The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on New Media, Olabamji Enitan Jowosimi, has descended very heavily on a former two-term Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi over his comments on Tinubu’s incapacity to lead Nigeria.

Amaechi, who was also Nigeria’s Minister for Transportation for eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, had said at a lecture in his honour, in Abuja, on Saturday to mark his 60th Birthday that Tinubu lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria.

He revealed that it was because of his conviction that Tinubu has no such capacity that he told the President, to his face, that he would neither work with him, campaign for him, nor vote for him. He more than hinted that Tinubu’s type hardly care for the people, but only interested in their pockets. Amaechi, also, said he was with the grand opposition to sweep the President out of office in 2027, and was confident it would work.

Buy in a swift and strongly-worded reaction to Amaechi’s hard comments against Tinubu, Jowosimi dismissed Amaechi as irrelevant in the politics of Rivers State and Nigeria. He, also,  dismissed Amaechi as a “self-anointed candidate” a reference to some talks in the months leading to the Presidential Primary that Buhari had anointed him as his successor before it zeroed down to former Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan. However, Tinubu out-witted them all, picked the ticket and finally became the President.

In his post where he tackled Amaechi, he said of the  birthday lecture: “The desperate gathering of sore losers is no threat to a man born to win.”

Jowosimi mocked Amaechi over his non-relevance in the scheme of things in Rivers State saying that even without his support, President  Tinubu won the Presidential election in Rivers State. He taunted him for his inability to deliver Rivers State to tye APC either as a sitting Governor or as Director General of the Presidential Campaign

The full text of his post reads: “I told Tinubu I was not going to vote for him” – Rotimi Amaechi, the self-acclaimed ‘anointed’  candidate.

“The desperate gathering of sore losers is no threat to a man born to win.

“You withheld your support – yet he swept Rivers State. A State you couldn’t deliver either as a sitting Governor or as DG of the campaign. Physician, heal thyself.

“You didn’t vote for him? Over 8 million Nigerians did. Today, he sits confidently in the Villa as President.

Guess where you sit? In lowly company with co-wailers, crying over spilled political milk.

“And no, let’s not apply BBL – this wasn’t about capacity. It was the bitter pill of a primary loss that your pride couldn’t swallow. A political opportunist with one worn out strategy – Presidential anointing.

“When the oil don’t  drop, your ambition dried up. Defeat became your destiny, and malice became your message.

How poetic?

“Truth is, if anyone should feel slighted, it should be the man who visited you personally – extending a hand to keep the house united. But what did you do? You slammed the door and sulked in the corner.

“No surprises here – Asiwaju knows betrayal like the back of his hand. He’s played this game too long to be ambushed by the antics of desperate neophytes.

“While you weep, Jagaban leads – with grace, maturity, statesmanship, and the mandate of millions.

You claim to have denied him your support, yet, he soars while you sink.

“Make it make sense? It already does.

“The palm tree doesn’t fear the envy of shrubs. The eagle doesn’t lose sleep over the noise of chickens.

“In the end, winners win.

A former two-time Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that President Bola Tinubu does not have the capacity to either govern Nigeria, or lift it out from the doldrums.

Amaechi who was also Nigeria’s Minister for Transportation under the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari also disclosed that the President knows his opinion about his capacity.

Speaking at a lecture in Abuja to mark his 60th birthday, Amaechi said it was because of the capacity-deficit of the President to lead Nigeria that he told Tinubu that he, Amaechi, was not prepared to work with his Government.

The foundation member of the APC also revealed that he neither campaigned for Tinubu nor voted for him.

Amaechi: “I met President Tinubu in Yola and I told him I will not work for you, and I will not vote for you.

“I told him like that. People have been saying I do not work for All People’s Congress (APC), or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). That is because I was convinced that there was an issue of capacity.”

The theme of the birthday lecture was “Weaponization of Poverty” and it was attended by a high profile audience which included the Emir of Kano, Sule Lamido Sanusi, Prof Wole Soyinka, former Governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai,   former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, several traditional rulers, many others and a whole lot Amaechi’s loyalists from Rivers State.

Incidentally, no past Governor of Rivers State, including the man who he said ranks only second in his life to his biological father, Dr. Peter Odili, was present. Not a few people counted that as a minus for the celebrant.

Amaechi, also, lamented the disaster voting on religious and tribal sentiments have wrought on Nigeria. His words:

“Let me tell you, no Nigerian leader cares for the poor, because they know that Nigerians can do nothing to them once they are in power. When Nigerians protested, the President announced an increase in the price of fuel because they know you cannot do anything.

“Nigerian leaders and elites are not the problem of Nigeria; the problem of Nigeria is the followers.

“We say Nigeria is a capitalist country, but capitalists are those who invest in production, however, Nigeria does not produce anything, we just want to feast on the revenue gotten from crude oil.

“I was ashamed of one of my appointees when I was the Minister of Transport. I appointed her to improve and turnaround things around, unfortunately, she was more interested in speaking Hausa/Fulani to the President.”

“An ordinary Northerner who is a Muslim has no problem with the ordinary Southerner who is a Christian. It is when they come to elections, they will tell you.

“Now you have a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Let the Muslim-Muslim market come out now. It’s time. We are all hungry. All of us are. If you are not hungry, I am”

Speaking on  the 2027 Presidential Elections Amaechi insisted that Tinubu could be beaten in 2027 if the opposition work together and added that beating Tinubu in 2027 is one of the reasons he is in opposition.

Amaechi was was beaten to a distant second place by Tinubu in the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Primaries. Amaechi had alleged after his defeat that the Primary was corrupted by money. Since that defeat, Americans has given both the Party and President Tinubu a lot of space. And, now, finally, he has joined the opposition and publicly says “Tinubu should go!”

My attention has just been drawn to former vice-president Atiku Abubakar’s vitriol against the Tinubu administration and the person of President Bola Tinubu.

Every line of the blanket criticism reeks of hate. Except ex-VP Atiku was beclouded when spewing his criticism, why did he not admit some good deeds by this government in the last two years?

While I respect Atiku and every Nigerian’s right to voice their opinions in our vibrant democracy, I need to set the record straight and address the fallacies in Atiku’s commentary.

Unless Atiku still lives in Dubai, he ought to admit that in just two years, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has embarked on the most ambitious economic and institutional reforms ever seen in decades. During the campaign, he never promised that the reforms would be easy and painless. But he was clear they were necessary to rescue the country from the brink of fiscal collapse to reverse years of unsustainable spending and lay a solid foundation for long-term inclusive growth.

The removal of the fuel subsidy and unification of the foreign exchange system were steps successive administrations, including that of Obasanjo-Atiku Abubakar, acknowledged as necessary but failed to implement. Atiku promised the reforms in his manifesto. Indeed, all three major candidates in the election agreed they must be done, except that the responsibility to implement the reforms fell on President Bola Tinubu, as the winner of the  2023 election.

Unlike Atiku and some critics, everyone agrees that the reforms have stabilised government finances, curbed systemic corruption, and enabled direct investments into social programmes and infrastructure. Foreign investors now see Nigeria as an irresistible destination. Since 2023, the Nigerian Exchange has seen its ASI jump from 50,000 to over 110,000, and market capitalisation has increased to  N69.4 trillion, from about N30 trillion before Tinubu’s ascension.

Contrary to Atiku’s claim that government policies are “anti-people,” the Tinubu administration, fully acknowledging that its policies affect the vulnerable, has increased investments in social safety nets, introduced targeted interventions for low-income households, and more than doubled the minimum wage, from N30k to N70k. Some states even pay up to N85k to their workers, a feat made possible by increased federal allocations.

Atiku’s claim that education was out of reach for poor Nigerians was entirely off the mark. Everyone knows the claim is false; it’s just an attempt to throw any muck at Bola Tinubu.

Since last year, the government has introduced the Student Loan Scheme to ensure that underprivileged children are not denied education because of poverty. As of the last count, over 600,000 Nigerian students have benefitted from the loans. The loans cover the students’ school fees and living allowances. The loans do not yet cover Nigerians in expensive schools like Atiku’s American University in Yola. What is undeniable is that under Bola Tinubu, higher education is now more accessible to deserving youths.

This administration has also made huge investments in health, including revitalising primary health centres and expanding health insurance. The government is also working hard to reduce the cost of medicines.

Atiku again ignorantly accused the Tinubu administration of borrowing fresh money to support the 2025 budget. He obviously relied on social media gossip that the fresh loan request to the National Assembly was for that purpose. The Finance Minister has debunked this as untrue and said that even this year, the government only wants to borrow about $1.2 billion.

Because Atiku does not like  Bola Tinubu’s guts, he forgets to credit his administration with some of the fiscal achievements in the last two years. Revenue has increased phenomenally. Debt service ratio to revenue has declined from 93 percent to 60 percent. This government has paid off the $3.2 billion IMF loan obtained in the Covid years. The current administration has discontinued Ways & Means deficit financing for the first time in decades. State revenue has risen, and subnational governments now have greater resources for local development and to pay their debts. This is the only positive Atiku admitted, forgetting to praise the Tinubu government that made this possible.

This government has admitted honestly that the reforms come with attendant challenges and has worked vigorously to lessen the pain.

But as President Tinubu said in his statement, marking his second anniversary, we have made progress. Inflation is easing, food production is rising, investments are returning, and the foundation for a more prosperous, just, and inclusive Nigeria is being laid. These gains are in plain sight for everyone. Only those who play blind will not see them.

Atiku and his co-travellers in the coalition party he is cobbling together need not worry about their democratic rights. As an acknowledged democrat, President Tinubu will not curtail their rights or silence them.

Finally, criticism must be elevated and constructive. When Atiku opposes government policies, he should also offer a solution. Otherwise, his opposition statements will be dismissed as mere partisan rhetoric and cheap talk.

Nigerians deserve opposition leaders who offer solutions, not just criticism. We invite all Nigerians to judge this administration by its actions, not by the rhetoric of those who have had their opportunities to lead and who bungled the chance in years past, sold national assets for pittance and shortchanged their compatriots.
