AYDM Urges President Tinubu, Ribadu To Intervene In Looming Crisis In Niger Delta

AYDM

By Akinwale Kasali

Pan Yoruba Group, Alliance For Yoruba Democratic Movement, AYDM, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to, as a matter of urgency, take steps to prevent the looming crisis in the Niger Delta.

The Group, at a Press Conference held in Maryland, Lagos, told

Journalists on Tuesday, that the present repression of Itsekiri people has the potential of leading to fresh outbreak of hostilities that may affect oil production and flare armed conflict in the region.

AYDM, a coalition of 130 Pan Yoruba groups, at the briefing addressed by its General Secretary, Popoola Ajayi, flanked by leader of Yoruba Assembly and Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Hon Wale Osun, President General of Agbekoya, Chief Kunle Oshodi, and an official of Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Oluwole Thompson, said it was in the interest of the Niger Delta Region for the President and NSA to wade into the issue.

Others at the conference were leaders of Itsekiri Community in Lagos and  those from Warri Federal Constituency 1, Comrade Monoyo Edon, Hon. Kingsley Tenumah and Oritsetimeyin Osariemen

The AYDM said the primary causes of the crisis are INEC’s proposed Ward Delineation Exercise in Warri Federal Constituency and a string of political and economic exclusion imposed on Itsekiri people, the award of oil pipeline protection of oil facilities in Itsekiriland to sworn enemies of Itsekiri and the proliferation of small arms suspected being acquired to settle scores with Itsekiri people.

The group warned that if the Presidency fails to intervene and ensure Justice, Nigeria may witness a return to the 1990s when Delta State was a theatre of war between Itsekiri and other ethnic groups in the oil producing area.

“We are compelled to call this conference due to the emerging crisis in the Niger Delta and the far reaching implication for democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. We recall that for about 6 years, the Niger Delta was thrown into armed ethnic conflict which threatened the stability of Nigeria. We do not want to see this happen again. That conflict brought tears and blood in the Niger Delta,” the AYDM said.

The group said the crisis could be avoided if the Presidency and the security institutions  respond to  the current early signal warnings.

It said, “It’s never too late to prevent a major crisis in the Niger Delta that may  drag the entire Yoruba Nation into the crisis. We believe this can be avoided  and should be avoided by all means, hence our decision to speak out.”

The Group said, unfortunately, if the historic injustice is not addressed, history of violence may repeat itself.

It said it hoped this will not happen given the various forms of crisis Nigeria is facing at the moment.

The AYDM said the time to act is now.

It recalled that the Yorubas, Igbo, Hausa, Tiv like every other ethnic nationality in Nigeria have their traditional homeland with their various administrative structure with which they entered into the marriage of the 1914 amalgamation.

“How would any of these ethnic groups feel if Wards are being created in their ancestral land in the name of people who came to settle on their land?

“How responsible would it be to have Oyo Ward in Sokoto or Ibadan Ward in Enugu or Zamfara ward in Enugu just because there are a few indigenes of Zamfara in Enugu city?

The group said for administrative convenience, the various Yoruba sub groups such as the Itsekiri, Ilaje, Ikale, Owu, Egba, Ijumu, Ondo, Oworro, Ibilo, Igbomina Okun, Ijebu, Ekiti etc though scattered in different part of Nigeria, they still maintain their historical, linguistic, cultural affinity and solidarity.

The AYDM said there is no gainsaying the fact that the Warri homeland is entire Itsekiri’s.

“Prior to the 1914 amalgamation, the Itsekiri people of Warri kingdom like their Yoruba brothers already have a well established administrative structure, headed by the Olu of Warri with which they conveniently conduct their judicial, legislative and executive functions. The defunct Warri Local Government, nay Itsekiri homeland was what gave birth to the three Warris of today, viz; Warri South, Warri North and Warri South-West. Another way of saying this is that in the evolutionary account of time, what was not there in the Warri kingdom (Itsekiri homeland) before and post the 1914 amalgamation cannot now be reckoned with.”

The AYDM said INEC, before this grand conspiracy to alienate, nay completely obliterate the Itsekiri from their homeland  are aware of the electoral facts in their archive that of the 13 wards in the defunct Warri LGA/Itsekiri homeland, Itsekiri were having 10 wards, Ijaws two wards and the Urhobos one ward.

It noted that INEC through a grand conspiracy was able to successfully isolate the Itsekiri homeland of the Warri Federal Constituency without tempering or replicating same conspiracy in the other 359 federal constituencies of the federal republic of Nigeria to merge previously existing larger wards and polling units of the 10 Itsekiri wards in the defunct Warri Local Government and increase the one of Urhobo and two of Ijaws’ through various failed litigation attempts and abuse of relevant administrative power. ”

The AYDM said what INEC has successfully shown to the whole world is  their conspiracy theory  that while the polling units, voting strength and population in the other 359 federal constituencies of Nigeria continue to grow, the one Urhobo ward and the two Ijaw ward in the defunct Warri Local Government continue to grow, the 10 Itsekiri wards of the same defunct Warri Local Government continue to diminish.

The group said INEC justified the fear that when Delta state was to be created, the Itsekiri vehemently opposed the idea of forcing them into Delta State

“Then it was said that once the Itsekiri homeland is taken or carved out of the proposed Delta State, the economic viability needed for the sustainability of the new Delta state would have been defeated. Hence Delta State cannot be created.”

The AYDM said the Yoruba and Itsekiri are blood bound and would jointly resist the current injustice being inflicted in Itsekiri people.

It also noted that prior to the advent of democracy in 1999 when the Ijaws mobilized massively to destroy lives, properties and social amenities in most of Itsekiri communities to enable them gain undue political advantage over the Itsekiris homeland, little did they know then that they were working in connivance with INEC as reflected in the current delineation  of wards being orchestrated by INEC.

The AYDM said the arbitrary creation of 12 illegal wards in Warri South where INEC collapsed the 9 wards to become 6 and multiply the Urhobo one ward in Warri South Local Government Area to become six is another sour taste in the grand  conspiracy.

“Although Itsekiri protested against the arbitrary creation of these illegal wards in Warri South and went to court from where justice was served and judgement delivered directing INEC to return to the original 10 wards structure for 23 years, INEC in flagrant disobedience to this court judgement has been conducting elections with the illegal 12 wards.

The AYDM said it was not surprised that the same INEC and the Ijaws colluded again to present a final report (which they have now reduced to a mere proposal) of delineation of wards in Warri federal constituency, all in the guise of taking over Itsekiri homeland and hand them over to hostile neighbours who came from their own homeland of Patani, Bomadi and Burutu  and the Urhobos in Delta Central Senatorial District.

The AYDM said in the first schedule of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the headquarters of the Warri South-West Local Government is Ogidigben, an Itsekiri community but has been arbitrarily relocated to Ogbe-Ijoh, an Ijaw community.

The group said to the amazement of everybody, the National Assembly which deposed to an affidavit in a Federal High Court in Abuja that they were not going to disobey the Supreme Court judgement on the naming of the Maritime University as Okerenghigho as advised by the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami passed the bill into law using the illegal name, Okerenkoko.

AYDM said NEC recently murdered sleep in Delta state when it disregarded all the records in their archive and pronouncements from competent courts of jurisdiction in Nigeria by going ahead to make public a proposal for new delineation of wards in Warri Federal constituency even against pending court cases and procedures where they completely sold out the Itsekiri homeland to the ijaws.

The AYDM said another agency of government, the Nigerian National Petreoleum Corporation, (NNPC) has also not helped matters when it  awarded the surveillance and security contract of protection of oil pipelines in Itsekiriland, against the spirit and letters of the Petroleum Industrial Act to Tantita Security Services Ltd -a company owned by a sworn enemies of the Itsekiri, thereby confirming our fears that neighbors want to completely exterminate Itsekiri from their homeland and share all the resources amongst themselves. The company has used this cover to unleash mayhem on Itskiriand entering sacred spiritual groves, sacred temples, arresting and detaining Itsekiri people at gun point.

The AYDM called on  President Bola Ahmd Tinubu and the National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to immediately intervene to ensure Justice and fairplay for Itsekiri people.

“This is as simple as obeying all the Supreme Court decisions for the past 50 years won by Itsekiri. We call on the DSS, NSA, EFCC, ICPC to be alive to their responsibilities to probe Prof. Rhoda Gumus and all the INEC officials associated with this monumental electoral fraud.”

The AYDM called on Present Tinubu to invite Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu the INEC chairman who may not be aware of the fraud against the Itsekiri people.

“Let him explain to Nigerians why the Itsekiri areas have been shrinking while the Ijaw and Urhobo areas are increasing astronomically.”

The coalition called for the setting up of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate INEC’s delineation activities in Warri Federal Constituency to ascertain why INEC merged several wards in Itsekiri Area to become one while multiplying areas with low registration in the Urhobo and Ijaws enclave, Whether INEC has the constitutional powers to create new communities or super impose illegal names on existing Itsekiri communities, Whether INEC has the discretion to obey one court judgement while disobeying another.

“We are calling on Mr. President to direct INEC to return to the Original 13 ward defunct Warri Local Government Area and use the same as the basis upon which delineation can be carried out in Warri Federal Constituency.”

The AYDM called on the Legal Aid Council to investigate the Head of the Legal Department and all the staff of INEC involved in this charade.

“We also call on President Bola Tinubu to withdraw all pipeline security and surveillance contracts in Itsekiri land awarded to Tantita Security Services Ltd, a company owned by our sworn enemy Mr. Government Ekpemupolo  and award same to competent Itsekiris.

The movement called on the Nigerian Police to investigate the Surv. Adamu Abaji, DG of the National Boundary Commission and Kingsley Otuaro, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Delta state over the falsified adjustment of gazetted boundaries and the renaming of our communities in our homeland. This should lead to their arrest and prosecution.

The AYDM has directed the 37-member committee set up from all Yoruba speaking block in Nigeria to immediately reach out to all critical stakeholders groups, opinion  and political leaders to see how all of these can be actualized.

The AYDM is the mass-based Pan Yoruba organisation that provides consistent and well-articulated support for peace and conflict prevention in the South West including Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta States. AYDM networks with similar groups in the Middle-Belt, the South East, South-South and the North.

The Group is known as the largest coalition of Pan Yoruba groups made up of 130 coalition members drawn from community based, artisan and professional groups. The South South Zonal Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the appointment of Caretaker Committees to oversee the affairs of Party in Bayelsa and Edo States.

The mandate of the caretaker committees is for a period of three months.

A statement on Prince Etim Isong, Zonal Publicity Secretary of PDP, stated that the decision followed the dissolution of the executives in the two states following allegation of gross misconduct.

“The South South Zonal Working Committee, at its regular meeting held today  22nd April 2025 at the Zonal Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State approved the appointment of Caretaker Committees to oversee the affairs of Party in Bayelsa and Edo States respectively for a period of three (3) months effective from today.

The Zonal committee accused the caretaker committee in Edo state of poor handling of internal crisis and poor outing during the last governorship election in the state.

“The decision to set up Caretaker Committees for both States follows the dissolution of the State Working Committee of Bayelsa State and the Caretaker Committee in Edo State on account of various acts of gross misconduct by the dissolved Executives which are in clear breach of the Party’s Constitution, the poor performance and woeful outing by the Party in Edo State at the last Governorship elections, and the poor handling of internal crisis rocking the Party in both States.

“The Zonal Working Committee took these decisions in the best interest of the Party after a careful review of the activities of the Party in both States in line with the Constitution of the Party as amended in 2017, particularly Articles 10(1),(f),(g),(k), and (4) as well as Articles 26(2),(a), 27(2)(a&b), 58(1),(a),(c),(i),(j), and 59(1)(f)

“The Zonal Working Committee hopes that this bold move will strengthen the Party’s foundation and ensure effective leadership in both Bayelsa and Edo States, respectively.

The newly appointed Bayelsa state committee is headed by South South Zonal secretary, George Turnah while that of Edo is Nosa Ogieva.

Gov Muftwang Emphasises “Collective Efforts Will End Incessant Killings In Plateau”

0
Governor Caleb Mutfwang

By Ayodele Oni

Plateau State, Governor Caleb  Mutfwang has called on people of the State to rise above political, ethnic, and religious divides to end the gruesome killings of innocent citizens once and for all.

Still in search of lasting solutions to the persistent attacks on rural communities in the state, the governor had convened an enlarged emergency stakeholders’ meeting to address the worsening security situation in the state.

Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, in a statement explained that the meeting, held in Jos, brought together an array of distinguished Plateau citizens, including former Governors, serving and former Senators.

Others were current and former Members of the House of Representatives, former Ministers, traditional rulers, religious leaders from Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and other key stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering at the Banquet Hall, New Government House Jos, Governor Mutfwang decried the pattern of violent attacks which, according to him, have persisted for over two decades with the same sinister objective: the annihilation of defenseless communities.

He pointed out that the orchestrated violence in Plateau State predates his administration and those of his predecessors, Sen. Joshua Chibi Dariye, Sen. Jonah David Jang, and Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong.

The Governor dismissed the long-standing narrative that the attacks were mere herder-farmer clashes, describing them instead as acts of genocide with clear land-grabbing motives.

He lamented that several local government areas, including Wase, Kanam, Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, Riyom, Bassa, and parts of Jos South, have suffered repeated and brutal assaults over the years, leading to several loss of lives and property.

Governor Mutfwang reiterated that peace and security remain the cardinal focus of his administration affirming his commitment to unlocking the full potential of Plateau State and breaking the cycle of poverty that has hindered development and devalued the lives of its people.

“Let me especially thank members of the National Assembly for honoring this invitation. Your presence today shows that you are true sons and daughters of Plateau.

“This gathering has become a necessity. At the last count, we have lost countless lives. This crisis has deeply disturbed me and it has also disturbed Mr. President, who personally reached out to me for a briefing. Since then, we’ve been working round the clock.”

Throwing more light on the security breakdown across the state, the Governor noted that no senatorial district has been spared, from kidnappings in Shendam and Kanke to terror cells operating in Kanam and Wase.

He warned that criminals have taken advantage of a weakened state capacity and growing communal disunity.

“How can bandits occupy the Wase grazing reserve and someone still calls that a clash? When gunmen attack defenseless communities on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, what kind of clash is that?”

The Governor urged Plateau’s diverse ethnic and religious communities to unite in confronting the crisis and cautioned against politicizing the bloodshed or adopting an every-man-for-himself attitude.

“When this crisis began, it was viewed as a Tarok problem. Then it was seen as a Berom issue. Today, no one is spared—but we are still behaving like it’s not our collective concern. Let us preserve this land so that future generations can inherit a Plateau we can all be proud of.

“I didn’t come into office just to govern. I came to break the cycle of poverty and elevate our people into prosperity. But we can’t achieve that if we don’t confront and tame the elephant in the room.”

Mutfwang reaffirmed his commitment to working with all Plateau citizens, irrespective of political affiliation, to forge a united, sustainable path toward peace and development.

“I have no other vested interest than to ensure that not an inch of this land that God gave our forefathers is lost. Let us reclaim it, preserve it, and nurture it for generations to come. I stand before you today not as a master, but as a servant to push your collective agenda: the agenda of Plateau.”

Burning Of Ilesa High Court Complex

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA), has condemned the burning of the Osun High Court complex in Ilesa on Monday.

Report revealed that yet to be identified arsonists set the complex Ablaze overnight, destroying valuable case files and documents.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered investigation into the matter with a view to bring culprits to book.

The NBA’s Osun State Chairman, Yemi Abiola on Tuesday, expressed serious concerns, stating that the attack poses a significant threat to the justice system and the rule of law in the region.

Abiona questioned the intentions behind the arson, noting that this is the second of  such incident at the court, with a similar attack happening  few years ago, when the chambers of a judge in Court 3 were destroyed by fire.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Abiona rejected the idea that it could have been a natural incident, suggesting instead that the perpetrators deliberately targeted important court documents.

He praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for swiftly ordering an investigation and increasing security around the court premises.

Abiona also called on the police to thoroughly investigate the crime and bring those responsible to justice, emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of the legal system.

I Don’t Want To Be Pope, Says Top Candidate, Cardinal Anders Arborelius

0
Cardinal Anders Arborelius

A Swedish cardinal considered to be among the potential favourites to succeed Pope Francis said Tuesday that he did not expect to be elected at the coming conclave.

“It would be fun to have a Swedish pope but I think it’s pretty unlikely. Highly unlikely,” Anders Arborelius, 75, told Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

Arborelius, the first Swedish Catholic bishop since the Protestant Reformation more than 500 years ago, was appointed as the Scandinavian country’s first cardinal in 2017.

He converted to Catholicism at the age of 20 in the overwhelmingly Protestant country but also home to one of the world’s most secularised societies.

Arborelius confirmed he would take part in the conclave to elect the next pope but told SVT that he had asked Francis to release him from his duties as cardinal, because he wants to return to live in his monastery in southern Sweden.

He said the pope had approved his request but no date had been set for the end of his tenure.

“So now I’m left hanging a little,” he said.

A former Carmelite monk, Arborelius is known as a staunch defender of Church doctrine, notably opposed to allowing women to be deacons or blessing same-sex couples.

Like Francis, Arborelius advocates welcoming migrants to Europe, including Christians, Catholics and potential converts.

Police Make U-turn On Obi’s ‘Poster Boy’ Insist On His Arraignment In Court

0
Boy Who Stood In Front Of Obi's Car

Jimoh Moshood, the Lagos State Police Commissioner has disclosed that Quadri Alabi, the boy who became famous after standing in front of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s convoy has not been totally left of the hook.

The state police boss made the remark on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television programme Morning Brief, few days after a magistrate court released Alabi, based on the advise of the state’s Department of Public Prosecution, DPP.

Recall that Alabi was released recently following the unrelenting efforts of some human rights lawyers led by Inibehe Effiong, after spending months in prison, for alleged armed robbery, the case drew serious public outrage as not a few condemned the manner the boy, considered to still be a teenager was so treated.

But speaking today, Moshood said the boy’s age remains controversial as investigation is still ongoing to ascertain his real age with the purpose of arraigning him in court.

Recall that Obi had recently promised to send the boy back to school in line with his ambition to become a better person.

Going  by what Moshood said his Alabi’s dream of getting formal education may be shattered, according to well meaning Nigerians who are monitoring the issue.

Moshood said the police in not aware of the DPP’s Advice that discharged or acquitted the boy, saying he will soon be dragged to court where he’s expected to take his ‘plea’ before a judge.

Moshood Jimoh - CP Lagos State

“Police action terminates when a matter is taken to court. The lawyer yesterday mentioned the DPP. For us, we have not seen the DPP advice,” Moshood said.

“We don’t know whether he was directed to be granted bail, whether he was acquitted, or whether he was discharged. We’re going to verify all those things equally to know what is in the DPP advice today.”

He said the court will determine Alabi’s fate.

Moshood: “The trial has not been opened into the matter. The remand process was what we went to the court for, and the court saw reason with us, from the statement of the boy that he’s 18 years old, and he was remanded in a custodial facility, and the matter was supposed to come up for trial.

“So, whatever may have transpired there, the court in its wisdom will invite us or not invite us. It is when we find those out that we will know whether we’re joined in the matter or not.

“ When the arraignment in court starts, the suspect will be brought to court and he’s going to take his plea. So, that has not happened; we will study the DPP advice to know where we’ll proceed.”

While promising to pay for Quardri’s education, Obi had called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible for his illegal incarceration were brought to book.

Obi: “Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school and complete his education and I will make sure he gets it.

“His determination is not just inspiring, it is a call to action, and I am committed to ensuring that he gets the education he desires and deserves.

“In addition, we must not stop at his release. Those responsible for this illegal incarceration must be held accountable. As we strive to build a Nigeria where fairness and integrity prevail, we cannot afford to allow such acts of criminality to go unpunished.

“I once again thank the Lawyers and everyone who stood and remained unrelenting for Justice.

“Together, we will build a Nigeria where education, freedom, rule of law, equity, and justice, care, and protection of the less privileged in our midst will stand as the foundation of our democracy.”
