Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwu, describing him as one of the nation’s greatest sports icons. In a heartfelt tribute, Obi recalled Chukwu’s towering influence in Nigerian football, where he earned the affectionate nicknames “Field Marshal” and “Chairman” among fans and peers. According to him, Chukwu was not only an outstanding footballer but also an exemplary leader who captained and later coached both the national team and his cherished club, Rangers International of Enugu.

Obi praised Chukwu’s immense contributions to the beautiful game, noting that his skill, discipline, and  commitment brought pride to Nigeria and joy to millions of football enthusiasts across Africa and beyond. He highlighted Chukwu’s dedication to nurturing young talents, serving as a mentor and coach even after his playing days, and playing a pivotal role in the development of football in Nigeria. Obi described the late footballer’s life marked by resilience and patriotism, asserting that his legacy would remain an inspiration for all.

Reflecting on recent losses within the football community, Obi also mourned the death of Christian Isiadinso, another captain of Rangers International, who passed away in March. He observed that both Chukwu and Isiadinso sacrificed immensely for the advancement of sports and the nation at large. Offering his condolences, Obi extended his prayers to the bereaved families, the football fraternity, and the entire nation, hoping that God would grant the departed eternal rest and that their legacies would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian athletes.

FG Imposes 10 Year Visa Ban, $25 Fine, On Foreigners Who Overstay

The Federal Government has slammed a fine of $15 daily  and 10 Years Visa Ban on Foreigners Who Overstay in Nigeria.

The strict immigration penalties is targeted at expatriates who overstay their visas. Those who overstay beyond six months will face a five-year entry ban, while a one-year overstay will attract a 10-year ban.

According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the penalty will take effect from August 1, 2025.

Tunji-Ojo announced this while unveiling the Ministry of Interior’s new Expatriate Administration System during a meeting with the Organised Private Sector and other stakeholders at the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association House in Ikeja, Lagos.

Among the reforms set to roll out from May 1 are the automated Landing and Exit Cards, Electronic Visa, Expatriate Comprehensive Insurance, and an upgraded Combined Expatriate Resident Permit and Alien Card.

Others include the Temporary Residence Visa, Temporary Work Permit, and revised Expatriate Quota system.

He said the measures are aimed to curb visa overstays and obtain accurate data on expatriates in Nigeria.

“Our records indicate fewer than 50,000 expatriates in Nigeria which we know is inaccurate. We need to establish the true number of foreigners living in the country. A nation without reliable data cannot progress, as data is the foundation of effective planning,” he said.

Under the new system, the Minister explained that Landing and Exit Cards would be automated, adding that expatriates must exit the country on or before their visa expiry date and apply for extensions only from outside Nigeria.

“This is serious. We’re not introducing anything new regarding the landing and exit card, just automating the current paper-based process. In a country of over 230 million intelligent, tech-savvy people, we shouldn’t be using paper cards. Going forward, you must complete your landing and exit cards online,” he added.

Tunji-Ojo added that the automated process would help track overstayers.

The Minister said, “If you overstay, there will be consequences. Overstaying by six months attracts a five-year ban; one year attracts a 10-year ban. There is also a $15 daily overstay penalty.

People claim to be visiting Nigeria for two weeks but stay for 30 years working — that must end.

“While the new measures take effect from May 1, a three-month moratorium will be given to allow expatriates to regularise their status before strict enforcement begins in August.”

According to the Minister, the new Electronic Visa system, also launching May 1, will allow applicants to obtain visas within 48 hours.

This replaces the existing visa-on-arrival regime, which he described as vulnerable to corruption and influence-peddling.

“We’re introducing the e-visa to make access to Nigeria easier for tourists and business travelers. Globally, population equals market, and we want to open our borders to legitimate opportunities.

“The e-visa eliminates bottlenecks. No more lobbying. It’s a seamless and secure system,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

He further announced the introduction of an annual Expatriate Comprehensive Insurance policy.

“We spend billions annually on repatriation. Just a month ago, we had exhausted our yearly budget and had to request an extra N25m.

That money should be used to build infrastructure, not deport individuals. We needed a sustainable solution,” he said.

The Minister explained that instead of demanding a lump sum for repatriation, which could exceed $10,000, the government had opted for a mandatory insurance policy.

“All over the world, there’s personal liability insurance. Your stay here should benefit both you and the host country — not leave Nigeria worse off.

The Expatriate Comprehensive Insurance is now mandatory and will be paid annually along with the CERPAC,” he said.

Obasa, it is gathered has been heating up the polity with his plan to impose his Son as the next Chairman of the LG.

The Stakeholders stated that Abdulganiyu Obasa is a political novice and paperweight, who remains unknown to the Local Party base and lacks any previous political experience or exposure.

They added that Abdulganiyu has no political antecedent. His sole hope is that his father will subvert the system in his favour.

The Agege Stakeholders stated that it is not acceptable, stressing that the push back from loyal and long suffering party members may degenerate into unnecessary and consequencial crises in the LG.

“The Youths and other critical stakeholder of APC in Agege Local Government and beyond are determined to stand strong and to stand tall and ensure that new faces are given the opportunity to contest, emerge and contribute their quota to society via a level playing field and transparent primaries. This is the crux of the matter.

“Your Excellency, Mr President, we the Concerned Citizens of Agege with deep humility and utmost respect hereby appeal for your firm intervention in this critical matter. Your love for Youths and humanity including the capacity to transform them into great leaders is not in doubt. Hence our abiding resolve to remain your critical foot soldiers anytime and anywhere, always standing on your sacred mandate. Sir, we are grateful for your timely intervention”.

Ignore Reports Of The Appointment of Dr Nwanosike, Others – Rivers State Govt

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Rivers State Government on Saturday April 12, 2025, strongly warned  against the peddling of fake news in the State.

This is just as the authorities vehemently denied rumours of the appointment of a former Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, as the new helmsman of the River state Waste Management Agency .

The Source reports that the social media has in the last 24 hours been awash with reports of the appointment of  Nwanosike, a purported  cousin of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as the new Sole Administrator of the state’s waste disposal agency .

Dr Nwanosike first  hit the lime light for the wrong reason ,when he disrespectfully tagged Governor Siminalayi Fubura as a ” mumu Governor ” last year at the heat of the political crisis in the state .

His rumoured appointment and those of other perceived loyalists of Wike has placed the State’s Sole Administrator on the spot with not a few questioning his motives and impartiality in the face of the disagreement between Governor Fubara and his erstwhile godfather .

But in a statement late on Saturday from Juliana Masi, the spokesperson for the SSG ,the State Government categorically refuted claims of Nwanosike’s appointment ,as well as the reported approval of the employment of about 10,000 persons by the State Civil Service Commission.

The SSG described all the reports as not only fake ,but misleading, noting that the purveyors are only out to create chaos and anarchy in the state .

“We wish to categorically inform the good people of Rivers State and the general public to ignore the fake announcements

Be informed that all official communications from the office of the Administrator of Rivers state have appropriate channels through which they are circulated. Pay attention to such channels.

The Government remains steadfast in its pursuit of a  peaceful, prosperous ,and united Rivers State”,part of the Government statement reads.

Rivers: Questions As LGA Chair Who Taunted, Insulted Gov. Fubara, Bags Big Job From Ibas

By Adesina Soyooye

For publicly dubbing the, now, suspended Governor of Rivers State, “Mumu Governor”, a former Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Council has bagged a big job from the Sole Administrator of the State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, rtd.

Recall that Dr Samuel Nwanosike, as a serving LGA Chairman, at a public fora, referred to the then unsuspended Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara, a “Mumu Governor”.

However, Ibas has,  surprisingly, appointed the unabashed staunch loyalist of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to a juicy office.

Nwanosike is now  the new Head of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA). appointment came on the heels of the surprisingly and much criticised dissolution of Commissions and Boards of Parastatals and Institutions by Ibas.

With the appointment of Nwanosike to high profile position, the story in Rivers State is that the Sole Administrator has lost the moral high ground of neutrality. They say he has shown where his loyalty lies. They point out that he could not have been ignorant of the relationship between Wike and Nwanosike and certainly not deaf to the insult hauled at Fubara by Nwanosike. They say it questions the neutrality of Ibas in the political crisis,  a product of the bad blood which flows between Wike and Fubara.

This appointment, they are saying, is likely to highten the political distrust and tension in the State.

Nwanosike’s appointment took effect from April 11, 2025, and was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Ibibia Worika.

President Bola Tinubu had on March 18, declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, suspended the democratically elected Governor Fubara, his Deputy, Dr Ngozi Odu, and Members of the State House of Assembly from office for an initial period of six months. He appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, rtd, a former Chief of Naval Staff, as the State’s Sole Administrator.

According to Hajia Salisu, all the trafficked children have had their names changed by those who bought them .

” One of the abducted children was stolen when he was seven days old, and he is now 7 years old and cannot identify his roots.

“But the authorities will do everything humanly possible to ensure that he is reunited with his family members.

“All of the children have their names changed from Hausa to other names .Those brought to Kaduna are under special intervention and emergency support of the Government under the Ministry’s facility to provide Psychosocial counseling and support, nutritional food, medical care and rehabilitation”,  the Commissioner stated.

“The woman uses her orphanage shelter for the stolen children and, thereafter, negotiates for their sale to prospective buyers in the South-east part of the country.

“This evil act is so alarming that all the children found and brought back have lost their original identities so much that they can’t remember their original homes.

“Seven of the children were received on 9th April 2025 from the State Commissioner of Police’s  office. The remaining children from Abuja, and six others brought back from Birnin -Kebbi, who were abducted and sold to a woman nicknamed Maman Salamatu in Calabar (real name withheld as this case is still under investigation in Kebbi state).

“These children are in our custody and also under our special care and emergency intervention. To this effect, we are calling on parents who lost their children and are searching for them to come forward with concrete evidence, proof of birth, and other relevant information, to  be reunited with their child ( ren) and or wards immediately after this press conference”, Salisu stated.
