IBB: Coward of the Niger

0
Abdul Oroh and Ibrahim Bagangida

By Abdul Oroh

At the height of his absolute power, General Ibrahim Babangida made it known both in words and deeds that he was a man who craved a space in the history of Nigeria as a soldier- statesman;  the creator of a new socio-economic and political order, albeit, unmerited, except in infamy.  When Babangida ousted Major General Muhammadu Buhari in a palace coup in 1985, he sold a dummy to the Nigerian people that he was a reformer who came to salvage Nigeria from the catastrophe and political debacle  of the past.

Nigerians saw a gap-toothed smiling face, solemn in a manner of speaking, purportedly popular in the barracks amongst the junior officers and sincere in his promises, which on the surface, were attractive. But after eight years of bloodletting and chaos, he ended like his contemporaries in Africa: Idi Amin of Uganda, Emperor Jean – Bedel Bokassa of Central African Republic, Mobutu Sese- Seko of Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo) and many other African tyrants who ended their reign in ignominy.

When Babangida, who was then and now more known as IBB, was asked in one of his numerous interviews who were his heroes as he celebrated his cravings as Prince of the Niger, a hollow conferment by his corrupted hagiographers, he compared himself with Hannibal, the Carthaginian general and statesman, and King Shaka of the Zulus.  He gushed out immodestly: We are not just in government, we are in power’’. In another infamous statement   he warned that nobody should take the human rights policy of his government as a sign of ‘’weakness’’.  He might have added that he would be in power for ever and would be as powerful as he wants to be.

After all, did he not proclaim himself President when he ousted the Buhari draconian regime when he was not an elected president? A break from previous military rulers?  Was that not a conscious decision with a whiff of totalitarian aspiration?

Like every other step he took in his eight- year plutocracy, Babangida left every one guessing about his objective or ultimate goal. He fooled Nigerians many times over but as we say in Nigeria, many days are for the thief, but one day for the owner of the property.

As his paid hagiographers who he had plucked from a crippled academia celebrated his cunning, manipulative and crooked dispositions with glee, he waxed stronger  by conjuring like a magician, every scheme of deception, justifying every cunny moves, every predatory raid on the Central  Bank; every plundering of natural resources like oil wells, national parastatals or construction contracts scams; every massacre of students ; every execution of friends and foes alike; every shift in the political terrain, even if they  were patently against the will and interest of the Nigerian  people. These were all recorded in his favour while he wallowed in glory.

When General Babangida unfolded the transition program in 1985, he promised that he would hand over in 1992 but made it clear that the military will control and supervise it.  The Nigerian people were generally optimistic that their democratic aspirations had not been completely crushed by the military elite that had placed itself above the people. The Buhari regime had not given such hope.

Babangida had taken some corrective measures which gave the impression that he was not only aware of the need to turn over governance to a democratically elected government, he had also taken steps to address the perpetual problem of failure to conduct generally acceptable elections in the country. His Economic agenda prescribed by the World Bank and IMF – the Structural Agenda Programme was not to be challenged or criticized. It had no alternative, Nigerians were told.

In 1985, Babangida gave the impression that he would correct the failings of the civilian administration. Many Nigerians thought it was the right step to take after the ouster of the autocratic regime of General Buhari which had no agenda to transfer power to the civilians. Except for the War Against Indiscipline WAI that he fought for the 18 months the regime lasted.

However, the transition had been shifted several times, and almost eight years down the road, Nigerians were still hopeful that military would soon see the need to respect the people and their democratic aspirations assuaged. As Babangida continued to shift the transition dates and juggled the teleguided program on the ground that they were looking for new breed politicians to replace the junta, it became clearer that the military junta had long-term plans to stay in power.

The creation of new states, the frequent dissolution of state organs, and the reshuffling of his cabinet and state governments were all part of the elaborate scheme to buy time and prolong the transition agenda. In what was clearly a glimpse into his political direction, he said in one of his speeches, while quoting paraphrasing Franz Fanon that, it was the lot of his generation to discover the mission of National rebirth and not to betray it, but like a Freudian slip, he revealed that the military will be the ‘’fountain head’’ of the new order.

In other words, a culture of militarism was his ultimate goal. ‘’ ’’This administration’’ he said with the finality of the Almighty, ‘’intends to supervise political succession as the batons of power passes from one person to the other’’. The civilian political elite too desperate to replace the military took no notice of the implication of the statement neither did they  have the nerve to challenge the junta’s deception. They played along, hoping that some day the table would turn.

Babangida had hired and ‘settled’ some of Nigeria’s foremost right-wing intellectuals to embrace his sordid plan and they spared no cost or cared about their esteemed intellectual prowess, and personal integrity as they tried to rebrand and venerate the tyrant as a benevolent dictator, a reformist, the ‘prince of the Niger” who was determined to transform ‘the giant of Africa’ to an el-dorado.

The junta’s socio-economic programs were coloured in absolute terms as the only way, the only path, without alternatives. Any attempt to propose alternatives was repressed as alternative opinions were seen as  sabotage. A decree was established to create a military Tribunal to try saboteurs, while the press faced summary punishment as newspaper houses were routinely closed and journalists detained.

Between May 23-31 1989, anti-SAP riots broke out. Protests against the structural Adjustment programs (SAP) swept across tertiary institution all over the country with over 100 students killed by security forces, comprising of police and soldiers. The junta had tasted the fury of Nigerian youths; it became clear that the junta would be challenged by force if it continued to manipulate the transition program amid harsh economic conditions which were dictated by the International Monetary Fund IMF.

The credibility of the junta had been tested and Nigerians began to mobilize and declared an end to military rule as it was not an antidote to bad governance, indiscipline, and corruption which were the justification for ousting the civilian administration in 1983.

On March 5th, 1986, barely a year of his assumption of office, Babangida ordered the execution of Major General Mamman Vatsa, his childhood friend, and Minister of Federal Capital Territory Abuja, and nine officers from the Army, Navy and the Air force in an alleged coup which many Nigerians, doubted and which no real proof has ever been produced.

Vatsa and the officers had been executed when Major General Domkat Bali, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told a bewildered nation they were shot ‘‘about an hour ago”. General Bali, after his retirement, later granted an interview where he confessed that there was no strong evidence of a coup but Babangida wanted to eliminate Vatsa who he saw as his rival since their childhood days in high school. To give vent to this rather belated confession by General Bali, the usual period of confirmation of judgment of military tribunals by the Armed Forces Ruling Council, AFRC, one of the rituals associated with coups in Nigeria was not even observed. Appeals for clemency by Nigeria’s foremost writers- Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, and John Pepper-Clarke were pointedly ignored even when the foxy tyrant had promised to convey their appeals to the confirming authority.

With these executions, it was clear that the benevolent dictator created by his hagiographers had become a bloody tyrant. As if the regime was lusting for blood, 48 soldiers who were tried for participating in the Major Gideon Orka Coup of April 22nd 1990 had been executed on July 27th 1990. Another batch of 27 soldiers who were earlier acquitted by the Military Tribunal headed by Major General Ike Nwachukwu, were retried by another tribunal and convicted were executed.

These waves of executions and  the parcel bomb assassination of Dele Giwa Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine on October 19, 1986 which  his secret services purportedly  carried out, to cover up drug trafficking by wives of senior military officers and the annulment of the June 12thn 1993 Presidential election won by M.K.O Abiola,  completed a journey of  criminality, disservice, an assault on the military creed of honour, chilvary and loyalty to the constitution and the nation.

At the winter of his life Babangida has not let go.  The recent publication of his autobiography, A Journey in Service, as to be expected, has aroused public angst, and controversy. Not expectedly, he failed to reconcile with history, still dreaming of redemption without penitence, without embracing the truth, without confronting his demons that controlled him and are still controlling him, to plead to be freed of his vices, repentance from his crimes and atonement for his blood lust.

Babangida did not realize early enough that his time was up and that Nigerians would challenge his authoritarian drift. He believed every Nigerian has a price and with adequate settlement, he could bribe his way through every road blocks or checking points. The easier path, as Ike Okonta once said, was to ‘’democratize corruption’’. The more difficult path was like a thief which he was, literarily, to escape into a life of affluence,  bequeathing  a horrid legacy of a ‘’corrupted  democracy’’ and the culture of impunity,  predation and militarism.

He has lived a long life, the old age he denied many of his peers- friends and foes alike. May God forgive him.

Fmr. Ondo Ist Lady, Betty, Asks Akpabio To Step Down …Says More Natashas Needed  At NASS

By Ayodele Oni

Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of the late Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu,  has called on the Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, to step down amid allegations of se3ual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, PDP Kogi Central.

The call, posted on her verified X account early Sunday has generated mixed reactions from netizens. Many stand firmly in support of her, while others express opposing views.

In her post, she stated: “In more civilised climes, Akpabio would have, by now, stepped down from office to clear his name and fight his battle.

“Drafting his wife to fight Senator Natasha is highly disingenuous and an attempt to dodge the bullets thereby throwing his wife under the bus.

Dem miss road be dat!

“Back to the crux of the matter. In the first instance, reassigning seats without one’s knowledge is wrong! It’s disrespectful and infringes on one’s right.

“Even if it had been done in the past, and men, for whatever reason, cowardly, decided to keep mute, but a bold Natasha, belled the cat by saying in unequivocal terms, that it was wrong and we took notice.

“A wrong approach can be corrected no matter how long it had been applied. That’s the argument. Some unserious women are talking “cho cho cho,” blaming Natasha for being sentimental, and that has been Natasha’s way.

“What a pointless argument! Natasha voiced her frustration, ‘having endured a lot,’ according to her. That’s courage! That’s the kind of women we should support to represent us at the national assembly.

“Nigerian women have been so mistreated and overpowered in all spheres of life and consequently, cowed into silence. Is it not a BIG SHAME that Nigeria has only 4 female senators out of 109?

“We sure needed Natasha’s outburst for the country to take a second look at the National Assembly to know what is happening in those chambers.

“Not a few Nigerians believe that our interests are not represented at the National Assembly, tagging it as a retirement home which calls for an overhaul.

“Like Rosa Parks, Natasha is on the path to making history. Nigerian women should rally round her. We need more of her type come next dispensation. Good girls don’t get corner office, according to Millie Odiambo, the popular Kenyan female legislator.”

Betty Akeredolu’s attempt to represent one of the senatorial districts in Imo state, was frustrated as she lost the primary election due to some powerful forces against her ambition.

“I Went To Akpabio, Asked Him To Extend Respect To My Wife” –  Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Husband

Chief Emmanuel O Uduaghan and Godswill Akpabio

By Adesina Soyooye

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband, High Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, has declared his wife a woman of truth.

Chief Uduaghan, the “Alema of Warri Kingdom”, was weighing in for the first time since the clash between his wife, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In his statement dated 2nd March 2025, Chief Uduaghan said he was not unaware of what had, for months, been happening between his wife and Akpabio.

He said his wife had, all along, been briefing him on her harassment by the Senate President.

He disclosed that since he considered Akpabio a family friend, and given his status as a traditional leader, he chose the path of peace by approaching the Senate President to extend coutesy and respect to his wife, as well as treat her with the dignity she deserves.

However, he said, his approach seem not to have worked as she continued to complain to him about Akpabio’s attitude towards her.

A few days ago, it boiled over on the floor of the Senate  when both clashed over allocation of seats in the Chambers at Plenary.

Akpabio ordered that Akpoti-Uduaghan be walked out of the Senate. The situation deteriorated when an Akpabio Aide, Patrick Mfon, posted alleged derogatory statements he on Social Media. In response, the Senator sued Akpabio, Mfon and the Federal Government to the tune N100bn for general damages over alleged defamation, and also the sum of  N300m for legal fees.

But the sh*t hit the fan when she followed up with an interview on Arise Television’s “The Morning Show” where disclosed that the problem between her and Akpabio goes beyond allocation of seats. She sensationally revealed that her rejection of Akpabio’s inappropriate demand from her was at the root of the mistreatment and intimidation and discrimination she had been enduring in Akpabio’s hands.

Stung, Akpabio’s wife, Unoma, at a press conference she addressed on February the 28th declared her husband a responsible man who Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was out to blackmai and create content with the allegation of se€ual harassment against him. She then sued the Senator to the tune of N250bn for emotional blackmail.

What worried her most was that the two families have a close relationship.

In the evening of Saturday, Ist March, High Chief Uduaghan took a stand by his wife. He emphasized that the serious issues raised by his wife should no be confused with frivolities. He, then, asked that his wife, whom he described as loving and devoted, be allowed by Senator Akpabio to do the work for which she was duly elected by her people, while the issues involved are being sorted out by the authorities and the Courts.

Following is the full text of the statement which he personally signed.

“I had, initially, refrained from commenting on the ongoing dispute between my beloved wife, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio. However, recent developments have compelled me to issue this statement.

“It is clear that certain sentiments are being stirred up unnecessarily, distracting from the serious underlying allegations which should concern every discerning individual with sound family values.

“Without prejudice to the ongoing legal proceedings, I wish to emphasize that my wife was duly elected by her people due to the immense love, respect and confidence they have in her and she is committed to delivering quality representation to her district and the nation at large.

“She is a devoted wife, and the bond we share is deep and unwavering. She has always remained truthful, even in the face of adversity.

“My wife has confided in me about her interactions with the Senate President whom I considered a family friend.

“In response, I approached the matter with the utmost maturity and responsibility as it is my duty as a traditional leader who has immense respect for constituted authority and uphols core family values, foster peace and harmony.

“I personally met with the Senate President and respectfully urged him to extend the courtesy and respect my wife deserves, while also honoring the friendship between us. We reached an understanding and agreed to resolve the issue amicably.

“However, despite the agreement, my wife continues to express concerns about the harassment she has endured from the Senate President.

“I have unwavering faith in my wife’s loyalty and am fully committed to our marriage which is grounded in love, compassion and mutual respect.

“I would never trade her for anything, as she is the greatest joy of my life.

“I now respectfully urge the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Senate President to treat my beloved wife with the respect and dignity she truly deserves while the relevant authorities and the Court determine the underlying issues.

The se€ual harassment saga rocking the Senate, between Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has continued to generate controversy accompanied by litigation. But  concerned Niger Delta Stakeholders have called on both parties to sheathe their sword and stop the media spat.

Ayirimi Emami, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  Delta South, has called for restraint in the escalating war of words between the Lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate President.

He demanded the  immediate end to the ongoing media spat between supporters of Akpabio and  Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying enemies of President Bola Tinubu administration are exploiting the situation to distract Nigerians from the progressive achievements of the federal government.

Emami, who said this in a statement released in Ugborodo, Warri South – West Local Government Area of Delta State, Saturday March 1, observed that the avoidable media war took the minds of majority of Nigerians off the critical issue of the N54.99 trillion 2025 budget President Tinubu signed into law Friday February 28.

According to him, rather than focus on the nitty gritty of the 2025 budget and how it would accelerate “the palpable progress being made in the country” many Nigerians are exerting their energies on the disagreement between the two distinguished Senators.

Whilst emphasing the need for the integrity of the Senate to be respected, Chief Emami, noted: ”as family, we are making efforts to resolve the misunderstanding between the Distinguished Senate President, Goodswill Akpabio and our sister– in-law, Senator Natasha Akpoti–Uduaghan. I want to use this medium to appeal to both parties to embrace peace, for the interest of the Nation.

In the same vein, Peter Ifure Udomiyang, President, Concerned Niger Delta Youths Vanguard, said that it was necessary to put an end to this crisis, as it is simply throwing the South South into crisis.

“This is becoming a South South War, we shouldn’t allow enemies of the region pitch us against each other.  Both parties should bring an end to this national embarassment”.

Udomiyang added that the situation has portrayed the Nation in bad light to the outside World, as our democracy has become a laughing stock.

“We need to change the narratives and shouldn’t draw ourselves backwards with all this silly accusations and counter accusations.  There are some people trying to exploit the situation and make we the South South wage war against each other”, he said.

Udomiyang however demanded a thorough investigation into the allegations, with Justice served.

Prince Eniola Joseph Ojajuni

Eniola Olajuni, the National President of the Afenifere Youth Council, has been released after spending 12 harrowing days in captivity.

What led to his release is still being sketchy, but Biodun Aderohunmu, the National Secretary of the Youths Council, confirmed Olajuni’s release in a brief WhatsApp message on Saturday. He simply stated: “He has been released.”

The brief did not, however, state whether his release was as a result of effort by the special police squad or the payment of the N100 million demanded by the abductors.

Olajuni’s kidnappers had demanded a staggering ₦100 million ransom, along with two tricycles, in exchange for his freedom.

The situation took a dire turn when a video surfaced showing Olajuni, held at gunpoint, pleading with Nigerians to come to his aid and raise funds for his release.

In response to the crisis, Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun ordered the deployment of the Intelligence Response Team to secure Olajuni’s safe release. The team’s efforts may have led to Olajuni’s freedom.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) had also condemned Olajuni’s abduction, calling for his immediate release and urging the government to take decisive action against the kidnappers.
