Lagos Assembly Crisis: Speaker Meranda Denounces Intimidation,  Hostile Takeover

0
Mojisola Lasbat Meranda

Lagos, Nigeria – In an alarming and unprecedented turn of events, all the police escorts assigned to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, as well as the security personnel guarding the Assembly complex, have been withdrawn without any explanation. This sudden action has left the Speaker and the entire legislative house dangerously exposed, raising serious concerns about the motives behind this decision.

It is important to stress that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda was duly elected by her colleagues, and her leadership was reinforced with a strong vote of confidence.

The timing of the withdrawal of security, combined with the hostile actions of the former Speaker and his associates, raises the question: Is this politically motivated, or is this part of a larger strategy to destabilize the current administration?

This troubling development is also noteworthy for what it might signify about the underlying gender dynamics at play. Could this act of aggression be a reflection of the deep-seated bias against female leadership in the political arena? Is Rt. Hon. Meranda’s role as a woman Speaker being used as a justification for such brazen intimidation and disruption?

It has come to our attention that these actions are tied to the ongoing internal power struggle regarding the removal of the former Speaker. Speculation suggests that this latest move is aimed at weakening the current leadership and creating instability within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

We demand an immediate clarification from both the police and the state government on their roles in these actions. The absence of security for those in leadership positions raises serious questions about the safety and protection of public officials in Lagos. If such intimidation can occur at the highest levels, what protection is there for the ordinary citizens of Lagos?

This situation must not be allowed to stand unchallenged. We call for a full investigation into these actions and demand accountability from all involved parties.

Victor Ganzallo

LAHA: Obasa Wins As Security Details  Restored,  Speaker Meranda’s Withdrawn

0
Mudashiru Obasa

By Adesina Soyooye

Lagos House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda is set to make another history.

On January 13, Meranda who was the Deputy Speaker of unarguably the most active, the most liquid, financially, the most independent, and the most metropolitan in Nigeria, made history when she was elected by her colleagues as the first Female Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly since inception.

But as this report is being written, she is set to make another history by becoming the Speaker who held the position the briefest period, and the most humiliated.

She was elected Speaker after Mudashiru Obasa, the longest serving Speaker of the House in Nigeria, whose Deputy she was, was impeached in his absence. Members, unanimously, almost, elected Meranda as the Speaker. But since then, she has hardly sat properly on the seat.

On return, Obasa rejected his impeachment, declared himself still Speaker, refused to go to the House, and instead proceeded to the Court to challenge his impeachment which he declared illegal.

In the past two weeks, there have been interventions by President Bola Tinubu, who it does seem has sympathy for Obasa, and who, allegedly, was not told, in advance that Obasa would be impeached, and the powerful Lagos Governance Advisory Council as well as the Lagos APC Chapter. The GAC is divided.

However, Thursday morning, it emerged that Obasa may be headed back as Speaker. According to reports, confirmed by an Aide to Meranda, all the Security details of his Principal have been withdrawn, leaving her and the Assembly vulnerable.

He said: In the early hours of Thursday, we woke up to the startling news that all the Security Details attached to Madam Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, have been withdrawn. This includes the Police and the DSS, leaving her exposed amidst the Speakership crisis.”

Conversely, all the Security Details of impeached Speaker Obasa have been restored, giving a strong impression that he is most likely headed to his powerful office as Speaker.

Meranda’s Aide appealed to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as the Chief Security Officer of the State to intervene. But Sanwo-Olu’s hands seem tied. If President Tinubu is behind Obasa, there is nothing much he can do.

The worrying aspect is how Sanwo-Olu would work with Obasa, who, allegedly, has no respect for him or his office. He had welcomed the Speakership of Meranda.

There is also the big problem of how the majority  of the House Members who impeached Obasa for arrogance, high-handedness,  and alleged corruption, denied strongly by Obasa, will work with him. They had, two times, passed a vote of implicit confidence on Meranda.

Two days ago when the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, suspended by the Assembly  on the day Obasa was impeached, dared go to office to resume, he was booed out of the premises.

Predatory Pricing and Market Domination: A Case Study of Dangote Refinery vs. NNPC’s Newly Revived Refinery

0

By Abraham Amah

The practice of deliberately reducing prices to eliminate competition and subsequently increasing them once rivals are weakened or eliminated is known as predatory pricing. This strategy is often employed by large firms with significant financial resources to suppress competition, allowing them to dominate a market in the long run. Recent developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector raise concerns about whether Dangote Refinery’s pricing approach is a strategic attempt to undermine the newly operational NNPC-operated refinery, which has just resumed production. While Dangote’s reduced fuel prices appear to benefit consumers in the short term, the long-term consequences of this pricing war must be carefully analyzed.

In recent weeks, Dangote Refinery announced the sale of petroleum products at rates significantly lower than both the NNPC’s refinery prices and imported fuel costs. This move, while seemingly aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports, coincides with the NNPC’s renewed efforts to revamp its refinery operations. The timing of Dangote’s price reduction has sparked speculation that it could be an attempt to push NNPC out of the refining market, ensuring that Dangote Refinery remains the dominant local supplier.

If this is indeed a predatory pricing strategy, the risks to the NNPC refinery and other potential competitors are significant. The NNPC, which has only just restarted domestic refining after years of inactivity, still requires time and investment to optimize production. If forced to operate at a loss due to Dangote’s aggressive pricing, the government-owned refinery may struggle to sustain operations, leading to reduced production capacity or even shutdowns. This scenario would effectively hand Dangote Refinery a near-monopoly over Nigeria’s refining sector, limiting future competition.

Should the NNPC refinery be unable to compete and either scale down or halt production, Dangote Refinery would gain unrivaled control over the domestic supply of refined petroleum products. With no major competitors left, Dangote could then gradually increase fuel prices, setting rates at levels that maximize its profits while keeping alternative suppliers out of the market. This would negatively impact consumers, who, having initially benefited from lower prices, would find themselves paying higher costs in the long run due to the absence of competition.

Beyond the immediate competition between Dangote and NNPC, this situation also discourages new entrants from investing in Nigeria’s refining sector. Potential investors observing the aggressive pricing war may be deterred from entering the industry, fearing financial losses similar to those that could cripple the NNPC refinery. This would limit future innovations, investment opportunities, and the expansion of Nigeria’s refining capacity, keeping the country dependent on a single dominant player.

Regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) must closely monitor the unfolding market dynamics. If Dangote Refinery’s pricing strategy is found to be anti-competitive, regulatory intervention may be necessary to ensure a level playing field, prevent market manipulation, and protect consumers from future monopolistic pricing. The government must also provide strategic support to the NNPC refinery to enable it to compete effectively and ensure the sustainability of domestic refining.

In conclusion, while Dangote Refinery’s recent price reductions may seem consumer-friendly, they could potentially be a strategic move to eliminate competition, particularly from the newly operational NNPC refinery. If unchecked, this approach could result in a long-term monopoly over Nigeria’s fuel supply, leading to higher prices, reduced investment, and limited options for consumers. Therefore, regulators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders must take proactive measures to maintain market fairness and prevent a single entity from controlling the nation’s refining industry.

Threat To Life Of NAFDAC DG: Afenifere Urges FG To Provide Adequate Security

Mojisola Adeyeye - NAFDAC DG

By Ayodele Oni

Also Asks for the protection of the Chairmen of the EFCC and NDLEA

Afenifere, Yoruba socio cultural Group, has advised the federal government to ensure safety of life of Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency For Food, Drugs Administration Control, (NAFDAC) and others in the forefront to rid Nigeria of bad elements.

The NAFDAC’s DG had raised the alarm that drugs counterfeiters were after her life and those of her workers.

Adeyeye, who briefed State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said, “I told you about the attempted murder about six months ago.

“One of our staff members in Kano had his child kidnapped because he was doing his job. Fortunately, the child escaped. For me, I have two policemen living in my house 24/7 in Abuja and Lagos. I don’t have a life.

“I can’t go anywhere without police escorts. That’s not my way of living, but I don’t have a choice because we must save our country. Nonetheless, I also use common sense.”

NAFDAC is currently on a nationwide crackdown on illicit drug trade, which saw it raiding the country’s three major open drug markets of Ariaria and Eziukwu in Aba, Bridge Head Market in Onitsha and Idumota Drug Market in Lagos.

Afenifere, in a statement on Thursday, signed by Kole Omololu, Organising Secretary, stated that “The recent distress call by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, regarding threats to her life and those of her staff must not be dismissed with mere platitudes.

“She stands at the frontline of Nigeria’s battle against counterfeit drugs, toxic consumables, and the nefarious interests of syndicates profiting from human suffering.

“Any attempt on her life is an assault on public health, national security, and the very fabric of a society that aspires to be governed by law and order.

“Nigeria cannot afford to abandon those who risk everything for the greater good. Public officials like Prof. Adeyeye, the Chairman of the EFCC, and the head of the NDLEA must be fortified with comprehensive security apparatus, including armoured vehicles, elite personnel, and advanced surveillance systems.

“Their families must also be shielded from harm, both during their tenure and long after they leave office. If criminals sense that the state lacks the will to protect its most critical functionaries, impunity will reign supreme, and the nation’s institutions will collapse under the weight of fear and intimidation.

“Afenifere takes an unequivocal stand: any threat to Prof. Adeyeye’s life shall not be tolerated. Nigeria cannot close its eyes while purveyors of deadly drugs roam free, flooding our land with poison. This is a battle for national survival, and the stakes could not be higher.

“We call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act with the urgency and decisiveness this moment demands. An immediate security upgrade around Prof. Adeyeye, her family, and her dedicated operatives is imperative.

“She did not abandon a lucrative international career to be left vulnerable to assassins. She returned home to serve, and her sacrifice must be acknowledged, protected, and applauded by all discerning Nigerians.”

Danger Alert: Rivers Alarmed Over Use Of Chemicals In Production Of Cassava, Warns Of Deadly Effect

0
Dr Adaeze Oreh - Rivers Commissioner for Health

By Ayodele Oni

Fufu, like rice, is made from fermented cassava and pounded into a smooth, stretchy dough, typically served with various Nigerian soups, is one of the staple foods in many Nigerian households.

It is mainly consumed in the south east and south south areas of the country but gradually spreading to almost all parts of the country.

Fufu production, has become a major source of income to most farmers as its price is determined by the cost of cassava, which is the major raw material for its production.

In view of the gains, the Rivers State government has observed that some harmful chemicals are now being added by producers in an attempt to increase yeild and increase profit.

The Rivers State government has therefore issued a warning against the use of detergent and other harmful chemicals in the production of ‘fufu’ within the state.

In a public health advisory released in Port Harcourt, the state Ministry of Health raised concerns over reports from a local radio station indicating that some producers were adding detergent to fufu to speed up processing and increase profit margins.

The advisory, signed by the Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Ndubisi Akpuh, on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, emphasized the severe health risks associated with this practice and declared it strictly prohibited.

The statement warned that detergents contain harmful chemicals that can cause poisoning, leading to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Long-term consumption can result in severe damage to vital organs, including the liver, kidneys, and lungs.

According to the advisory, detergent chemicals can cause internal bleeding, ulcers, and irritation in the digestive system.

Some even contain endocrine-disrupting substances that may lead to reproductive health issues and an increased risk of chronic illnesses, including cancer.

The Ministry highlighted that using non-food-grade substances in food production violates both national and international food safety regulations. Offenders could face legal consequences, including fines, business closures, or imprisonment.

The advisory urged food producers to use only approved food-grade ingredients and adhere to best practices in food hygiene and safety.

Consumers were also encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious food processing activities to health authorities.

The Ministry pledged to collaborate with other regulatory agencies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.

It called on everyone to take collective responsibility in safeguarding public health and reiterated the message: “Say NO to using detergents in fufu and other food production.”

“We Have Four Female Senators, Two Are Vocal, Two Are Almost Non-existent” – Aisha Yesufu

Aisha Yesufu and Godswill Akpabio

By Adesina Soyooye

Female Activist, Aisha Yesufu, has weighed into the altercation between Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Senator who represents Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The two last Thursday at Plenary, had a serious argument over seat allocation which quickly degenerated into a shouting match.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had rejected a new seat allocated to her, and thus, refused to go to the new seat allocated to her. For that, SP Akpabio refused to recognise her when she raised a hand to speak. He advised her to vacate old seat for the new one allocated to her in order to be recognised to speak. But it was an advise she refused to adhere and instead opted to explain herself. The situation degenerated when Akpabio ordered that the Senator be “kicked” out of the Senate Chambers. An infuriated Akpoti-Uduaghan responded in like manner and told Akpabio, “I am not afraid of you.”

The altercation has since attracted a deluge of reactions – for and against.

Weighing in, Aisha Yesufu, said that Akpabio, who, in her words,  “should be in jail” is harassing the only two active Female Senators – Akpoti-Uduaghan  and Ireti Kingibe – of four. She said the other two female Senators, whose names she did not mention, remain almost non-existent.

Yesufu in a post on X:

”We have only four female Senators. Two are almost nonexistent.

“The vocal two are being harassed left, right, and center by Senator Akpabio, who should have been in jail if Nigeria had an incorruptible judiciary.”

The Senate has referred Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to its Ethics and Code of Conduct Committee for, perhaps, disciplinary action, which could be suspension.

But the Senator has also filed a suit against Akpabio, his Legislative Aide, Patrick Mfon and the Federal Government for defamation of character at a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja. She is asking for a whopping N100bn for general damages, and another N300m in legal expenses.

This is the second time Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan would clash with Akpabio.

Recall, too, that in December 2024, FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe decided to walk out of the Senate chamber when Akpabio pointedly ignored her, and refused to entertain her motion.

“Omokri Has No Shame, Has Wretched Upbringing” – El-Rufai”

0
Nasir El-Rufai and Reno Omokri

By Adesina Soyooye

In response to the serious allegations made against him by Reno Omokri, Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, has, literally, dismissed him as one beneath contempt. El-Rufai had some choice words for one of the worst critics of President Bola Tinubu who, to the shock of not a few people, turned around, 360 degrees, as soon as Tinubu was sworn into office and became his admirer and strong defender.

Said El-Rufai in his description of Omokri’s character: “Omokri lacks total shamelessness, has wretched upbringing, and intensely craves for quick easy money.”

To attract this description, Omokri had thrown himself  smack in the middle of El-Rufai’s criticism of the President Tinubu Government. El-Rufai had urged Nigerians to vote Tinubu out in 2027. He also clarified  his non-clearance by the Senate for a Ministerial position when he appeared before the members. He said they adhered to the President’s order not to clear him.Ironically,  El-Rufai said it was Tinubu who publicly begged him to be in his Government, discussed with him over a period of two months, told him he would be his Government’s Minister for Power, but inexplicably changed his mind and ordered his non-clearance by the Senate.

Throwing himself into it, Omokri responded that El-Rufai was not cleared because “he is a diplomatic baggage.” He also accused El-Rufai of perpetrating genocide in Southern Kaduna when he was the Governor of Kaduna State and had admitted to paying killer-herdsmen. Omokri said more:

“Nasir el-Rufai’s government was indicted in the Zaria Shiite massacre of Saturday, December 12, 2015, where 438 Shiite men, women, children and infants were slaughtered in one of Africa’s worst human rights violations.

“Additionally, Mr. El-Rufai was specifically cited for demolishing the homes of his political opponents in Kaduna.

“Finally, his reckless utterances against Christians, whereby on Saturday, January 27, 2013, he insulted Jesus Christ, and on Friday, January 18, 2019, when he said, ‘Even if I bring the Pope, Christians will never vote for me.’’

El-Rufai had ignored Omokri.  But that was until a post on X by Imran U. Wakili chided Omokri for forgetting so easily how El-Rufai mentored him, gave him freedom and public recognition. In the post, he attached a picture of El-Rufai and Omokri.

He said:

“The greatest thing a mentor can offer is the freedom, recognition, and opportunities you need to succeed in life, far more valuable than money.

“A former minister who noticed you when you were unknown and helped you build a reputation has already given you everything. Unfortunately, wisdom has nothing to do with age!”

Acknowledging Wakili’s post, El-Rufai, in his verified handle @elrufai, quoted Wakili’s post,  and in the process, tackled Omokri.

El-Rufai: “Please Imran, let them be.

“They are PR consultants and online influencers. It is a new profession thriving in the Renewed Hope era because propaganda can build infrastructure, eliminate insecurity and address our economic challenges.

“The only qualifications needed to be on the payroll are (1) moral flexibility, (2) total shamelessness, (3) selective amnesia, (4) wretched upbringing and (5) intense craving for quick and easy money. The future doesn’t matter. Integrity is debatable. Truth is out!!”

Both El-Rufai and Omokri were good, if not close friends before politics tore them apart as it did National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and El-Rufai.

APC Leaders Say Tinubu Has Turned Economy Around, Gives Him Thumbs-up

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday expressed his determination to work harder for the country’s greater good, assuring that the Nigerian economy was on the path of recovery.

The President spoke in Abuja at the All-Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee meeting, during which he received a vote of confidence for his administration’s good performance.

He said the commendation from the party’s highest decision-making organ was a call for more hard work. He promised not to fail the party faithful.

“I am happy with your vote of confidence, and I accept it. The vote is a challenge to do more work; we will vigorously pursue our sovereignty in food security, investment and development.

“I am happy with food prices coming down, especially as Ramadan approaches. The Sun is high, and the sky is bright outside. While the rest of the world unravels, we see growth in Nigeria. We are seeing a gradual return to stability. We are seeing improvements. I thank you, governors, ” President Tinubu said.

President Tinubu thanked Nigerians for their continued belief and trust in the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

He pledged to continue working assiduously with other arms of government to ensure the greater good for Nigerians and commended APC governors and executives for their continued and unwavering commitment.

“I’m grateful to all Nigerians for the electoral successes recorded from one state to the other. Governors, you have embraced these changes, and I thank the leadership of our party. I also thank members of the National Assembly for expeditiously considering the budget.

“We can only build the party on a progressive platform to deliver good service to Nigerians.

The President also commended the party’s National Working Committee for its performance and called for measures to end some of the crises in the states.

“The National Working Committee is doing a very good job; I am pleased with them. However, there are a few conflicts in the various states. Let’s set up committees to look into the lingering problems in the states and appeal to these party leaders in various states to please be calm and be collaborative,” the President said.

The party’s National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, thanked members for their steadfastness in the face of challenges and assured them that the party would continue to deliver on its electoral promises.

“Though the journey has been very challenging for us as a ruling party, given the big task we have at hand and the expectations from Nigerians, We can sufficiently submit that we have collectively risen to the occasion and challenges,” he said.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting President Tinubu in lifting the nation from its economic and developmental woes.

“The Senate will expeditiously pass bills that would enhance our national development, improve the economy and redirect our national pathway,” he said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas commended the President for his vision and courage in making unpopular but essential decisions.

He said the decisions were pivotal for Nigeria’s developmental efforts.

The APC National Executive Council meeting took place a day after the party’s caucus meeting on Tuesday night. At the Caucus meeting, party leaders also praised President Tinubu’s administration for turning the economy around, with GDP growing by 3.84 per cent in the last quarter of 2024 and inflation going downhill.

Fmr Gov Bafarawa Cautions President Tinubu Against Anarchy

0
Attahiru Dalhatu Bafaraw and Bola Tinubu

By Ayodele Oni

“Your ascension to the office of the President was because opposition was allowed to thrive”

The fate of opposition political parties under President Bola Tinubu’s administration has caught the attention of a former Governor of Sokoto state, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.

In an open letter to the President, Bafarawa, a two term Governor on the ticket of the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party, (ANPP), advised Tinubu, to allow dissent voices in the country in the interest of democracy.

The former governor cautioned that “Anybody who is advising you to muzzle the opposition wants to deceive you into tarnishing your hard-earned reputation as a democrat.

“Killing the opposition will be harmful both to your democratic records and to the overall political growth of the country. In a country where there is no opposition, democracy dies.

“Do not allow democracy to die because it is the pillar upon which good governance, peace and progress stand.

“I therefore call on you, Mr President, to shun the temptation of enthroning a one-party order in Nigeria. Nigeria can ill afford a one party arrangement.

“It is a recipe for anarchy. Rather, sustenance of a democratic order is the easiest route to move a country forward. It is what will enable us to build a country that will be beneficial not only to the present generation of Nigerians but also to generations yet unborn.

“Remember, if those who came before you killed the opposition, there would have been no vehicle for you to get to your present political destination.

“Rather than scheme to decimate the opposition, it will be better for you to borrow a leaf from the United States, which has institutionalized two strong political parties around which the wheel of democracy revolves. The greatest legacy you can leave as president is to continue to allow the wheel of democracy to roll.

“Your ascension to the foremost political position in the country was made possible because the opposition was allowed to thrive. Those who were there before you gave opposition politics a chance.

“You are, as a matter fact, a product of opposition politics. You will therefore be making a grave mistake if you allow yourself to be carried away by the temporary power at your disposal by not giving the opposition a breathing space.

“I urge you, Mr President, to allow opposition politics to be . Do not throw away the ladder with which you climbed to the top.”

On security, Bafarawa, noted that things are yet to improved as expected by Nigerians, and urged the administration to fulfil electoral promises.

“But you will recall, Mr President, that you promised to improve the living condition of Nigerians. You also promised to secure the lives and property of the people. You have a historical responsibility to keep to these all- important electoral promises.

“Regrettably, the situation is still looking bleak nearly two years since you assumed the reins of governance. The blight of insecurity which you promised to curtail is getting out of hand.

“The economic outlook is frightening. Inflation is galloping out of control. Hunger is ravaging the land. There are cries of anguish all over the country. This slide, Mr President, must be urgently arrested without further delay.”
