Olabode George Warns Rivers Sole Administrator, Ibas

Bode George and Ibas

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

A chieftain of the troubled Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and one time Deputy National Chairman of the Party, Chief Olabode George, on Friday, April 11, cautioned the Rivers State appointed Sole Administrator, Vice Marshall Ibok- Ete Ibas,  to resist  the temptation of getting ” drowned in the murky waters of the State’s politics.

In a statement, George, himself a retired Naval Commodore,  insisted that Ibas must apply the brake in his series of unconstitutional moves, particularly, the dismantling and re-appointment of  legally constituted Governmental structures.

George’s cautionary note is coming on the heels of  Ibas’s appointment of Interim Officials for the 23 Local Councils of the State, as well as the reconstitution of the Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC and other parastatals.

Particularly, the PDP Board of Trustee member took serious exception to the Administrator’s appointment of Interim Council Chairmen in complete disobedience of a subsisting restraining court order.

The Source reports that Ibas  announced the appointment of the Council Chairmen on Wednesday, April 9, amidst a Court order issued on Tuesday April 8, by a Port Harcourt Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Adamu Turaki Muhammad.

In fact, to further undermine the Court order, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, in a circular, stated that the appointment, though made on Wednesday 9 ,was to take effect on Monday April 7.

But reacting to the  development, Chief George warned his professional colleague against getting consumed by an inferno less in intensity than the one he withered in his over three decades of service as a Naval officer.

“I want to  warn Admiral Ibas. If you act against the spirit of the Constitution, you will be held responsible.

“Your appointment is for six months. Even if the President extends it, you will still leave one day because nobody elected you. Your position as Sole Administrator is not legally recognized”, Chief George stated.

He maintained that in the eyes of the law, Siminalayi Fubara  remains the Governor of Rivers State, with the power to undo all the appointments which Ibas is presently making.

According to him, the duties of the   Administrator do  not include making far-reaching political appointments as he is currently doing.

“What happens to those appointments when you leave office on September 18 ? Why are you flouting a valid Court order ? Did you receive approval from the National Assembly to reconstitute the Boards?

“Do you now wield both executive and legislative powers in Rivers State? You have no legal right to appoint anyone.

This is not a military regime.

“The Constitution is still in force .Those using you now will throw you under the bus once you leave office.

“You behaved honourably as a Naval officer. Don’t let unconstitutional actions stain your record. You did not drown in the Navy; don’t let politics drown you legally and politically. Now is the time to apply the brakes”, Chief George noted.

The PDP chieftain’s position also comes the same time the Nigerian Bar Association NBA relocated its 2025 Annual General Conference out of Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, in protest against the imposition of a state of emergency.

In a statement issued late on Thursday evening, April 10, the NBA national leadership noted that holding the all-important Conference in the State, will amount to tacitly endorsing the illegal State of Emergency in place.

The body has chosen Enugu State as an alternative for the Conference.

The Federal Government and World Bank, through the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) initiative, are collaborating with Nasarawa state government to develop infrastructure in public schools.

Nasarawa State Commissioner For Education, Dr John Mamman, announced that under the collaboration, government 0earmarked N12 billion to improve the infrastructure in primary and secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner disclosed this during an interview with journalists in his office on Friday in Lafia, the state capital.

Mamman gave the breakdown of the infrastructural development to include the construction of 30 new classrooms and the renovation of 690 existing primary and secondary schools.

He added that Gov. Abdullahi Sule has approved N150 million, and the state had already paid the money as a counterpart for the first phase of the programme.

“The Governor is willing to pay more this year so that we can improve the standard of infrastructures in our schools.

“We will also construct boreholes, toilets and construct parameter fencing in all the schools to guide against encroachment.”

Mamman further said that the government was working to merge all the Almajiri students from Tsangaya schools with formal education through the bilingual initiative to ensure all children have access to quality education.

The commissioner appreciated the state governor for prioritising the education sector by allocating the highest amount in the state budget since the inception of his administration in 2019.

He further revealed that the state government has already fixed 80 classrooms from the ones affected by windstorms during the last rainy season.

According to him, the ministry was working towards fixing the remaining ones to enable teachers and students to learn in conducive environments.

“We recently distributed instructional materials worth N46 million to public secondary schools and private schools in the state to boost teaching and learning.

“Anyone caught diverting the instructional materials will be severely punished to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Ondo PDP Spokesman Resignation: Caretaker Committee Rejects Decision

Kennedy Peretei

By Ayodele Oni

The Ondo State Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), on Friday paid an unscheduled visit to the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kennedy Peretei, at his Akure residence, rejecting his resignation from the party.

The visit, which was disclosed in a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP in the state, Leye Igbabo was led by the State Caretaker Chairman, Bakkita Bello  who prevailed on Peretei to rescind his decision.

Addressing Peretei during the meeting, Bello said, “Yes, you have the right to feel offended if you need to.

“But you must also understand, as an experienced politician, that a combination of factors are always responsible for any particular action or resolution of a political party.

“You are a true party man and the reason we have come to make you change your mind. You have to rescind your decision to quit the party because we are not accepting your resignation letter.”

Peretei, in his response, told the visiting members that his resignation was borne out of feelings of betrayal and disappointment over the conduct of individuals he had held in high esteem within the party.

Those who accompanied the Chairman on the visit included the State Woman Leader,  Kemi Adesanya; State Youth Leader, Babatunde Daodu; State Financial Secretary, Boluwaji Bamidele; and State Organising Secretary, Engr. Dare Akinwale.

Others were the Ondo Central Senatorial Woman Leader, Mercy Akinlami, and the Directorate Officer, Prince Niyi Akinola.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts by the Caretaker Committee to douse tensions and strengthen party unity ahead of upcoming political engagements in the state.

PDP director of publicity in the state had earlier while responding to the exit of the spokesman stated that the desecration of PDP by Mr Kennedy Peretei, its erstwhile Publicity Secretary smacks of misguidance, malice, mischief, and unfortunately, robs him of the decorum.

“While it is within the right of any person to freely belong to any association of his or her choice or quit any association at any time as he or she pleases, the vulgar description and desecration of PDP by Mr Kennedy Perertei, its erstwhile Publicity Secretary smacks of misguidance, malice, mischief, and unfortunately, robs him of the decorum and decency expected from an individual who has immensely benefited from same organization which he now despises.

“Our Party wonders how an unrealized personal ambition of an individual could have suddenly  driven a whole organization to an intensive care unit from where it is allegedly being taken to the morgue.”

OPINION: Ondo, A State Under Siege

0
Lucky Aiyedatiwa - Deputy Governor of Ondo State

By Oladayo Osho

In recent months, the peace once enjoyed by the people of Ondo has been replaced by terror. Communities are being ransacked. Innocent citizens are abducted, maimed, and killed. Roads have become hunting grounds for bandits. Families are torn apart. Businesses are shutting down. The people cry out, but those in authority remain silent.

Ondo State, our home and pride, is slipping into an abyss of lawlessness, fear, and anarchy. What we are witnessing is not just a breakdown of security but a complete erosion of governance and leadership at the most critical level.

This is not political propaganda. It is the raw truth staring every citizen in the face. Ondo State is bleeding, and the government is watching. Our people are dying, and those entrusted to protect them are nowhere to be found. Fear has replaced faith. Despair has overtaken hope. The people feel abandoned, unprotected, and betrayed.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, your assumption of office brought hope for a fresh start. The people expected swift action and bold leadership. Instead, they have received silence, indifference, and weakness in the face of crisis. Your response to the spiraling insecurity has been passive and woefully inadequate.

You cannot govern a people you are afraid to face. You cannot lead from behind closed doors while blood spills in the streets. You cannot promise protection and deliver nothing but condolences. Your people are in pain, and it is your duty not only to acknowledge that pain but to act decisively to end it.

Governance is not about speeches. It is about service, sacrifice, and courage in the face of chaos. A leader who cannot guarantee the security of his people has failed in the most fundamental aspect of his job. And a leader who does not act while his people suffer is complicit in their suffering.

The people of Ondo did not elect a spectator. They elected a protector—a champion of their welfare and a defender of their lives and dignity. Leadership is not ceremonial or symbolic. It is practical, visible, and most urgent in times like this.

How many more lives must be lost before real action is taken? How many more families must be displaced before the government wakes up? How long will the governor continue to look the other way while communities are overrun by armed criminals? How long will we pretend all is well when everything is clearly falling apart?

The failure of this administration to proactively address the security crisis is not only disappointing but dangerous. It emboldens criminal elements who now roam freely across our state, placing every law-abiding citizen at grave risk.

Let it be clear: this is not an attack on the governor. It is a demand for responsibility, immediate action, and justice. The people have waited long enough. The time for excuses is over. The time for real leadership is now.

I urge the state government to declare a security emergency. Mobilise all available resources. Engage community leaders. Empower local vigilantes with proper training and coordination. Work hand in hand with federal security agencies. Open channels for intelligence gathering. Create rapid response units. Above all, be present and visible in every affected region.

Enough of selective visits and photo opportunities. What the people need is protection, not propaganda. They need a governor who shows up, listens, and acts—not one who issues generic press releases from the comfort of his office while citizens sleep with one eye open.

To the federal government: Ondo State is not a forgotten territory. It is a vital part of this country and deserves the same urgency and attention given to other troubled regions. The killings and kidnappings in Ondo are not isolated incidents. They are symptoms of a larger failure of national security coordination.

I call on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society, and the media to speak out. Silence is no longer an option. We must collectively demand accountability, amplify the cries of the people, and refuse to be intimidated or silenced while our land burns.

To my fellow citizens of Ondo: do not lose hope. You are not alone. Your voices matter. Your lives matter. Continue to speak up, organize, and demand better. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the legacy of those who built this land with sweat and sacrifice.

This is our state. This is our home. We will not watch it fall apart without raising our voices. We will not allow bad governance to steal our peace and future. We will continue to demand leadership that values life, promotes security, and delivers justice.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, the time for rhetoric is over. This is a defining moment. The legacy you will be remembered for is being written now. You can choose to be remembered as the man who stood up and reclaimed Ondo from chaos, or as the man who watched it fall apart.

History will not forget. And the people will not forgive.

NELFUND Threatens Varsities For Failing To Inform Students That Their Fees Have Been Paid

NELFUND

The Managing Director/chief Executive of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, has issued a stern warning to institutions that fail to inform students of loan disbursements made on their behalf, while still demanding payment of institutional fees from the same students.

Recent findings by NELFUND have revealed that some institutions, after receiving student loan disbursements directly into their accounts, have neglected to notify the affected students or reflect the payments in their school fee records, creating unnecessary confusion.

“This act of withholding critical financial information from students is not only unethical but a direct violation of the principles upon which NELFUND was established,” said Mr Sawyerr. “We will not hesitate to take legal action against any institution found engaging in such deceptive practices.”

The MD emphasized that NELFUND’s mission is to expand access to higher education by relieving the financial burden on Nigerian students and their families, in line with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Mr Sawyer further called on all institutions to uphold transparency and work collaboratively with the Fund in ensuring the efficient delivery of this national mandate.

“NELFUND exists to ensure no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to pursue higher education due to lack of funds. We urge institutions to support this noble cause and avoid any actions that could undermine public trust or deny students their rightful support.”

The Fund reassures students and the public of its commitment to accountability, fairness, and the successful implementation of the student loan scheme across the country.
