anything to do with his former Chief of Army Staff.

He added that Niger state, where Babangida hails from also suffered from the confidence crisis between the two former leaders, citing Buhari’s decision not to execute major development projects in the state while he was civilian president between 2015 and 2023.

Vatsa: “The whole world knows that Niger State was made a scapegoat by former President Buhari because of IBB. For eight years, he did not pay any serious official visit to the state, and no single federal project was executed there.

“The Baro Port project, which recently generated political heat in the state, was abandoned by Buhari, along with several federal road projects.”

From Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister for Education, comes a warning to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. “Next time Mr Akpabio harasses any woman, well-elected, unlike him, and representing  her constituency, @ the National Assembly or any woman at all anywhere in this country, he must get ready. Enough is enough”.

Ezekwesili’s anger stems from the altercation between Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on the floor of the Senate during plenary a couple of days ago.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had protested her being reassigned to another chair without the courtesy of telling her. It escalated when she tried to make a contribution, but the Senate President would not let her, and insisted she would not be allowed to contribute from where she was because it was a breach of the Senate protocol. When she made to clarify, Akpabio ordered that she be “kicked” out of the Senate Chambers. That forced Akpoti-Uduaghan to talk back, explain herself, and tell Akpabio that she was not afraid of him.

She explained that she had always been on the receiving end of Akpabio’s condescending manner of speaking, and disclosed that the Senate President has been deliberately side-lining her and denying her of her privileges, including official trips.

The altercation, and what not a few people now see as a deliberate humiliation of women by Akpabio, has since taken the centre stage  of public discourse.

On Monday, Ezekwesili weighed in, and sent a notice to Akpabio that he would not come out smelling of roses next time he harasses any woman anywhere in the country, especially, those better qualified and well-elected than him.

Mrs Ezekwesili reminded Akpabio that for the untidiness at the Judiciary that saw him to the Senate, there was no way he could have been presiding over the Senate.

He wondered why Akpabio was always picking on female Senators, and told him to be ready next time because “enough is enough”.

Mrs Ezekwesili: “I tweeted last year that if not for the rottenness of our Judiciary,  Nigerians would not have an @Senator_Akpabio presiding over the upper house of our @nassnigeria-the Nigerian Senate @NGRSenate.

“This statement has been given proof by Mr Akpabio in the nearly  two years of his ‘leadership’ of the Senate.

“One issue stands out. Mr Akpabio implicitly thinks that his even more accomplished female colleagues must be humiliated in order for his ego to be assuaged.

“Is it not a shame that one day it is @NatashaAkpoti, another day, @Iretikindibe, and yet another day @NatashaAkpoti that are at the receiving end of the appalling misconduct of the topmost officer of our Legislature?

“And we wonder why Nigeria shamefully places at the lowest neighbourhood of the ranking  of countries on Women in public leadership,  specifically at 4 4%.

“I encourage the women in public leadership to never ever lose their voice. Continue to stand strong in your commitment to citizens and prove that representation matters.

“All aspects of data do in fact show that representation matters a lot.

“Next time Mr Akpabio harasses any woman well-elected unlike him and representing her constituency @ the National Assembly or any woman at all anywhere in the country, he must get ready. Enough is enough.”
