Lagos NYSC: Why We Sent Our Corp Members To Ondo, Kwara

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, says its accommodation problems will soon become a thing of the past when its permanent site, being built by the Lagos state government is completed.

The NYSC state’s Coordinator, Mrs Christiana Salmwang made the remark at the weekend while expressing gratitude to the state governor Babajide Sanwoolu for embarking on the project of completing the new site in Agbowa, Ikorodu a suburb of the state.

She spoke during the swearing-in ceremony of the over 7000 newly deployed corps members under the 2025 Batch ‘A’, Stream 2, posted to the state.

According to her, the state NYSC had been forced to send corps members posted to the state, to Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Kwara due to the lack of space to accommodate them.

The NYSC coordinator said the state government has provided huge support to ensure that the site in Ikorodu is completed within the expected time frame saying the project “will resolve the longstanding accommodation challenges,” being faced by corps members when it’s completed. She also noted the ongoing efforts by the state government to repair its Temporary  camp in Iyana Ipaja to make it liveable.

“We recently visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment and found that the work is nearing completion.

“We believe its completion will resolve the longstanding accommodation challenges we’ve faced over the years.

“It is due to the lack of adequate accommodation that we have had to send some corps members—as we have done with the current batch—to other states such as Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, and so on for their three-week orientation course before returning to Lagos for their primary assignments,” she stated.

The magazine reports that the state chapter of the NYSC has been using its temporary site in Iyana Ipaja for years, a situation that has posed serious accommodation problems for corp members posted to the state because of its small size.

To ensure smooth take-off of this scheme, Dangote Refinery has invested in the procurement of 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers. This phase of the programme will continue over an extended timeframe. The refinery is also investing in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations, commonly referred to as daughter booster stations, supported by a fleet of over 100 CNG tankers across the country to ensure seamless product distribution.

This strategic programme is part of our broader commitment to eliminating logistics costs, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability and supporting Nigeria’s economic development. It affirms our dedication to improving the availability and affordability of fuel, in support of broader efforts to strengthen the economy and improve the well-being of all Nigerians.

Under this initiative, all petrol stations purchasing PMS and diesel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery will benefit from this enhanced logistics support. Key sectors such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and others will also gain from this transformative initiative, as reduced fuel costs will contribute to lower production costs, reduced inflation, and foster economic growth. Players in these key sectors and others can purchase directly from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

In addition, the refinery will offer a credit facility to those purchasing a minimum of 500,000 litres—allowing them to obtain an additional 500,000 litres on credit for two weeks, under bank guarantee.

Obi, who flew into the United Kingdom at the weekend on a local airline, Air Peace, wrote in his X handle that the flight was smooth and lively.

He appealed to Nigerian elites to always support and patronise local Businesses as it’s not easy to establish and sustain a viable business.

With the above words, suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, played down, albeit  philosophically, the disappointment of President Bola Tinubu’s failure to leverage the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day to restore democratic order in Rivers State.

The Source reports that expectations had been high that the President who on March, 18, 2025 proclaimed  emergency rule in Rivers State, and appointed a Sole Administrator after suspending the Governor, his deputy and the state lawmakers for six  months, will use the opportunity of the Democracy Day to restore constitutional order in the State.

But at a joint sitting of the two chambers of the National Assembly on Thursday ,the President rather sought to consolidate the reign of the Administrator Vice Admiral rtd Ibok-Ete Ibas, leaving not a few observers seriously bewildered and disappointed.

However, at an event in Bonny, on Saturday, June 14, 2025, Governor Fubara expressed the optimism that he will triumph at the end of the current tribulations.

According to him, he does not, in anyway, feel  shortchanged or losing anything, insisting that victory will smile on him in the end.

God, he said, has continued to keep and strengthen him so much  so that he does not  feel any personal loss.

What is important, according to him, is to always remain focused, sincere and committed to a good cause in life.

For him, it is not the power in one’s hands that matters, but the use to which it is put, especially in the service of humanity.

“Everybody will not like your style, but when you know that what you doing is right,

you are sure that in 25 to 30 years, if placed in any box, and you are asked a question, you can defend your action. That is what makes you a man.

“Some people accuse me of a lot of things, but the truth is that I can’t be what I am not, or who i am not.

“My message to you our people is for you to be strong. At times you need to lose first to win. For me and anybody who believes in me, I have never considered myself losing anything. It is only when you attach life to things that it will bother you.

The Supreme Court has flayed  deliberate attempts to undermine its credibility.

The Apex Court warned against peddling falsehood and mischievous reports against Justices on its bench and the judiciary as an institution.

The Court on Saturday insisted that it will no longer tolerate deliberate falsehood being propagated to lower integrity of individual Justices and the judiciary.

Reacting to social media report that one of its Justices travelled to Benin City on account of a political case recently filed before the Court, it urged commentators on judicial matters to always exercise responsibility, discretion and restraint in their comments.

A statement signed by Dr. Festus Akande, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, expressed displeasure over the falsehood social media news against the Justice.

The statement read in part: “The attention of the Supreme Court has been drawn to a disturbing and false narrative being circulated on social media and certain online platforms alleging that a Justice of the Supreme Court travelled to Benin City on account of a political case recently filed before the Court.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Justice in question travelled to Benin City on Thursday, 12th June, 2025 to attend the funeral rites of the late mother of Mr. Hannibal Uwaifo, a senior member of the Bar and immediate past President of the African Bar Association.

“Prior to the journey, the said Justice formally sought and obtained permission from the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria to embark on the trip.

“This private visit was strictly for the purposes of condolence and bereavement as is customary and humane.

“The Honourable Justice neither attended any political meeting nor solicited for inclusion on any panel as falsely alleged.

“In fact, apart from the funeral service held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and a brief stop at the service of songs, the Honourable Justice retired to his hotel room without attending any further gatherings or receptions.

“The image being circulated purportedly as evidence merely shows the Justice returning alone to his hotel, hardly a basis for the sensational claims being peddled.

“The Supreme Court wishes to state unequivocally that this sort of baseless speculation and malicious conjecture, especially when publicly propagated by persons who ought to know better, is not only unhelpful but also deeply harmful to the integrity of the Judiciary.

“We strongly urge members of the public, especially commentators on judicial matters to exercise responsibility and discretion.

“Where there is any doubt or lack of clarity, the appropriate step is to seek verification from the Supreme Court through its official communication channels rather than resorting to the spread of falsehoods aimed at maligning the image of the Justices or bringing the judiciary into disrepute.

“The Judiciary remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will not be distracted by deliberate attempts to undermine its credibility.”

The Gombe State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Regional Integration, Yusuf Kulani and four others have been electrocuted.

The Gombe  State Police Command on Saturday June 14, 2025,announced the death of five persons from electrocution arising  from electricity current surge. The dead include a Permanent Secretary in the State Civil Service.

No fewer than 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries  in the unfortunate incident which occurred early Saturday morning in the Tudun Wadan Pantami Community of Gombe metropolis.

Mourning the dead, the Governor described the incident as heartbreaking and a colossal loss, not only to the immediate families of the deceased, but to the entire Gombe State.

“I received with profound sadness the devastating news of the tragic electrocution incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 14th June 2025, in Tudun-Wadan Pantami, which led to the death of five individuals and left several others injured.

“This heart-wrenching incident, reportedly caused by a high-voltage surge from a nearby electricity transformer, has plunged our state into mourning.

“The demise of Alhaji Yusuf Kulani and others in such a devastating incident is deeply painful. Alhaji Kulani was a diligent, disciplined, and patriotic officer who served our dear state with integrity and commitment. The loss of such valuable lives, including other promising citizens, is a painful blow not only to their immediate families but to the entire Gombe State.

“Let me assure the affected families and the general public that we will collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the root cause of this tragedy and take all appropriate measures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from recurring.

“On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives in this tragic event. May Allah grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest in Aljannat Firdaus and give their families the fortitude to bear the huge loss. I also pray for the quick and full recovery of those who sustained injuries”.

A statement from the  Command’s spokesperson Buhari Abdullahi, a DSP, blamed the incident on high-voltage surge from the community’s electricity transformer.

According to Abdullahi ,operatives from the Low-cost Divisional Police formation ,while responding to distress calls  promptly evacuated the victims. The injured are be currently receiving medical attention.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the unfortunate incident claimed the lives of five persons while 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The deceased have been deposited at the following morgues: three at the Federal Teaching Hospital FTH Gombe; one at the State Specialist Hospital ,and one at Bolari Filin Hospital Kwallo Mortuary” the police stated

This is just as the state Commissioner of Police CP Bello Yahaya extended his heartfelt condolences to the families ,relations and friends of the victims.

While praying for the quick recovery of the injured, CP Yahaya pledged that a comprehensive inquest will be carried to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sad development, with a view to preventing a future occurrence.

“President Muhammadu Buhari Conferred CON on me in 2023. I am grateful to him”

A couple of days after President Bola Tinubu conferred National Honours on those he called heroes of Democratic struggle  including Journalists, one of the foremost activists, denied the honour, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has spoken.

Ojudu,  Political Adviser to former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, was conspicuously absent from the honour’s list.

The former Senator who represented Ekiti Central District, said that he was not expecting recognition from the President Tinubu-led administration, considering his criticisms of the Government.

He congratulated the honourees while recalling his contribution during the pro-democracy struggle alongside those who made the list in a statement released on Saturday.

“Let me begin by extending my heartfelt congratulations to my colleagues—Dapo Olorunyomi, Bayo Onanuga, Kunle Ajibade, Seye Kehinde, and many others—who have been deservedly recognized for their courage and contribution to the fight for democracy.

“Their recognition is, also, in many ways, recognition of all of us who walked that difficult road. Any honor extended to them is an honor I proudly share.

“That said, I feel compelled to clarify that my involvement in the pro-democracy movement was never motivated by the expectation of a national honour.

“I did what I did—risking my life, enduring imprisonment, torture, and other deprivations—not for reward, but out of conviction and in obedience to my conscience.

“I believed then, as I still do now, that the Nigerian people deserve freedom, dignity, and the right to determine their future.

“It would be unrealistic, especially in the African political context, to expect magnanimity from a sitting President toward individuals who have been openly critical of his policies or withheld support for his political ambitions.

“I did not vote for this President in 2023 and have remained vocal about the direction of his administration. I understand, therefore, the political nature of recognition and take no offense in being omitted from the list.

“As a matter of fact, I remain grateful to the previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari, which honoured me with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2023.

“While I did not set out in search of accolades, I accepted that honor in the spirit of national unity and recognition of a shared history.” Ojudu wrote.

The former lawmaker however called on the President to bestow the greatest honour to Nigerians which is good governance.

He noted the challenges currently facing the country.

“As we celebrate our colleagues who have been recognised, I believe we should collectively call on President Tinubu to bestow the greatest honour possible—not just on individuals, but on the entire Nigerian populace. That honour lies in good governance.

“Nigerians today are facing hardships that, in many cases, rival or even surpass the difficulties experienced under military rule. From economic instability to growing insecurity, from lack of access to basic services to a feeling of disenfranchisement, the promise of democracy seems distant for many of our fellow citizens”, Ojudu said.

He, however, stressed that true dividend of democracy goes beyond symbolic recognition, but addressing the yearnings of the people who are being impoverished.

Ojudu also highlighted key areas President Tinubu can display his democratic principles.

“The true dividend of democracy must go beyond symbolic recognition. It must be seen in:

  • A free and fair electoral process where every vote counts;
  • Strong and accountable political institutions;
  • An economy that allows citizens to live with dignity;
  • A society where life and property are secure;
  • And a government that listens and responds to the people it serves.

“This, I believe, is the legacy that those of us who fought for democracy envisioned. And this, I hope, is the path the current administration will embrace”.

It would be recalled that many people habe criticised the choice of honorees, who were believed to have contributed to the battle to drive the Military back to the Barracks after about 16 years interregnum.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu conferred Posthumous Honours on late Political Actors and Activists such as Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, Human Rights Lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Dr. Ken Saro-Wiwa  a Writer, Environmentalists and Ogoni Peoples’ Rights Agitator and members of the Ogoni Nine amongst others.

While some members of the public commended the President for the recognition of the individuals, some faulted the selection process as they noted prominent public figures were omitted from the list.

Amongst the June 12 and pro-democracy activists considered deserving of national honour but who were omitted include Ovation Magazine publisher, Aare Dele Momodu; activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore; and journalist, Senator Babafemi Ojudu amongst others.

Mass Killing Rocks Benue State, 107 Bodies Burnt Beyond Recognition

At least 107 people have been confirmed dead following a fatal attack on Yelewata community in Benue State.

The attack was allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen in the early hours of Saturday.

It was gathered that the attackers invaded the village at dawn, unleashing deadly violence that left dozens dead and many others wounded.

Victims include women, children, the elderly, and security officials.

Some bodies were reportedly charred beyond recognition.

Gberindyer Vanen, a Local, painted grim scenes of destruction, recounting seeing human bodies still burning in homes.

One Elder, Zege Orkwande, disclosed that 107 corpses had been found so far been found, and feared that the death toll may rise as the search continues.

Hon. Thaddeus Orkpe, a House of Representatives aspirant for Makurdi/Guma, has sent a condolence message to the Government and the affected Community,  expressing deep sorrow and called for urgent action on security.

He described the attack as “senseless and brutal,” urging authorities to pursue justice for the victims and ensure protection for vulnerable communities.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed  the incident without confirming the casualty figures.

Meanwhile, the State Government is yet to issue any formal response to the attack

Kaduna Police Command Confirms Arrest Of 183 Suspects, Recovers Weapons, Drugs

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced the arrest of 183 suspects during a clampdown on criminal hideouts and black spots across the State.

Police said the raids were in tandem with the renewed and continuous effort to rid the State of criminal elements and safeguard lives and properties.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, explained that the suspects were apprehended in a coordinated operation spearheaded by Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in metropolitan areas, particularly in Rigasa, Kawo, Tudun wada, Sabon Tasha and other communities.

The Command’s spokesman disclosed that the crackdown, which was part of ongoing efforts to restore public confidence and enhance internal security, led to the recovery of dangerous weapons and hard drugs.

As part of the operation, he disclosed that on June 13, 2025, police carried out raids in Rigasa which resulted in the recovery of illicit drugs and 30 bags and about 1,600 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and other dangerous weapons.

On the same day, at about 11:45pm, he said residents of Rafin Guza discovered a bag abandoned during a police hot pursuit of suspected criminals containing an AK-47 rifle magazine loaded with 31 rounds of live ammunition.

DSP Hassan also revealed that investigations were currently underway to trace the culprits, assuring that they will soon be apprehended and brought to justice.

“Also, on June 9, 2025, around 11am, operatives of Kakuri Police Division, acting on a tip-off, posed as buyers and arrested a 35-year-old Ziya Abdullah while attempting to sell a vehicle suspected to be stolen.

“Abdullah was arrested, and this later led to the arrest of his accomplice, one Bashir Usman a.k.a. Yellow.”

According to the PPRO, the suspects confessed to robbing a residence in Gona, using knives and cutlasses, and stealing a Honda Accord car which was later recovered in Zaria.

The police spokesman said efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing gang members.

He added that some of the suspects have been charged to court while others were currently undergoing thorough investigation by the police.

DSP Hassan assured that the remaining suspects found culpable will be arraigned in court soonest in accordance with the law.

Owners of vehicles with tinted glasses got a grace period of extra two months as the Inspector- General of Police, (IGP) Kayode  Egbetokun, has approved an extension for the enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit requirement. It  will expire on August 12, 2025.

This was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi.

The statement reads “This extension comes on the heels of many concerns and feedback expressed by members of the public regarding the reactivation of the digital Tinted Glass Permit application process.

“In line with our commitment to delivering transparent, inclusive, and citizen-focused policing, the Force wishes to affirm that it has not ignored the voices of Nigerians.

“Rather, these voices have been instrumental in guiding ongoing reviews of the process to ensure it remains user-friendly, secure, and accessible to all.

“The extension of enforcement is also intended to give room for additional enhancements and refinements to the application process, ensuring that no member of the public is unduly disadvantaged.

“The NPF is actively working to simplify and improve both the physical and contactless application options, including enhanced verification mechanisms and streamlined procedures to reduce delays and eliminate undue inconveniences.

“Members of the public are reminded that the authorized platform for the application and renewal of the Tinted Glass Permit is accessible via possap.gov.ng.

“Citizens are also encouraged to report all unauthorized or hidden charges as well as extortion in the course of application or biometric capturing to the appropriate Police authorities.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to public safety, digital innovation, and continuous improvement in service delivery, and appreciates the cooperation and patience of the Nigerian people as these reforms are carried out.”
