“How Fubara Made Us Dump Atiku, Work For Tinubu”  – Abiye Sekibo

By Adesina Soyooye

Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 General Elections, must be shaking his head in utter this disbelief. For, if he decides to run for the Presidency again in 2027, his Rivers State core supporters  in 2023 will not be available for him.

Until now, if you asked Atiku the person who will never support him in Rivers State, for example, all his ten fingers will point at Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of the State and now, Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Wike, in same Party with Atiku, PDP, did not hide it that he was not going to support Atiku; that his full  support was for the eventual winner, then Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, now President Bola Tinubu.

For, those he trusted, those  who wer with him, it has now been revealed, have since pledged their loyalty for Tinubu.

This unsettling revelation came from his main man, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, a former Minister for Transportation. He was Atiku’s points man in Rivers State. And, in the heat of the Campaigns, in fact, on the eve of Atiku’s arrival in the State for his campaign, Sekibo was attacked, by  thugs and Security Agents allegedly loyal to Wike while he was at the venue of the upcoming Campaign to supervise the preparations. He and Wike, once close political allies, have aince, fallen out badly over his relationship with Atiku.

But in an unforced revelation he has just made, Dr Sekibo let it be known that he and  some others who  worked for Atiku, have since transferred their loyalty to Tinubu. According to him, their abandonment of  Atiku is the handiwork of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Fubara, he disclosed,  convinced them to shift loyalty to Tinubu instead of. Atiku.

Sekibo revealed this on Thursday when he spoke at the inauguration of Borokiri Fire Service facility rehabilitated by Governor Fubara.

He said far from the stories they tell Mr President in Abuja that those around Governor Fubara werw against the President, they are 100% with him.

His words: “Mr President, our own President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, lend me your ears. We, the Rivers people have always supported the Government at the center. We have always worked with the Government at the centre

“This Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has convinced Rivers people that they must stand with their President, and we do stand with you. There might be persons telling you stories, especially, when they see people like me who were core Atiku men. They will say: ‘Don’t you see it is Atiku people that are with the Governor?’

“There are also Atiku people that are with them there in Abuja. But the Governor has convinced us that the place to be is with our President and Mr President, we stand with you. We stand with you because that is the right thing to do.

“The Elections delivered you as our President and so we stand with you. The Election delivered this Governor, our son. For the first time in 24 years, the Ijaw nation in more than eight Local Government Areas of Rivers State have the opportunity of having one of their own as the Governor of this State. We stand with him. We have no choice.

“Through his work in Rivers, the Governor has shown that the interest of the people and the unity of the country are his priority.”

The Governor, he said, has worked tirelessly so as to create no problems for the Federal Government, not even, he noted, when the funds due to the State were withheld. Fubara, Sekibo emphasized, kept all essential services working.

Fubara made this statement in the heat of the political crisis I’m the State which not a few people think, is aimed at either impeaching the Governor by Pro-Wike Legislators or declaring a state of emergency in the State.

No Going Back On The Closure Of Schools Over Ramadan – Kano Govt.

Abba Yusuf - Governor of Kano State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Despite strident opposition ,the Kano state Government on Thursday March 6, 2025 insisted that public and private schools will remain closed through out the Ramadan period.

Kano, Kebbi ,Bauchi and Katsina states’ decision to shut down educational institutions till the end of the holy month has been met with a plethora  of criticisms from not a few quarters.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN , the Middle  Belt Forum and many Civil Society groups have all condemned the directive as  retrogressive, insensitive to  the diversity of the country, and even outrightly against the fundamental rights of the people.

The umbrella body of Christians in the country  CAN, described  the directive as representing a serious threat to  educational continuity, equity and National cohesion.

Consequently, CAN, in a statement issued by its National President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Sunday, March 2, 2025 called on Governors of the affected states to reconsider the directives in the interest of national uni

It, however, warned that it will not hesitate to explore legal options to press home its demand.

“Should these rights continue to be in jeopardy, we are prepared to seek restraining orders from Courts to protect the constitutional rights to education and freedom of conscience”, CAN stated .

However, in a statement on Thursday, the Director of Special Duties, Kano State Ministry of Education, Mustapha Yahya, warned all schools operating in the state to adhere strictly to  the closure directives.

According to him, all schools must close on February 28, 2025, to reopen on April 6, 2025 as contained in the earlier Government directives.

He warned of severe punishment for any institutions that flouts the closure order.

“All primary and post-primary schools in Kano State must close on Friday, February, 28, 2025, and reopen on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Schools that fail to comply with this directive will face appropriate sanctions.

This measure is to ensure improved teaching and learning while promoting balanced and sustainable growth in schools across the State”, the statement reads in part.

Alleged Reduction Of Local Government Chairmen’s Tenure, A Mistake – Abia Assembly

Hon Emma Emeruwa - Abia State House of Assembly Speaker

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The  Abia State House of Assembly has attributed the controversy surrounding the alleged plans to alter the tenure of Local Government Mayors and Councilors in the State to “a clerical error”.

The Source reports that there has been unease within the State political landscape owing to widespread speculations pointing to plans by  the Abia state Government through the legislative body to reduce the tenure of Council Chairmen from four years to two .

The alleged move, as would be expected, instantly drew the ire of the opposition with the Peoples Democratic Party PDP leading the charge.

In an open letter to Governor Alex Otti on Thursday March 6, 2025, by its chairman, Comrade Abraham Amah, the Abia PDP expressed serious concern about the alleged move to reduce the tenure of the elected council officials.

The party described the alleged plans as not only ill-advised, unconstitutional, undemocratic, but, also, a serious threat and assault on democracy and rule of law .

But reacting to the situation on Thursday, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon Austin Okezie Meregini, explained that while there is  a bill on the ground, the tenure of the elected council officials remain four years.

Rt Hon Meregini ,who is also the Chairman House Committee on Information, noted that  any reference to a two year term in the said bill may have been as a result of a clerical error.

He assured that there is no plans to reduce the four- year tenure of the current elected Council Officials .

According to him, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, is irrevocably committed to upholding integrity and consistency in the governance space of the State.

“Any one who may have come across a-two year tenure in the bill should. understand that it was a mistake.

I want to make it clear that the tenure remains four years. Governor Otti is a man of principle who does not shift the goal post midway into a match”, the Deputy Speaker noted .

According to him, the bill will be subjected to a thorough examination before being passed.

“The bill has just passed its second reading, and will proceed to the Committee stage next week where all details will be thoroughly examined.

“I have addressed this issue on multiple media platforms, and I am using this opportunity to reaffirm that once the bill is passed, the tenure will be officially set at four years and not two years”, Rt Hon Meregini noted .

Ezekwesili Slams Senate For Rejecting Natasha’s Petition

By Akinwale Kasali

The Senate has come under strong criticism from a former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, for dismissing the petition filed by the Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged during an interview with Arise TV that her troubles in the Senate began after she rejected sexual advances from Akpabio.

This was followed by a heated argument between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan on the floor of the  Senate over a change in seating arrangements.

She submitted a sexual harassment petition against Akpabio on Wednesday.

However, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions rejected the petition, citing breaches of due process and Senate rules.

In a post on her X page on Thursday, Ezekwesili said the Senate would be doing itself a disservice if it treated the allegation lightly.

She added that the petition must be openly discussed in a public hearing that the accused does not preside over.

She wrote: “Our National Assembly, which comprises the Senate and House of Representatives, belongs to the Nigerian people and not to politicians of any stripe or status,” Ezekwesili said.

“This is why the National Assembly is called a public institution. No individual or group can capture a public institution and use it for personal benefit or advantage.

“Whenever a situation like the one involving Senators Natasha Akpoti and Akpabio arises, lawmakers must understand that the Nigerian public wants transparency and full disclosure.

“Dismissing a serious accusation against the Senate President, as the senators irresponsibly did yesterday, is a democratic aberration. It cannot stand. Never.

“What happened yesterday in the Senate chamber, where a Senate President presided over a grave matter involving him, was farcical and a blot on our democracy.

“It is in the public interest that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition be urgently given the seriousness it deserves to uphold the institutional integrity of our Senate.”

During the plenary on Thursday, the Kogi lawmaker resubmitted her petition against the Senate President but was rejected.

The Senate has  suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, among other disciplinary actions for bringing the name of the Senate President into disreputable.

How Obasa’s Reinstatement as Speaker Undermined Democracy

By Maj Gen Tajudeen Olanrewaju, Rtd

The APC’s spokesperson, Oladejo, has once again taken a stand on the wrong side of justice and fairness. To my knowledge, democracy took a significant blow on March 3rd when members of the Lagos State Assembly “re-elected” the constitutionally impeached Speaker, (Mudashiru) Obasa, following the resignation of Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda from the same position she had secured with an overall majority.

If this situation represents the culmination of a geopolitical shift that has kept the ruling elites awake at night over the simple act of electing a Speaker, there are two crucial areas of concern regarding the future of Lagos State politics.

Firstly, when our Lawmakers cannot freely implement a legitimate resolution, the principles and values of governance begin to erode. Are we not witnessing the slow demise of democracy, with a blatant assault on its foundations?

The transformation of a loser into a winner based on an agreement raises questions. The election, initially celebrated with the best intentions, has failed to bring about meaningful change. Is there an ulterior motive behind this agreement? One can only speculate.

Secondly, regardless of the Lagos State APC’s assertion that Obasa’s resignation was not part of the agreement, such statements cast doubt on legitimacy and breach of trust. Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was directed to step down and return to her former position as Deputy Speaker, despite having secured majority votes as the Speaker elected by the House Plenary on January 13, 2025. The actions taken have deprived the House Members of their democratic choice, as the unfolding events suggest. conspiracy theories now hint at the influence of Abuja’s power centers in the decision-making process to resolve the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis.

Only time will reveal whether the outcome of this crisis is beneficial for the citizens of the state.

What further evidence do we need when Oladejo has stated, “To the best of my knowledge, there was no time that arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis.”

A narrative was presented to the public that Obasa would resign on March 5, 2025, when a neutral member from Lagos West would be elected to occupy the Speaker’s seat and resolve the ongoing positioning conflict.

Given the current political drama, Lagos State politics will require a new roadmap by 2027, and both indigenes and allies must rally together to reclaim power.

The ruling elites appear unwilling to involve the indigenes in the governance of the state, and the removal of Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as speaker has left a bitter taste in the mouths of the state’s indigenous citizens.

Rivers: No Federal Allocation, No Crude Oil Drilling – NDRM Warns FG

Asks non-indigenes to consider relocation from State

A militant group, the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, NDRM, on Thursday March 6, 2025, warned of an imminent shut- down of all oil exploration facilities in Rivers State.

The Group has also asked non-indigenous residents in the state to consider the option of relocating, should the current harassment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara persists.

The Group’s threat is coming against the backdrop of the series of ultimatums and veiled threats issued to Governor Fubara by the Speaker Martins Amaewfule-led State House of Assembly.

The 27 pro-Wike Lawmakers whose political fortunes were rehabilitated following Friday, February, 28, Supreme Court’s verdict that recognized them as authentic members of the House, on Monday, March 3, 2025, gave 48 hours ultimatum to the Governor to represent the 2025 appropriation bill to them as directed by the Apex Court.

In the same vein, the Legislators, again on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, ordered the Governor to submit within 48 hours, the names of all political appointees made, including Commissioners , without their approval.

The Assembly’s  combative disposition since the Supreme Court pronouncement has fueled apprehensions that impeachment moves against the Governor might be in the offing.

The Source reports that the Country’s Apex Court had, in its ruling on the Rivers state political crisis, directed that the State’s and Local Councils monthly statutory Federal Allocations be halted pending the representation of the budget estimate to the House, as well as the conduct of a fresh local Government polls.

The Court also nullified  the Council Election held on October, 5, 2024.

But in a viral video online on Thursday, NDRM said the Ijaw ethnic nationality will not sit by and watch as the Federal Government and other subterranean forces continue to humiliate, and punish Governor Fubara and innocent citizens of Rivers state .

The Group insisted that the Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders should either do the needful – de-escalate the tension in the State, or brace up for the halting of all oil exploration activities in the Niger Delta region.

According to the NDRM, there is no way Rivers will be oiling the country’s economy ,and will not get its own share of the monthly revenue.

“We, the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, wish to express our deep concern regarding the recent development in Rivers State threatening the smooth governance of our beloved state under the leadership of Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

“It has come to our attention that certain individuals proclaimed as  Lawmakers have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the State Governor to present the 2025 state budget.

“This blatant attempt to destabilize the State is not only alarming, but, also, a clear attempt to coordinate an effort to incite hell, potentially leading to a State of Emergency or even an impeachment.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to intervene immediately and put a stop to the action of the Minister, Nyesom Wike, and his associates whose intent is to drag Rivers State into an avoidable crisis. The people of Rivers state like stability, progress and conducive environment for governance.

“Furthermore, we must make it abundantly clear that the youth of Rivers state will not sit idly while our state is dragged into turmoil.

“If the Federal Allocation due Rivers State cannot be released promptly, we will have no choice but to take decisive action ,including hitting oil production”, the leader of the group stated.

The leader of the group ,who was surrounded by hordes of AK-47 riffle wielding youths in the video, vowed that all activities in the Niger Delta region, not just oil exploration, will suffer if the allocation of Rivers State is not released as at, and when due.

Continuously chanting traditional Ijaw slogans, the NDRM said it is completely unacceptable for Rivers to generate funds for the Federation Account without having her own share.

African Lessons Zelenskyy May Use in Ukraine

The live drama staged in the Oval Office on February 28 between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was such that Zelenskyy might never have rehearsed in all his former life as a comedian.

Except that it wasn’t funny. It was unprecedented. You would need to go back 64 years to find anything nearly as nasty as the Trump-Zelenskyy shouting match, with Trump’s deputy, JD Vance, enthusiastically fanning the flames.

The showdown between John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev before the Cuban Missile Crisis was hair-raising, but it wasn’t before a global audience or live TV. Everything else in between, from Richard Nixon’s spats during Watergate to Robert Mugabe’s faceoff with Magaret Thatcher over the Lancaster Agreement, has been child’s play compared with the Trump-Zelenskyy verbal brawl.

Dangerous enemy, fatal friend

There have been suggestions that Trump and Vance staged it to find an excuse to abandon Ukraine or to extract the best deal possible for the US over minerals rights in Ukraine. Whatever, it was Trump, yet again, being Trump. However, even if that were so, Zelenskyy should have been wiser than to turn a dangerous enemy into a fatal friend.

As he flits across Europe and signals a willingness for another meeting with Trump to patch things up, there are a few unfamiliar lessons he might use to save the day and spare his country from being the meatgrinder it has tragically become.

Africa’s path

Africa is an unlikely place to look because hardly any country suffered the Soviet Union-style breakup. However, the continent offers several examples of countries digging themselves out of or managing conflicts and potentially devasting wars to which their colonial histories predisposed them.

From Cameroon to Somalia and the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, several countries on the continent still struggle to find common peaceful existence against a legacy of arbitrary, self-serving partitions created by colonial rule. It’s no less a daunting existential struggle than the one currently confronting Ukraine, a smaller sovereign nation bordering a behemoth like Russia.

For example, for many years, Nigeria and Cameroon, with overlapping colonial boundaries, squabbled over the Bakassi peninsula separating them containing large oil and gas reserves. Nigerians, mainly farmers and fishermen, largely populated the area. The Cameroonian authorities claimed it was bequeathed to them by an Anglo-German treaty in the 20th century.

Beyond David vs. Goliath

The point is not the relative military strength of the combatants – whether or not it was a David vs. Goliath matchup like one between Ukraine and Russia. It’s about preventing a dangerous conflict from escalating into a killing field potentially on the scale that we have seen in Ukraine in the last nearly four years.

After decades of dispute and violent clashes between Nigeria and Cameroon, often with casualties in the border towns separating both countries, tensions began to boil over, with sections of Nigeria calling for an outright war. A war between countries would have had dire consequences for the subregion, yet some interests motivated by ego pressed Nigeria to go to war.

Warring neighbours

Nigeria took the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). When President Olusegun Obasanjo received information that it would not go well, he braced himself and rallied the public through the media to prepare for the outcome. After the ICJ ruled against Nigeria, some circles favored ignoring the court and going to war for the sake of the Nigerians rooted in Bakassi, and yes, also for the rich mineral deposits there.

To his credit, Obasanjo resisted the pressure to go to war. With a heavy heart, Nigeria cut its losses and turned the chapter on Bakassi, a strip of land which, even if it had won in a battle, might still have been lost in years of endless conflict.

Sudan, one of Africa’s most resource-rich countries, offers a different but valuable example, which litters the continent, of how winning political freedom or winning the battle may not always result in winning peace and prosperity.

Like Putin like al-Bashir?

As dictators go, there’s probably little to separate Omar al-Bashir and Russian President Vladimir Putin. But unlike al-Bashir, who only yielded to a referendum for the secession of South Sudan at gunpoint, Putin has not asked Zelenskyy to return Ukraine to the former Soviet Union – the game that the Sudanese leaders have tried to play by frustrating South Sudan’s production in the oil-rich region of Abyei. Both countries have managed a complicated and fractious co-existence, bringing relative stability to the region.

Whether in Nigeria, Sudan, or the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, Africa has had many devastating conflicts, with the situation in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo still dire.

However, compared to its history in the late 1980s and 1990s, the continent has managed relative peace despite internal incompetence and foreign instigations that might have worsened the conflicts. That is what realism teaches.

Hindsight

The Russia-Ukraine war might have been prevented if, in line with the assurances from NATO in the 1990s during talks over German reunification, the Ukrainian president had assured Putin of Ukraine’s neutrality.

That was all Putin asked for: That the US and its allies keep their pledge not to expand eastward or encircle his country. Russia’s pre-emptive seizure of Crimea made it challenging to trust Putin, but Zelenskyy played into his hands by putting all his eggs in the dubious European basket.

Zelenskyy allowed Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden and other NATO leaders in the West to deceive him into believing he would get a carte blanche in the war against Russia. Carte blanches only exist in movies.

African lessons and the Ukraine war bill

Africa’s experience teaches a different, nuanced lesson. From the betrayals of Haile Selassie during Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia to the murder of Patrice Lumumba of Congo, the continent learnt the hard way that only fools test the depth of a river with both feet. Unlike his predecessor, Viktor Yanukovych, Zelenskyy was just the fool the West needed.

What has been the cost of the war with Russia? Estimates suggest that about 400,000 Ukrainians, both soldiers and civilians, have been killed in the war, including 12,605 verified civilian deaths reported by the UN.

Also, in contrast to about 450 square kilometres of area captured by Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region, Russia controls 19 percent (or 43,749 square miles) of Ukrainian territory, roughly the size of the US state of Virginia. Yet, the future is still dire.

Something must give

Putin’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine and his smash-and-grab are just as detestable as Trump’s pettiness and flippancy. But as petty and detestable as Trump is, he was on point that it would be foolhardy to expect the current war to end without Ukraine giving up anything. Zelenskyy and his backers in Europe must agree that something has to give, and the earlier, the better.

Unlike Africa, which was partitioned by foreign conquest, Europeans have often redrawn the European map by treaty, war, or conquest. Zelenskyy and his backers may kick the can down the road, but that redrawing is about to happen again. Hopefully, Crimea and Eastern Donbas will not be to Ukraine as Alsace and Lorraine were to Germany after World War I, with severe consequences for long-term peace and stability.

The bitter truth, however, is that for this war to end, Zelenskyy must accept that Ukraine will never be the same again. This is the consequence of the comedian’s tragic act.

Insecurity In Edo Receiving Attention – Govt

0
Monday-Okpebholo

By Ayodele Oni

Edo State Government has assured that the security situation in the state is under control and that government is not overwhelmed by the situation.

Reacting to a motion in the House of Representatives on the security situation, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paul Ohonbamu, condemned the gory tale painted by the member representing Esan West, Esan Central  and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Marcus Onobun that the government is overwhelmed by the frequent killings and rising insecurity in the state.

The commissioner pointed out that “In as much as the Legislator is performing his rightful duties by drawing the attention of the Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas to the security situation in Edo State, it is not true that the state governor is overwhelmed by the situation which is receiving urgent attention by the administration.

“The security of lives and property of the people is one of the cardinal goals of the governor, who swiftly moved to ameliorate the lapses created by the past administration of former governor Godwin Obaseki with the necessary provision of the working tools for the security agencies.

“We welcome the need to intensify  intelligence gathering and surveillance operations to identify  and neutralize criminal flash points within the state, and deployment of additional security  personnel.

“There is no where in the world that the citizens are not grappling with the issue of security and a responsible government is saddled with the responsibility to ensure that the people are safe and that is exactly what Governor Okpebholo has done immediately he assumed office and he has not in any way relented.

“The government has given notice to all criminal elements within and from outside the state to leave the state as their days are numbered and there have been several arrests and investigations going on.

“There is no doubt that the man hunt for the criminals will obviously take some time to be able to get rid of all the criminals from the state,  therefore, there will be need to exercise some patience with the security agencies, as they do their jobs, but the good news is that there are positive results.

“As the onslaught by the security agencies  against  criminals spread across the state, no where will be comfortable for them and the state will not be a safe haven for kidnappings  and violent attacks.

“The State Governor, who signed into law the 2025 amended  laws prohibiting kidnapping  and related activities, has launched  a crackdown on kidnapping by demolishing buildings used by kidnappers and their accomplices, in Uromi and Ekpoma thereby sending a strong message to perpetrators.

“With this development and more, Landlords have been advised to properly profile their  tenants before renting out properties because any house found to be used for kidnapping activities or any related criminal activities will be demolished  to serve as a deterrent to others.

“There are other moves embarked by the state government in collaboration with the security agencies to flush out all criminal elements to make the state  habitable for all and there are records of successes in the fight against criminal  activities.

“There have  also been aggressive  raiding  of hideouts  and apprehending of suspects for interrogation in the state and as such the state government is not overwhelmed with the security situation.”
