By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has rubbished the talks making the rounds about his intended defection to the nascent Coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress, ADC. The ADC is the Party of choice by some political forces among whom are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party LP Peter Obi. It’s Protem Chairman and National Secretary are former Senate President, David Mark and the former two term Governor of Osun State, estranged political ally of President Bola Tinubu, Rauf Aregbesola.

Zulum’s denial is coming against the backdrop of widespread speculations claiming that he is on the brink of leading no fewer than five All Progressive Congress, APC, Governors into the Coalition family.

The Source reports that the Borno state Governor is strongly believed to be greatly unsettled by  alleged moves to sideline Vice President Kashim Shettima from the second term ambition of his boss, President Tinubu.

At the APC North East stakeholders meeting in Gombe State recently, Governor Zulum, led a protest against the refusal of the party leadership to include the Vice President in their endorsement of the President’s second term ambition.

This development, as well as certain political undercurrents which appear to have conferred a significant measure of credence to the rumoured plans to supplant Shettima as President Tinubu’s running mate in 2027 have accentuated talks about his loyalists including the Governor seeking alternative political abode.

The Vice President hails from Borno State, and is the immediate past  Governor of the State.

But in a statement at the weekend , from his media aide Dauda Iliya , the Borno state Governor described his rumoured defection plans as an unfounded fabrication being peddled by some unscrupulous elements seeking political relevance.

This is just as he reaffirmed his unflinching loyalty and commitment to the APC as a party.

“We have become aware of a fictitious and mischievous social media report circulating in certain quarters, alleging plans by me to decamp from the All Progressive Congress, APC, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, alongside five other Governors.

“This is entirely false, and exist only in the imagination of its sponsors. They are detractors who have made no meaningful contributions to the progress of Borno state or Nigeria.

“It is a classic example of cheap, politically motivated speculation designed solely to distract us ,and create unnecessary political tension.

” My loyalty to the APC remains firm and my dedication is solely to the welfare and progress of Borno state.

“I call on media outlets and the public to verify information from credible official sources ,and ignore the desperate fabrications of those seeking relevance through disinformation .

“We remain resolute in our commitment to serving Borno state under the banner of our great party ,the APC ” the statement quoted Governor Zulum as saying.”

By Akinwale Kasali

A former Presidential Candidate and Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has distanced himself from the recently formed Opposition Coalition, African Democratic Congress, ADC.

He criticized the Coalition members as the very individuals responsible for Nigeria’s long-standing political failures.

Sowore stated that he could not align with politicians he described as “country and destiny destroyers.

He said this

during a televised interview on Friday.

He accused the  Coalition members of recycling themselves under new political platforms without genuine intent for reform.

“I have no doubts that I don’t need to be in bed with strange bedfellows. I cannot be on a bridge that has been built and broken by the same people.”

The Coalition, which recently adopted the ADC as its official political vehicle, consists of members from various parties seeking to challenge the current government ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, Sowore dismissed the group as lacking credibility, blaming its veteran politicians for the dysfunctional state of the country.

According to him, they are not bridge builders but individuals who have repeatedly failed Nigeria under different party banners.

His comments come amid growing political realignments as opposition figures jostle for influence ahead of the next election cycle.

The Minister of Works, Engr Dave Umahi, has reaffirmed the willingness of the South East geo-political Zone to support the second term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027.

This is as he stoutly denied alleged growing insinuations that the region has made the release of detained  leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a precondition for its support of the President Bola Tinubu’s second term bid.

At a Media interactive session on Friday night, July 4, 2025, in Lagos, Umahi the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, noted that the visible achievements of the President within his two years in office will be the major driver of the region’s support for his return efforts.

According to him, much as the South East stakeholders are ever ready to negotiate the freedom of the leader of the Biafran group, it has never been, and will not be the basis for the region’s decision to queue behind the President in his quest for a second tenure in office.

“We are willing to negotiate his ( Nnamdi Kanu) release. But no one should make it a condition because the President did not put him there”, Umahi noted.

However, while describing President Tinubu as a listening leader, Umahi expressed unwavering faith that Kanu’s release will be achieved through divine grace and dialogue, and not through pressure or politics.

“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is doing most things right.

Look at where he picked up the economy from. The international community has confidence in his reforms. That is why we are getting support for our projects”, he stated.

According to Umahi, the President, since mounting the saddle two years ago has prioritized the rehabilitation and execution of key infrastructural projects in the South-east, including even those abandoned by previous administrations.

While dismissing the allegation of marginalization of the region in Federal appointments and other Government projects, the Works Minister insisted that President Tinubu has done more for the South-east than any past regime in the country.

This is just as he sued for  unity among the region’s leaders, irrespective of their political party affiliations.

He highlighted the cordial working relationship between the Governors of the Zone and the President regardless of their political party association.

On his political future and ambition, Umahi informed that his priority for now is not to run for the office of the President, but on how to ensure the reelection of President Tinubu so that he will complete his reengineering efforts.

“I will not run. I will work for my boss, President Tinubu. APC is the path to achieving what we want. The South-east now has a voice at the centre. We Will not return to Egypt”, Umahi emphasized.

The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a transnational human trafficking syndicate operating in Akure, rescuing 40 Ghanaian nationals allegedly trafficked into Nigeria under false pretences.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the rescue operation was carried out by the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS), following a petition forwarded through the Interpol Liaison Office at Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The petition highlighted the case of a Ghanaian citizen, David Angerinya, who was reportedly lured to Nigeria in 2024 with promises of employment. Upon investigation, the TIRS team, led by DSP Lekan Alabi, uncovered a wider trafficking operation.

Three suspects were apprehended during the raid: Hayford Nyamekye, Awine Alex, Kojo Felix.

Acting swiftly on the report, detectives from the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad, led by DSP Lekan Alabi, commenced a targeted investigation and subsequently apprehended three principal suspects.

Those arrested are Hayford Nyamekye,

Awine Alex and Kojo Felix, while the victim, David Angerinya, was successfully rescued during the operation.

State police command spokesman, Ayanlade Olusola in a statement, explained that “preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are part of a larger transnational trafficking syndicate that specializes in deceiving unsuspecting individuals, particularly from neighboring West African countries, into travelling to Nigeria with false assurances of lucrative job opportunities and visa arrangements to Canada and other Western nations.

“Alarmingly, an additional 39 Ghanaian nationals were discovered to have fallen victim to this same network. Many of them were found without valid travel documents, while those who had any presented expired ones.

“All arrested suspects are currently in police custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations.

“Furthermore, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the owners and caretakers of the buildings where the victims were harboured, as they may have had knowledge of or directly facilitated the illegal activities of the syndicate.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Ondo State Police Command to combating human trafficking and all forms of transnational organized crime.

“He urges members of the public to remain vigilant and report all suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency contact lines.”

Rivers Women Threaten Mass Action Over Wike’s Attack On Rotimi Amaechi’s Wife

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Aggrieved Rivers women ,under the aegis of Rivers State Women Association of Nigeria, RIVSWAN at the weekend berated the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Nyesom Wike over his verbal assault on the integrity and person of Dame Judith, wife of former Governor Rotimi  Amaechi.

They described the attack as totally unwarranted, malicious ,and misplaced.

The Source reports that Wike had, on Friday July 4, while reacting to Amaechi’s recent interview with the  Channels Television, alleged that the former Rivers State First Lady, Mrs Amaechi  collected  N4 billion monthly from the Niger Development Commission NNDC,  for the purpose of  training programmes for Niger Delta women.

But in a statement  by its Acting President, Ichechi Welendu,  RIVSWAN, while condemning the outburst strongly chided the FCT Minister for “peddling baseless falsehood driven by sheer bitterness, ignorance and a worrying lack of self-restraint.”

The women also urged the public to disregard ,and treat Wike’s unwarranted claims for what they truly are: “a concocted story fueled by personal vendetta and bitterness.”

Noted the group: the entire allegation is not only laughable, but an embarrassment to public discourse. It reflects either a gross misunderstanding of the NNDC’s budgetary structure or a deliberate effort to smear the name of a respected woman of substance”, the women group stated.

While commending the efforts of the Rivers state former First Lady in uplifting the wellbeing of women both in the State and in Niger Delta region, Welendu noted that most of Judith’s women -oriented programmes were, and are still mostly financed with personal resources.

According to the Women leader, Mrs Amaechi through the instrumentality of her NGO, Empowerment Support Initiative ESI, has over the  years, identified with, and supported girl-child education and general women empowerment across the South South region.

The group warned against any attempts by anyone or  groups under any guise to subject the person and integrity of the former First Lady to public ridicule, based on unfounded allegations.

This is as the women described Wike’s unwarranted attack on Judith as “a slap on the face of Rivers state Women.

The women, therefore, called on the FCT Minister to back his claims with documents or withdraw the unsavoury and irresponsible allegation.

The women group said failure by Wike to make public documents substantiating his allegations against Mrs Amaechi, could lead to some actions, including peaceful protest marches across the streets of Rivers state.

The women similarly urged President Bola  Tinubu to, as a matter of urgent necessity, call his Minister to order. They noted that  his continued unguarded utterances are unbecoming of a Federal Cabinet Member.

” Dame Judith Amaechi is a moral compass, a gospel preacher and a champion of good governance.

“Her support for her husband, the former Governor Rotimi Amaechi during his era of infrastructural transformation is well documented”, RIVSWAN stated

2027: Middle Belt Insists On Obi Because He Keeps “Promise”

0
Peter Obi waving his supporters

The Middle Belt Forum says it will stick with the 2023 Presidential candidate Peter Obi in the next presidential election. The Forum said this is because Obi keeps promise whenever he makes one.

The National President of MBF, Dr Bitrus Pogu made the remark amidst suggestions that the former Anambra state governor, is highly favoured to emerge the presidential candidate of ADC, the party that has been adopted by key opposition leaders in the country for the 2027 election.

Obi had stunned not a few after he came third in the 2023 Presidential election with over six million votes, receiving much of his support from the Middle Belt and south east Nigeria.

Some even believe he won the highly contested election but was robbed of victory after INEC declared Bola Tinubu the winner.

According to MBF it will have  no other option than to pull its support behind Obi who has a track record of promising and fulfilling same. The Forum warned that it will breaks the rank with the North if the region decides to chose another candidate.

The MBF insisted that the presidency must remain in the south, saying It’s either Obi or former President Goodluck Jonathan or nothing, urging the north to stick with the former governor in the spirit of power rotation arrangement in the country between the two larger regions, the North and South.

Dr. Pogu: “I want to say that a drowning person wouldn’t mind even holding onto a straw thinking that it will save him. So, in the situation which the North finds itself in, I do not think that their choices are many. Getting a Northerner to contest is a problem and they must have to trust somebody that has a track record of consistency which Peter Obi seems to have.

“But the issue now is, in spite of his pronouncement, in spite of the fact that they may extract a written agreement from him, will they faithfully carry out their support promises. That is the issue, because some of them could still say let us try our Atiku again or try one of those ones in the North, but they know that it is not going to sell, they know that very well. So they may still go for somebody in the South, either somebody who will promise them like Peter Obi or somebody like former President Jonathan if it is allowed, knowing that he cannot go beyond one term. So these are the options they have, because when people lack options, of course any option is a good option.”

NNPP To Kwakwanso: You Are Free To Pursue Presidential Ambition In APC

0
Bola Tinubu and Rabiu Kwakwanso

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, says Rabiu Kwakwanso, the party’s presidential candidate is free to pursue his presidential ambition elsewhere. The former Kano state governor, the party said will not be allowed to use its platform to contest the 2027 election because he has since been expelled from the party and no longer its member.

The party’s National Chairman, Agbo Major made the remark in a statement on Saturday, accusing the former Kano state governor of being responsible for the crisis in the party.

Agbo said the party had bid Kwakwanso farewell after he contested the presidency under the party’s platform in 2023.

His remark also comes on the heels of recent suggestions that the former Minister of Defence is headed for the ruling All Progressives Congress,APC, following an agreement with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who many says is planing to dump current vice president Kassim Shetima for Kwankwanso for the next election.

The NNPP Boss said the former presidential candidate has the right to pursue his political aspirations wherever he chooses, noting that Kwakwanso had long been expelled for anti-party activities.

He stressed that the party will deal with the issue of its 2027 presidential candidate when the time is ripe.

Part of that eh said: ‘The NNPP had long expelled Kwankwaso and Galadima and so, they no longer speak for us, nor can they use our platform for any political contest. Our Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiya Movement, led by Kwankwaso ended shortly after the 2023 presidential election. We cannot even allow Kwankwaso for whatever reason to return to the NNPP fold because of the problems and internal wranglings he created for us.

“Kwankwaso led us into unnecessary litigation and even changed our party logo to the Kwankwasiya logo, all in an attempt to hijack the leadership of the party. It was the court’s interventions that led to INEC changing back to our logo that they submitted after a Kangaroo convention in Abuja.

“Certainly, Kwankwaso can never join any political party where he will not have the chance of leadership. Kwankwaso and his group remain expelled, and we will not readmit them because they betrayed our trust massively. He does not have the pedigree to match President Tinubu in any contest and so his ambition is dead on arrival.

“Whoever will emerge as the NNPP 2027 presidential candidate will do so, following due process and constitutionality. We will no longer handover our ticket on a silver platter, and definitely not to someone who betrayed our trust and is no longer on the party.’’

The magazine reported that the ruling APC had, a forthnight ago, forced the party’s National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje  to resign, for allegedly preventing Kwakwanso from defecting to the party.

Ganduje and Kwakwanso, former political allies, and governors of Kano state are sworn political enemies, the bone of contention being  the struggle over will control the soul of the commercial city.

“Let it also be known that the PDP administration, in line with its open-door policy, remains transparent and inclusive. The good people of Osun will continue to be carried along in all political and governance processes.
