EFCC Goes After Tompolo For Allegedly Abusing The Naira

EFCC arrest Tompolo

By Akinwale Kasali

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has disclosed plans by the Commission to investigate the founder of Tantita Security Services, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly called Tompolo, for allegedly abusing the Naira at a national occasion.

The agency said that the former Niger Delta militant leader will be prosecuted for engaging in actions that were against the country’s law, saying no one is above the law.

The agency stated this on Monday hours after Tompolo was spotted in a viral video, reportedly during his 54th birthday celebration in April, dancing as a man sprayed ₦1,000 notes before him.

Tompolo’s action in the video that had gone viral prompted calls from Nigerians that the EFCC must investigate the matter to serve as a deterrent to other wealthy citizens still engaging in the act that has been outlawed in the country.

Following the call- out, the anti-graft agency said the Niger Delta chieftain will have questions to answer over the viral video.

According to the agency: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”

Before him, the agency had dragged a few Nigerians before the court for abusing the Naira during ceremonies held across the country.

“Fubara Can’t Just Discard People’s Mandate”, Says HURIWA

Siminalayi Fubara
Governor Siminalayi Fubara

By Ayodele Oni

“Fubara’s nonchalant attitude gives room for concern and is disappointing”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has reminded suspended Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara that the mandate he is holding belongs to the people.

Reacting  to the recent remarks by Governor Fubara, suggesting his lack of interest in returning to office,  the association warned that such developments—regardless of the governor’s personal disposition—should not be normalized in a constitutional democracy.

In a statement issued, on Monday in Abuja, and signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator, HURIWA stressed that Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on the rule of law, the supremacy of the constitution, and the sanctity of electoral mandates.

The Association expressed deep concern that Governor Fubara’s nonchalance, reflected in his public remarks at the service of songs held for the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, could be misinterpreted as acceptance of an illegality and further embolden anti-democratic forces.

At the Port Harcourt event on Sunday, Fubara was quoted as saying, “Can’t you see how better I look? Do you think I am interested in it? Do you even know if I want to go back there? My spirit had already left that place long ago.”

HURIWA said while the comments may reflect his personal frustrations, they do not erase the fact that a sitting President has no constitutional powers to suspend a duly elected governor and impose a sole administrator over a federating unit.

“We are not responding to the person of Governor Fubara, but to the dangerous implications of what has happened in Rivers State.

“The President of Nigeria, as powerful as his office may be, has no constitutional right to suspend a governor or appoint a military administrator over any state. What has taken place in Rivers State is a coup against the Nigerian Constitution.”

Nowhere in the Constitution, HURIWA said, is a President empowered to arbitrarily suspend a state governor or hand over governance to an unelected appointee.

“Again, the Association emphasized that Section 11(4) of the Constitution only allows the National Assembly to intervene in the affairs of a state in a time of breakdown of law and order—but even that does not empower the President to suspend governors or impose unelected administrators.

“The section provides that the National Assembly may make laws for peace and order, not remove or suspend a governor from office.

“It is a mockery of our constitutional democracy for the federal government to take over a state without a formal declaration of a state of emergency by the National Assembly as required under Section 305.

“Even if there is a state of emergency, the law does not give the President the powers to impose a sole administrator. The office of the governor is a constitutional creation—not a presidential appointee.

“Even if Governor Fubara says he is tired or uninterested, it is not his mandate to discard. That mandate belongs to the people of Rivers State who elected him.

“No governor can be suspended by executive fiat. What we are witnessing is an unconstitutional power grab that must be resisted by all democratic forces.”

Wike Confirms Fubara Visited Him With Two APC Governors For Peace

Nyesom Wike and Simi Fubara

As part of the ongoing peace initiatives to end the political crisis in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, recently visited him with two All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors to seek peace.

Wike’s confirmation came on Monday while speaking to journalists.

The revelation came on the heels of Fubara’s declaration that he was not desperate to return to office, nearly two months after President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state.

Fubara spoke on Sunday during a service of songs held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital, in honour of the late Edwin Clark, elder statesman and the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

“Have you asked yourself, do you think I’m interested in going back there? I want to ask you—don’t you see how much better I’m doing?” Fubara asked the audience at the service of songs.

Fubara dissociated himself from the protests for his return and described them as personal views not aligned with his approach. He said such comments were unlikely to support peace in the State.

The Governor also expressed concerns that actions taken by some of his backers had, in fact, worsened the crisis.

He asked the audience to focus their reflections on Clark’s life and legacy, rather than turning the event into a political protest.

However, Wike revealed that “Fubara came to me with two Governors and one elder statesman. Just that they are both APC Governors. He said he wants peace.”

The meeting reportedly took place at Wike’s residence.

According to reports, Fubara was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and a former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba.

Sources said Fubara “walked straight into Wike’s living room because that’s a familiar terrain” and appealed to the Minister to end the political tension between them.

Akpabio: Everyone Talks About Peter Obi, While Obi Only Talks About Nigeria’s Condition —  Dr Sam Amadi

0
Sam Amadi and Godswill Akpabio

In a pointed commentary shared on his official X account, Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, decried what he termed the growing pattern of unwarranted attacks on Peter Obi by senior government officials. According to Amadi, it has become a troubling trend for members of the current administration to frequently target Obi, despite his consistent focus on Nigeria’s dire socio-economic realities rather than on personalities.

He cited recent criticisms from the Presidency, the Governor of Lagos State, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio as examples of this misplaced focus. Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, had recently remarked that the “labour of our heroes past has gone in vain”—a sobering reflection on the country’s current state of affairs. This observation was met with sharp rebuke from Senator Akpabio, who accused Obi of being disrespectful and of dishonouring the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

Before this, the Governor of Lagos State had also lashed out at Obi, reacting to comments he made during a recent foreign engagement, where he critiqued the country’s economic trajectory. The Presidency, too, had earlier dismissed Obi’s ideas and proposals on governance and economic reform.

Amadi, however, offered a counter-narrative. He argued that while the political elite expend significant energy attacking Obi, the man himself remains resolutely focused on Nigeria’s structural challenges and the urgent need for reform. “If elections were a purely rational exercise,” Amadi noted, “Peter Obi is so far the only candidate who ought to be elected.”

He lamented what he called the disproportionate attention paid to Obi by high-ranking government figures, asserting that Obi has steered clear of personal attacks and has instead consistently advanced a vision for national renewal rooted in prudence, accountability, and economic revitalisation.

Amadi’s intervention has sparked wide engagement online, with many Nigerians echoing his sentiments and urging government officials to redirect their attention to the pressing issues confronting the country, rather than vilifying opposition voices. His remarks underscore a growing perception that constructive critique and nation-centred discourse are increasingly being met with defensiveness, rather than dialogue.

Soludo’s Misleading Claim: Setting the Record Straight

0
Val Obienyem abd Charles Soludo

By Val Obienyem

Yesterday, Governor Charles Soludo once again revealed his persistent fixation on Mr Peter Obi, seizing the occasion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Anambra State as a platform to continue his hatred. Cloaked in subtlety but unmistakable in intent, his remarks amounted to veiled and unwarranted attacks against Obi – an unfortunate misuse of a presidential visit for personal vendetta.

During the visit, Governor Soludo claimed in his speech that the last visit by a sitting President to the state was merely to commission a brewery. This assertion is both misleading and historically inaccurate.

Contrary to Governor Soludo’s claim, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan paid five visits to Anambra State during his tenure – each marked by impactful public and private sector engagements that significantly advanced the state’s socio-economic development.

On October 15, 2010, President Jonathan paid his first official working visit to Anambra. During the visit, he commissioned several key projects, including the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing plant in Nnewi; the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, built from the ground by Mr Obi; the Kenneth Dike Central Library; the twin-building State Secretariat (the first in the state’s history); and the Emergency Management Complex. He also launched the Parenteral Drug Factory of Juhel Pharmaceuticals and commissioned a number of state roads, including the dualised Zik’s Avenue, Odor Bridge, the eight-lane Head Bridge–Upper Iweka Road, among others.

Chief Innocent Chukwuma, the CEO of Innoson, has said countless times that if not for Mr Peter Obi, his company would not have survived. It is among the top ten employers of labour in Anambra State and in tax payment.

On August 30, 2012, President Jonathan returned to Anambra to inaugurate Orient Petroleum’s oil drilling facilities in Aguleri-Otu—made possible by massive state investment under Mr Peter Obi.  It was in that visit that Anambra was pronounced the 10th Oil producing state in Nigeria. He also inaugurated the Onitsha River Port Complex and commissioned various private-sector-led investments inspired by Mr Obi’s administration. Over 15 roads within the Onitsha Harbour Industrial Estate were completed and commissioned during the visit. Key facilities commissioned  within the estate included Orange Drugs Company, Krisoral Company, and Brollo Steel Company, among others.

He also facilitated the establishment of International Breweries (Intafact), which today stands as the foremost employer of labour in Anambra State and its highest taxpayer. Near the end of Mr Peter Obi’s administration, the company sought to expand operations, having already secured land along the banks of the Omambala River. Regrettably, due to the current administration’s perceived indifference to investment-driven initiatives, that expansion was redirected to Shagamu — a decision for which the Ogun State Governor remains openly grateful. Notably, three of the brewery’s largest distributors hail from Anambra, each providing employment to over 100 workers, further underscoring the state’s latent economic potential. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Enugu, the people continue to celebrate the establishment of the brewery at Ama, yet curiously, some choose to deride Anambra’s own achievements. In contrast, South Africa, with over 200 breweries, has turned its beverage industry into a powerful economic engine, exporting various brands across the continent — including to Nigeria, which hosts barely 20 breweries.

His third and fourth visits were to sympathise with victims of the devastating floods in Anambra and to attend the funeral of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, respectively. Both visits were facilitated by the then Gov. Obi.

His fifth and final visit occurred on 10 March 2014, when he officially flagged off the construction of the ₦117 billion Second Niger Bridge – an infrastructural milestone long yearned for by the people of the South-East. This historic event, which took place just days before Mr Peter Obi completed his tenure, was more than ceremonial. President Goodluck Jonathan, in his address, acknowledged Mr Obi’s persistence and instrumental role in ensuring the project moved from promise to execution. He stated that he felt a moral obligation to personally inaugurate the bridge in honour of Obi’s tireless advocacy. Notably, it was at Mr Obi’s insistence that the contract was re-awarded to Julius Berger, a globally reputable construction firm, to guarantee structural integrity and timely delivery.

Throughout all these presidential visits, not once did Mr Peter Obi use the platform to denigrate his predecessors. He approached each occasion not as an opportunity for self-aggrandisement, but as a moment to elevate Anambra State—celebrated as the ‘Light of the Nation’—to unify its diverse people and attract meaningful investment. For him, governance was a call to service, not a stage for settling personal scores. This is the true spirit of a state visit: dignified, visionary, and people-focused. It should never be reduced to a theatre of the absurd, where individuals entrusted with leadership exhibit nothing but poor upbringing and petty spite under the spotlight of national attention.

It is important to underscore that Mr Peter Obi deliberately encouraged the commissioning of private investments during presidential visits. His rationale was clear: while public infrastructure is expected from government, real economic growth requires private sector participation, which in turn benefits from federal attention and encouragement. This strategy attracted some of the most consequential investments in Anambra’s history—many of which remain top employers and major taxpayers today.

It should also be noted that the amusement park commissioned during President Tinubu’s visit was, until Mr Obi’s intervention, a flooded wasteland. It was Obi who reopened the closed water channel, constructed a massive culvert, and made the area accessible for future development.

Regarding Soludo’s reference to the South-East’s endorsement of President Jonathan in 2011, it is worth pointing out that this was a collective decision by the South East’s leadership. They chose not to field a candidate for the presidency or vice presidency, opting instead to support Jonathan with the hope of reciprocal support in the future. It is therefore curious that Soludo failed to mention the  type of adoption he meant which actually was the adoption of President Mohammad Buhari in 2015 and 2019.

Regrettably, Governor Soludo’s recent remarks continue a pattern of publicly undermining Mr Peter Obi—a trend that has persisted since the 2023 presidential campaign. Even more perplexing is that, rather than using President Tinubu’s visit to market Anambra and attract investment, Soludo chose to peddle a distorted version of history that downplays the state’s developmental strides.

It is essential that public officials speak truthfully, especially in the presence of national figures. Rewriting history for political gain not only disrespects past administrations but also insults the intelligence of Ndi Anambra.

Facts remain sacred. No amount of distortion can erase the visible legacy of impactful governance delivered during the Jonathan–Obi era.

Gen Olanrewaju To LASIEC: Stop Elections Into ‘Illegal’ 37 LCDAs

0
Babajide Sanwo-Olu

A former Minister of Communications,  Maj. General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (rtd.) has condemned the decision of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC to conduct council elections in the 20 LGAs and LCDAs in the state.

The election, according to LASIEC has been slated for July 12, and in preparation the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, held its ward congresses across the state on Sunday.

The congresses, according to checks by the magazine was marred by irregularities and protest, following allegations of imposition by the leadership of the party.

As in the past, political pundits said the ruling APC is likely to sweep the elections in all the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDA’s, which have remained a contentious issues, since they were created by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu while he was governor of the state.

The LCDAs have yet to be listed among the 774 LGAs recognised in the Nigerian Constitution.

According to Olanrewaju, any election conducted into the LCDAs is likely to be nullified if challenged in the court by any willing party.

The former  Minister urged the LASIEC to be guided by this, saying the legitimacy of the councils has remained a matter of contention for years.

Olanrewaju: “It is unconstitutional to conduct elections in 20 constitutionally recognised LGAs and unconstitutionally recognised 37 LCDAs in Lagos State. This election will be a nullity if any of the participating parties should challenge the conduct of the election in the court. The only recognized 20 Local Governments in Lagos State are listed in the Amended 1999 Constitution.

“If elections were to be conducted in 20 constitutionally recognised LGAs, indigenes would form 90 percentage of the contestants. With an additional 37 LCDAs, the indigenes have been schemed out of contest.

“It is obvious now that the state indigenes have lost their patrimony. I think one of the participating parties can go to court and challenge the status quo. Can’t this course of action be taken?”

PDP Reconciliation: Difficult Task For Saraki

Bukola Saraki
Dr Bukola Saraki

A former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has been picked by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to head a Reconciliation Committee to bring all the warring parties in the party together.

Saraki, a former governor of Kwara state was, on Sunday, chosen by the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, PDP-GF to head the committee made up of some current and past  governors of the party, at a meeting held yesterday in the Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The former governor got the position amidst the internal crisis that have rocked the party for months. A slew of defections in the party has made some political pundits to predict an imminent implosion in the PDP.

Looking at the huge impact the crisis has had on the party, close watchers insist that Saraki, with his experience faces an arduous task, even though others said he has enough experience to perform having been part of the party for many years.

Apart from the former Senate President,  other members of the committee are governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Caleb Muftwang of Plateau, and Peter Mba of Enugu State.

Also,  Senators Seriake Dickson, Ibrahim Dankwambo, and former governor of Abia State, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu are members of the committee.

The meeting that held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge was called by the PDP-GF Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, the magazine was told.

Those that attended the meeting include the governors of  Enugu, Zamfara, Plateau,Oyo,  Taraba, Adamawa, and Osun states.

The Minister of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike,  who has been fingered by  not a few, of being among those causing the crisis in the party also attended the meeting.

The Bauchi governor said the meeting was necessary in other for all the leaders of the party to “close ranks”  ahead of the May 27 National Executive Council, NEC meeting.

In spite of the obvious rancour in the party , Mohammed assured the party’s supporters that “PDP is united”, pointing out that the meeting was attended by key leaders of the party.

Mohammed: “We are here with all the governors elected under the party, that are still in the party, and a substantial number of former PDP governors, with our leaders, the chairman of the party, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

“We discussed some of the issues relating to our party, some existential issues, of cours,e that have been circulating in the media and among us, so that we will be able to navigate smoothly for the NEC scheduled to take place on May 27 and by August, we will have an early convention.

“So many issues and reports have been made, and it is an opportunity to close ranks, and to make sure that at least there are no ill feelings, there are no qualms, there are no misgivings between the leaders of the party.

“Governors of the party have reached out to our colleagues who have been there before, who have more experience.

”Whatever suggestions or opinions they may have will go a long way in giving an added impetus to the actualisation of our NEC, and our convention scheduled to take place on specific days.

“We want to reassure our teaming supporters that the PDP is working, the PDP is united,” Mohammed said.

Meanwhile, close watchers of the party insist that Saraki has a difficult task ahead of him considering the deep-rooted crisis that the party has been embroiled in for months, particularly after its loss of the Presidency to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Troops of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army have arrested no fewer than 36 suspected oil thieves following coordinated clearance operations in the Niger Delta Region.

The operations, said to have been carried out in conjunction with operatives from other security agencies, also led to the dismantling  of over 21 illegal refining facilities across the states of the Region.

A statement issued on Sunday, May 11, 2025, by the Spokesperson for the Division, Lt Col.Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, informed that over 591,000 litres of stolen petroleum products were recovered during the operations.

He noted that during the operations which were part of the renewed crack down on the activities of oil thieves and pipeline vandals, troops discovered massive illegal refining activities around Orashi Game Reserve ,as well as Okolomade area of Abua/Odua local council of Rivers State.

According to him, troops were able to trace a hose as long as more than 15 kilometers which was connected to an illegal loading bay used for the purpose of siphoning crude oil from pipelines.

“In a followup operations, five illegal refining sites with a large metal tank loaded with over 350,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gasoline Oil AGO were intercepted.

One Teacher Killed, Several Abducted, As Bandits Invade Zamfara College

0
Gunmen - Kidnappers

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

After a lull, banditry elements have once again beamed their operational searchlight on schools. A teacher was, reportedly, killed, while several others, mostly students, were kidnapped  in Zamfara state  on Saturday night May, 10, 2025.

In a statement on Sunday May 11, 2025, the  Amnesty International Nigeria said that some heavily armed gunmen stormed Government Secondary school Tsafe, in the dead hours of Saturday  and kidnapped unspecified number of people, killing one in the process.

The body noted that the incident which occurred from Saturday night to the early hours of Sunday underscores the failure of the Nigerian authorities to adequately protect lives and properties of the people.

The Source reports that the incident has, once more, brought to the fore past attacks and abductions targeted at schools in Zamfara and other security challenged states in the North.

Mass kidnap of school children had somewhat characterized part of the activities of insurgents especially in Borno,Kaduna and Zamfara states. Hundreds of school children has been abducted on several occasions.

But the trend subsided between late 2024 and early this year and normalcy creeped gradually into the education system in the affected areas.

This attack has, however, re-echoed sad memories and palpable apprehension of past activities of terrorist elements in the North West and North East regions of the country.

While confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command informed that efforts are underway to track down the hoodlums and rescue the abducted victims.

The State Police Command spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar who gave the name of the dead teacher as Mallam Kabiru, noted that his wife and two other female residents of the College’s staff quarters were taken away by the attackers.

According to Abubakar, the attackers targeted the staff quarters of the secondary school and noted that Kabiru was shot following his attempt to resist the bandits.

“They (bandits) invaded the staff quarters of the Government Secondary School on Saturday night.

“They wanted t him (the deceased) but he resisted them .That was when he was shot .His wife and two others were later taken away”, the Police Spokesman stated.

He, however, assured that Operatives of the Police Tactical Squad and other security agencies in the state have been mobilized to go after the attackers.

Instructively, Saturday’s attack and kidnaps came on the heels of an emergency parley of Northern Governors Forum in Kaduna to brainstorm on the recent resurgence of terrorist activities in the region.

At their meeting held in Kaduna on Saturday, the Northern Governors among other things expressed concern over the recent resurgence of terrorist activities in the region.

They, therefore, called for an accelerated action towards the legalization of State Police as a veritable panacea to the region’s seemingly intractable security challenges .

Incessant attacks on schools and other educational facilities by hoodlums have tended to worsen the issue of out-of-school children in the Northern part of Nigeria.

Lamido: APC Will Soon ‘Explode’, PDP Will ‘Wrest Power’ In 2027

0
Alhaji Sule Lamido

Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa state has appealed to members of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, not to be disillusioned  amidst the problems facing the party. He said the party will bounce back and win the Presidency in 2027.

Recently, the PDP has been embattled as a result of the apparent divisions  within its ranks. The PDP has also been facing the challenges of keeping many of its members, as key leaders in the party have been defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

As a result, some political pundits have predicted that the main opposition party in the country is dead, and does not have a chance of returning back to the power anytime soon.

Recall that the biggest defection hit the party recently after the governor of Delta state, Sheriff Obovrewori, his deputy, and all the 23 members of the state House of Assembly defected to the ruling APC.

The party was still nursing the wounds of the defection it suffered in the Oil rich state, when , during the week, three Senators, one of them a former governor of Kebbi state, Adadmu Aliero dumped the party for the ruling party.

Not a few political pundits insist that the party has received so much hit, and has been weakened ahead the 2027 presidential election when it’s supposed to face the ruling party.

But speaking while delivering a keynote address at the PDP congress held at Aminu Kano Triangle in Jigawa, the former governor and PDP chieftain said the party’s fortune will return, saying many of those who left the party will soon return.

He boasted that some members of the APC, including its National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje will also join the PDP soon, ahead the 2027 election, saying “the PDP will rise with full force to wrest power in 2027,” adding that many of those who joined the APC are not of like minds, and will soon push the party to ‘explode’.

Lamido:  “I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions, having accommodated people with different mindsets.

“I said it, and I repeat: within six months, all those who defected to the APC will come back, and the PDP will rise with full force to wrest power in 2027.”
