Nnamdi Kanu: Senator Abaribe Denies Disrupting Senate Proceedings Over His Non Release

0

By Charles Igbo

Ranking Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe has distanced himself from a weird story which made rounds Friday that he disrupted Senate proceedings to protest the non-release, till date, of detained Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The viral story said that Abaribe, APGA, Abia South Senatorial Zone, stormed the Senate complex,  a placard in hand, blocked the entrance to the Chambers, and swore he was not going to make way, or allow Senate proceedings until detained Kanu is released.

A simple interrogation of the story gave it out as fake, but the masses already believed it and Abaribe thought it wise to issue a statement which dismissed the story as utter rubbish and a lie from the pit of hell.

A statement signed by his Media Aide, Uchenna Awom, disclosed that not only was Abaribe not in Abuja on Friday, the Senate does not seat on Fridays, and Kanu’s case is sub judice.

The Senator said that the motive of whoever fabricated and planted the story on Social Media handles was to destroy to quiet, underground moves aimed at finding an amicable solution to the Kanu issue.

Following is the full text of Abaribe’s statement dated 14, March, 2025.

“DISCARD AS FALSE REPORT OF SENATOR ABARIBE DISRUPTING SENATE PLENARY FOR KANU

“The office of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has been drawn to a false and very misleading report purporting disruption of Senate Plenary by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“The report is false and was at best a concoction that defies logic.

“It was a deliberate misinformation that tends to narrate a sinister motive aimed at sabotaging the ongoing effort at exploring political solution to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“For the avoidance of  doubt, Distinguished Senator Abaribe was last seen on the Senate floor last Wednesday and travelled out of Abuja on Thursday for an oversight function in Ikwuano Umuahia, Abia State, organised by the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

“In any case, the Senate does not sit on Fridays – It  conducts its plenary sessions from Tuesdays to Thursdays, making the claim of a shutdown on a Friday baseless.

“2. Matters that are sub judice (under judicial consideration) are not debated in the Senate – The case of Nnamdi Kanu is currently before the courts, and as a rule, the National Assembly does not interfere in judicial proceedings.

“Therefore, Senator Abaribe couldn’t have embarked on such effort knowing it’s futility.

“The truth is that Distinguished Senator Enyi Abaribe did not lead any protest or obstructed legislative proceedings.

“The  public is, therefore, urged to disregard this fabricated report and refrain from sharing unverified information.”

For the records, when Kanu was first arrested and hauled before a Federal High Court and detained for months, it was Abaribe who took him on bail.

Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyele

By Ayodele Oni

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, has charged Military Commands in the South West to brace up, as criminal elements surge to the region.

The Army Chief, who  paid a working visit to officers and men of the 32 Artillery Brigade at Owena Cantonment, Akure, lauded efforts by the soldiers in addressing security challenges.

“You are all doing well. Collectively, we are securing Nigeria together, and I say well done.

“As we continue tackling crime, we have observed that some criminals are moving towards the Southwest.

“We must not allow a replication of the insecurity seen in the North and other regions. Brace up for this challenge, develop the right attitude, and do your job well.

“My command philosophy is simple; soldiers come first. In everything, the welfare of soldiers must take precedence.

“Keep that in mind, and if you understand who you are, you’ll know that this is the way to go.”

Acknowledging the security challenges facing the country, the COAS emphasised the critical role of the military and other security agencies in safeguarding Nigeria.

“We are doing our best alongside other security agencies. But I want to remind you this afternoon that the entire Nigerian state and its people are counting on you to confront these challenges.

“Security is the foundation of development, and without it, progress is impossible. Whether we like it or not, insecurity affects all of us.”

He also highlighted the government’s financial commitment to security, stressing the need for optimal utilisation of resources.

“The government is spending huge sums on security.

“If we can secure Nigeria better, those resources can be redirected towards improving the lives of all Nigerians. That is why I am asking you to do even more.”

The COAS reassured the troops of ongoing efforts to improve their welfare and that of their families.

“We are making preparations to ensure that you and your families have a good place to stay. I have already told you this will be done, and we will remain focused on delivering on that promise.”

Reiterating the expectations placed on the army, General Oluyede urged the troops to double their efforts.

“Nigerians are looking up to us. This means you must be ready to work harder.

“Yesterday, at the division headquarters, I was briefed that at least 100,000 new uniforms will be produced every month.

“The first batch will be distributed between 81 Division and 2nd Division starting tomorrow. If it does not begin as planned, let me know.”

The COAS further reminded the troops of their responsibilities, urging them to uphold professionalism and discipline.

“When you are sent out on operations, carry out your duties diligently and responsibly.

“Follow the guidance of experienced senior officers. I can assure you, doing so will make a difference in your career.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and it is our collective responsibility to make it safer and better for future generations.

“As your leader, alongside my team, I will do my best to support you, but you must also be ready to do your part.

“This is a covenant between us. I will lead you well and provide for you, but you must be committed to your duty.”

Nigeria Faults US Congress, Insists Christians Not Persecuted

The Federal Government has faulted a  United States of America’s Congress Report which indicted Nigeria for persecution of Nigeria’s Christians.

In a statement on his X handle, Daniel Bwala, a Christian, and Special Adviser to  President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy,    faulted the reports that Christians in Nigeria are being persecuted.

Disputing the contents of the report, Bwala emphasised that the Government of Bola Tinubu

Bwala is committed, and remains committed to promoting peace and religious tolerance.

The Federal Government’s response came after the US House Foreign Affairs Sub Committee approved sanctions against Nigeria over it called “widespread killing of Christians and religious violence’’.

Based on tha report, yhe Committee asked President Donald Trump  to impose stringent sanctions on Nigeria in response to widespread killing of Christians in the country.

This decision followed a congressional hearing on Wednesday where lawmakers condemned the Nigeria for failing to protect Christian communities from widespread violence.

But in response, Bwala, faulted the  Committee’s report and said it fell short of context and timelines.

Bwala: “The administration of @officialABAT President Bola Tinubu promotes religious tolerance. Since May 29th 2023, when President Tinubu assumed the office as president, there have been little or no case at all of persecution of Christians anywhere in the country.

“Secondly, while we are in no way admitting or authenticating the report of the US foreign relations committee, it is noteworthy to state that the committee’s report falls short of context and timelines.

“President Bola Tinubu remains committed to promoting peace and religious tolerance.”

For the records, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is a Christian and an ordained Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG.

Ending The Economic Marginalization of South-East: A Call for Federal-Regional Collaboration

The South-East of Nigeria, renowned for its entrepreneurial dynamism and industrial ingenuity, continues to suffer from systemic economic marginalization. Despite the resilience of its people, the region remains plagued by infrastructural neglect, political underrepresentation, and insufficient federal investment—all of which have stifled its full economic potential.

This persistent marginalization is not accidental. It is rooted in decades of post-war economic exclusion, disproportionate fiscal allocations, and the deliberate omission of the region from key national projects. The question that begs for urgent answers is: how long will this be allowed to continue?

While the South-East has thrived largely through private enterprise, its economic growth cannot be sustained without a structured and institutional approach. To address these challenges holistically, it is imperative that the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and the South-East Governors’ Forum (SEGF) work collaboratively with the Federal Government of Nigeria to reverse the economic injustices that have held the region back.

A Legacy of Marginalization

The economic decline of the South-East can be traced to the post-civil war era. The infamous 20 Pounds Policy, which confiscated the savings of war survivors, ensured that the region started its economic recovery from ground zero. The exclusion of Igbo professionals and entrepreneurs from national economic policy-making further weakened their economic prospects.

Decades later, the consequences of this marginalization remain visible. The South-East has the least number of states (five) among Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, limiting its share of federal allocations and representation in decision-making. Furthermore, major federal industries, oil refineries, steel plants, and seaports were deliberately sited outside the region, even when it had the capacity to sustain such economic hubs.

Infrastructure Deficits and Industrial Limitations

Infrastructure is a key driver of economic growth, but in the South-East, it remains grossly inadequate. Key roads such as the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and the Onitsha-Owerri Road have remained in deplorable conditions for years, making transportation of goods and services a nightmare. The absence of a deep-sea port has forced South-East traders—who dominate Nigeria’s import and export business—to rely on ports in Lagos and Port Harcourt, increasing costs and logistical difficulties.

Similarly, the lack of a viable rail network has placed an additional burden on businesses, while erratic electricity supply continues to cripple industries in Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha. The ingenuity of the people alone cannot substitute for the basic infrastructure needed for economic expansion.

The Role of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and the South-East Governors’ Forum (SEGF)

The South-East Development Commission (SEDC) was created to address these infrastructural and economic challenges, similar to how the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was set up to develop the oil-rich Niger Delta. However, for the SEDC to succeed, it must be empowered with sufficient funding, transparency, and a well-defined mandate to oversee economic revitalization in the region.

On the other hand, the South-East Governors’ Forum (SEGF) must move beyond rhetoric and present a unified economic roadmap that prioritizes:

  • A regional industrialization master plan that integrates Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha into a mega-production hub.
  • Security reforms that will curb the rising instability in the region and restore investor confidence.
  • Collaborations with international investors and the Igbo diaspora to drive industrial investments.
  • Pressure on the Federal Government to implement infrastructural projects in the region.

The Federal Government’s Responsibility

While regional collaboration is essential, the primary responsibility for ending economic marginalization rests on the Federal Government. Nigeria cannot achieve inclusive national development while keeping one of its most industrious regions on the margins.

The Federal Government must therefore take the following urgent steps:

  1. Establish a deep-sea port in the South-East to enhance trade and reduce business costs.
  2. Revamp road and rail networks linking the South-East to other regions to ease the transportation of goods.
  3. Increase federal budgetary allocations to the region to correct the decades of infrastructural neglect.
  4. Ensure fair representation in national appointments so that South-East voices are heard in economic policymaking.
  5. Support indigenous industrialization initiatives by providing incentives for manufacturing, particularly in Aba, Nnewi, and Onitsha.

Security and Stability as Economic Priorities

No economic plan can succeed in an environment of insecurity and instability. The rise in violent agitations, unknown gunmen attacks, and sit-at-home protests has worsened the economic hardship in the South-East. Many businesses have shut down, and investor confidence is declining.

The solution lies in a balanced security approach that combines intelligence-based policing, economic empowerment programs, and genuine engagement with regional stakeholders. An approach that relies solely on military force will only escalate tensions and further cripple economic activities.

A Call for Action

The economic marginalization of the South-East is a reality that can no longer be ignored. This is not just about fairness or justice; it is about Nigeria’s economic future. A country that stifles the potential of one of its most productive regions is ultimately harming itself.

If the Federal Government is serious about building a strong, diversified economy, then it must integrate the South-East into its national economic strategy. If the SEDC and SEGF are serious about championing the interests of the region, then they must work collaboratively with the Federal Government to demand and implement sustainable economic policies.

The time for talk is over. What the South-East needs is action.

Anambra Bans Use Of Mobile Phones In Public Schools

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Anambra State Government, on Friday, March,14 ,2025, announced the prohibition of the use of mobile phone in all  Secondary schools in the State.

Consequently, all Heads of Schools ,and Principals have been directed to seize  mobile phones seen with  the pupils and students within the school premises.

The Chairman of the Anambra state Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Nkechi Ikediugwu, who issued the directive at the occasion of the State’s Cultural Day celebration held in Awka the capital, explained that the measure is to enthrone sanity in the system.

According to her, the State Government is highly desirous of curbing distractions, as well as improve academic performance in the education sector.

The increasing use of mobile phones, particularly among the underaged, according to Mrs Ikediugwu, has greatly impacted negatively on the concentration and performance levels of the students in recent times .

“The increasing use of mobile phones by students during school hours has become a serious distraction to their studies .

“I am authorizing Principals and Teachers to seize phones from students who come to school with them so that we can ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without the interference of phones.

“Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is making significant investment in education to promote academic excellence and instill discipline in students”,she noted.

Earlier at the occasion, Ikediugwu called for concerted efforts aimed at preserving and promoting Igbo Cultural heritage through the instrumentality of education.

She emphasized the imperativeness of the conceptualization and implementation of  a practical framework for the inculcation of Igbo culture and norms in the  students.

Appeal Court Sacks Sanusi As Emir Of Kano, Faults His Reinstatement

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

By Akinwale Kasali

Emir of Kano, Sanusi Muhammadu Sanusi II has been sacked by  the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The Court, also,  has halted his reinstatement as the Emir of Kano.

Justice Okon Abang led a Three-member Panel who unanimously halted the implementation of the January 10, 2025 judgment, which vacated the nullification of Sanusi II’s appointment by a Kano State High Court, which it held was done without jurisdiction.

The judgment, which was delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, held that the nullification of Sanusi II’s appointment was done without the required jurisdiction and ordered the transfer of the suit to the Kano State High Court.

However, ruling on the fresh applications with numbers CA/KN/27M/2025 and CA/KN/28M/2025, the appellate court agreed that the applications seeking to halt the enforcement of the earlier judgment pending the appeal before the Supreme Court were competent and meritorious.

According to Justice Abang, “The law is settled. The Court is enjoined to exercise its discretion judiciously and in the interest of justice”

The Judge further noted that the subject matter before the Court needs to be preserved because the applicant had served as Emir for five years before his removal, adding that he deserved the right to protection.

It would be recalled that Justice Kolawole had  vacated the order against Sanusi II’s appointment, held that the matter, being a chieftaincy dispute, ought to have been determined by the High Court of Kano State rather than the Federal High Court, which he described as “a grave error”.

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided by Justice Abubakar Liman, had on June 20, 2024, nullified the Kano State Government’s Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir.

In the fundamental rights enforcement suit by Aminu Baba-Dan’Agundi, the presiding judge further directed parties, including the Kano State House of Assembly, to maintain the status quo during the reign of Emir Ado Bayero.

Rivers Budget: Again, Lawmakers  Shun Fubara, Proceed On  Indefinite Break

0
Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Speaker Martin Amaewhule

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe that the interests of the State and our people should take priority over political conflicts” – Fubara, in letter to Lawmakers

The Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday  March 14, 2025, proceeded on an indefinite recess.

The decision of the Legislative Body to adjourn proceedings is coming just as Governor Siminalayi Fubara wrote  to request for a date for  the re-presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The Source reports that the Supreme Court had in its verdict in the Rivers State consolidated cases, on February 28, 2025, ordered the stoppage of the State’s Federal Allocation pending when the budget will be represented to the whole House including the 27 pro-Wike Lawmakers who had earlier defected from their party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

An attempt by the Governor to re-present the budget estimate on on Wednesday, March 12, was aborted owing to the Lawmakers’ refusal to receive him at their Legislative quarters.

The Governor was  locked out at the entrance to the Assembly quarters.

However, the legislators said they never gave their consent for the Governor to come on the day he did.

While acknowledging the Governor’s letter requesting to re-present the budget ,the House insisted that the Governor ought to have waited for a response before coming.

Similarly, the political godfather of the Martin Amaewfule-led House of Assembly, Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, berated the Governor for coming to  the Legislative quarters without invitation.

Wike the immediate past Governor of Rivers State accused Governor Fubara of only playing to the gallery by coming to the House without first getting a response to his letter of request.

However, despite the humiliation, the Governor on Friday, sent in a second letter to the legislators, expressing his intention to represent the appropriation bill next week Wednesday, March 19, 2025, or any other date deemed convenient by the House .

The Governor explained that the quest to represent the budget estimate is in compliance  with the Supreme Court’s judgment of February 28, 2025.

In the new letter, Governor Fubara recalled the earlier 48-hour dateline given to him by the Lawmakers to represent the appropriation bill, and his inability to do so owing to the unavailability of the Certified True Copy, CTC, of the Court’s verdict at the time of the ultimatum.

He, also, made mention of how he was denied access to the  Assembly Quarters when he came for the representation of the budget estimate on Wednesday March 12.

The new letter from the Governor to the Lawmakers, through the Speaker, Rt Hon. Amaewfule, was dated March 13, 2025.

But curiously, rather than attend to the Governor’s request for a date for the budget representation, the House on Friday resolved to adjourn sine die during plenary presided over by Speaker Amaewfule.

The Assembly’s disposition has once again reaffirmed its determination not to back down on its avowed mission to  humiliate the Governor and paralyze Government business in Rivers State.

This is even as Governor Fubara had in his latest letter sued for peace and understanding on the part of all parties in the logjam in the overall interests of the State and the people.

He had appealed for all arms of Government to operate within the acceptable and constitutional and legal framework for the good of Rivers people.

“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe the interests of the State and our people should take priority over political conflicts”, Governor Fubara stated .

War Has Been Declared In Rivers State – Tonye Cole

0
Tonye Cole and Simi Fubara and Speaker Martin Amaewfule

By Adesina Soyooye

The Rivers State Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 Governorship Election, Tonye Cole, has said that war has been declared in the State.

Cole, a close business and political ally of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, after analysing the sorry state of his home State posited that the mere fact that the Governor of the State was locked out and denied entry into the State Assembly Complex by the Lawmakers does not only spell doom, but a declaration of war.

Cole, also, reminded, in case anybody was forgetting, that the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is now, just a Governor in name; he is not in a position to exercise any powers; he has been caged; power has shifted, and been taken away from him.

Cole, who spoke on an Arise Television interview segment said the consequences is dire for the State, and the people will bleed.

Recall that following the Supreme Court’s judgment of February 28 which ordered the Governor to re-present the 2025 Budget which he had earlier presented to a small faction of the House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, the Governor had on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, gone to present it in adherence to the Court order,  but the gate was locked against him, thus denying him access.

Caught in that embarrassing situation, the Governor explained that before proceeding to the Assembly Complex, he had placed a number of calls to Speaker Martin Amaewfule but the Speaker did not take the calls. He, also, forwarded a letter to that effect to which the Speaker failed to respond. And, these are beside his earlier invitation to the Members in a letter addressed to the Speaker for a meeting at the Government House to enable them sort issues out. He was snubbed.

But in its defence the House of Assembly accused the Governor of playing to the gallery and producing a comedy skit.

Its Spokesperson and Chairman of Committee on Information, Enemi Alabo George said the Governor embarked on a mission to tarnish the image of the Assembly.

He explained that following the Supreme Court judgment, they had invited the Governor to present the Budget before them on March 3, but he failed.

“We were the ones who, immediately after that judgment, appealed to the Governor to bring his appropriation bill. We acted immediately because we have the interest of the State at heart and didn’t want Rivers people to suffer any harm,” George posited.

But in his interview with Arise Television, Cole  maintained that the crisis will stop investment in the state.

Locking out the Governor, Cole added, is a clear statement that he is just a Governor by title, but remains an empty and powerless one. Power has left him.

Cole: “I am looking forward to the day we will be called to come and discuss progress in Rivers State. What is happening is pure power play. At the end of the day, the people suffer, Rivers State suffers and we are not going to get any investment.

“The Governor being locked out by the House of Assembly members is purely a statement being made to him that you may have the title of governor, but you do not govern this State, the power has shifted and this is what is being said loudly and clearly, and it does not mean well for us. Fubara was given an ultimatum to present the budget within a specific time.

“In a Government with peace between the executive and legislative, you don’t see any of these sheneinigas. What we have here is a full-blown declaration of war on both sides, and people will bleed for it.”

First Bank MD Gripped With Fear, After N.5bn Disappeared From Depositor’s Account

0
Olusegun Alebiosu - First Bank MD

The Managing Director of Nigeria’s premier commercial bank, First Bank Nigeria Limited, Olusegun Alebiosu is currently in a quandary as to how close to N600 million disappeared from a businessman’s account.

Alebiosu is confused on how the parent company First Holdco  boss, Femi Otedola will respond to report that the bank’s image has been further dragged in the mud as it grapples with some fraudulent employees of the bank who are bent on sinking its reputation.

The development is coming  a few months after an employee of the bank’s Iganmu branch in Lagos, Tijani Muiz Adeyinka,  stole over N40 billion belonging to some customers, and disappeared.

Adeyinka who headed the branch’s electronic products team as a manager at the time of the fraud has yet to be apprehended.

Keen stakeholders in the sector are still asking how the fraud could have been orchestrated without the knowledge of those at the top.

The incident which shocked the world, as to how such a humongous amount of money could develop wings from the bank’s vault without the knowledge of the management, has remained a huge shock to the entire banking world.

In its response to the infamy the commercial bank suffered at the time, the Chairman of the parent company, First Holdco, Femi Otedola sacked the then managing director, Kazeem Adeduntan in anger.

Adeduntan was unceremoniously kicked out of the bank, few months to his retirement, after serving the commercial bank for more than two decades, by Otedola who felt he was not really in charge for Adeyinka to have stolen N40 billion right under his nose.

Sources in the commercial bank informed the magazine that the current chief executive and his management are now gripped with fear following report by a business man, Dr Eke Agabi in Abia state that close to N600 million has developed wings from his account without his knowledge.

The business man has now sued the bank for fraud, in what can further plunder the image of Nigeria’s premier financial institution down the slope.

How did the fraud happened?

According to Dr Agbai, the money was withdrawn from his account after he threatened to withdraw the large amount from his fixed deposit account domiciled in the Abriba branch of the bank, not long after the bank decided to close the branch.

In the suit filed by his lawyer, Ebuka Nwaeze, the Abia businessman claimed that the commercial bank emptied the account for fear that he might withdraw the money. The entire deposit was withdrawn six times without him knowing what was going on.

Dr Eze claimed that he only got to know after his mobile banking application stopped working and he could no longer transact with the account.

The entire money, he further claimed, was withdrawn N55 million apiece for six consecutive times without any recourse to him. He said he’s yet to recover from the shock, and remained dazed as to how a corporate organization like FBN could behave in such a callous manner.

He further explained that he had kept the money in the account as his own contribution to the development of the community, but that when the management decided to close the branch, he concluded that there was no longer any reason to keep the money with the bank.

In his quest to find out what happened to his money, the businessman visited one of the branches in Abuja, the nation’s capital where he was informed that his account has been emptied.

He was shocked to learn of the sad news that nothing was left in his account, and has since been making efforts to have the situation reversed, according to his lawyer.

The alleged fraud committed two years ago has yet to be settled by the bank, as the businessman claimed that his money has not been returned to his account.
