Director-General, NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris

The Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr Jide Idris has raised concerns over the increasing number of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) cases across the country, saying its peak season is between November and May.

The latest figures indicate a surge in infections, with 807 suspected cases and 74 deaths reported across 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as of March 26, 2025.

Dr Idris, who disclosed  this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, pointed out that the agency has activated emergency response measures to curb the outbreak, particularly in Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto—the most affected states.

“We are in the peak meningitis season, and the risk of transmission is high due to dry, dusty weather and overcrowding.

“The government is intensifying vaccination efforts, but public awareness and early detection remain crucial in preventing fatalities.”

According to him, in Kebbi State, health authorities have confirmed 248 suspected cases and 26 deaths since late January describing the situation as alarming.

“We are experiencing a sharp increase in cases, and urgent intervention is required to prevent more deaths.

“In Gombe State, 70 suspected cases have been recorded, with 31 confirmed infections and three fatalities. Residents should seek medical attention immediately.

“Meningitis is a deadly but preventable disease. Anyone experiencing high fever, stiff neck, or severe headaches should visit a health facility without delay.”

He stated further that cerebrospinal Meningitis is a life-threatening infection of the brain and spinal cord, caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria.

“It spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact, making overcrowded areas, schools, and IDP camps high-risk zones.

“Common symptoms are severe headache and high fever, neck stiffness, vomiting and confusion, sensitivity to light and seizures (in severe cases).”

He noted that without urgent treatment, meningitis could lead to brain damage, hearing loss, or death within hours.

To curb the outbreak, he said that the agency has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to the hardest-hit states.

“These teams are working with state governments to conduct mass vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas, strengthen case surveillance and laboratory testing, provide free treatment for confirmed cases at government hospitals and launch public awareness drives to educate citizens on prevention.”

He further revealed that vaccination remains the most effective protection against meningitis.

“We urge parents and community leaders to ensure that children and at-risk individuals get vaccinated. The vaccines are available at health centres nationwide.”

He also disclosed that Nigerians can stay safe by getting vaccinated at the nearest health centre, avoiding overcrowded, poorly ventilated places and practising good hygiene—washing hands regularly.

Idris advised citizens to avoid close contact with sick individuals and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

He warned health officials that meningitis cases could continue to rise if preventive measures were not taken seriously.

“Nigerians are urged to report suspected cases immediately. Early detection saves lives. Let’s work together to stop this outbreak before it claims more victims.”,

Idris reassured citizens that vaccines and treatment are available, however, said that swift action from individuals and communities remains critical in stopping the outbreak.

Abia Security Taskforce Vehicle Tumbles

The Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti, on Monday, March 31, 2025, expressed sadness over a fatal accident involving the State’s Special  Security Taskforce, Operation Crush, on Sunday, March, 30, 2025.

The unfortunate road mishap which occurred on Umuahia/Bende road at about 6.30 pm, claimed the life of one of  the taskforce members. Nine  others sustained serious injuries.

A statement from the State Police Command on Sunday, informed that the accident led to the  death of an NSCDC personnel attached to the Taskforce while nine others, including three Police operatives were injured.

According to the Police, the operational vehicle of the taskforce team overturned ,while on their way to their base in Umuahia.

“The injured individuals were promptly taken to the FMC Umuahia where one NSCDC officer was pronounced dead while others are currently receiving medical care”, the police stated.

The Police further noted that  all the firearms belonging to the victims of the accident- both the deceased and injured, are in the custody of the Commander of the Operation Crush.

It stated that efforts were underway to recover the overturned vehicle at the scene of the accident.

In a statement on Monday issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, his Media Aide, Governor Otti, commiserated with the top hierarchy of the Taskforce over the unfortunate incident.

The Abia state Governor also assured that the State Government will ensure that the injured receive adequate medical attention.

He commended the Special Security Taskforce for the laudable job it is doing in securing the State.

The Governor reaffirmed the commitment of his administration towards giving all the necessary support to Security Agencies in the State in the task of adequately protecting lives and properties of the people.

Abia Govt, Host Communities Bicker Over 1025 Hectares Airport Project Land

Abia Airport Project

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

There appears to be no end in sight to the  festering disagreement between the Abia State Government and host communities of the proposed site for the State’s Airport Project.

The Source reports that the Federal Government had made provisions to build an airstrip for the State in the  current fiscal year.

But the State authorities had thought it wise to collaborate with the centre to upscale the project to a full fledged airport.

A well thought out idea it seems. But failure by the authorities to carry along the host communities has continued to ensure  delay in the commencement of the laudable project.

At the centre of the seemingly intractable problem is the small matter of how to adequately compensate the host communities, the actual size of the land to be given, and the return of the portion of land acquired by the previous administration for the same purpose.

From the onset, the host communities had  raised concerns over the Government’s intention to seize from them an estimated 1,025  hectares of land  afresh without discussing how to return an earlier  large portion of their arable farmland acquired for the now botched similar project during the immediate past administration.

The former Peoples Democratic Party  PDP, Government of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu had acquired a large expanse  of land from same coalition of  Nsulu Communities of Isialangwa North council of the State.

However, as the administration was later to explain, the Abia Airport project, was to be jettisoned for a  more necessary endeavour .

Yet, the already acquired large portion  of farmland from the communities were never returned to them.

That remained the case ,when same Abia State  Government came calling for yet, another acquisition last year, a development that expectedly  ignited anger and disenchantment among the host communities.

Severally and collectively the affected host Communities had insisted on the return of the former land acquired before another will be given. A fair and plausible position it appears.

The uncompromising position of the host communities was to force the Government to establish a high powered Committee to engage all stakeholders on the best ways possible to resolve the impasse .

At the head of the Committee ,was and still is ,Governor Alex Otti’s Chief of Staff, a son of the soil  Dr Caleb Ajagba

On Friday March, 28, 2025, the Committee gleefully announced that all grey areas have been amicably resolved between the Abia State Government and the host communities .

Dr Ajagba informed that following the peace pact, work has commenced on the clearing of access road to the airport’s runway.

Ajagba, who  was at the project site  to witness the commencement of work expressed happiness over the final take off of the project.

Speaking with the Media, Dr Ajagba also highlighted the joy and excitement among the host communities, in contrast to the earlier narratives by some people indicating opposition to the project.

“You can see that contrary to the wrong notion being dished out, the Nsulu Community is receptive to this very important project .

“You can see for yourself that the notion of rejection is wrong. It is not correct. Many host communities have received their compensations, and you can see joy with everybody happy” Ajagba stated.

Curiously, barely 48 hours after Government’s announcement of the resolution of the disagreement, the host communities on Sunday, March 30, distanced  themselves from the position of the State authorities.

A statement from the Nsulu landowners accused the State Government of deliberately disobeying a subsisting court order by commencing work on the airport project.

“The Abia State Government has commenced the clearing of the access road leading to the runway of the proposed Abia Airport in Nsulu, despite an order of an Abia state High Court, ordering the State Government to stay further action on the project pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice by Nsulu Landowners.

“Recall that the Alex Otti’s Government was stopped by a State High Court sitting in Okpuala Ngwa which ordered the State Government to stay further action on the project over its plan to seize over 1,025 hectares of land belonging to some Nsulu communities.

” Trial Judge, Justice Enyinnaya Okezie, had on December 20, 2024, made the order, following the suit by representatives of the host communities .

” At the hearing of the suit No.HIN/62/2024, the host communities were represented by their lawyer, while C O  Ogwo ,Acting Director Civil Litigation Department, Abia State Ministry of Justice, appeared for the respondents ( Abia state Government).

“Justice Okezie had ordered inter alia: “It is hereby ordered as follows: That C.O, Ogwo undertakes that action in respect of the subject matter in this suit shall be stayed till the motion on notice is determined”, the Landowners statement reads in part.

The landowners expressed regret that the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Dr Ajagba has moved bulldozers to the airport project site without any regard to the restraining court order.

According to them, it portends danger for the interest of the State, for the Government to be seen as lawless in its actions and operations.

“Such open and brazen disdain and disregard for rule of law ,has the potentials to drive away investors ,who may be tempted to see Abia State as a jungle”, the landowners noted

They, therefore, called on well meaning Abians and Nigerians as a whole to prevail on Governor Otti, and his aides to respect a valid court order.

The landowners insisted that no agreement of any kind has been reached between them and the authorities, contrary to the claims by the Governor’s Chief of Staff.

“Of more concern to the host communities is that an agreement has not been reached with the landowners,on the actual land size they are giving away by way of a Memorandum of Understanding  MoU, the technical details of the impact of the project on the peoples’ health, and survival by way of Environmental Impact Assessment EIA by relevant Health Ministry has not been disclosed, while Government is going around with its handpicked friends it wants to impose on Nsulu landowners as leaders and representatives”, the host communities stated.

Edo Killings: It’s Easy To Arrest Perpetrators, Murders Videoed – Senator Shehu Sani

0

By Adesina Soyooye

A former Senator and Activist, has lamented the consequences of the gruesome Edo killings for Nigerians, countrywide, especially, those who travel by road. He is also worried that all those who took part in the murder of the travelers, have not been arrested, submitting that it shouldn’t be difficult as it was videoed by the perpetrators.

Recall that about 16 Nigerians of Hausa extraction, who left Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and were on their way to Kano, to celebrate Sallah with families and friends, were intercepted at Uromi, Edo State, murdered and their vehicle and bodies set ablaze. Only a few survived the inexplicable incident.

Outrage has since greeted the killing of the innocent Nigerians by a vigilante group which accosted them, and the mob which joined  to kill them in cold blood.

The explanation was that the travelers were carrying dane guns, and so, were mistaken for kidnappers.

Why those who intercepted them did not hand them over to the Police instead of killing them is a question nobody has been able to answer. What is obvious is  that lives no longer have any meaning in the the Country.

A devastated President Bola Tinubu has given security agents a marching order to arrest all those involved. But at the time of filing this report, only about five of them have been arrested.

Reacting to the situation, Shehu Sani wondered why it is taking this long to arrest them. This is more so, according to him, as the evidence is obvious and easily   accessible.

In a post on his X page on Sunday, he wrote:  “Everything was recorded in a video. Arresting the Edo murderers should not be a difficult thing to do for our security agencies. Justice must be done in this case to set an example, avert reoccurence and save other travelers in all parts of the country.”

All hands, however, are on deck to arrest the perpetrators and deescalate the tension.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has  dissolved all illegal vigilante outfits in the State, and sacked the Commander of the State-owned Vigilante Organization, a retired Commissioner of Police.

The Governor of Kano State, Kabir Yusuf, has set up  a Committee to liase with the Edo State Government. The Northern Governors Forum has very strongly condemned the gory incident. And so did the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN.

But an Arewa Group has given an ultimatum for the bodies of the dead to be produced and transported back to their State.

However, factional Emir of Kano, Emir Lamido Sanusi, has called for calm among his subjects and appealed to them not to carry out any retaliatory action.

Yet, tension remains high.

A video of the fight which has now gone viral, shows both fighters exchanging punches before Olanrewaju staggered and fell, hitting his head on the ring floor.

Initially, officials believed it was a routine knockdown and started the count, but they quickly realised it was a medical emergency.

Doctors and medical personnel rushed to his side, but their efforts to save him proved unsuccessful.

According to records from BoxRec, Olanrewaju had a long professional boxing career, featuring in 23 fights. He won 13 of those bouts, with 12 coming via knockout, suffered eight defeats, and recorded two draws.
