The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is tracking some passengers that boarded a plane with a medical doctor from the United Kingdom. The Doctor, on return,  later died of  Lassa fever.

NCDC has confirmed that   31-year-old doctor died of  Lassa fever.

In a public advisory issued on Monday, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris said the doctor, who worked at a private health facility in Ondo State, had recently traveled to the United Kingdom, (UK) and returned home before succumbing to the illness.

‘’The patient departed Nigeria 19/02/2025 and returned 27/02/2025. Samples were taken late on Friday, 28/02/2025 on a suspicion of Lassa fever, but the patient unfortunately passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 01/03/2025.

“The laboratory investigation returned result was Lassa Fever positive on PCR on Tuesday 04/03/2025. The patient was said to have visited his fiancée in Edo state, as well as family and friends before travelling.”

Dr Idris stated that authorities are now tracking people who were in contact with him, including passengers on his flight, in order to prevent further spread of the disease.

Providing the latest statistics on Lassa Fever, the NCDC Director-General, reports that 535 cases of Lassa fever have been confirmed out of 2,728 suspected cases this year, resulting in 98 deaths.

Most cases are found in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi states.

Dr. Idris advises the public to keep the environment clean, store food in sealed containers, cover dustbins, and block holes in their house to prevent rats from entering.

He also emphasized that people should avoid drying food in open spaces where rats can contaminate it, wash their hands regularly and keep good hygiene to help reduce the risk.

The NCDC officer urged those who experience symptoms such as fever, sore throat, or unusual bleeding to seek medical attention immediately, instead of self-medicating.

“Suspected cases should be reported via the NCDC toll-free number (6232) or the state health hotline.”

Dr Idris also reminded healthcare workers to follow safety protocols to prevent infections,  warning citizens about the dangers of living in rat-infested areas or handling food carelessly.

Lassa fever, caused by the Lassa virus, spreads through contact with infected rats or through body fluids of infected individuals.

Early detection and treatment significantly improve survival rates, even though initial symptoms may mimic malaria.

Finally, El Rufai Dumps APC For SDP

Malam Nasir El-Rufai

The immediate past Governor of Kaduna state , Nasir El Rufai has resigned from the All  Progressives Congress, APC., the party under which he served as a two time governor.

The former Minister of the FCT has now joined the Social Democratic Party, SDP, months after analysts contended that his political future in the ruling party was no longer guaranteed.

Indication that the governor governor was considering leaving the party came recently after he decalred that he no longer believe in his former party.

He has been in a feud with the APC for  months after he failed to push through the Senate screening for minister. He recently blamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the set back, saying the president could have fought hard for him, to ensure that he scaled the hurdle of ministerial screening after the Nigerian Senate rejected his nomination.

The former minister, the magazine reported had recently been hobnobbing with the opposition leaders, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, whom he met just hours before he dumped the APC.

Sources informed the magazine that opposition leaders in the country are planning to form a coalition to oust the ruling APC and President Tinubu from power in 2027. “The SDP ‘may just be the rainbow party for all of them, to achieve this onerous task” a source said on Monday after reports of El Rufai’s defection broke.

Fmr. Gov. Ada-George  Sues For Peace, As Anxiety Heightens In Rivers State

Chief Rufus Ada-George

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst the ongoing political tension  occasioned by the  February 28, 2025, Supreme court judgement on the festering crisis rocking Rivers State, a former Governor of the State, Chief Rufus Ada-George, has sued for restraint from all parties.

At an interactive session with the Media on Monday, March, 10, 2025, Chief George, who was Governor on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention, NRC, in 1991, cautioned against the issuance of ultimatums, threats and incendiary remarks.

The Source reports that unease and heightened apprehension have engulfed the Rivers State political landscape following the  Supreme Court’s verdict  conferring legitimacy on the faction of the state House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewfule.

The Court, besides nullifying the October 5, 2024 Local Council Polls held in the State, also halted further remittance of Federal Allocations both to the State and Local Governments

While the State Government will have its funds restored after the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the House presided over by Rt Hon Amaewfule, the Local Councils will start to receive theirs  after the conduct of another Council Election.

The political temperature of the State has considerably boiled over amidst series of ultimatums from the Amaewfule- led state House of Assembly to both the Governor, his Commissioners, other political appointees, as well as the Chairman and Members of the State Independent Electoral Commission.

In return, perceived inflammatory and incendiary statements and open threats of hell on earth and the disruption of oil exploration activities have continued to emanate from the camp of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s sympathisers and fellow Ijaw citizens.

However, former Governor Ada-George appealed to all the warring factions to place the overall interests of Rivers State above all other considerations .

He specifically urged political actors in the ongoing crisis to refrain from any acts capable of further inflaming passions and disagreements.

“Although, the Supreme Court has rendered its verdict, there is still room for humane and pragmatic decisions that can help mitigate the adverse effects of the ruling on the people .

“Political disagreements of this kind in the State, if not properly handled, could spiral out of control with far reaching consequences.

“An example was the 1962 Western Regional crisis. So there is the urgent need for all parties to explore peaceful options through negotiations.

“Even in war-torn countries and regions, negotiations still remain veritable options, and vital tool for peace building”, chief Ada George stated.

The former Governor and Elder Statesman, also, called on his colleagues in the service of Rivers State – former Governors, their Deputies ,past Legislators, both State and Federal to join hands in finding a lasting solution to the festering crisis.

Particularly, Chief Ada-George appealed to the State Lawmakers to eschew a resort to aggression, and avoid the pursuit of personal interests in the performance of their functions.

He expressed the optimism that there will be light once more at the end of the dark period.

” As the oldest Civilian Governor of Rivers state, I remain optimistic about our future. Let us embrace compromise, unity and peace as we chart a new course for our dear State”, Ada-George appealed.

Police Invade Abductors Camps In Akwa Ibom

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Muhammed Azare, has warned kidnappers and other criminal elements to steer clear of the State or face dire consequences.

One of the arrested hoodlums, however, died at a medical facility, where they were being treated for injuries sustained during a grueling gun battle with Operatives.

In IBB’s 400+ Page Book, Our Father’s Picture Was Not Included” – Abacha Family

Sani Abacha
Late Sani Abacha

The Family of Late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has pointed out that in the over 400-page autobiography of Miliary President, General Ibrahim Babangida, *A Journey In Service*, which was presented on Thursday February 20, there was nowhere Abacha’s photograph featured.

This was revealed in the Family’s comprehensive response to Babangida’s claim that far from the belief of Nigerians that he was behind the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, the culprit was General Abacha.

In the Family’s strongly worded statement, it was pointed out that not only was Babangida fully responsible for the annulment, he failed to make history by not telling any truth in all of his narratives.

The Abacha Family pointed out that it does seem  that the main purpose of the book “was driven by lingering ill feelings towards  General Sani Abacha”

Proof: “Despite spanning over 400 pages, it does not contain a single picture of General Abacha – the same person General Babangida acknowledged as having saved his life and remained his ally, friend and colleague for over 30 years.”

Following the full text of the Abacha Family response.

“Our attention has been drawn to recent claims made by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, in his newly launched book , A Journey in Service, where he alleged that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election was the responsibility of the late General Sani Abacha. These claims have sparked widespread controversy and necessitate a clear response from the immediate family of General Sani Abacha and the entire Abacha clan in the interest of historical accuracy and justice.

” It is important to state unequivocally that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time the June 12 election was annulled. The decision to annul the election was made under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who, as the then Head of State, held absolute executive powers and was solely responsible for the actions of his government. Any attempt to shift this blame onto General Sani Abacha, who was a very senior military officer within the regime, is a deliberate distortion of historical facts.

Ibrahim Babangida - IBB
Ibrahim Babangida.

“For years, various actors have attempted to rewrite the history of that critical period in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. However, the facts remain unchanged. We urge Nigerians to be wary of revisionist narratives that seek to manipulate public perception for personal or political reasons. The memory of our late father and leader, General Sani Abacha, must not be tarnished by baseless accusations meant to absolve those who were truly responsible.

“Furthermore, we wish to emphasize that despite this unfortunate attempt to shift blame, General Sani Abacha remained a true and loyal friend to General Ibrahim Babangida up to the time of his death. He was a man of unwavering commitment to his comrades. We also find it necessary to state that at the time General Babangida’s life was under threat, it was General Abacha who came to his rescue, ensuring his safety.

“We are also of the opinion that the book was written in bad faith. Ab initio, it appears to be driven by lingering ill feelings towards General Sani Abacha. Despite spanning over 400 pages, it does not contain a single picture of General Abacha—the same person General Babangida acknowledged as having saved his life and remained his ally, friend, and colleague for over 30 years. This is further underscored by the fact that no invitation was extended to the Abacha family for the book launch.

“It is clear that these bad feelings have weighed on him for years. We can only hope that after keeping them bottled up for so long, he has now found peace within himself.

“We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to the many Nigerians who have risen in defense of General Sani Abacha in an effort to set the record straight. Your unwavering commitment to truth and historical accuracy is deeply appreciated, and we acknowledge the outpouring of support from those who refuse to allow history to be distorted.

“While we recognize that history will continue to be debated, we believe that honesty and integrity must guide such discussions. We also call on all well-meaning Nigerians and historians to remain committed to the truth and reject any attempt to misrepresent the past for personal gain. Worthy of note also is the fact that it is tantamount to the celebration of deceit to gloss over the numerous achievements and contributions of late General Abacha to the overall development of Nigeria. No amount of lies and quantum of misinformation would erase the historical records that dot the length and breadth of this country, keeping the Abacha legacy of service delivery as a model.

“We do know for a fact that if General Abacha were alive, these accusations—deficient in truth and sincerity—would never have been mentioned. As the Hausa saying goes, Kura ma ta san gidan mai babban sanda (Even the hyena knows the house of the man who wields the big stick).

“As we reflect on Nigeria’s history, we acknowledge General Sani Abacha’s time in leadership and the role he played in the nation’s development. His contributions, like those of past leaders, remain part of our country’s history. We believe that history is best judged with fairness and objectivity.

“We regret that *A Journey in Service* missed the opportunity and failed to make history as a truthful and objective account of past events. As one public commentator aptly put it, honesty, sincerity, and integrity are virtues not commonly associated with the author.

2027: “Tinubu Has Won Already” – Keyamo

0
Festus Keyamo and Bola Tinubu

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, says the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 is a done deal.

“The President has won 2027 already,” he declared.

The minister made the remark on Sunday at a reception in Ugheli, Delta state to welcome Great Ogboru into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Keyamo’s comment however comes amid the groundswell of opposition to Tinubu’s plan to return to power in the next presidential election.

Key opposition leaders in the country, including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi of Labour Party, Musa Kwakwanso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP,  among others are currently in talks to form a coalition to oust the APC from power come 2027.

The three politicians contested the 2023 presidential election but lost to the incumbent, who the magazine learned is eyeing a second term in office, even though he’s yet to categorically declared his interest.

Keyamo said Delta, currently under the PDP will fall to APC in 2027 as there are ongoing reconciliation efforts to bring aggrieved members of the party together to strengthen the party’s base ahead the election, saying the party lost the last governorship election due to the division within.

With people like Ogboru who“ has been able to sustain his sprawling political base for ages, even without federal power,” the coast seems clear for the party to claim the state, he said, describing Ogboru as a great leader with massive grassroots support in the state.

According to him, “PDP will fall in Delta in the next political dispensation. The President has won 2027 already.

“Here in Delta State, we lost 2023 simply because many stakeholders left APC in anger.

“But presently, we look forward to the future with much more certainty because the Olorogun Otega Emerhor-led reconciliation committee, together with the college of leaders, have worked very well in restoring unity to the Delta APC.”

Ogboru is a serial governorship candidate in the state.

Lagos Tackles NAF Over Attack On IKEDC, Set Up Probe

0
Chief of air Staff Abubakar

The Babajied Sanwo-olu’s administration in Lagos state has revealed it plans to probe the recent attack on the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC, by men of the Nigerian Airforce, NAF.

The state government made the revelation few days after the incident happened, and following trenchant criticisms from not a few Nigerians who described the behavior of military men to be totally  unacceptable.

The magazine reported that the military men had last week attacked the IKEDC office in Lagos, injuring some employees and leaving in the wake of the attack destroyed property and equipment belonging to the electricity  distribution company.

The attack was allegedly carried out in response to the disconnection of electricity supply to the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base due to accumulated debts.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Airforce said it has already instituted a probe to get to the root of the unruly behaviors of its men involved in the attack, but this appears not to be enough for the state government which said it will conduct its own investigations to ensure that those affected received justice in line with the law.

The state government said nobody would be allowed to resort to self help, saying that there are better ways within  the law to resolve conflicts.

The state Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, reinforced the state government position at the week end when he paid a visit to the company.

According to him, the state government priotise the welfare of the citizens, including those working in IKEDC, and will do all within the law to ensure that residents live in a safe environment.

Atiku Speaks On His Future In PDP

0
Atiku Abubakar

Amid speculations over his future in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports that he has left the party, describing such reports as false.

The PDP 2023 Presidential candidate made his position known in a statement issued by media office at the weekend, dismissing rumours that he has defected to another party, following reports he’s joined a coalition of other prominent politicians in the country planning to oust the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, from power in the next general election.

According to the former PDP presidential candidate, he and other key political leaders in the country are working together ahead the 2027 elections, but he  still remains a bonafide member of the party.

The former vice president remark comes few days after one of his allies, Jide Jandol, the party’s 2023 Governorship candidate in Lagos state, left the party contending that the party is not ready to take power in the state.

Jandol has yet to announce his new party, but not a few political pundits insist that his departure from the PDP is a signal that Abubukar allies are departing the party in preparation for him to leave, due to what some analysts described as his ‘unhappiness’ in the party, which may encourage him to reconsider his future in  the top opposition party in the country.

But alas, Abubakar denied any plan to dump the party, under which he had contested several elections and rose to the position of number two citizen in the country in 1999.

He urged those “peddling unverified information” that he has left the PDP to desist because he has no plans to abandon the party.

“We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic,” he said.

Stressing that, “Hence, it is fallacious and unfounded to allege that the Waziri is jumping the PDP ship. Such an allegation is antithetical to the objective of the grand coalition, which the former Vice President is currently driving alongside other prominent political leaders in the country.

“We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bonafide member of the PDP, the main opposition party.

“The defection claims are an attempt to confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition that is at work to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC.”

Abubakar was among the founding fathers of the PDP, the party on which crest he rose to the position of Nigeria’s vice president in 1999 under the Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. He however faced serious setbacks in his quest to become Nigeria’s president under the PDP.

Saraki Warns Akpabio:  “Don’t Politicise, Or Trivialise The Allegations Against You”

0
Bukola Saraki and Godswill Akpabio

By Adesina Soyooye

A former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has warned Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, of the dangers in joking with the serious allegation of se3ual harassment leveled against him, or play politics with it.

A serving Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, had publicly, on an international television, accused Akpabio  of mistreating her because she refused to give in to his se3ual desires. However, the Senate has, so far, refused to investigate the allegation, and instead, rejected Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition, with Akpabio, the accused, presiding.

Saraki, in a statement from his Media Office signed  by his Special Adviser on Media, Yusuph Olayinonu, lashed at Akpabio  for trying to politicise and trivialise calls on him by Nigerians to subject himself to a transparent investigation into the serious allegations leveled against him by  Akpoti-Uduaghan. Saraki had, earlier, called for a transparent investigation into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio.

In response, Akpabio had, ridiculously, claimed  that the calls for a transparent investigation were meant to remove a Niger Delta politician from office.

On Sunday, Saraki fired back in a strongly worded statement signed by Olaniyonu. The statement reads:

“The attention of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office has been drawn to the statement made by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, while addressing the leaders of some “youth ethnic groups” on Friday that certain individuals from Kwara and Adamawa States want him removed because he is from the Niger Delta region,

“Ordinarily, Dr. Saraki would have ignored the statement as a sign of the times in which we now live.

“However, its underlying motive of politicising and trivialising a serious issue that threatens the integrity, credibility, and importance of the legislature is the reason why we think we should not allow the Senate President to create a misleading impression of the issue at stake in the all-important institution that the National Assembly represents in our democracy.”

Dr Saraki emphasized that at no time did he call for the resignation of Akpabio. He said he only urged the Senate President to ensure that the allegations related to sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office are investigated.

He referred Akpabio to read his press statement dated March 1, 2025, very well to confirm there was nowhere he suggested Akpabio’s resignation as the Senate President.

“Dr. Saraki, in his last comment on the Akpabio-Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan crisis, never called on the Senate President to resign or step aside. Rather, he urged the Senate President to be conscious of the fact that perception is reality and, therefore, he should avoid treating the allegations by the Senator in a manner that will create the perception that the Senate, as an institution, is trying to cover up issues bothering on sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office.

“Also, Dr. Saraki made it clear that his intervention was neither about Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan nor whether her claim was right or not. He stated that since the Senator has gone public with such serious allegations against the presiding officer, the image of the institution should be saved through an honest, sincere, open, transparent, and unbiased investigation.”

The issue, Saraki warned “is definitely not one in which Akpabio should exploit ethnic sentiments, political division, or regional proclivity. This will neither be in his own interest nor that of the institution over which he is presiding. He should face the reality on the ground and do what is right.

“Saraki  believes that when a sensitive matter suggesting sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and mistreatment of women comes up anywhere, it evokes the pains that thousands of women across the nooks and crannies of our society experience daily.

“Thus, when it is raised in a place like the legislative institution, it is an opportunity for us to handle it with utmost openness and transparency to ensure that justice is not only done but glaringly seen to be done.

“Once again, Dr. Saraki stands by, and maintains his earlier suggestion to Akpabio and the Senate leadership on the allegations raised by the Senator from Kogi State. An open, transparent, and honest investigation of the allegations is still needed to ensure that the Senate is not cast in the image of an institution that is tolerant of sexual harassment, gender bias, victimisation and mistreatment of women, abuse of office, and the enthronement of the culture of silence. By having such an investigation, the general public and the international community will have more confidence in our legislative institution”, the statement emphasized.

The Senate has since suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for a period of six months. In defence of its action which has been roundly condemned by not a few outraged Nigerians and Groups, the Senate said Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended not because of the se3ual harrassment allegation she leveled against Senate President Akpabio, but because of “misconduct.”

Rivers Lawmakers Likely To Ignore Gov. Fubara’s Invitation

0
Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Speaker Martin Amaewhule

By Adesina Soyooye

The glimmer of hope that, perhaps, there could be an end to the political crisis which has been the portion of Rivers State has been shattered. This is because unless there is a last  minute change of heart, the meeting which Governor Siminalayi Fubara scheduled between him and the Members of the House of Assembly, is not likely to be honoured by them.

This snub which is likely  to deepen the crisis in the State was disclosed by a Member of the House of Assembly, Lolo Isaiah Opunede. According to him, for the House Members, the meeting with the Governor is a no-no. The Governor should “dey his dey” while they equally do the same.

Fubara and his predecessor and estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike, Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have been in a very bitter political disagreement. The disagreement extended to the House of Assembly where 27 of the members are “Wike’s boys”. Since the crisis started in 2023,a couple of months after Fubara was sworn-in as Governor, the State has been grounded to a halt, almost. It has been one legal tussle after the order, claims and counter-claims.

But on Friday, February 28, 2025, in a decisive judgement which shocked not a few people, the Supreme Court gave the Governor a bloody nose. In a unanimous judgement, a panel of their Lordships decided all issues in favour of the pro-Wike members who most people thought had lost their seats when they publicly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, an action which they shockingly turned round to deny they took.

Since after the Supreme Court declared them “still PDP members”, and authentic Members of the House with Martin Amaewhule as the authentic  Speaker, the members have been throwing their powers around with a couple of 48-hour ultimatums given to the Governor. So far, Fubara has ignored the ultimatums one of which was to re-present the 2025 Budget as ordered by the Supreme Court. Before now, he had signed it into law after it was approved for him by four members of the Assembly loyal to him.

His reason was that aside from the fact, at the time, that his Government had not seen a copy of the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement, he had received no letter from the Speaker on the re-presentation of the budget.

However, hope of a little understanding was raised on Sunday when the Governor invited Speaker Amaewhule and his colleagues to a meeting with him on Monday, March 10, in his office at Government House. Among other things billed for discussion, according to the letter addressed to the Speaker are: Getting an appropriate venue for the Assembly Members to carry out their business (Fubara had pulled down the Assembly Complex in the heat of the crisis, allegedly, for comprehensive repairs); to discuss how to pay them their many months of outstanding salaries and allowances which had been withheld in the heat of the crisis; and to agree on when to re-present the 2025 Budget.

But Honourable Opunede, representing Akuku-Toru Constituency 2, has said there will be no such meeting. He dismissed the invitation from the Governor for a crucial meeting as a no event.

Opunede, in an online video told Governor Fubara to “dey his dey” (stay on your own) while the Assembly members do the same.

He insisted that given the mode of the transmission of the invitation, it will not be possible for them to honour it.

Opunede: “How can you write a letter for the House of Assembly and put it on Social Media and expect us to come. The Governor should write us the proper way.”

There are rumours that the Members are bent on humiliating the Governor, and, as an icing on the cake, impeach him. But there are also strong speculations that a number of the Assembly Members of Ijaw extraction are no longer anxious to impeach the Governor. They are urging for a meeting ground foe the progress of the State.
